and good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. good to have you with us. i'm brook silva-braga in for anne-marie green. here in new york secretary of state mike pompeo and a top north korean diplomat plan to hold what's described as dau ll of meetings. they're trying to salvage the summit between president trump and kim jong-un, focusing on the north's nuclear weapons program where podesta is here in new york outside the date of today's meeting. laura, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. kim yong chol and secretary of state mike pompeo will be meeting in this apartment building behind me today. what i that discuss is whether the summit between north korea and the u.s. in singapore is back on. secretary of state mike pompeo broke bread with a u.n. official for the first time in 18 years.

pompeo and kim yong chol, a former military intelligence chief, had a steak dinner in new york city last night. they're trying to lay the groundwork for a nuclear summit between president trump and north korean leader kim jong-un. the trump administration has said complete and verifiable denuclearization is the summit's goal. pompeo said north korea will have to do things they've never done before. >> the focus is going to be on denuclearization of the peninsula. as long as that's the discussion, we're going to continue to shoot for june 12th and expect to do that. but the north korean leader has pushed back in recent weeks arguing a nuclear arsenal is tied to his and his country's safety. while pompeo and his north korean counterpart are preparing to meet in this north korean apartment building,reparations e also happening on the other side of the globe.

>> reporter: in a north korean village, a u.n. ambassador is working out the agenda. and in singapore they're working on protocol, security, and logistics. a reminder president trump canceled the meeting last week when north korea called vice president mike pence a political dummy and warned of nuclear conflict. president trump plans to meet with victims' families killed in a school shooting in santa fe. a meeting h take place inside the hangar. the president will also attend several political fund-raisers throughout the state. a federal judge gave lawyers for the president and his personal attorney michael cohen until june 15th to finish looking at files taken from cohen by the fbi. they're reviewing more than 3 1/2 million files seized from a raid in april, looking for ones which should be withheld from investigator because of

attorney/client privilege. meanwhile stormy daniels' attorney michael avenatti withdrew his request to have a legal role in the negotiations. he claims the files include him. he said he would have to attend his publicity and attacks on cohen if he became part of the case. more heavy rain is forecast for western north carolina today. flood warnings and watches are posted for the area. the remnants of subtropical storm alberto have been drenching the region. two people were killed when a mudslide caused a house to collapse yesterday. the state of emergency was declared earlier in the day. heavy rains and another landslide compromised a dam there, but residents who were forced to evacuate east of asheville have been allowed to return to their homes. >> in hawaii, lava from the kilauea volcano is moving so fast, residents of two coastal towns were ordered to evacuate amid fears their escape route would be cut off. the lava that's now making its way to the surface is now the

hottes and most fluid to date. carter evans has more. >> reporter: the flow of lava is accelerating, in some places moving the length of a football field every ten minutes. take a look at this fountain of lava. it's probably 100 feet high there, and it's right on the edge of someone's backyard. marianne farrell got out when volcanic rocks started flying. that's basically raining lava. >> yeah. it's too close for lava. >> reporter: lava has overtaken the road leaving one escape route. the lava is much bigger now. there's a tremendous amount of magma bursting from the earth and there doesn't seem to be any signs of it slowing down. there's been an arrest in the murder of a tennessee sheriff's deputy. erika castro-miles has been charged in yesterday's fatal shooting of sergeant daniel baker. meanwhile a manhunt is under way

for another suspect. jericka duncan has details on those details. >> reporter: authorities want to arrest this man, 31-year-old steven wiggins. police are callinging him armed and very dangerous. he's suspected of killing daniel baker, a deputy with the sheriff's office in nashville, tennessee. when baker didn't check in, police went to the area looking for him and found him dead inside his patrol car. baker served with the marine reserve, joining the military in 2004, according to his facebook page. in 2008 he was hired as a patrol deputy with the sheriff's department. >> we just ask for your help. >> reporter: sheriff jeff bledsoe says sheriff baker stood out. >> our heart shattered with this. this is one of our best deputies. he's one of the guys that puts it own the line every day to keep our community safe.

>> reporter: baker was recognized for his brave actions numerous times. in 2013 he helped rescue a woman trapped under water after her pickup overturned in a creek, and this past march bhiel off duty and working a second job he chased off a drunken gunman who fired a handgun into the air. baker detained the man until the police arrived. harvey weinstein's attorney says his client will fight rape and other charges. the case involves alleged attacks on two women in new york. it's the first case of a slew of sexual misconduct allegations against weinstein. his attorney says the charges are not support and his client strongly denies them. back to president trump who tweeted about the roseanne barr flap, kind of. mr. trump didn't criticize barr's racist tweet but said the

here's another look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. this video of a little boy helping an elderly woman walk up steps has become an internet sensation and why not. that's 8-year-old maurice adams jr. he saw this georgia woman with her walker struggling to make it up the steps. he ran up to her, put his arm around her, and together as you can see he helped her climb up the steps, celebrated with a hug.

unbee kno unbeknownst to adams and his mother, taping the good deed. he looked happy to have done it. the person said he wants to give the boy $100 for helping the woman. i have a feeling he'll succeed. the american cancer society has issued new colon cancer guideline. it's now recommended to get a colon cancer screening at the age of 45 rather than 50. meg oliver has the story. >> reporter: at 47 years old, sandy krykostas was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to his liver. >> when you have a wife and two young children and they tell you to get your life in order, that's a scary point. >> doctors gave him two months to live. >> i wasn't supposed to have colon cancer. nobody in my family has colon cancer. >> reporter: with no family history and symptoms that started weeks before, cases are on the rise. those under 50 has shot up 51% since 1994 while at the same time rates steadily declined in

our top story this morning, secretary of state mike mom pay owe and a senior north korean official had a dinner at light in new york city. the president canceled the summit last week, but left open the possibility that it could still take place. and the president will travel to texas today where he'll meet with the victims' families from this month's high school shooting there. mr. trump will reportedly meet the families today inside a hangar at the houston airport.

he'll also attend several political fund-raisers while he's in the state. well, it's a plot twist straight out of hollywood. a man called to talk about the murder of a journalist and then suddenly a surprise witness appear. elizabeth palmer has the story. >> reporter: here's the moment arkady babchenko returned from the dead. i would like to apologize for what you've been through, he told journalists at a press conference. ukrainian officials then explained that his murder had been an elaborate hoax, which even fooled his wife who believed he had been shot dead. the implication that babchenko had been murdered by agents of the russian state. it's true babchenko was an outspoken critic of the kremlin. in fact, he left moscow for

ukraine last year saying he feared for his life and got a job as a tv anchor in kiev. ukraine's security chief claimed that two months ago a man with russian connections hired a hit man to kill babchenko for $30,000, but the hit man didn't do the job. instead he helped police stage babchenko's murder. ukrainians say they arrested the man who ordered the killing. at babchenko's tv station, his colleagues were overjoyed to hear he was alive. but there is also a lot of anger, especially on social media. by collaborating with the authorities essentially to make fake news, babchenko has undermined serious journalism
