receive their diplomas. oh, really? which did not bother virginia hyslop in the least. what's a few more minutes to wait for something she earned back in 1940? yes, 84 years ago, the now 105 year old virginia was working on her master's degree in education at stanford. virginia was almost done when, as she puts it, life intervened. it was the e eve of world war t, and virginia's husband, george, was a newly appointed second lieutenant in the u.s. army. his unit was called up, and virginia soon found herself 1500 miles away from stanford in fort sill, oklahoma. which is not exactly my idea of a place to take a honeymoon, but i didn't have much choice in the matter. there were soon two children to raise, and virginia never got back to that advanced degree in education, which, it should be
7:16 am
noted, never hindered virginia from a lifetime of work in education. no. had absolutely no effect. virginia spent decades on boards and committees at every level of schooling, from kindergarten to college, in her new hometown of yakima, washington. gave it a great deal of thought and tried to improve the education where i lived. that's not going to stay on. what virginia didn't give a lot of thought to, though i've had that trouble before, was that degree. but recently, her son in law contacted stanford and learned something amazing. you see, at the time virginia left stanford in 1940, she had all the credit she needed to graduate, just hadn't completed a master's thesis. well, since then, that thesis requirement has been dropped, meaning virginia legitimately has all the credit she needs and has earned that degree. and so, at the graduate school of education commencement, alongside 160 members of the class of 2024,
7:17 am
there was a single member of the class of 1940. and as virginia got up on stage, the crowd got up on their feet. virginia views it all as recognition, not just of what she did 80 plus years ago, but of all the work in education she has done since. my goodness, i've waited a long time. shanna zenni. it's a lesson the rest of today's graduates would do well to take away. a diploma is nice, sure, but not necessarily needed to go out and me the world a better place. and i do think i made a difference in our community at stanford university. garvin thomas nbc, bay area news. wow. virginia, we salute you. congratulations. 17 past the hour. right now, today is the fourth day of kwanzaa. the fourth principle is ujama, which

have been the center of the storms that we've seen over the last month or so. this is with us until about noon. those excessive rainfall rates and the already saturated soil could be some possible downed trees later, maybe even some minor landslides. so we'll continue to watch that. no major alerts on our rivers up there, but i'll keep an eye on that as the morning goes on. now, speaking of the morning, the front has pushed on through through parts of the east bay hercules, lafayette, down into san ramon and out towards antioch, the peninsula also getting soaked from parts of daly city down into san mateo. and those lighter rain rates right now through parts of palo alto, down into san jose. but it will get here, giving the north bay a break at around maybe nine 10:00, while the rest of us see that heavy rain and the front pushing through. so just be careful with that. and you could hear it just coming down on your rooftops as we go on into the mid morning hours. but then after that we go into some clear mode activation as we go on and enjoy our final sunday afternoon
7:23 am
here. now, as far as rainfall rates go, we'll keep an eye on the north bay, maybe another half an inch for parts of mill valley. notice that the santa cruz mountains also going to get soaked today. but then as we travel east and south, we'll we'll be lucky if we squeeze out about a quarter of an inch, depending on where those stormy clouds decide to stall. along with this, we also have that gusty wind with us until this afternoon. notice just about everybody in the bay area is under this wind advisory, where those gusts could be up to 50 miles an hour. so again, with the trees, with the power and the driving conditions. and speaking of driving conditions, i do not recommend going to the sierra today. we do have the winter weather advisory until eight tonight. those gusty ridge tops, maybe 100 mile an hour plus i see better driving conditions. i promise for monday and tuesday. so aside from the rainy end to our weekend here, we will be drying out. but notice that we will bring down those temperatures into the 30s. so cold air mass behind the

numbers as we go on into tuesday and wednesday, new year's day. but as far as new year's day, new year's travel, we look at better clearing for people heading up and down the state, maybe east towards tahoe las vegas. that looks clear to go also for tuesday, but we could be looking at maybe squeezing out some rain as we go on into the second half of the week. we'll see how far south that storm track decides to move. so overall, after a stormy morning morning for today, we will get into some clearing for monday night football there, but the morning will start off cold. also continuing for tuesday. please bundle up if you are holding any new year's eve events. going to some, it would be very good for you to bring a jacket. if your friend doesn't want one, bring one for them because they will need it. as we look at those lows down into the 30s and 40s in san francisco, of course we'll be watching the fog, see how it affects the fireworks as the days go on. always. every year. all right, cynthia, thanks so much. 45 past the hour. we have much more ahead on today in the bay.

never a dull moment, right? when it comes to elections, you think you're done, but you're not done. you know, there's so many issues to talk about when it comes to this state. the fifth largest economy in the whole world, if you just separate it. but but let's just pick on three at least to get us going here. the first one that always comes to mind is the budget. it's $290 billion budget this year. the deficit right now is forecasted to be about 2 billion. but the problem is 70% of the state's budget comes from income taxes, personal income taxes. so if jobs go away, boom, the deficit grows. so it's always so touchy. t beyond that, we want to talk about two other ones. a housing is a problem in this state, 3.5 million short. and it ranks 49th in terms of housing availability. governor newsom said he would wipe that out, and unfortunately, not much of a change happened. and then the other thing we want to talk about, of course, is homelessness. homelessness is so critical in the state. kira 34% of the nation's homelessness is in california. we're only 12% of
7:51 am
the population. so it's a problem that hits this state more than many others aost any other. so this is another thing that any governor candidate is going to have to work on. we have 34% of the nation's homelessness. wow. that's a staggering. so let's talk about candidates. who are we looking at i assume? well, we know newsom is out. newsome is out. term limits. term limits. so who's who's in the running? okay, so rumors we start with an obvious. and that's the attorney general, rob bonta. why do i say the obvious? because attorney generals in the state quite often are the ones who wind up being governor more so than others, by the way. so this is this is pretty interesting. we want to look at katie porter. she leads the progressive wing of the california democratic party, lost to adam schiff for the u.s. senate nomination. she is still very much a force eleni kounalakis the governor, the lieutenant governor. excuse me, deep pockets. she practically self-funded her own campaign. she is lieutenant governor. that gives her a little bit of

cachet, so to speak. she's already announced that she's going to run. and then, of course, the big wild card when it comes to democrats at least, would be kamala harris. what does she do? she's really at a at a pivotal point in her political career. does she go ahead and run for the governorship? if she does, it pretty much rules her out for running for the presidency. if she doesn't, that means she may be a candidate for president. so. so we're really going to be watching her. she could clear the deck if she chooses to run. and so those are democrats. what about republicans? who are their potential candidates right now? republicans, of course, haven't had much of a foothold in this state, although the republican vote for trump went out from 29% to 38% in 2024. so they're they're flickering, so to speak. brian dahle, who is the former state senate minority leader, ran against newsom for governor in 2022. at that point, he won 34%. he is a possible candidate. chad bianco, a name we don't know here in northern california, but a very popular
7:53 am
riverside county sheriff who has criticized newsom for not being tough enough on crime. and remeer, proposition 36 was that big tough on crime issue. so he's got a little bit of wind to his back there. a big wild card here. a big wild card is another name we don't know much about here but is in southern california. and that's rick caruso who's rick caruso. well, he was a republican turned independent turned democrat who spent $100 million of his money just recently to lose to l.a. mayor karen bass. he's a moderate who could go back to republican roots or run as a democrat or who knows? but the bottom line is we have a lot of candidates for what many people say is the most important gubernatorial election in the country. why? because we're so big here. and yes, are we a leader in the nation? are we weird? those are the kinds of questions people ask. but you got to always watch in this state's governor's race, because that person could very well be on the short list for nominees for president. as a born and raised californian, i take offense to that weird
