clashes in chicago. more than 40 people are arrested as protesters battle riot police near the nato summit. remembering robin gibb of the bee gees. who helped define the disco era with some of the '70s most memorable songs. and ring of fire. millions watch a rare solar spectacle as the moon nearly blocks out the sun. this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, may 21, 2012. and good morning, everybody, so good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. it promises to be another rough day in chicago. the nato summit will wrap up with a vote on plans to give afghanistan command of all combat missions by 20 13.

meanwhile, thousands of protesters are expected to take to the streets again today. yesterday demonstrators marched through downtown in one of the city's largest protests in years. dozens were arrested and several officers injured. susan mcginnis is in washington with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it was quite a weekend in chicago. while world leaders are inside the convention center mapping out a plan for peace in afghanistan, protests outside turned violent. protesters charged police and police fought back. four officers were injured in the clashes and more than 40 demonstrators were arrested. >> if that's what they wanted, to get arrested, then so be it, they can say, i'm proud, i beat up a cop or assaulted a cop. >> reporter: more demonstrations are expected today as nato officials wrap up their meeting in chicago. at the top of nato's agenda during these meetings is the war in afghanistan. president obama's goal, to keep member countries from pulling

troops out before the 2014 deadline. >> we will stand together united in our determination to complete this mission. >> reporter: but france plans to do just that. french president francois hollande says his country will complete its withdrawal by the end of this year. and nato now plans to wrap up combat missions early and transition to a support role in 2013. but general john allen, head of u.s. and nato forces in afghanistan, warned that troops may still be needed to fight. >> the taliban have been unambiguous. they intend to take advantage of the removal of the surge forces. >> reporter: today the heads of the nato countries will decide how they will support afghanistan after the troops withdrawal in 2014. and, perhaps, just as important -- >> in these difficult economic times, we can work together and pool our resources. >> reporter: who will pay for the mission? which is expected to cost $4 billion a year.

and the taliban issued a statement, urging nations to follow france's lead and pull troops out this year. terrell? >> susan mcginnis in washington for us, thank you. the head of the united nations nuclear watch dog agency arrived in iran this morning. he'll press iranian leaders to let the u.n. resume inspection of their nuclear program. it comes ahead of talks with the u.s. and five other nations in baghdad on wednesday. iran is facing severe sanctions on its oil exports over its nuclear program. mt. everest has claimed three more lives. officials say this morning climbers were coming down from the summit saturday when a windstorm suddenly swept through the mountain. one of the dead is the 61-year-old german doctor. the other at mountaineer from korea and a third from nepal. two more climbers are still missing this morning. a deadly earthquake rocked several towns in italy. it registered 6.0 and struck early sunday morning about 22 miles north of bologna, a region known for making parmesan cheese. at least four people were killed and dozens injured.

several historic churches and buildings were destroyed. many residents are staying in tents set up by relief workers. official say it's the worst quake to hit the country. since the 1300s. a former rutgers university student quibed in a web cam spying case will be convicted today. dharun ravi was convicted in march. his roommate, tyler clementi, committed suicide days after ravi spied on him kissing another man. ravi faces ten years in prison and could be deported back to india where he was born. the music world is mourning the loss of robin gibb, a member of the bee gees. a group that helped define the disco era. he died after a long battle of cancer. he was 62. theresa garcia has more on this legendary pop star. ♪ you may look the other way >> reporter: it was the sound of the disco era. ♪ staying alive staying alive >> reporter: robin gibb, together with his brothers, ere the bee gees.

one of the most successful pop groups of all time. raised in england in australia, the gibb brothers started cranking out the hits in the 1960s. ♪ i'm going back ♪ to massachusetts >> reporter: but it was in the '70s when their popularity was starting to slump that they found their groove in disco. ♪ well you can tell by the way i use my walk i'm a woman's man ♪ >> reporter: using their distinctive falsetto, they did the soundtrack for "saturday night fever" and became a worldwide sensation. ♪ dancing yeah >> reporter: the album was number one for six months, selling 40 million copies. it was one of the best selling records of the 1970s. >> we didn't really foresee it, certainly how big it was going to be. >> reporter: as the disco era passed, the backlash began. the bee gees became a punch line and struggled to remake their image. >> you can't be wonderful to everybody one minute and terrible to everybody the next. and we were pretty well

devastated by it. ♪ don't tell me not to stand >> reporter: robin and his brothers worked on solo careers as the bee gees fell out of favor. and they worked behind the scenes writing songs for stars. ♪ we've got nothing to be guilty of" including barbara streisand, dionne warwick and dolly parson. ♪ islands in the stream >> reporter: the '90s brought a series of new hits and 1997 the the respect they craved, a spot in the rock and roll hall of fame. ♪ >> reporter: success brought seven grammy awards, album sales of over 200 million. rob's twin morris died of a twisted intestine in 2003. robin was in and out of the hospital in recent years. he came down with pneumonia in april, forcing him to miss the london premiere of his classical "titanic."

i few days later he slipped into a coma. the setback came as robin and barry started rehearsing together again. they had been talking about a bee gees reunion saying, we still have a lot of music in us. theresa garcia, cbs news. and a deadly prison riot in mississippi broke out yesterday afternoon at a privately run facility in adams county which mainly holds illegal immigrants. one guard was killed, five other correctional officers were injured, three inmates were hurt. officials say at one point two dozen hostages were being held. s.w.a.t. teams were brought in and the riot was finally brought under control late sunday night. coming up on the morning news, a change in relationship status for facebook's founder. plus, millions come out to witness a rare solar eclipse that leaves behind a golden ring in the sky. this is the "cbs morning news." it was like a red rash...

a dramatic show in the clear skies of the utah desert sunday as the moon passed in front of the sun for a not quite total ring of fire eclipse. visible only at an air strip from eastern asia to the western u.s. the lunar passage covered about 96% of the sun's disk, creating the brief but brilliant ring. pretty cool. now to something a bit more down to earth. politics, that is. campaign fund-raising going into may, president obama's campaign has more than $115 million in cash. while the mitt romney campaign has just $9.2 million after a gruelling primary season but it's different for the independent super pac supporting each candidate. priorities, usa action backing mr. obama has $4.7 million, while restoring our future for romney has $8.2 million. one guy who has plenty of cash is mark zuckerberg and this weekend he changed his facebook status to married.

he capped the week in which facebook became a public company and he became an official billionaire by marrying priscilla chan, his girlfriend of nearly ten years, at zuckerberg's home in palo alto. we're getting an explanation for the glitches on nasdaq. an historic piece of babe ruth memorabilia hits a record. i'm so excited to see ashley morrison, reunited, feels so good, i can't even talk this morning. good to see you. good morning. >> good to see you, too. a mixed day for overseas market. toe yoke's nikkei added 0.25% while hong kong's hang seng lost a fraction. nasdaq's ceo says the stock engs change is embarrassed by its handling of facebook's initial stock offering on friday. facebook was supposed to start trading at 11 a.m. but trading didn't begin for 32 minutes later. there's no indication the delay impacted the performance of the stock of facebook shares rose 23

cents on the first day in the market. facebook's ipo didn't do much to help the markets overall. on friday the dow was down 73 points while the nasdaq sank 34. a chinese corporation is buying one of the largest movie theater chains in the u.s. the $2.6 billion deal to acquire amc is china's largest takeover of a u.s. company in history. the deal will allow amc to spend more on upgrading its theaters and expand overseas. it's not expected to lead to a change in amc's management or work force. meanwhile, yahoo is selling half its stake in online chinese retailer al baba, giving yahoo $7 million. and a record price was paid for a jersey once worn by babe ruth. an anonymous bidder bought the yankees jersey for more than $4.4 million. that's the most anyone has paid for a piece of sports memorabilia.

the heat went on to win it 101-93, tying the eastern conference series at 2-2. in los angeles, the clippers led well into the fourth with but the spurs wouldn't give up their winning ways. danny green with a three-point jumper to tie it 92-92. tony parker hit a runner in the lane as spurs won their 18th straight game, 102-99. pushing their playoff record to 8-0 and swept the western semifinal series. before the clippers and spurs took to the court at staple center, kings and coyotes were on the ice. kings were out to sweep the nhl hampionship. coyotes had other ideas. shane doan scored twice on a power play in the first period and again in the second. mike smith made 36 saves as phoenix won it 2-0. to baseball now. this game also in l.a. cardinals at dodgers. st. louis had a 5-3 lead in the seventh inning but rookie scott

the twister killed 161 people and caused nearly $3 billion in damage. but as ben tracy reports, the people of joplin are rebuilding, even as they mourn the loss. ♪ this little light of mine >> reporter: near the foundation of where their church once stood, the members of peace lutheran came together this morning. ♪ i'm going to let it shine >> reporter: how do you feel a year later? >> oh, proud of everybody. >> reporter: the f-5 tornado that leveled one-third of joplin last year, also destroyed their church. they have not yet rebuilt it, but over on 26th street, the steeple of st. paul's methodist is again reaching for the same sky that last year tore it down. all over joplin, new homes are being built. 446 of the 553 businesses destroyed have reopened. the new playground in the city's

main park is a big draw. yet some things cannot be replaced. >> i just soak up the sun and soak up the joy that my son gave me. >> reporter: michelle comes to this field to feel close to her son lance. this is where he died. days after the tornado, she was frantically searching for her 16-year-old who was out driving her car when the tornado hit. >> his backpack was still inside of it. >> reporter: we were with her when the police came to the door. what happened? >> i have gotten a visit from the joplin police department, notifying me that my son has been identified. >> reporter: he's dead? >> yes, correct. it is in some way a comfort to at least know he's in a better place and that we don't have to wonder if he's out there needing us. >> reporter: when do you think of him the most? >> in the mornings. always in the morning. >> reporter: when you get up?

>> when i get up. you do think, you know, what a wonderful soul has been lost and what a great young man. and you think about the future that he could have had. >> reporter: ben tracy, cbs news, joplin, missouri. al megrahi, the bomber is being buried today. he died sunday of cancer at age 60, three years after being released from prison believing he had months to live. he was convicted in 2001 of planting the bomb that brought down the pan am jet over lockerbie, scotland, killing all on the plane, mostly american, and 11 on the ground. chinese human rights activist chen guangcheng is settling into his new home at new york university. chen, blind with an injured foot, arrived in new york after he boarded a u.s. flight in beijing. he was granted a fellowship to study law at nyu, which includes an on-campus apartment.
