asphalt and that's what you're seeing spilled all over the freeway. i think this is going to take quite some time to get leaned up. only the right lane and the hov lane are getting by. let's give you a look at how to get around this. the smart route is loop 202 eastbound. i-10 is slow all the way back to the ministack. you're seeing the normal slow and go on the 10. and i-17 -- because this is you're seeing it back up to the durango curve or so. it could take some time for that to recover. and i-17 is super slow. we've had a couple crashes there. back here at the abc15 live desk, a weather alert. this is state route 87 and shea in the fountain hills area.

carlos arrogozo our photographer, you'll see the power lines. the crews -- see it dangling there. several of them dotting the landscape. that i moved those off the roadway. strong winds and lightning going right through the area. and iris hermosillo has been following this for us at this very moment. right now. a without power in the area. >> we saw a lot of lightning as storms moved through quickly. the bulk of the storm activity is moving northeast of the valley. and still racing to heber and cibecue. if you're in these areas, know that this batch of thunderstorms is moving your way and it's going to produce a lot of lightning and dangerous conditions in the area. a heads up over the higher terrain northeast of the valley. showers south of wickenburg. and we have a few spotty

we have a little bit of light rain from surprise and just to the northeast of there in cave creek just light spotty showers. there's a chance for rain here through the early morning. we have the thick clouds and that chance at 10%. the temperature down to 84 degrees. more storm chances this afternoon. i'll show you what that looks like in a few minutes. i'm justin pazera with a traffic alert for you. we're on i-17 northbound. it's slow go starting at the stack. and if you want to get on i-17 at thomas, you're not going to be able to do that. you can see the lane restrictions here. you can see dps blocking the right lanes. they are concentrating on the front suv leading the pack there. the driver of that vehicle is actually trying to position himself to jump another car when he was hit and killed.

on i-17 saw what happened and stopped to get out to try to give cpr to the victim. they are looking for a vehicle. it's a chevy pickup with a custom tailgate on it. they want to talk to that driver. they believe he's the one that hit that driver and killed him. as for i-17 you can expect the long delays. dps just getting on scene. they are searching the suv. if you have just a heads up. expect delays. we're live in phoenix. justin pazera, abc15. and back at the live desk. talk about a headache for parents. this is something that had all of us talking. two glendale schools closed immediately over concerns of the structural integrity of the buildings there. katie conner is live at one of the two glendale campuses shut down today.

worried about this. >> reporter: they're very worried. students can't go back in for about five weeks. and the reason is there are cracks in the foundation. you can see all around the school. landmark elementary is where we are live this morning. and challenger middle school, closed as of today. a study revealed structural deficiencies in the buildings this summer. but they didn't know how bad it was until school is canceled inle thursday and the district is trying to figure out a temporary solution which may be moving all the students to a different location. the district is holding three meetings for parents. caught on video, his daughter attacked on school grounds. now this father is taking matters into his own hands to make sure something gets done about it. >> so disturbing.

fairfax high school. how did all of this start? >> dan, danielle -- >> the dad tells us his daughter was getting attacked online. and that turned into a physical attack that happened on school grounds. now he wants answers from police and school officials. we have to warn you, the video you're about to see is tough to watch. [bleeps] whoa! >> in that video you can see his freshman daughter getting pushed, punched, shoved to the ground. and at one point having a hard time breathing. she was taken to the hospital and to our understanding she'll doing okay. and the father is planning a protest because he says the school did not do enough to stop this.

out. and he's going to be pressing charges against the students involved. and coming up you'll hear what else he's saying about this very, very disturbing incident as a father to have to see that video, guys. >> nick ciletti, keeping us updated on that developing story. phoenix police are looking for a suspect involved in a shooting at desert ridge marketplace. it started as a robbery attempt in the parking lot. >> when the buyer tried to rob the seller, the victim fired shots at him. the suspect returned fire, grabbed the merchandise and took off on a red motorcycle. he's still on the run this morning and might have a gunshot wound. and we have another crash on the valley freeways. state route 51 near the ministack. and we'll take a look at i-17 and those crashes too. the gas prices are on the rise. this morning we're taking action to find you the cheapest

we're coming up on 6:10 and that's a dump track. i-10, salt river bridge west of university. the dump truck lost its load. several restrictions in place. there are four lanes restricted because of this. there was another car involved in the crash. i don't have an update on the number of people injured in this. you can see the backup and this is a mess. and boy, i want to bring traffic expert mallory moore. >> it's the middle of rush hour and it's going to be a mess. it's going to take time to clean that up. loop 202 eastbound and that's not slowing just yet. the delays on the 10 start before the ministack and spilling to the i-17. head out feral you use this portion of the 10. and you'll have to use the smart route. so many lanes are blocked. the rest of the valley is slow

forecast. boy, what a view that is. and we say good morning to you. and get to news now. an update on a major consumer alert. wells fargo hit with a record fine for scamming customers. >> we did some digging. a report highlights four times the bank has been slapped with fines. wells fargo agreed to pay a billion dollars over issues with insurance loans, and in 2012 overcharging customers. and they were fined 16 years ago for wrongdoing in home loans, and in 2010, they paid millions for issues with debit card payments. don't believe everything you read online. starbucks is not opening in downtown phoenix. a lot of people thought this might be true after a story was

water slide and 500 types of coffee. the coffee giant releasing a statement saying they have no plans to open a store like that not in phoenix, not anywhere, really. happening today, jury selection begins in the murder retrial of a man accused of killing a 6-year-old boy in new york in 1979. they expect to prospective jurors. he's accused of kidnapping etan patz from his bus stop. right now parts of reno, nevada are blocked off after a small plane crashes into a parking lot. three people were killed. investigators say the plane reported some sort of trouble after takeoff and then went down. no flights were impacted there.

parking, really. a team from the ntsb will head to the scene to try to figure out what happened. the death toll continuing to climb in north korea because of severe flooding. the storms are triggered by a large typhoon. this is what we know. 133 people killed, 400 people reported missing. the united 25,000 homes destroyed. and 140,000 people are in need of desperate help. the government is trying to reopen roads, aid groups are releasing stockpiles of food, shelter, and health supplies. some of the images i saw were people with shovels trying to clear so trains could get through and help people. just an incredible sight.

from hawaii's kilauea volleyball. this is the first time it's been visible since may of last year. seismic activity was reported over the weekend. thousands of people head to hawaii every single year just to see the lava flow into the pacific ocean. >> i saw that in hawaii. and it's an impressive sight, that's for sure. we have a nice view over the valley. some clouds and a lightning valley. and now the sun is up and not a bad looking sunrise as we kick off monday morning. a change in the weather as we get a boost in the monsoon moisture. the moisture means storm chances. we have a lingering chance for rain this morning with a chance for more storms this afternoon. this moisture is increasing as we track an area of low pressure off to the west. it's going to boost the

before some drier air pushes in by the middle of the week. let me show you the latest future cast. we have a slight chance of a stray shower in the phoenix metro. once the atmosphere heats up. we see the storms fire up along the mogollon rim and southeast arizona and by this afternoon, the storms could come close to the phoenix metro and into the southeast valley this afternoon into the evening. we'll have to watch for gusty winds. and the dust threat no but not at zero. and we'll be watching for patchy blowing dust and storms with strong winds through the southeast valley as that's where the best potential will be. a stray shower could clip by the valley. and after that we dry out and clear out the storm chances. a 10% chance for showers this morning. and then a bit of a lull before more storm chances into the afternoon and the evening. especially between 4:00 and 6:00. that looks to be the best

valley. keep an eye on the sky and the mobile app handy. today a little bit more humid with the high only making it to 100 degrees. and check out the 7-day forecast. over the next few days, the temperatures only making it into the mid- to upper 90s each day. abc15 desert drive times -- >> take a look at air 15. a big crash on i-10 -- and i can tell you the tow truck is now on scene. they had to stop traffic for a moment to get it there. and this is i-10 eastbound near university. still just those left two lanes getting by. and this will be a headache for some time. take a look at the mess from what the truck was hauling. let's give you a look at the desert drive times. 23 minutes as you're traveling eastbound from the 17 to the 60. once you're past the salt river bridge it eases up.

option. and for drivers on i-10 before that out in the west valley. the delays are typical. the slowing starts near the minute stack or so. i-17 southbound is slow swell but also because of an earlier crash. east valley has been quiet all morning long. and i'm hearing of a new crash on the 101 in scottsdale. we'll take a look at that next. the bus lane classes are canceled at this glendale school. i'll explain coming up. and a mercury still in nevada could be bigger than originally thought.

the company's ceo announcing that the autopilot software they've been using will be updated in two weeks. the new software could have prevented a deadly crash in florida. the new system will rely on radar more than cameras. traditional cameras have a toucher time seeing when the lighting conditions are poor. a mercury spill at a school could be greater than originally thought. the epa fears some students may have contaminated their homes. it's unclear what caused the mercury link but high exposure can harm the brain, heart, and kidneys. the school will remain closed while the epa investigates. the winner of the powerball will be coming forward today. the winner of the $487 million

>> a deadly crash shutting down parts of a valley freeway. we have team coverage includes smart routes. what's going on? >> we know that one person is dead and state troopers, law enforcement officers on the hunt right now trying to find the driver who took off from the scene. abc15's justin pazera has been at the the victim was a good samaritan. >> reporter: it's such a sad story. that good samaritan is the victim in all of this. where i'm standing, traffic should be getting on northbound i-17. you can see they had lane restrictions and the cars being forced to take a frontage road. dps is concentrating the investigation. there was a stalled car on the ramp. and a good samaritan stopped to help them out. they were trying to position

were hit. dps telling us another driver saw what happened and they stopped to try to give cpr. and phoenix police were giving chest compressions to the 19 to 20-year-old man. but the driver took off. the driver that hit the good samaritan took off. everyone is on the lookout for this truck that is out somewhere. it has very detailed tailgate. so if you see it. call police. for more on how to get around this, let's send it over to mallory. >> use indian school to get on i-17. the backups on i-10 this morning in the eastbound direction -- all because of a crash near the i-17 split. it's very slow on i-17. on the 10, on state route 51.

let's give you a look at the crash that's causing the delays. it's a rollover truck that has lost its load. that's going to take time to clear out. the tow truck is on scene. and the left and hov lanes are the only lanes open. the smart route. let's look at 202. that's the best option. this is red mountain in the eastbound direction. the delays start well at the ministack. i-17 this is past the i-17 stack. loop 202 is your best bet this morning. the east valley has been quiet and seeing the typical delays on the 10 in the west valley. but in the east -- we're not adding much rain into the messy morning commute. there are showers in spots across the valley. most of us waking up to a quiet start. and i wanted to take you to the

few flareups. this area of rain moving to the northeast. and it could make for wet roads, especially if you take the 101 in north scottsdale. and we have another storm south of crown king moving to the northeast. and this is the area where we're seeing the most lightning and the strongest storms. cibecue seeing these strong storms moving in and producing a lot of lightning this morning. we'll talk more chances for rest of that day -- because we're not in the clear yet -- in just a few minutes. and now to shocking video touch to watch. a young teenage girl beaten at school. >> her father is taking action and of course wants to protect his child. nick ciletti is live. >> good morning. so this whole incident started last week. the father very, very concerned

about doing a protest because he says the school didn't do enough to stop it after his little girl was attacked and it happened right here on campus. let's get to the video. and we want to warn you, it's tough to watch. last week his daughter was being bullied online. and a friend notified her and she tried to talk to the fellow students and it did not go well. the students ended up attacking her. someone was filming this. and at one point she was struggling to breathe. >> i don't know how to explain as a father when you walk up and see your daughter laid out. and then to find out that she had been jumped. let alone the fact that she's only about 100 pounds. >> reporter: you really feel for him and of course his

loop 100. and it's pretty quiet. the focus for rain has been in the northeast valley. through the next few hours, a 10% chance for rain in the forecast through 8 a.m. as we could see some of these pop-up showers this morning. sitting at 84 degrees. and we'll warm to 90 degrees by 10:00. clear out the storm chances for a few hours. storms fire up along the rim again and in northeast. and by this afternoon and evening, they could move into the phoenix metro. i'll break down the storm chances and show you what hazards to look out for. >> all the hot spots have been in the central part of the valley. and i want to show you a crash in scottsdale. this is loop 101 northbound blocking the two right lanes and it could get worse. you'll see slowing in the northbound direction.

in iowa who are showing their support for a native american tribe. protesters blocked construction crews from getting to the sight where the pipeline is over a thousand miles long. it stretches across four states from north dakota to illinois. the justice department stopped construction in north dakota on friday. that's been the scene of a lot of protests. nativeamerican tribes say the pipeline could contaminate the water supply. a congressman traveled to the weekend to tribe. the zika virus is not going away any time soon but the money to fight the virus is quickly disappearing. the head of the cdc says if congress does not act, the consequences could be felt financially for decades, not to mention the victims a >> the virus. president obama will meet with top leaders to try and get the funding pushed through. we have a health alert for

a new study shows that most parents mess up when giving kids, medicine. 85% give too much or too little. scientists say there's a big variation in measurements and availabling and sometimes that can cause confusion. do you wonder where all the student fees go for the college courses. the university is sending less waste to the landfill and keeping it form of compost and that means fewer material at the dump. we have our new miss america. >> miss arkansas. best potential overall will be in the east valley. west valley, the chances are lower. this is the storm threat area, mostly across eastern and southeast arizona and we're looking to see the storms fire up southeast of the valley first by early afternoon. they could come close to the phoenix metro but by later in the afternoon, a few of them could move to chandler, mesa, sun lake. not to say we won't see a storm but the chances are a little bit lower of that happening today. any storms that develop will have the potential of strong winds and with that comes the dust threat. and the dust threat is not too high. we'll be keeping a close eye on the potential for patchy blowing dust southeast of the valley. heavy rain is possible, at least localized. and we'll go from 84 degrees now to a high of only 100 this afternoon. but much of the valley will end

wait until you see that 7-day? i've got lower temperatures in the next few days. this crash on i-10 this morning is blocking all of the right-hand lanes. the two left lanes, hov and the left lane still the only lanes that can get by. and there's the cleanup underway and it's going to take a lot of time. let's give you a look at where the delays begin. i-17 southbound starts around -- the 51 is jam packed back to glendale or so. the best option to get around some of the slowing, you'll maybe take side streets until you hit 202. the 10 is jammed before the i- 17. it's a messy commute on your freeways this morning. but there's a lot of other crashes throughout the valley and in the north part, the 101 is slowing in the eastbound
