minute. the hope is to try to get it open before we get into the thick of rush hour. and meantime. i want to get to some video. dps is telling us before midnight an audi sedan was traveling and got a flat tire and pulled off on the side of the road. the 22-year-old man got out to change the tire. and a 61-year-old man in a pickup truck came barreling down the freeway slamming into them. dps told us the driver stayed on scene but could be facing dui charges. three people were taken to the hospital with broken bones and are expected to be okay. and sadly, the driver was taken to the hospital and later passed away. i am working sources to try to get names here, especially for the suspect and to see what charges he could be facing.

when the 17 southbound reopens. >> the minute you have an update we'll stop what we're doing and come back to that. a 911 call turns very dangerous for police officers who walked right into an attack. they were attacked. and this is developing right now in maricopa. katie conner, the first reporter there, joins us live. explain what happened and how >> reporter: fortunately, none of the officers were injured. investigators are gathering evidence up and down the street. the suspect was shooting at police from his driveway right there. and you can see the front window is busted out from the shootout. here's what we know. police were originally responding to a domestic violence call around 8:45 last night. the suspect started shooting at them when they arrived with an ar-15 style gun.

justin pazera is live on pecos road where there's another push to stop this project. >> reporter: this time from native american tribes. they'll be running on pecos road. this is where the new 202 is at. and i have to show you some renderings from adot. and you can see it going through a part of south mountain which is one of the big problems for the native american tribes. they say that south mountain is sacred and they don't want the freeway going through the area. it's a 10-mile relay run, a peace march is what they are calling it. they'll be ending at desert vista high school in ahwatukee. this is an informational meeting and they are hoping to send a strong message but i have to point out the

traffic i-17 south. it's been shut down all morning long. you can see the troopers but the lanes are back open. and the delays will take some time to clear out. it all begins around camelback. and i'm recommending i-10 eastbound or the 51 because that's going to take a while for the delays to ease up. east valley has been very quiet and it still is. an eight-minute desert time. the rest of the valley. we're seeing the delays on the west valley starting to extend and the crash is blocking the hov lane. i'll give you a closer look in just a few minutes. this is that explosion i told you about in the bronx. that's a home. getting an update on the injuries here.

the driver stayed on scene but was arrested and is going to face charges for a dui and other charges. the driver of the other car did not make it. three other passengers were taken to the hospital where they remain. they have a number of broken bones but are expected to be okay. as soon as we get names, we'll pass that along to you guys. now to a second deadly crash at t 35th avenue and bell. it's back open right now. it was shut down all night. the driver tried to turn left and was hit by an on coming car. former director of the suicide crisis hotline revealing more than a third of veteran calls went unanswered by front line staffers.

people were injured after a home exploded in the bronx, new york. here are the brand new aerials. this is a second alarm fire response to a two story home. several dozen firefighters racing to the scene. and several crews got on the scene. seven people were injured, including four police officers, a firefighter, and a civilian. and this is now being investigated as a possible drug lab. that's what is meteorologist iris hermosillo -- keeping a close eye on conditions across the valley. some scattered clouds and all dry in the phoenix metro this morning. i am watching rain to the south moving through morana. you could get caught under showers on the drive down the i- 10. the showers moving in to

and we have more storms southeast of there moving up to benson. the reason it's going to be important to watch is because storms that develop down there have the potential of moving up to the valley. the showers will stay out of the valley this morning. and i did keep in a 10% chance for a stray shower this morning. most of us will enjoy a nice dry drive into work. a 20% chance for a few storms in the phoenix metro. especially after continuing through the evening commute. 73 now, a high of 91, and more breezes to talk about for today. just a couple of minutes ago. i gave you a look at the crash. you are still seeing a lot of delays before and after. so a 20-minute desert drive time from the 17 to the 51. slow and go pretty much the entire stretch.

apache junction is in the 60s too. a great deal feeling start to the day. we have more of the breezes this morning. between five and 15 miles per hour across the valley. and coming from the east, southeast. plan on the winds to continue to come in out of the east, southeast between five and 15 miles per hour with occasional gusts by this afternoon. not as breezy or windy as yesterday but still some breezes through the day. it's 73 now and a stray shower. and most of us will enjoy a nice dry drive to work. we've got a 20% chance for storms this afternoon. that puts us in the slight chance rain. not everyone will get rain but a few storms will be possible. and in southern arizona, tracking a few showers that could come close to the valley this morning. but a chance for thunderstorms

they could move into the valley by the afternoon to the evening. we'll talk about how long the rain chances stick around next. east valley drivers have been the lucky ones, we haven't had crashes or major traffic trouble. the 101 is starting to slow northbound. it doesn't ease up until closer to baseline. the rest of the freeways look pretty picture perfect. and as far as things are getting better. that's going to take you from the i-10 stack to the i-10 split. but the delays are improving. you could take i-10 eastbound right when you hit the stack or state route 51. we have a crash on the 51. this is southbound right at bethany home. everything is off on the right. and it's slower because folks are choosing the 51 over the 17 because of the delays and the crash. look out for extra delays there.
