back in paris the new olympic rivalry. he china became team usa's toughest competitor. the heroes come. we're there as the athletes return to the u.s. the celebrations to welcome them back. this is "nbc nightly news" with jose diaz-balart. >> and good evening. i'm tom llamas in for jose tonight. here in paris we are just hours away from the closing ceremonies which will be the capstone to one of the most thrilling olympics in years. and today was no different. many of the nba all stars on team usa have won their share of championships, but there was something different about that gold medal victory over france today. on the soccer pitch, the american women were back on top for the first time since 2012. it was this goal that sealed their gold. we're going to hear from those players in a moment. on the final day of track and field, a clean sweep of the 4 x 400-meter relays with the

men and women racing to gold. and the outrage over jordan chiles possibly losing her bronze medal in gymnastics over a mistake her coaches may have made. we begin tonight with stephanie gosk on the final full day of competition and one that brought some of the most gold medals home for team usa. >> for the fifth consecutive olympics the united states of america is golden. >> reporter: make it five. men's basketball won its fifth straight olympic gold tonight in paris in front of a packed arena. the lead going back and forth in the first half. the hometown crowd doing its best to will their side to victory. [ cheers ] they are underdogs tonight, doesn't seem to matter much. they're hoping for an edge, maybe a little luck will help them get the win. the u.s. stars were too much for the french team to handle. steph curry sinking eight three-pointers to get

7:00 central on nbc and peacock. all right. now to our other top story -- breaking news from the trump campaign saying it's been hacked possibly by iran. it comes as new polls show a shift in key battleground states. aaron gilchrest is on the campaign trail with vice president harris in las vegas. >> reporter: the trump campaign tonight saying it was hacked and the documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources. the statement after the news site "politico" said it was sent trump campaign documents from an anonymous email account purporting to be internal communications and research dossier on j.d. vance. the campaign alleging the hack was intended to interfere with the 2024 election, pointing to a microsoft statement on friday that it was tracing activity that increasingly points to iran's intent to influence this year's presidential election. nbc news has not independently verified the hack. the latest headache for the truffle trump campaign

saying the vice president rallied 15,000 supporters in arizona as part of the new democratic ticket swing state tour. a new poll shows kamala harris lead willing in michigan, pennsylvania, and wisconsin is. within the margin of an error, an improvement after trump was tried or ahead of president biden in those states before he left the race. the kamala harris campaign tonight also facing new criticism focused on vice presidential candidate governor tim walz's national guard service. doug julen who served with walz spoke to cnn about his retirement before being deployed to iraq. >> the fact is there's a possibility he -- realized i would know it's too late. >> reporter: nbc news has not independently confirmed julen's account. the harris campaign referring us to statements of support from other men who served with walz. >> for 24 years i proudly wore that uniform. according to a spokesperson with gaza's civil defense. there are a lot of people missing, he says, a lot of body that cannot be identified. israel admits they carried out the strikes but claim the school was more than just a shelter for thousands of displaced palestinians. in a statement released tonight, israeli forces said in part they struck terrorists operating in a hamas command and control center embedded inside a mosque in the school compound and killed 19 militants using three precise munitions. this was just one of a series of deadly air strikes in gaza over the last 24 hours. and civilians in the line of fire, all they see is devastation. >> ellison joins us from israel. and tensions were already heightened there about a possible strike from iran. where does that threat stand tonight? >> reporter: yeah, tom, a political

adviser to iran's supreme leader released a statement this morning accusing israel of trying to ignite a regional war and vowing to impose the, quote, harshest punishment on israel. tom? >> ellison barber for us. thank you. investigators are on the scene of that terrifying plane crash in brazil. its horrifying plunge caught on camera. all on board were killed. they now have the black boxes as they try to figure out exactly what went wrong. melissa parra has the latest. >> reporter: new information tonight on this haunting scene. a plane spinning slowly as it drops from the sky. crashing in a brazilian neighborhood near sao paolo leaving behind an inferno of black smoke towering over the homes the plane crashed in front of. brazil's voepasse airline updating the number of those who perished from 61 to 62. 58 passengers and four crew members. the airline saying the

plane had passed technical inspection the night before, adding they're evaluating icy conditions at the altitude the plane was flying at. while brazilian investigators say ground controllers did not receive an emergency signal. the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder from the plane now recovered and taken to a lab. >> if there's something catastrophic that appears to have happened on that airplane that caused the pilots to lose all control. >> reporter: brazil's president declaring three days of national mourning. marissa parra, nbc news. and back here at home, we're getting our first look at never-before-seen footage of the moments following that horrific school shooting in uvalde, texas, two years ago. priscilla thompson has more on what the new tapes reveal, and a warning, what you're about to see can be difficult to watch. >> reporter: newly released body cam video from the robb elementary school shooting appears to capture the moment officers took down the

chiles of her olympic bronze medal in the individual floor event. the court of arbitration for sport ruling an inquiry by chiles' coaches into the score which bumped chiles from fifth to third came four seconds too late, and because of that chiles' lower score will now be reinstated. the controversial decision comes after a dramatic moment when judges accepted that inquiry in the final moments of competition. the romanian gymnast, ana barbosu, celebrating her bronze medal, then breaking down in tears as she learned that chiles had gotten it instead. >> devastating. >> reporter: then this iconic moment. chiles celebrating along with fellow medalists simone biles and rebeca andrade. >> crying, those emotions. >> reporter: now the judges have reversed that decision saying the appeal by chiles' team came four seconds after the required timeframe of one minute. >> four seconds? four? >> reporter: in a statement, usa gymnastics writing "we are
