community center on the peninsula. all of this happening in millbrae. it started just before 4:00 this morning. bob redell has been on the scene all morning long. bob, are crews making good progress there? >> well, the smoke on this side of the millbrae community center, sam, has just turned white within i would say the past ten minutes which the usually an indication that the water is doing a pretty good job of dousing the flames inside. we are seeing plenty of flames on the other side of the building where the fire is still blasting through the roof. i don't know if you can see that second ladder. that's dumping water on that section of the building i was just referring to. fire started around 3:50 this morning. the fire grew so fast, so large, that the command staff called for a second, third, and fourth alarm. that means they called for backup, extra support three times. there are about 60 men and women fighting this fire from several fire departmenting including south city, sam bruno, bruno, and central county heading up
6:03 am
the command. the fire had been burning for over two hours. we just spoke with the central county fire chief who said this fire is so difficult to put you because it's extended into the very large attic space. >> attic fires are notoriously difficult to fight because it's hard to predict where they are, where they're going. so our crews right now are trying to isolate that. it's a large attic as well as an older building. so a large volume of fire already in there. trying to control that is difficult. >> because it's old i'm assuming there are no fire breaks? >> well, right now we don't know what the actual design of the interior attic is. but right now that's h the problem is it tends to run in the attic if it doesn't have the fire breaks. >> reporter: this fire exemplifies just how dangerous firefighting can be. we've seen several firefighters going inside the building with full oxygen masks and gear. one firefighter telling me he has zero visibility, couldn't see the hands in front of his face. and one reason why they've been going i side is trying to do an
6:04 am
attack on the ceilings inside, get into the attic space, throw water up from the floor up into the attic space. they also been doing an attack from the top overhead where you have the snorkel ladders with the hoses attached to them. then from the other side where they have hose lines. one firefighter tells me that he believes this fire started from the outside. though this is too preliminary according to the fire chief to determine that. we did speak with a rest debt who was out here when there was just smoke coming out of the building and it was his impression, he's familiar with the community center, that it started in the kitchen area. reporting live in millbrae, rbo redell, "today in the bay." more breaking news now. dangerous and scary situation in brisbane overnight as shots were fired at a large party. about midnight police responded to reports of a party near the intersection of bay shore and industrial. they arrived on scene to find roughly 300 people partying in a field behind awa warehouse. as police shut the party down

6:38 am
arrested on the spot here at the maple state correctional facility on the women's side, but they do accept men here, too. and this is likely where he's going to end up after he is booked at the main jail in san mateo county. he was arrested on failure to stop for that officer and also on suspicion of driving under the influence. now, it's possible that that suspect did not know what this facility was because it is so new and only opened back in march. only started accepting men in april. it doesn't show up on all of the maps. so he likely did not know where he was fleeing to as he was fleeing law enforcement. in redwood city, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you very much. black lives matter protesters have chained themselves to the doors of the open police officer's association and planning to stay there for 24 hours. they're calling for the city to take funding from the police department and put money into
