50s. heading to the mid 70s today. san francisco looking at a high of 64. overall a nice and comfortable day. this weather continues into tomorrow before we get changes this weekend. i'll talk about that coming up. now mike has the update on a crash in dublin. >> fastrack lanes are visibly moving. zooming in over toward the tri-valley. a popular spot, dublin interchange we saw. 580 jammed up where you're starting to tap the brakes. a crash, two vehicles, two rigs there stuck together after a crash. they are on the shoulder, but a spectacle so folks are slowing down to see what that is. 580 another crash around north livermore. not a problem for speeds there.

happening today, doctors can now help people suffering from terminal illnesses end their own lives here in california. it is a controversial law which officially goes into effect today. >> this law was passed following a widely publicized case of britney mainer. >> good morning. you might expect there are a lot of people who disagree with this new law. it is a new law and it does take effect today. a lot ofç people are expected subscribe to the new program here in the state of california. it is expected to triple the number of termly ill patients nationwide who can get a lethal dose from their doctor if the pain they are suffering becomes too much. there are rules in place. the law affects patients with six months to live from a terminal illness. those patients have to be diagnosed by two different doctors to be eligible for the medications that will end their lives. those patients, doctors or

pharmacists can opt out at any time. one of those doctors participating in the program is in berkeley. he is ready to help end the suffering of many patients. >> one of which might be physician aid in dying where they use the medication to die. most of all, how do we make you have a good death? >> as you mentioned, there is strong religious opposition to the new law. the new law requires termly ill patients to submit three requests for life-ending drugs. two must be verbal and they must be 15 days apart. that new law in california takes effect today. >> damian, thank you very much. new smoking rules in california take effect today. that includes raising the minimum smoking age from 18 to 21 across the state of

california. starting to smoke is illegal for anyone under 21 to buy tobacco products. the new legislation also regulates e-cigarettes and restricts tobacco use in other ways. california becomes the second state after hawaii to raise the legal age to 21. it might spur a movement across the country. he takes very little responsibility. >> he is now the focus of international outrage. for the first time we are hearing what brock turner wrote to the judge about the sexual assault at stanford. in a letter to the court, the former stanford swimmer appears to blame the party culture on campus for his crime. "the swim team set no limits on partying and drinking and i saw guys take full advantage of these circumstances while i was shown to do the same." >> there are plenty of people on campus who drink who don't rape

other students. >> a jury found turner guilty of three counts of felony sexual assault. the judge aaron persky sentenced turner to six months in jail though he could have sentenced him to ten years in prison. hundreds of thousands of people have signed petition demanding that that judge be removed from the bench. a congresswoman jackie spear plans to honor the sexual assault victim in congress next week and use her words to bring light to sexual assault on campuses. members of congress men and women will take turns reading parts of that victim's letter to brock turner. the special reading will happen on the house floor next week. total anarchy is how some describe a san francisco police commission meeting last night. they were supposed to be discussing use of force by officers. >> they want your two minutes to keep going. >> i don't know how you sleep. you all have blood on your

hands. >> that meeting was eventually called off entirely. several people voiced their disappointment including the city's new acting police chief. >> people are upset they never got a chance to communicate what their issues were. they want to talk about things that were important to them. >> there are some people in this room who are not here for reasonable discussion. they just want to take over. >> there are two more public meetings planned to discuss the new use of force poll system the next one is june 15th. searching for more suspects, you are looking at a picture of a man wanted by san jose police in connection with a violent donald trump rally last week. he is now one of several suspects linked to the's tacks on trump's supporters. trump is long gone from san jose. this case is far from over. san jose police make three more arrests because of that protest. that brings the total to seven arrests since that rally last

thursday. the mayor publically denounced the violence and denied accusations he ordered officers to stand down at the height of the attack. many arrested are minors. >> to the sports arena we go. this sums up a disappointing night for the warriors. final score 120-90, cavaliers. game four set for tomorrow night. >> they looked like a team that was desperate. we didn't play desperate. we a looked relaxed and comfortable. >> don't get outplayed. we've got to be better than that friday. we got bullied. >> the game was in cleveland, there was plenty of action in oakland as a near sellout crowd

a man who saw our report called police. the next day he said he unwittingly said he bought that stolen cannon. police are looking for a second suspect. fbi needs your help to track down the dreaded bandit. he's not feared. he had dreads. agents say the suspect disguises himself with a long wig and fake period and dark make-up. experts believe he is white or hispanic and say he has been known to flash a gun. he rob twos banks last month. investigators say there may be others as well. there is now a $5,000 reward for information leading to the dreaded panned why it's arrest. 6:14. people dreading having their twitter accounts hacked. as many as 32 million accounts have been hacked and leaked.

they were told about that breach from an alleged hacker. many appear to be from russia. it's likely year information was collected by malware affecting browsers such as chrome and fire fox. how much time do you spend binge watching your favorite shows? netflix did a study to find out. it takes viewers about a week to finish the first season of a tv show. that means they are watching netflix about two hours a day. the report also found that genres make a difference. people watched thriller and sci-fi shows fastest. how could you look away? political dramas and comedies are watched at a slower pace. >> one week for one season is pretty quick. >> i think it's two days in our house. >> to most, san francisco is the focal point of the bay area. is where the center of the city with so many important landmarks? today in the bay got to the

peninsula. san francisco 58. north bay. all our weather underground sites showing temperatures from 52 to 58 in san rafael. 59 in vallejo. breaking it down for san francisco, we will continue to see the clouds throughout at least lunch time. by early afternoon once again, 1:00 we start to see the sun peeking out. for the south bay, up to 81 in gilroy. 68 in san mateo. 62 in the presidio. napa 77. 68 in oakland. mid 70s for the tri-valley. we are in for changes. this area of low pressure giving us a nice onshore flow. ocean breeze keeping our temperatures in check. we'll be under the influence of high pressure. that will give us more of a northerly wind and our temperatures will start to heat up as we go into sunday as well

as monday. looking at the temperature trend for the next five days, pleasanton will be below average today and tomorrow. average temperature 79. warms up on saturday. beach weather on sunday. on monday, still pretty warm as we head back to work. will be 85. looking ahead to the weekend, it may be as hot as the upper 80s. even a few spots hitting low 90s. tri-valley 88. in the peninsula we'll see a high of 80 sunday. not a bad way to start out the weekend. make some plans to try to stay cool. let's head over to mike. >> we'll look at our fremont camera. nice smooth drive past the truck scales. we are looking at san jose where ]uu(áq lookn

and other sugary drinks in san francisco - was supposed to a new law requiring health warning labels for ads on sodas and shugy drinks in san francisco was supposed to go in effect next month. this week a judge blocked that law while an appeal by the beverage industry moves forward.

the industry says the law violates their free speech rights by making them put something on their label they don't believe is true. the group lost the case last month which is why they are appealing. the ninth circuit court is expected to rule on that appeal. are sidewalk repair as cash cow for san jose? >> what did you find, chris? >> thousands of letters that tell residents you must fix your sidewalk plus pay $100 for an inspection. san jose issued more than 14,000 of those letters over the past 2 1/2 years. look at the clutter created when we mapped them all out. the dots are everywhere. this plot does not expose overzealous inspectors hungry to pad the city books. 75% of sidewalk cases arise from neighbors turning in their

bernie sanders asked for this meeting. >> right. this is not like he gets hauled into the white house and the president says we need you to drop out. this is not quite how this is going. sanders wanted to sit with the president because clearly he and his millions of supporters want to have some say and input and leverage when it comes to what democrats are going to be focusing on. that begins today. we heard from president obama when he pretaped an interview for the tonight show last night. >> my hope is over the next couple of weeks we are able to pull things together. >> president obama will appear on the "tonight" show tonight hours after his conversation with bernie sanders at the white house today. >> i thought bernie sanders brought enormous energy and new ideas. he pushed the party and challenged them. i thought it made hillary a better candidate. >> now that hillary clinton secured enough delegates to win the democratic nomination, will sanders concede and urge

of the week. enjoy today. we start out with morning clouds, becoming sunny and a pleasant day. lunchtime temperatures will be nice. take the lunch outside. it will be in the 60s and low 70s. heading up to 77 in the tri-valley and south bay. the peninsula up to 74. heading into the weekend, yes it gets hot. we'll talk about that. mike has better news for the tri-valley commuters. >> tracking the volume of traffic around the bay. here is the san mateo bridge. around the same latitude moving over to the right we'll show you westbound 580. look at the big improvements over just ten minutes. west 580 does back up on the approach where all the red is. things are getting easier toward the dublin interchange. the crash cleared from the shoulder so distraction is no longer a distraction. south bay we see the rest of the bay moves well. 101 slow for san jose.

traffic very easy both directions northbound is the one coming toward us. thank you. a former stanford swimmer sexually assaulted an unconscious woman on campus. we know what brock turner says is to blame. he says the party culture at the university fueled the attack. >> bob redell joining us live from stanford this morning. this is a case that continues to spark backlash across the country. now it's reaching the halls of congress. good morning. >> good morning to you there in that letter to the court, brock turner, the former swim star here at stanford does appear to blame his criminal behavior on what he calls the so-called party culture on campus. in that letter he goes on to write to the judge, "the swim team set no limits on partying or drinking. i saw the guy take full advantage for these circumstances while what is shown to do the same. i witnessed countless times the

guys go to party and meet girls and take the girl they just met go back with them. turner was convicted and sentenced to six months in jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman by a dumpster on campus early last year after a late-night fraternity party. >> there are plenty of people who drink and don't rape other students. >> he takes very little responsibility. this is a "i'm sorry you're hurt "letter. >> he wrote he was from a small town in ohio with little party experience. that's misleading. investigators say they found text messages that indicate turner drank, smoked marijuana and dropped acid in ohio and during his time here in stanford. bob redell, today in the bay. >> new details on a story we first broke monday morning. stanford police released the sketch of a man they say broke into two homes and accosted two women as they slept.

one woman screamed, scared the man away. in the second incident the woman chased him out of her home. a teenage girl is safe but her family says she was kidnapped in a possible case of sex trafficking. >> we're sad, you foe what i mean? >> police swarmed the area near 65th and alcatraz where they say a man took the 14-year-old girl hostage. they were able to rescue that girl and arrest the man. the family tells nbc bay area the girl told them other victims were inside that home. >> there are ties to any human trafficking that we take these incidents, any violent crimes seriously. >> i am happy she got away. i hope there were no other children that they can't find. i hope they got everybody they needed to get. >> police say the investigation is not over.

>> investigators are looking at surveillance camera video this morning after a bullet hole was found at san jose city hall. employees arrived to work yesterday and found the hole at the base of a window. no one was hurt. police believe the shooting happened around 2:00 in the morning yesterday. >> bull shot in city hall is something we all should be concerned about. we are not making the assumptions about what caused it or what relation it has with other news. >> the city is not aware any of threats that could be linked to the shooting. police are reviewing surveillance footage above that window which was struck. >> warning for drivers who use highway 4 in pittsburgh. there is b.a.r.t. construction that could sound like gun fire. police do not want drivers to be alarmed, especially following the spate of shootings on the freeway in the area. construction will take place on highway 4 and railroad avenue between 6:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. >> oil refineries are trying to overturn a series of air pollution rules adopted

following the chevron oil refinery fire back in 2012. according to the east bay times, five refineries have sued to block rules aimed at reducing emissions by 20%. those refineries suing are chevron, shell, valero, tesoro and phillips 66. they argue the new rules are unfair and possibly unjustified. the rules were created after the fire at the chevron refineries four years ago which sent thousands of people to hospitals with eye and throat irritation. firefighters quickly extinguished a fire that came dangerously close to homes in san jose. it happened 8:20 last night near cathedral park. firefighters faced challenges because of the steep terrain. they put the fire out and said they were lucky the fire broke out at night when the winds were low.

no structures were damaged. >> people traveling to lake tahoe during their vacation time. a health alert you might want to know about. a flea tested positive for the plague. this was taken off a chipmunk last month. health inspectors are not aware of if i humans affected at this point. this is a bacterial disease. doctors say it is often spread by çfleas on wild rodents. warning signs are posted in tahoe camp grounds. >> kids are out of school. one san francisco supervisor is teaming up with the coast guard to warn everybody about the dangers along the coast line. he believes that not enough is being done to warn people with the dangers of ocean beach and rip currents there. >> a lot of the issues are people think this is a swimming beach and it's not. somebody wades out in their

ankles, there is a danger of rip currents. >> they joined coast guard members for investigations at the beach. there are warning signs of rip currents around the beach. he hopes to make some changes in the coming months. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall to see if it is beach weather. >> it will definitely be beach weather. today it will be nice and cool and comfortable. people spending time outside and taking in the sunshine. we are not seeing that now. we will see sun later on today. temperatures starting out in the 50s heading into the mid to upper 70s. san francisco will top out at 54 with a mix of sun and clouds. that keeps us cool for today and tomorrow. it starts to heat up this weekend. like is looking at south bay slowing. >> here is the live shot 101

caesar goodson is one of six police officers charged in gray's death, but the only one facing a murder charge. goodson was the driver of the transport van where gray suffered his spinal injuries last april. a judge will rule on that case, not a jury. it's a bench trial. that is what goodson requested. another officer was acquitted by the same judge last month. family and friends came together to remember a northern california teenager who was killed in a crash involving a california highway patrol officer that. officer was allegedly driving distracted in his squad car. the crash happened tuesday along i-5 near the town of orlon. the sergeant says the officer was looking down at his computer and didn't see traffic slowing in front of him. the officer rear ended a car with three teenagers inside. 15-year-old was sitting in the back seat and killed on impact. today the first of two

public funeral services for the great muhammed ali is set to begin in a couple of hours. he died friday at the age of 74. >> louisville, kentucky, with preparations under way. >> it is. muhammed ali lived his life in the spotlight. his final good-bye will be no different. both his funeral and muslim funeral prayer service will be open to the public. >> inside or outside the ring, muhammed ali captured the attention of millions around the globe. fans and admirers stood in long lines to get tickets to his memorial service. >> i think it's a real testament to the power of mohammed muhammed ali and his message. >> tomorrow a slow procession will drive through neighborhoods

here are the top stories on nbc y welcome back. before you head out the door, here are some of the top stories on nbc bay area. the controversial right to die law goes into effect in california. damian joins us live from san jose with the full story. >> a local doctor says he will participate in this new program, the controversial program, a program that takes effect today. a lot of people are expected to participate around the state. it is expected to triple the number of terminally ill patients who can get a lethal dose from their doctor if the pain they are suffering becomes too much. it affects patients with six months to live from terminal illness. they have to be diagnosed by two different doctors to be eligible for the medication that ends their lives. patients, doctors and pharmacists can opt out at any time. there is strong religious

opposition to the new law. they must submit three requests for life-ending drugs. two must be verbal and they must be 15 days apart. california becomes the fifth state in the nation to enact this new law. he takes very little responsibility. this is sort of "i'm sorry that you're hurt" letter. >> he being brock turner who is now the focus of international outrage. we were for the first time are hearing what he wrote to the judge about that sexual assault at stanford. in a letter to the court, the swimmer appears to blame the party culture on the stanford campus for his time. writing the swim team set no limits on partying and drinking. we shared that letter with students on campus. >> there are plenty of people on campus who drink who don't rape other students. >> a jury found turner guilty of

three felonies, sexual assault charges. judge aaron persky sentenced duraner to six months from jail. he could have sentenced up to ten years in prison. hundreds of thousands of people have signed petition demanding that judge being removed from the bench. the discussion was like total anarchy. they were supposed to talk about use of force by officers but protesters took over. >> the want your two minutes to keep going with what they wanted in the first place. >> i don't know how you sleep. you all have blood on your hands. >> things only got testier from there. the meeting was eventually called off entirely. two more meetings are planned for later. the next one is on june 15th. >> i'm wearing short sleeves but you probably want to shed a sweater if you're wearing one.
