[ laughter ] when asked about the drones, marjorie taylor greene said the government is in control of them. >> steve: hm. >> jimmy: i want to believe her, but she said the same thing about the weather, the super bowl, and the return of the mcrib. so i don't know. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: congratulations. >> but they all know you're doing the show too. >> jimmy: how do we describe it? >> it's -- okay, so -- >> jimmy: i'm really nervous. i'm looking forward to it. >> you have nothing to be nervous about. simon rich wrote it. so -- >> jimmy: yeah, i love him. >> he's so funny. i worked with him on "snl." and it's just short stories, and we're reading them. we're just reading them, but there's a lot of sound design. and it draws you into the writing. so, this performance -- but the pieces are so funny. >> jimmy: yeah. you know, you're a good comedian, you're a very good friend of the show. you're a very talented musician, by the way. >> oh, thank you. >> jimmy: and, yeah, every time you're here you either bring a a new musical impression, or some type of impression, and you have a new one for us tonight. >> yes. so, you've all gone to see concerts and stuff, and you know, there'll be like, a drum solo in the middle of the show. like, you'll some band playing, and then there's a drum solo. all drum solos are designed the same way.

so, i'm going to break it down for you. i'm going to break it down for you, like, how drum solos work. >> jimmy: okay, great. >> if you don't mind. >> jimmy: do you need anything? >> i need a drum kit. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: we always have an extra drum kit ready for you, just in case. >> really? >> jimmy: yes. can we bring it out? [ cheers and applause ] there it is. that's the drum kit right there. ♪ yeah, so we're just -- >> do we go over? >> jimmy: yeah, let's go over. >> let's go over. ♪ >> jimmy: all right, thank you for doing this. i appreciate this. >> how you doing, by the way? >> jimmy: i'm doing okay, yeah. is everything -- ♪ i can't believe it, so fun. all right, here we go. ♪ >> so, thank you. okay, so -- you've all gone to shows. whenever you see a band play, everyone will be playing at the same time. so, it's the band and the drummer will be playing at a a tempo that's, kind of, like, in here somewhere -- [ drumsticks clapping ] just so there's enough room to kind of like, do fills and stuff. so, everyone's playing together, you know. ♪ [ cheers and applause ] just like a regular groove.

♪ and then the band will drop out. all right? so, the band drops out, and the drummer will do something super simplistic to throw off the audience. so, it'll be a little of like -- ♪ [ light laughter ] so, the audience is like, "oh, no. something went wrong." it's just to sort of throw you off. [ light laughter ] then the drummer will put in some kick drum to bring the audience back in. ♪ no cymbals yet. ♪ then it'll start getting busier. ♪ and it sounds like a real drum solo. [ light laughter ] so i -- me and my childhood best friend, harley quinn smith, who i -- who i did my first movie with, we had this one song that we were working on called "elephant love." [ laughter ] but i don't think we ever -- >> jimmy: 6-year-old band, no? >> yeah, yeah, really profound stuff. i don't know -- i don't think we ever actually finished the song. but at some point the band had to break up. and we didn't -- we didn't quite go all the way. >> jimmy: now, how did that -- how did that meeting go? >> i have, like, a very faint memory of it. obviously it was pre-cellphone or anything like that. so, i feel like i probably had my mom call, like, harley's mom and connect us. and then i feel like i was, like, away, and probably said something like, you know, "i'm not able to be present right now for the band." and, yeah. >> jimmy: there are no lyrics. >> there are no lyrics. >> jimmy: but it's so -- it's so different, and great, and there's different wind instruments and -- and flutes. how long have you been playing the flute? >> i've been playing the particular flute that got me down this path for about seven years. >> jimmy: i don't know if you know about this, but there was a whole thing on the internet of people finding you, who -- who were like, going, "wait, i think i just ran into andre 3000 playing his flute." like, you would play at like, a a gas station and stuff. or a starbucks, or at an airport. >> yeah, it's kind of like, you know how when you have your phone, and you're usually just you know, scrolling and look at it, i'll play flute. so, it'll just be something i'll do if i'm waiting on my coffee to get made, or something like that. >> jimmy: you start playing the flute? >> yeah, yeah. and it's -- what's crazy, 'cause i was spending a lot of time in philly working on the film. and so, i'd walk around philly playing a lot. and so -- and so people were like -- people would stop me in the street, and they'd be like, "you know, it's a game now."
