underway in april. construction nats after more than five years in the planning.... car nats a plan to improve the intersection of pyramid and mccarran is finally taking shape. j/h all of the properties, all of the homes that needed to be taken down as part of this project are now down. the project demolition phase is substantially complete, and it's substantially complete about 3 weeks ahead of schedule and about three weeks. under budget. that budget... about 72 million dollars, primarily from federal funds. harrington says this was a slow process because residents of 67 homes had to be relocated... and the properties demolished before road work could begin. we've been able to recycle a lot of the materials some of the wood will become mulch... some of the driveways and foundations will be recycled. all that really remains moving forward here between now and

after the demolition here. he says a cell phone tower that once stood next to a church will also be relocated. while the construction - which is slated to begin in april is expected to cause minor delays - harrington says, in the end this will be a safer area for drivers. this is one of the busiest intersections in the truckee meadows. 60 thousand vehicles per day traverse this intersection. it's an extremely high crash location as well so this project will really go along way toward addressing that traffic issue as well as safety concerns. again that construction is expected to start in april. we will, of course, have the details as the become available here on kolo 8 news now... and kolo tv dot com. joe harrington says, they will also be posting regular updates to the r-t-c facebook page. another local golf course faces an uncertain future. the convention and visitor's authority says it wants out of wildcreek golf course. so, ?what's happened?

kolo 8 news now's ed pearce is here with some answers. ed, we've seen this before.... we have. several years ago the rscva owned and operated northgate in northwest reno as well as wildcreek. they shut down northgate, a move that raised the same sort of issues we're seeing once again. 00-:32 :32-:40 :40-1:23 1:23-1:35 it really comes down to this. the mission of the rscva is to bring visitors to town, not to provide recreation for local residents. and time was, a golf course was a valuable asset in that mission. that value has been in decline for sometime and the authority says its been losing $150 to $200 thousand dollars operating wildcreek in recent years. so, the board meeting today decided it was time to get out of the golf business. the fate of the course is a matter of concern not only to local golfers, but people living nearby. aranda:" we don't want it to be any kind of development beside the green belt that it is and the community that's built around

residents of a northwest reno neighborhood had exactly the same concerns several years ago, when the rscva decided it wanted out of northgate golf course. eventually neighboring property owners absorbed an assessment to keep it from development and the city took it over, but in the meantime the course itself returned to nature, the fairways and greens were quickly replaced with cheatgrass, tumble mustard and white top. today, it sits unchanged awaiting review of a federal grant to turn it into a city park and nature trails. the board decided to look for a new owner rather than sell it for development and initially, at least, it's looking in the county's direction. what the response will be is uncertain at this moment. lucey:"the county's focus is to maintain quality of life and parks and recreation for our citizens. is golf specifically that business? it's hard to say. i'm just one commissioner, just one vote on the commission." the rscva has set no timetable for a decision and says in the meantime wildcreek will be maintained and operated. so, there's no

"the notion of being considered for a seat on the highest court in the land, is beyond humbling, and i am incredibly grateful to have been mentioned." ### senator dean heller released a statement on sandoval's withdraw. the republican says quote... consider any nominee to the supreme court until after the election. in less than 30 minutes, the g-o-p presidential candidates will take the debate stage in houston. it's their last face-off, before super tuesday-- when republican voters in 11 states, will have their say. the democratic candidates.... are preparing for their next contest this weekend. bazi kanani reports. in the last debate before super tuesday, frontrunner donald trump could take fire from both sides. senators marco rubio and ted cruz... both questioning trump's conservative credentials at a fox news forum last night. cruz: "if donald wins the general election, who the heck knows what he would do as president?" rubio: "we are not going to allow the conservative movement to be defined by a nominee who isn't a conservative." a new poll shows trump 16 points ahead of marco rubio in his own home state of florida. that could push rubio to get tougher on trump... despite trump's threat this week to hit back harder. klein: "every attempt to take on trump has failed spectacularly. and the problem that rubio and cruz have is that they are each other's enemies

thousand dollar reward for information about a home invasion near reno high school. police say two men went into a home on foster drive around five last night.. and attacked a man inside. the victim was taken to the hospital and is recovering from non- life threatening injuries. officers tell us the attackers could be driving an older white two-door car... with a black stripe down the driver's side door. and they might be connected to other local burglaries. "just due to circumstances that will come out later, we do believe they are armed and dangerous so we ask the community that if you do see this vehicle, contact the authorities. don't approach it and let's keep our community safe. " the attackers are described as hispanic or light skinned black men. one is six feet tall, with a thin build. the other is described as five foot eight inches tall, with a heavy build and a tattoo on one of his forearms. if you have any information-- call reno

in sparks, police are looking for the people involved in the reported theft of an s-u-v. investigators say it happened yesterday afternoon, around 4-30-- at the intersection of greg street and spice island drive after a minor crash. a woman told police that her vehicle was hit by a dark green, early 19-90's chevy or g-m-c s- u-v. she says, when she went to check out the damage, a man jumped into the drivers seat of her s-u-v ... demanded money, then drove away. the other driver also took off. police say the man is described as white with a bald or shaved head, in his 30's he has a tattoo on the left side of his head, near his ear -- and full sleeves of tattoos on his arms. the woman in the s-u-v, that hit the victim-- is white and in her 30's, with blonde hair. the stolen vehicle is described as a grey 2000 g-m-c yukon, with a u-n-r sticker in the rear window. if you know anything, call secret witness at

they're offering a 1- thousand dollar reward for information. ### we're learning new details about jason dalton's behavior leading up to that deadly rampage in michigan. through their lawyer... jason dalton's wife and parents are speaking out for the first time--expressing not only their shock--but sympathy to the victims--the six people killed--and two others injured.. dalton is now in jail--facing six counts of murder--and his motive remains a mystery--even to his family. causing heavy damage from the gulf coast to the northeast. virginia is under a state of emergency after tornadoes and thunderstorms left at least four people dead. the hardest hit was waverly where the twister cut a 5-mile path of destruction through the town. two men and a toddler died when their mobile home was hit by the tornado. police say their bodies were found about 300 yards from the home. "as wind gusts continue to affect the area, citizens should be aware of loose limbs, downed power lines, other wind-related hazards. so use caution if you're traveling as debris and wires may still obstruct the roadway." in lancaster pennsylvania, high winds flattened homes and barns.

deaths or injuries. the national weather service had confirmed at least 27 tornadoes from the gulf coast, texas, the carolinas and virginia as of thursday morning an inmate firefighter is in critical condition in southern california. she was part of a crew battling a brush fire near malibu. the fire burned about 20 acres, and forced the evacuation of nearby homes. it started around 3 o'clock this morning, near the pacific coast highway. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. ### apple is fighting back against the federal government. th e tech giant taking a stand today against a request they call "dangerous." and, an effort is underway to make it easier for nations to share cybersecurity. for news while you're on the go, listen to our newscast partner, news-talk 780, koh.

trying to break down barriers to sharing cyber information. republican will hurd says an agreement among nations is hindering the ability of businesses and governments to keep their information secure. kolo 8 news now washington correspondent peter zampa spoke with hurd about efforts to fix the problem. congressman will hurd says a 2013 agreement put harmful controls on the sharing of cyber technology. he says the agreement needs to be thrown out. what was originally intended for the purpose of arms control, the wassenaar arrangement expanded to the cyber space. last may, the united states decided to implement these export controls on cyber technologies, which, hurd says, received nearly unanimous opposition from technology and cybersecurity industries. the controls make it so someone that wants to share a piece of technology or code has to go through an application process to acquire a license to share. the thinking is that this could prevent code or

falling into the wrong hands. hurd, a computer science major in college, says cyber sharing requires immediacy - if one company or government doesn't receive necessary code in a timely manner, it could have disastrous consequences. rep will hurd: "like my old company. we would try to break into a company, and we would tell them how we would do it, and share the tactics, techniques, and procedures that we would use to get in. sharing that information under this agreement would've been a violation of the wassenaar agreement, which is absolutely crazy." hurd tells us he wants president obama to meet back in wassenaar in the netherlands with all 41 participating countries, to completely rework the agreement. reporting in washington, i'm peter zampa. reporting in washington, i'm peter zampa. apple has asked a federal magistrate judge, to reverse her order, requiring the company to help the f-b-i hack a locked i-phone used by one of the san bernardino attackers. in the filing, apple accused the government of seeking "dangerous power", through the courts, and trampling on its constitutional rights. it's apple's first official response, since the order was issued last week. lawyers for the tech

were forced to build the software... criminals, terrorists, and hackers would go to great lengths to steal it. today f-b-i director james comey defended the demand, to a congressional committee.
