welcome to "today" on this sunday morning. i'm lester holt. >> and i'm jenna wolfe. i'm used to the beautiful weather on the weekend. >> the warm early spring and no winter and now snow up in new england. it is about to get cold and wet, at least in the east coast. people have been hit with nasty storms overnight. thundeand lightning. >> some areas, like you mentioned, seeing some heavy snow and damaging winds. janice huff will be her in a moment. we will talk about john edwards who will get his day in court tomorrow. he is accused of using campaign money to hide his affair. we will preview the trial. and take a look at this. two massive explosions rock

"ghost" was a popular movie in 1990. the patrick swayze and demi moore showed that pottery could be sexy. tomorrow, "ghost:the musical" opens on broadway. >> we felt like doing that, but it would be awkward. we start with the big east coast storm. janice. >> we are seeing a break across the northeast from the thunderstorms last night. that was the first wave. here comes the second wave moving up the eastern seaboard. you are seeing a bit of rain across the carolinas overnight and severe weather in florida. south florida, there were tornado watching out this morning.

those watches have now expired. as the rain moves up the coast, a low will develop to bring more moisture. we are talking anywhere from 1 to 5 inches of rain in areas, including new york city, that are under a moderate-to-severe drought situation from the lack of rain and snowfall from the winter. check out snowfall amounts. it will be cold enough from buffalo and pittsburgh and maybe 1 foot or more in spots. we have seen an early spring in areas. the leaves are on the trees. there could be excessive power outages because of branches and leaves and trees coming down from the heavy, wet snow. similar to the october storm we saw in the northeast that brought so many power outages as well. big storm coming our way. gener back to you. >> thanks, we will have the forecast in a moment.

here is lester. this morning, searches in and around tucson, arizona are search for a 6-year-old girl. we have mara with more. >> reporter: they are trying to determine if they wandered off or was kidnapped. the little girl's family has been deaf as sedated. >> translator: it is something i can't believe. i can't believe it. i wish it was a dream. >> reporter: 6-year-old isabella disappeared from her house on friday. her family saw her in bed at 8:00, but by the next morning, she was gone. family members joined 100 officers, including fbi and u.s. marshals. talking to neighbors and searching for cars looking for

any sign of the first grader. police are working every possible angle in this case. >> we are treating it as if it could potentially be as bad an as a child abduction. >> reporter: she lives with both her parents and two brothers, but police are checking into any possible custody issues as well as the possibility that the little girl wandered off. an amber alert has not been issu issued for isabelle. she is 6 years old. she has brown hair and hazel eyes. she is 4'tall and weighs 44 pounds. >> she is a great and loving girl. she stays away from people. we are all really surprised and shocked that this could happen to our family. >> reporter: police teams are using police dogs and a helicopter to find this girl.

>> all right. mara, thanks. here is jenna. now to the latest on the sex scandal as it widens. nbc's white house correspondent kristen welker has the story. >> reporter: good morning to you, jenna. officials with the secret service are continuing with the investigation this weekend. this as the number of agents under scrutiny has increased. a week after one of the biggest scandals to hit the secret service in decades. six are in the process of being separated from the agency. including david cheney and greg stokes. recommended for removal. the secret service said it cleared one employee of serious misconduct, but he still faces administrative action. another agent is under the microscope. five on administrative leave.

11 military personnel are implicated. chuck grassley spoke out lashing out at the secret service. >> i said if the heads don't roll, the culture of the federal agency won't change. >> reporter: in a letter to the director, grassley asked if investigato investigators obtained records on the hotel staff. a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation said there is nothing to indicate that white house staff was involved at this point. senior administration officials talked about the letter calling it pure politics. the house addressed the issue. >> i have no reason to believe that this did not involve

anything but the agents and the military personnel. >> reporter: nbc news as learned that investigators confirm the identities of the women in question with the help of surveillance camera video taken from the hotel in cartegena. >> thank you, kristen. we have david gregory with us. could this extend beyond those who are directly involved? >> i think there is a desire to keep this moving and try to get to the bottom of it and get everybody involved. to be dealt within some fashion. that's where a lot of the congressional inquiry is going here. there are still questions about director sullivan if he can survive this. the president has expressed anger about it and confidence in the secret service. one of the issues that i talked to people in the government this week is that there are not a lot of remecommenmedremedies.

the military has opportunities to use because of the legal means that they have to bring charges although prostitution is legal in colombia. >> the white house is concerned this may be politsized. an attempt to make a link. is this something the white house should worry about? >> the question is the government. whether this or the gsa scandal and spending money on big parties in vegas. it is the thing people get outraged about because they suspect the government runs amock. beyond that, thii think it is t question of who runs the government and the president has to be accountable at some level. >> let's turn to the presidential election now. obviously a romney and obama

match up. do those numbers reflect the romney who is now being slowly embraced by his party? >> he has to catch up. there are outside groups that will spend a lot of money on romney's behalf, in effect, by going after president obama. romney will have to ramp up his fund raising. he has to focus his message because of the primary fight. >> what about a santorum endorsement? a lot of people are wait for that. is there a deal he is waiting for? >> i think rick santorum wants to extract a certain price with his profile and the issues he cares about. there is no love lost with the candidates. rick santorum recognizes he has a moment here. he talked about the issues on

good morning to you. rob said we were going for a roller coaster ride. i guess this is the part where we plummet, though. very nice scenery. we're here with rob mayeda. you said we would do this. >> especially on the coast. some cooling out there, but look at san jose. 63 this morning, still kind of mild inland. some of our higher elevatation valleys, we'll see some cooling there, but probably a lot of cooling into the north bay and some of the costally areas. not much of a strong sea breeze. we're expecting it to wrap up the day. that spin to the clouds offshore, that could give us some interesting weather,

especially the middle part of the week. hour by hour, the clouds will break up action and then fill in once again as we go into the evening with some areas of mist and drizzle starting to show up around the coast an the peninsula. temperatures around the bay area today, mostly 60s on the coast. for the day, 70s for most places, upper 60s closer to san francisco. it's places like livermore that will still get into the mid 80s, but the temperatures continue to drop. speaking the drops, raindrops coming back especially on thursday. thank you very much, rob. new this morning, a shooting in san francisco has left one person fighting for his life. it hat near galvez avenue and third street. police say the man suffered critical injuries in the shooting. no other injuries are reported. police are searching for the person who opened fire. dozens of boats sailed onto

the bay for a memorial flotilla. they gathered in memory of five sailors now presumed dead after an accident during a yacht race april 14th. the san francisco yacht club of belvedere organized that memorial service. many lowered flowers and wreathing into the harbor before return to their -- one body was recovered, but four crew members are still missing. the counterculture festival known as burning man is dealing with another setback -- probation. the land of bureau management put it on probation, because last year it exceeded the crowd cap. they sold a limited number of tickets this year, which caused other problems as well. it's the first time the burning man event has been on probation since moving from san francisco to the black rock area.

edwards with receiving almost $1 million in illegal campaign contributions, money used to hide his mistress, rielle hunter, from the press while he was tect his wife, elizabeth, from the humiliation of his affair. law school professor katherine dunham says there has never been a case like this. >> this particular section of the federal election law and the definition of what a contribution is has never been challenged in this way.

>> reporter: there's no question, john edwards has credibility issues. he lied about his affair. to counter that, the defense will attack the truthfulness of the government's star witness. former aide andrew young admits he has lied, falsely claiming paternity of the child edwards had with hunter. while young is expected to testify edwards directed the money, edwards says in a court document that young actuall >> pocketed a lot of the money. young was not available for comment. >> i think the central thing in the case is one admitted liar against another admitted liar. >> reporter: the question, is which person will the jury believe. and now here's lester. >> parents have spent time talking about their teens about drinking and driving, but when was last time you talked to your kids about drugs and driving.

here is natalie morales with more. >> reporter: more teens admitted they have driven while high on pot than drunk. more than 30% of teens in the study did not think pot impaired their driving ability. we wanted to see if teens would get in a car with a driver who said he was high. the parents secretly watched to see what they would do. >> are you legit? >> reporter: sarah and sydney would get in a car with a driver who is high on pot. the girls don't know he is just acting. their moms were watching on monitors predicted they will not get in the car. they hold their breath, waiting to see. are they right? >> you will drive. >> hunter has the keys. he has been instructed to do the driving. how are you feeling about this, lisa? >> uncomfortable. >> reporter: the group gets up
