so, i'm going to break it down for you. i'm going to break it down for you, like, how drum solos work. >> jimmy: okay, great. >> if you don't mind. >> jimmy: do you need anything? >> i need a drum kit. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: we always have an extra drum kit ready for you, just in case. >> really? >> jimmy: yes. can we bring it out? ♪ and then the band will drop out. all right? so, the band drops out, and the drummer will do something super simplistic to throw off the audience. so, it'll be a little of like -- ♪ [ light laughter ] so, the audience is like, "oh, no. something went wrong." it's just to sort of throw you off. [ light laughter ] then the drummer will put in some kick drum to bring the audience back in. ♪ no cymbals yet. ♪ then it'll start getting busier. ♪ and it sounds like a real drum solo. [ cheers ] ♪ and it kind of builds up like that. and then the drummer will start playing parts of a drum kit that aren't usually played. [ laughter ] [ clicking ] [ laughter ] so, you're going, "whoa! i didn't know that was part of the drum set! oh, i can't believe it. [ thumping ]

[ laughter ] whoa!" and then the drummer w will star going into the cymbals so it becomes, like, a wash. so, there's a -- ♪ and every drum solo, just to get the band back into it, every drum solo ends with this pattern. [ light laughter ] that's fantastic. >> i'm a lucky girl. >> jimmy: you've always been into music. i read somewhere -- and i don't know if this is true -- that you started a band when you were six? >> yes. yes. >> jimmy: now, what does a 6-year-old band like, what do they write about? >> well, we actually had a a quite specific creative direction. we were called the pink elephants, and it was all about elephants, with the whole thing.

[ light laughter ] so i -- me and my childhood best friend, harley quinn smith, who i -- who i did my first movie with, we had this one song that we were working on called "elephant love." [ laughter ] but i don't think we ever -- >> jimmy: 6-year-old band, no? >> yeah, yeah, really profound stuff. i don't know -- i don't think we ever actually finished the song. but at some point the band had to break up. and we didn't -- we didn't quite go all the way. >> jimmy: now, how did that -- how did that meeting go? >> i have, like, a very faint memory of it. obviously it was pre-cellphone or anything like that. so, i feel like i probably had my mom call, like, harley's mom and connect us. and then i feel like i was, like, away, and probably said something like, you know, "i'm not able to be present right now for the band." [ laughter ] so, i'd feel like, you know -- >> jimmy: not be present for the pink-elephants. >> yeah. "and it deserves more than i can give it right now." [ laughter ] >> jimmy: i love this little 6-year-old meeting. >> yeah, so -- >> jimmy: any chance that we'll see a reunion of the band? a tour? >> you never know. >> jimmy: a tour. next summer?

[ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: great performance. >> thank you. >> jimmy: were you always a fan of the story? do you know the -- >> yeah. i -- i was always a fan of the dracula tale. my brother and i were obsessed with abbott and costello as kids. >> jimmy: oh, yeah. me too. >> and, you know, they have a a whole, like, "meet the monsters" series. >> jimmy: that's my favorite. >> we particularly were drawn to the "meet dracula" one, the bela lugosi. and my brother was, like, three or four at the time, and he started dressing up like dracula, and doing these kind of, like, really seriouous line rdings of the lines. so, in a way, i grew up as, like, older sister to dracula. >> jimmy: wow. so this is, in a weird way, a a little full circle. >> so, it's totally full circle. when i heard that, you know, when i got the opportunity to audition for this movie, i thought, like, you know, "how full circle, and maybe i'll get some cool points with my bro." >> jimmy: yeah. and did you? >> i think so. i mean, he saw the movie. he loved the movie. >> jimmy: he's, like, "not a

[ cheers and applause ] >> thank you. >> jimmy: but this is different than your previous albums. this is not a rap album, right? >> no. >> jimmy: it is not. >> no. >> jimmy: so, how -- how would you describe the sound? >> very open, trusting, freeform. yeah, exploration, that's what it is. >> jimmy: yeah. i thought it was one of the coolest moves ever done in music. i was, like -- when it came out, people were like, "wait, what is this?"

[ light laughter ] i mean, they really were. i mean, the first track is called "i swear, i really wanted to make a 'rap' album but this literally is the way the wind blew me this time." [ laughter ] that the name of the song. >> that is very real, very -- i mean, i know y'all laughing at it, but it's -- >> jimmy: i know. >> it is very, very honest. 'cause this whole time i have been, you know, still proding, making beats, and trying to actually do a vocal rap kind of situation, 'cause i'm still a fan of rap. but that wasn't on tap right now. and just happened to be what i was doing at the time. so i was like, "i enjoy this. let me share it." >> jimmy: i mean, you even put it on the back of the album, "warning, no bars." [ laughter ] you're letting everyone know there are no bars. "i do not rap on this album." >> yeah, we -- we tried, but we didn't do a great job. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: you could've made the warning a little bigger. yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. >> i know. i mean, you had some people that are really, really angry at me, man. yeah, they were like -- it was like, "i was listening to it, and i was waiting for some lyrics to come in."

and, yeah. >> jimmy: there are no lyrics. >> there are no lyrics. >> jimmy: but it's so -- it's so different, and great, and there's different wind instruments and -- and flutes. how long have you been playing the flute? >> i've been playing the particular flute that got me down this path for about seven years. >> jimmy: i don't know if you know about this, but there was a whole thing on the internet of people finding you, who -- who were like, going, "wait, i think i just ran into andre 3000 playing his flute." like, you would play at like, a a gas station and stuff. or a starbucks, or at an airport. >> yeah, it's kind of like, you know how when you have your phone, and you're usually just you know, scrolling and look at it, i'll play flute. so, it'll just be something i'll do if i'm waiting on my coffee to get made, or something like that. >> jimmy: you start playing the flute? >> yeah, yeah. and it's -- what's crazy, 'cause i was spending a lot of time in philly working on the film. and so, i'd walk around philly playing a lot. and so -- and so people were like -- people would stop me in the street, and they'd be like, "you know, it's a game now."

like, "you know people are trying to find you. and we'll tweet -- [ laughter ] and we'll say, 'well, he's at this park.'" and you know, and then -- 'cause i'll be sitting in the park playing for a a while, you know, just -- >> jimmy: because no one knew what was going on. they're like, "i didn't even know that you played the flute." >> yeah, so it was kind of like -- i guess it -- i don't know. i don't know. >> jimmy: yeah. and what are you performing for us tonight? >> tonight we're doing a a rendition of "buypolodisorder's daughter wears a 3,000 shirt embroidered." [ light laughter ] you got all that? >> jimmy: no. but i do -- >> questlove: bars! >> jimmy: yeah, no bars. yeah. that -- those are the bars, yeah, exactly. but some of these track lists -- this one's called "that night in hawaii when i turned into a a panther and stard making these low register purring tones that i couldn't control." [ low purring ] [ laughter ] >> yeah. >> jimmy: oh, that's interesting. [ low purring ] that is -- wow. it's just so good and different.

and you said every performance is a little different. nothing's the same. >> yeah. yeah. we are trusting. so, before we go out, you know, we get in our huddle, and we just look at each other, you know, touch each other's shoulder and say, "fly free." and that's what we're trying to do. we're trying to really fly free with it. and the reward is much different, because you have to listen every second to know what's happening. and it's just a different muscle, different exercise than going and, you know, performing verses and choruses that you've written. >> jimmy: yeah. >> you know, it's just a a different -- different type of thing. both are rewarding in their own ways. but this is, kind of -- i guess where i was in my life, in this tempo and volume where i am, at this age it just felt appropriate. >> jimmy: thanks for trusting our show to perform, and do this for us tonight. >> no, thank you for having us. >> jimmy: a lot of people are gonna be -- [ cheers and applause ] congrats on all the -- all the award noms. i know, these -- andre 3000, everybody.
