we talk to someone who grabbed his own exclusive as well with a russian banker. good morning, keir simmons. >> reporter: good morning, that's right. yesterday it was denial after denial after denial from president putin. he denied that his government was involved in hacking, denied that the russians had intervened in u.s. elections and denied that there was a deal with the trump administration to lift sanctions. president vladimir putin on the defensive last night, telling nbc news megyn kelly that hackers elsewhere could have framed russia. >> translator: hackers can be anywhere. they can be in russia, in asia, even in america, latin america. there can even be hackers, by the way, in the united states. very skillfully and professionally shifted the blame, as we say, onto russia. can you imagine something like

that? in the midst of a political battle. by some calculations, it was convenient for them to release this information so they released it, citing russia. could you imagine something like that? i can. >> reporter: putin backpedaling a day earlier, saying russia couldn't have been involved. if those hackers feel patriotic, they may try to contribute to the fight to those who talk badly about russia. putin in the international forum he is hosting in st. petersburg. meanwhile, the investigation into russia widens, disclosing the meeting with jared kushner.

as keir just alluded to, megyn kelly's exclusive interview with vladimir putin debuts tomorrow night right here on nbc. fbi director james comey set to testify publicly at a congressional hearing on thursday, but could the trump administration silence him? nbc's kelly o'donnell has more on that. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. in the face of criticism and controversy, the trump white house is trying to focus on its own agenda and anywhere where it has some power. and that could lead to a long shot and difficult challenge this week. even though the president has talked about his own conversations and tweeted about his conversations with james comey, will he attempt to use a presidential authority to keep comey quiet? president trump and james comey. the fbi director he fired could be headed for a new power struggle this week. comey is set to go public thursday about the russian

investigation. but the white house is not ruling out a move that could block comey from testifying on capitol hill by claiming an executive branch privilege that protects the privacy of a president's conversations with senior officials. in a new letter, democratic lawmakers warned the white house, any assertion of privilege by the president would be seen as an effort to obstruct the truth. that preemptive strike came after white house officials, including press secretary sean spicer, said legal options are on the table. >> i think obviously it's got to be reviewed. >> that's not a no. >> i've not spoken to counsel yet. i don't know how they're going to respond. >> reporter: getting answers prove difficult on another issue. >> thank you very much, everybody. this is slightly less controversial than yesterday. >> reporter: after president trump broke with nations around the world over climate change. temperatures rose in the briefing room. epa administrator scott pruitt and the press secretary

deflected all questions, and the president's own view on climate change after candidate trump mocked the science. >> does the president believe today that climate change is a hoax? >> yes or no? does the president believe climate change is real? >> does the president still believe climate change is a hoax? >> reporter: neither pruitt nor spicer had any answer. >> i have not had the opportunity to have that discussion. >> reporter: and legal experts say the conditions make it difficult for the white house to assert that executive privilege regarding comey, but it's still not determined what the white house will try to do. now, today we could expect to see a lot of that civic activism with organizers for what they call the march for truth, staging rallies and marches around the country and their claim is they want to see an independent and thorough investigation of all the russian matters even coming into the white house. craig? >> kelly o'donnell from the white house this morning. kelly, thank you.

today shock waves are still resonating at pennsylvania university. the death of a former pledge and a student sent to prison. >> reporter: following the death of 19-year-old fraternity entrance caused an urgent meeting of the board of trustees. >> it's a way to make sure the future of greek life exists in a sustainable way. >> reporter: instead they chose other reforms, including taking control of fraternity discipline, restrictions on social events and pushing back recruitment until later in the school year. >> we believe the government's model is broken. >> reporter: but his family says those changes do not go far enough. >> what i heard was a lot of aspirational language with absolutely not one concrete

action taken. >> reporter: prosecutors say piazza's blood alcohol level was four times the legal limit in february when he tumbled down a flight of stairs at the bet betbeta beta theta pi house. it would be 12 hours before anyone would call 911. >> nobody should consume that much alcohol. that's torture. >> reporter: 18 fraternity brothers face charges, ranging from hazing to involuntary manslaughter. they have not yet entered pleas. beta theta pi's office says they're cooperating fully. all while there was another scandal here at penn state, another case where university officials were accused of inaction. three former administrators, including a former president, were sentenced to several months in jail for not telling police early enough about coach jerry

sandusky's sexual abuse of children. for today, nbc, gabe gutierrez, pennsylvania. three officers were shot after a wild gun fight on the streets of laredo, texas. the fire fight started friday when officers spotted a murder suspect outside a convenience store. they had been searching for him in connection with the killing of his girlfriend. when police approached, that suspect opened fire. one officer is in critical condition, two other officers are in serious but stable condition. meanwhile, the 55-year-old suspect reportedly shot by police was pronounced dead at the hospital. ariana grande is back in manchester today. victims of the bombing after her concert were posing in pictures with her on friday. young dane farrell mann tweeted, i got to meet my queen tomorrow.

grande will hold a benefit concert that also includes justin bieber and katy perry. in one case an electrical fire broke out after a woman drove her car into water and it caught fire. a front loader dumped water on it twice. she was okay but the mercedes met its end. good thing he knew how to run a front loader. >> good skill to have. out of alberta, canada, of all places, we have a tornado video caught on camera. it is clearly moving over some dirty terrain there. you can see that dirt being pulled up into that funnel cloud and it was just swirling around. there was no reported injuries,

which is fantastic news, because that is a huge storm. imagine if you're just driving down the street and seeing that. unusual to see such severe weather up across canada, but we will see that make its way into the northern part of the united states, especially as we go into the next couple of days. for right now, though, we're watching for the potential of more heavy rain in dallas. we also have heavy storms moving through wisconsin. as the system moves eastward, we will continue to see more and more storms fire up through the afternoon today, through wisconsin, and then tomorrow we'll see them across mostly the eastern great lakes and also down across the tennessee river valley. so today's best chance of seeing those stronger storms, duluth and also through green bay, wisconsin where we could see we are waking up to some foggy conditions along the coastline in san francisco. hazy skies for the south bay right now at 57 degrees. also in the 50s in this area and san francisco, expect to keep

block former fbi director james comey from testifying on thursday. sending a letter saying, any assertion of privilege would amount to obstruction of justice. surfing pioneer jack o'neill passed away. o'neill was 94 years old. let's turn to kathy griffin, under fire for posting that vile head of president trump. friday she held a news conference saying the trumps are targeting her. she said her career is over and that she's even received death threats. nbc's gadi schwartz is in los angeles with the latest on that. gadi, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. kathy griffin standing by her apology. she says she's also going to continue making fun of the president. she said the backlash she's received is because of sexism, but her critics say she brought this controversy on herself.

most ambitious space issue ever. the goal is to literally touch the face of the sun. >> reporter: nasa's new lightning probe will be traveling at 450,000 miles an hour, covering the distance from washington to philadelphia in just one second, first flying past venus and then on to the sun. >> that space between planets is a lot more exciting with a lot more science going on than anybody predicted. >> reporter: the issue of the probe now in final assembly, it orbits the sun and looking at okola, famous for -- >> why does the sun constantly throw mass ejections towards us?

rain. it's actually good rain because it's helping with the drought situation. areas like miami have picked up more than 5 inches of rain yesterday alone. that was the second wettest june day on record. a lot of rain fell in miami. other areas picked up inches of rain. it also helps with the drought that we're seeing. especially in the middle of the state is where we have significant drought conditions. 72% of florida is in a state of drought. so with another one to two inches of rain widespread across the state and isolated higher amounts closer to 3 to 5 inches through next week, we are going to see that help reduce the threat of that drought a little bit. we also have potential flooding near dallas, texas. late day storms, nothing too 50s and hanging low clouds, especially along the peninsula. overcast now at 50 degrees. south bay looking hazy as well at 57 degrees, and for the

about, "wonder woman." earlier box office numbers are out, and they are fantastic. domestically, the film raked in a spectacular $11 million in thursday night reviews. that's the third largest for 2017. the film is expected to make around $100 million this weekend, which would make it the largest opening ever for a movie directed by a female. since we're talking numbers and female firsts, i should also mention at 150 million, this is the most expensive movie ever directed by a woman as well. given "wonder woman's" success so far, this looks like money well spent. 93% rating on rotten tomatoes. very good reviews. >> like i said, field trip. oh, the places you'll go, a museum for the young and young at heart. first, this is "today" on nbc. , the in-laws have moved in with us.
