weather. >> we have clear skies in the south bay. some fog along the coastline. we are expecting to see some clearing quickly this morning, but in san francisco, from is an brun know, y san bruno, it is all fogged this. 60s for the entire coastline. and then we'll have some 70s for the inner bay and a few 80s today for inland valleys. if you're heading to the beach this weekend, heads up, there is a strong risk for rip currents. we'll talk about that risk and get you to the fourth of july all-important holiday weekend forecast and the next seven days. let's bring you to a developing story, at least 20 people have been killed during an attack in bangladesh. one was a 19-year-old student at uc berkeley. six gunmen stormed a popular restaurant yesterday in the capital city of dhaka. the standoff ended with troops

rescuing 13 loss ahostages and g attackers. isis is the reportedly claiming responsibility. tragedy in the south bay is prompting awareness and action. this comes after a driver hit and killed a 6-year-old boy in a parking lot. the estimate happened just after 9:30 thursday night at the oak ridge mall in san jose. police say the boy was holding his mother's hand when it happened. in the wake of his death, many people say they're keeping a close eye on their kids. they're also pledging to be more alert and go at a slower pace hoping to prevent something like this from happening again. >> these cars when trying to cross, and some people, they just don't want to stop. they want to keep going and mad dash. >> usually i'm very careful. i hold my daughter's hand. but i don't want this to happen in the parking lot the anymore. >> police say the driver is cooperating and has not been charged. drugs and alcohol were not a

factor. investigators are reviewing cameras and asking witnesses for more information. two families are looking for answers as the man accused in a bizarre movie theater stabbing in santa rosa appeared in court. he's facing charges in the stabbing of a man monday night at the roxie theater. he's also suspected of stabbing a homeless man to death that same night. investigators are still trying to go determine if the two crimes are connected. family members in the courtroom yesterday shared their opinion. >> randomness just makes me feel more confident that there is a connection because like i said, like who would want to kill him. >> that was a cousin of the homeless man killed. the other victim was stabbed four times. he is however expected to make a full recovery. new gun control laws in kalt cal are bringing joy to many local gun shop owners. that's because business is booming. gun shop owners say tightening

the rules has more people coming in looking to make purchases before those rules take effect. the new laws include a pan on magazines that hold more than ten bullets, background checks to buy ammunition and gun loan restrictions to name a few. some folks say this move is understandable, but will not prevent gun violence. >> i definitely did buy a lot more than i should have. if it does help people sleep at night, you know, what fine. >> governor brown signed six bills yesterday to tighten gun control rules. they will go into effect in january. taking a stand against a new california vaccine law, demonstrators gathered on the golden gate bridge last night to protest the new law that requires schoolchildren to get all their vaccines before returning to classes. the law which took effect yesterday has been a contentious issue for many parents. >> if you look at the number of vaccines that the kids get from birth, it's about 72 total

explanation. >> reporter: the kitty cat whale watcher is heading out on another tour. >> we've had a tremendous amount of humpbacks come to our coast. and the accessibility of the humpbacks have been the easiest that i've ever had. >> reporter: may turned into a great month to see them and even thousand people are grabbing binoculars. >> they're coming up to the tail. >> reporter: mary jane is with the national marine sanctuary. >> there seem to be a lot of small schooling fish, primarily anchovies in the area near shore. so right off san francisco in pacifica, that seems to be a hot spot for the humpbacks. and they are opportunists. >> reporter: she said they also feed on krill and right now food is abundant.

>> it's perfect conditions for ocean productivity. >> reporter: other type typs of whales are being spotted, too. but whales also lead to worries. >> for the last two months, they have been going this to the golden gate and coming at least as far as alcatraz and it's a cause for concern because we don't want any of the whales to end up in the sacramento river. >> reporter: they warn people to say a safe distance temperature f . for watchers, it's quite a hoe. and from whales to sharks. think of it as a gopro or a fitbit for a great white shark. researchers devised an orange and yellow wearable camera fastened around the shark's door

sole fin. great whites make an annual migration to a north part of the pacific ocean which the experts call the white shark cafe. once there, the sharks make repeated and dramatic deep water dives. experts hope the video will explain why they dive. that should be fascinacinatinfa. all notithough i prefer the sha be away from shore. >> perfect. but not for us. >> obviously whale and shark story with all the warm water, it has brought a lot of activity. >> and we're headed the opposite direction now. we did el nino and that is coming to a close and now the cool water starting to affect the coastline. and that is why water temperatures are cool and air temperatures even at the coastline will stay cool. here is a shot from san jose. you can see ken is bringing us

the movie shot. san jose with blue skies and no fog this morning. and where we do have the fog, coastline and inner bay. here is san francisco, you can see from san bruno and there is the city down below. the fog moving with the naked eye this morning. and it will eventually break up as we move toward the morning hours. but again in san jose, inland valleys looking at clear sunshine this morning. it's nice and comfortable as well. 61 in concord, 59 in livermore, 52 gilroy, 52 in san jose. it will stay cool at the coastline today, we're talking 60s for san francisco. half man moon bay. the fog will stay in place, so not expecting overly sunny day. but inner bay, we will see some sunshine. 70s expected for the inner bay and inland valleys today will still manage a few low to mid 80s. but again, temperatures coming down from where they have been over the past couple of days. tomorrow they go right back up

about so that if you're headed to the beach, you heard us talking about the whales and sharks, if you will actually get in the water, there is a strong risk for rip currents this weekend. the way you can tell rip currents are there, you see the large break. once the break happens, wait for the next wave to develop. if you don't see the big tall breakers, that is how you know that there is a rip current in the water. whenever you get stuck in a rip current, you want to swim parallel to the coastline. so again, keep an eye to the wave this is weekend. let's talk about the surface map. we have strong storms rolling through las vegas and phoenix this morning. for us here at home, we have the marine layer stacked at 2,000 feet. so eventually tomorrow i think it will stay in place for the coastline. same deal for monday. and you may even get some thunderstorms here across yosemite over towards reno and las vegas. and i think tomorrow we'll clear out. really for the rest of the weekend after we get towards this afternoon, we're just talking sunshine for most of the bay, most of the state. and even for most of the west. but we are still going to deal

with that fog at the coastline each and every day all the way true hop. so here is your holiday weekend forecast for the south bay. mid-80s all the way through monday, temps a little warmer for monday as well. you'll notice a couple degrees. peninsula in the hid 70s, san francisco in the 60s through the weekend with the morning fog. north bay, east bay, tri-valley temperatures climbing each day as we head toward honesmonday. watch what happens. here is the jet stream that will sag a little farther south next couple days. so no 90s, the heat will stay in check. temperatures right where they should be with a slight climb for monday, but right back down as we head towards tuesday and wednesday. sooff all temperatures not extremely hot the this upcoming week, but we will still feel like summer ech once we hit monday the fourth of july. >> thank you very much. much more ahead. coming up, an old hotel that has been considered seedy and an

>> right now -- >> reporter: this hotel for the down and out was so notorious the city sued past managers over the sordid conditions. but now, the hotel's future is taking a step up. last year the city contracted with the nonprofit community housing partnership to take over the hotel's management. >> we upgraded the bathrooms. >> reporter: but the biggest change, the group is installing what has become known as homeless navigation services. it will house 24 hour social services for the homeless with meals and on-site laundry. >> folks living in the streets need a period where they really stabilize. >> reporter: until now, state has been a foreign word in a place known for violence and drugs. the new vibe suits ronald hale, one of 50 residents still living in the building. >> it's safe, clean. management seems to be concerned about our welfare. >> reporter: advocates say the city's one current navigation snf has become effective and

looking at clear skies, as well. 55 in santa cruz and 52 half moon bay, 56 in san francisco. look at the highs later on. going to be much more comfortable than they have beenoff the past couple of days. we're getting out of the 90s but still manage 87 degrees for liver mond livermore, comfortable this oakland, up to 73, but again cool at the coastline from san francisco down towards santa cruz, we're only expecting low to mid-60s. so if you're headed to the beach, keep in mind we do have a risk for rip currents because of the strong high pressure and shifting pressure systems that we're looking at. so what we will be watching is the risk for rip currents. but it ket caugget caught, it p out to sea so you want to try to swim parallel to the shore and that's how you get out of the rip current. so keep in mind very strong risk for the rip currents through the day today and for tomorrow.

we have strong marine layer, as well. so as we get going, we'll see each and every morning with fog at the coastline and that will eventually lead to fog in the inner bay as we head towards tomorrow and i think as we head towards monday, as well. so the fog will be lift us at the coast. warm sunshine for the valleys. and everybody the potential of seeing thunderstorms across the hide country. really from about yosemite down towards las vegas. but i don't think it will be much more than just a few low thunderstorms that only last a couple of hours. so not looking at widespread rain. after today, sunday and monday look dry across the entire state. temperatures actually will start to go up as we head toward sunday and monday. south bay low to mid 80s and upper 80s by monday. peninsula, 70s through the rest of the holiday weekend. san francisco, that's where you'll see the morning fog, afternoon sunshine, but temperatures again staying cool there. we're talking low to mid-60s. north bay 80s, east shore 70s and again the tri-valley where you had the 90s, finally coming

>> reporter: graduation day at the san francisco fire academy. after enduring a 20 week course of training, 48 recruits have realized their dream to become firefighters. but for others, the experience has been a nightmare. a moroccan immigrant dreamed of following his brother's foot steps into the department. but all that ended amid rayi racist abuse. two years ago he says he was doing well this training but struggled with a ladder. >> it slipped a bit and made a thump and he told me he says don't treat my ladder like you treat your wife. >> reporter: during a drill days later, the same instructor ridiculed his muslim faith. >> when i started going, i was facing the wrong direction and he yelled at me and he said number one, what the f, are you

facing mecca. >> would i allow that type of comment? absolutely not. >> reporter: the division of training chief tells nbc bay area that since he took command earlier this year, the state fire marshal as certified the academy program. trainers now must adhere to a code of ethics, support diversity and refrain from hazing recruits. >> be professional, treat people fairly. treat everybody the same just like they would want to be treated. >> reporter: another ex-recruit says he, too, was targeted for abuse and he says he has the scores scars to prove it. >> i got heat rash and i wasn't even in the live burn room yet. >> reporter: brian sullivan says he was forced to drop out after suffering abscess and burnlike marks. >> did you believe this was tore occur? >> in a way, yes. >> reporter: he says he and others were made to drill for hours in heavy turnouts, even in midday heat. >> it was like a bad movie.

surgery. another claims he was marked down for poor grooming even after reporting he had a painful skin condition triggered by close shaving. theirs is not the first such lawsuit. while african-american firefighter larry jacobs finish training, he alleged instructors called him a house boy and made him scrub floors and toilets with a toothbrush. he also wasn't hallowed to eat with other recruits. he walked away with a $175,000 settlement in 2014. his lawyer of his representing the fire former recruits suing. the only way the abuse will he said oig she says is for insiders to tap up like they did for jacobs. >> some were hired, some were not, who say this happened, nobody would have believed it. >> reporter: aziz suspects he was targeted after hejacobs.
