the u.s. will take over the gaza strip. >> federal workers are, critical technology was turned off at the time of the collision. >> mother nature continues to pack a punch. good morning and welcome to "sunday today" on this february 9th. i'm joe fryer in for willie this morning. super bowl lix is less than 12 hours away. the kansas city chiefs are taking on the philadelphia eagles for the second time in three years. the chiefs hope to become the first team in history to win three straight super bowls. we'll have the latest in a live report from new orleans, just ahead. plus, our sunday focus at the other big event happening at the super bowl and the reason many of you might be watching, the halftime show. rapper kendrick lamar is ready to take the world by storm with

super bowl lix, the kansas city chiefs on the brink of history as they face the philadelphia eagles. kaylee hartung is in new orleans outside of the superdome where the game will take place and she's already getting in on all of the fun. kaylee, let the good time roll, right. >> as we like to say. this town really turned it up with a super bowl parade, mardi gras style. now that we are just hours away from the biggest tv event of the year, you've got to think that one of these teams will be continuing the celebrations well into the night when they've got the lombardi trophy to show for it. new orleans takes pregaming to a whole new level. the first-ever super bowl weekend parade, rolling through the packed streets of the french quarter saturday. onboard the king's float, i got in on the action.

but now, all eyes turn to the superdome, with nfl history on the line. with the two-time defending champion chiefs thrive by living on the edge. in games decided by just one score or less, kansas city has won 17 straight, an nfl record, including a walk off touchdown to win last year's super bowl in overtime. and two years ago, when they topped philly with a field goal on the final drive. >> how about those chiefs? >> reporter: one more victory for chiefs kingdom would make them the first team ever to three-peat in the super bowl era. but that would require beating the best defense in the nfl >> love in trouble! he is sacked. >> reporter: and the eagles' offense isn't too shabby either. saquon barkley nearly breaking the record for the most rushing yards in a season, as the eagles ran the ball more than any other team.

five games to get here. at 34-5, that is the best record for a super bowl matchup that we've seen in more than 25 years. so my safe bet is on us having an incredible game tonight. that might sound like a copout, but here's the thing. i'm not crazy now have bet against patrick mahomes, but at the same time, the eagles has the best defense in the league and i think they could give the chiefs some problems. we've seen the chiefs hang on, find ways to win every which way throughout the season, but that eagles defense will be a really tough task for them. i want to see saquon barkley have a great night. i really think this one will come down to the wire. >> that is all i want. just a good game and i will feel like a winner. kaylee, thank you so much, appreciate it. now, security will be even tighter than usual today, that's because presidt trump is going to the game. the first sitting president to ever attend. meanwhile, the president is saying he has spoken with russia's president vladimir putin as the three-year anniversary of the start of the ukraine war draws near.

nbc news white house correspondent aaron gilchrist is traveling with the president, he is in west palm beach with the latest. aaron, good morning. >> reporter: joe, good morning to you. president trump revealing that he had spoken to president putin at least once during an interview with the new york post on friday night. the newspaper says they discussed the war in ukraine as the president flew to florida on air force one. mr. trump was asked on camera whether the two leaders had spoken, that was friday afternoon before he left d.c., and at that time he said no. still according to the post he told his national security adviser to start meetings with the russians. now, also overnight the president's newly confirmed budget director russell vought announcing in an email that he is now in charge of the consumer financial protection bureau and lling the staff there to pause almost all of its work unless he approves it, or it's required by law. now, the cfpb is an independent agency created to make sure banks and lenders treat consumers fairly.

we're also going to be watching capitol hill this week, we expect to see confirmation votes on controversial nominees tulsi gabbard for director of national intelligence and robert f. kennedy jr. for health secretary. a busy week indeed. joe? >> aaron gilchrist in west palm beach, thank you so much. kristen welker is moderator of "meet the press." in his first three weeks we have seen president trump try to reshape the federal government, cutting shops, offering buyouts, freezing domestic and foreign spending all with his right-hand man elon musk. some courts have tried to throw a wrench in some of those plans. so for democrats who are in the minority right now, the courts, are they really the best chance democrats have of trying to slow down some of these changes? >> hi, joe. great to be with you. you're absolutely right, the courts are where this battle is playing out, quite frankly. president trump facing currently more than two dozen lawsuits aimed at slowing down some of

those actions, including those deep trims to the staff at usaid which is basically like the government's humanitarian branch on the world stage, aimed at disease prevention, disaster relief, providing food to those who live in famine-ravaged regions. so the question is, though, how effective are the courts? i've been talking to democrats throughout the course of the week, they say, look, it's clear that the courts cannot keep up with the pace and scope of what we are seeing from president trump and elon musk. case in point, mr. trump directing musk to go into the department of defense. it is worth noting musk has billions of dollars in contracts through his various companies with the dod. is that a conflict of interest? democrats notably, joe, also signaling they are not ruling out trying to potentially shut down the government over all of this. so we could see a big battle brewing on capitol hill as well.

we will delve into all of this coming up on the program in just a little bit, joe. >> all right. kristen, thank you so much. and we will look for more this morning on "meet the press" when kristen is joined by democratic senator andy kim of new jersey, poet amanda goreman and trump national security adviser mike waltz. recovery crews have now pulled all of the major pieces of wreckage from the potomac river after that horrible crash between a regional jet and blackhawk helicopter. ntsb investigators are now going over every piece trying to figure out exactly what may have caused the crash. all 67 people on board both aircraft were killed in the january 29th accident. the northeast is digging out this morning from an overnight storm that dropped up to 6 inches of snow in some areas and now there's another storm to worry about in just a matter of days. nbc's maya eaglin is in west hartford, correct cut, with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, joe.

yeah, we are here where about 2 or 3 inches of snow fell overnight, but crews are working to really clear this stuff from the roads. take a look, it's kind of powdery, not ready yet for snowballs but we have a little bit of a wintry mix still coming down from the sky. we spoke to the connecticut state police to give some folks some tips about how to stay safe during this winter weather. they say charge all your devices, only drive if it's an emergency and keep your head lights on at all times if you do hit the roads. also make sure you stay away from the emergency crews who are working to clear the streets for eve everyone. here is where the snow is right now, joe, there is a little wintry weather still happening around the country. it's done in new york city but in portld, burlington they are still getting some snow and expected to be a lake effect later this afternoon. most of the snow should be pushed out later today as low pressure continues throughout the country, but there is another storm on its way starting tomorrow in the plains

tupac and biggie. ♪ don't let the west side ♪ >> reporter: kendrick lamar's "not like us" delivering a knockout punch to his collaborate turned rival and one of the best-selling rap artists of all time, drake. it's been streamed more than a billion times and swept all five grammy categories it was up for, including song and record of the year. >> "not like us," kendrick lamar. >> reporter: lamar and drake have been trading jabs for years, but the beef exploded last spring amid a flurry of dis records. ♪♪ ♪ you not a rap artist, you're a scam artist ♪ >> the feud ending with lamar's takedown track. ♪ certified lover boy, certified pedophile ♪ >> when you accuses drake without any evidence of being a pedophile. last month,rake firing back, though this time not on a beat, but in the courtroom. suing his own record label,

in 2012, mia flipped the middle finger during her set. and who can forget janet jackson's now-infamous wardrobe malfunction with justin timberlake in 2004. the halftime show itself has changed over the years, becoming more diverse since jay-z's rock nation took over in 2019. and despite recent efforts by president trump to eliminate programs that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, the nfl says it will continue to prioritize diversity in the league. helping make this area's halftime celebration look a bit more like all of us. and priscilla joins us now from new orleans. priscilla, good morning. we don't know if kendrick lamar will perform "not like us," in part because there could be some legal issues, right? what can you tell us? >> reporter: right. while kendrick lamar himself may not be sued, there is a chance that the nfl or the network airing it could be. so we could potentially see them

good morning. thanks for joining us on this sunday, february 9th. i'm kira klapper. it has been one month since san francisco's new mayor, danielle lurie, took office, and he marked the occasion by joining hundreds of volunteers with refuse. refuse. that's an organization dedicated to cleaning up the streets. lori helped pick up trash around van ness avenue and bay street. there are about 80 volunteers in laurie's group. organizers say it means a lot to get the spotlight from the mayor, who promised to clean up san francisco during his campaign. there is at least one cleanup in every san francisco zip code every weekend. turning now to president trump's hiring freeze on federal jobs. will it impact the fire fight in california? a california lawmaker is calling on the government to exempt firefighters from that federal hiring freeze. last month, president trump signed an executive order preventing any

new federal hires. that means onboarding for thousands of firefighters in advance of the summer fire season is halted. senator adam schiff responded by sending a letter to several u.s. agencies concerned the freeze will lead to a shortfall of seasonal firefighters. federal agencies typically hire more than 15,000 seasonal crews each year. we're going to turn now to the forecast. and cinthia pimentel. cold out there? yeah, really cold because we have those clear skies and those winds that have calmed down in the overnight hours. a live look over san jose. and we are looking at some freeze and frost alerts for the south bay, for the east bay and up in towards the north bay as well. those purple signifying that the freeze is possible not only today, but notice they're likely through about tuesday as we settle in with this really cold air and those light winds. so we're seeing the numbers right now, 37, in downtown san jose. but you go into south san jose, 39 degrees. those chilly 30s

dropped out of high school and returned, joining nearly 1,000 african-americans who completed the advanced flight training program in tuskegee, alabama. stewart flew 43 missions, earning the distinguished flying cross after downing three enemy aircraft at a battle in germany in 1945. he was raised in queens, new york, and lived near laguardia, airport, where he became fascinated with planes, often going to watch them take off and land. after leaving the air corps, stewart tried to get a job as a commercial airline pilot, but was turned down by the major airlines because of his race. so he went back to get his high school diploma and eventually graduated from new york university with a mechanical engineering degree, going on to work for a number of major companies. in 2007, president george w. bush awarded stewart and the

tuskegee airmen the congressional gold medal, 60 years after their brave accomplishments. his impressive life was chronicled in a biography, "soaring to glory," a tuskegee airman's firsthand account of world war ii. harry stewart jr. one of the last surviving combat veterans of the tuskegee airmen, died last week at his home in bloomfield hills, michigan. he was 100 years old. everyone is so busy paying attention to this and paying attention to that. they're not paying attention to the important stuff that's right in front of them! what's up with that? find out on february 9th. i'm not happy with the way that pg&e handled the wildfires. yeah. yeah. i totally, totally understand. we're adding a ton of sensors. as soon something comes in contact with the power line, it'll turn off so that there's not a risk that it's gonna fall to the ground and start a fire. okay. and i want you to be able to feel the improvements. we've been able to reduce wildfire risk from our equipment by over 90%. that's something i want to believe. it is time for the highs and lows of the week. our first high on this super bowl sunday goes to the philadelphia eagles. now, i'm not saying i'm pulling for them to win. this is an impartial show, after all. but even the most ardent of chiefs fans could not help but cheer after seeing what the eagles did for one of their biggest fans. his name is ryan quigley, and he was in new orleans on new year's during the bourbon street terror attack. ryan was badly injured. his best friend, tiger beck, was killed. ryan and tiger shared a love of the eagles, which is why the team recently invited ryan to tour their practice facility, or
