potential flood situation. >> mudslide slides down a hill crashing into another one. the storm continues to pound the bay area, high def doppler tracking the widespread rain and wind. >> a live look outside shows you the wet and gloomy conditions this afternoon, this thing is not over yet. good afternoon i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. we begin with breaking news in marin county. this video from the highway patrol hoeing a levee breach along highway 37. check out all that water rushing blow neat the train tracks for northern pacific railroad and the water is flowing from the nevado creek potential flooding on highway 7. don ford arrived on scene, don, what can you tell us? >> reporter: early this morning about 8:00 the fire department realized water was receding and wondering why. a levee here which supporting the railroad track has been

breached. water is flowing through into the water catch base in. it looks more like a cow pasture than a base in. right now is battalion chief, chief, what can you tell us about this situation. >> the situation now, don, as you can see is we have an uncontrolled amount of water that is draining into two flood brace ins. >> now i heard you are going to launch a boat to try to help out. >> we do, a large pump in this flood base in. the water came up so quickly we don't have access via car or foot. in coordination we have one of the boats in the water with crews that are under way right now. >> reporter: they are going to start the pump. >> and try to lower the water levels. >> reporter: tremendous amounts of water. we're adjacent to highway 37. is highway 37 in jeopardy? >> it's not in jeopardy right

now. what we are forecasting is that over the next 5, 6, 7 hours a real possibility highway 37 in the eastbound direction could be closed. >> reporter: could be impacted. that is the latest, back to you in the studio. >> don, thank you. now to the mudslide that destroyed homes. a woman was inside a home that slid from saw alito boulevard crashing into another home on crescent boulevard. we have team coverage, we begin with anne makevec who is live at the scene, anne. >> reporter: yeah, they are dealing with a lot of challenges right now in this neighborhood. you can see the mess here behind me, i am going to give you closer look at this house came down from a block away, up the hill taking another house with it. the hillside right now is unstable and at this point they have no idea when this neighborhood will be safe. at around 3:00 this morning this house slid off of its

foundation. several hundred feet up the hill. there was a woman on the second floor who came down with it, susan gordon ended up buried in debris but somehow had minor injuries after firefighters pulled her out. she is already out of the hospital. rescue workers spent the morning making sure no one else was stuck inside. >> yeah, i'm worried about my neighbor. >> we heard from one neighbor. >> it sounded like a tornado. then i thought it was an earthquake. >> reporter: lisa got out of bed to see what had hatched. >> then i smelled tree and i went and i heard the creek, i'm like that is weird, i thought the door was flown open, it was a tree busted through the kitchen win. >> reporter: we got a chance to get closer to this huge pile that was once somebody's home. can you see signs of life here demonstration the mess there. is a bmw that got crushed by the debris, a shirt still on its hanger a pile of clothes and a picture in a frame. in all, two houses are

destroyed around many others damaged from trees, mud and water that continues to flow downhill. >> there is an awful lot of unstable soil and the buildings. there is a significant amount of damage assessment to be done. until we can do that we can't let people back in. >> reporter: lisa's stairs are somewhere in this mess. >> they had to go down through their living room window down on to my deck to get out. >> reporter: and can you see we have engineers out behind me, they have been dealing with a gas leak, a possible water main break and power outages. and the real concern is what's next. because the rain of course is not over yet. live in sausalito, anne makevec, cal cal. >> anne, thank you. here is a look at the mess from

copper 5. >> highway 101 open but dozen of homes around the slide are too dangerous to be inside and evacuated. continuing our team coverage live at an evacuation center at saw sasaulito hall. >> reporter: here earlier was the woman who was in the middle of that mess. you heard there was one woman who sort of went with the slide this morning and the one injury involved in this mess, she was here earlier today. i saw her briefly, she is pretty banged up, a big wealth on her face, kind of scratched up. as you might expect she is not interested in talking to the media quite yet. but, obviously just an incredible story to come from her having been in the middle of that slide. as we were mentioning a dozen

folk right now who have been forced out of their homes staying here at city hall. >> unbelievable to be so close to it was incredible. so i think we are lucky to be alive and lucky our neighbor, you know, she is okay. >> reporter: zachary garza could feel the earth and his neighbor's home give way this morning . the sound was like two freight trains crashing together. >> reporter: he is gathered at city hall. >> we're expecting probably 15 to 18 clients, you know, couples, single people, had one family come in with a small baby. >> reporter: and as for the ' vocation on the hill no word on how long that will last. >> red cross isn't helping us out. and we're still trying to find a friend of ours to let us stay with her, try to get everything together and regroup and assess what we are

going to do moving forward. back in 1982 another mudslide in the same neighborhood dumped deadly, two homes plunge from a hillside during a powerful storm, one person was killed and about 600 people were forced from their homes. other storm damage now in san francisco. this massive treetop he willed over near the financial district. take a look at the roots, bigger than the person standing next to it fell right on top of a truck which you can barely see between the branches. fortunate leah gray car near by spared by an inch or so. as you take a look. let's get right to meteorologist mary lee who is tracking the rain and the winds still hitting the bay area right now. >> michelle and kenny, we have seen impressive rainfall amounts this weather this storm. day two of this atmospheric river event. you can still see the rain out there, looking at moderate to

heavy rainfall as well as down through livermore, fremont, keeps pouring right now for you across the peninsula. morgan hill. let's talk about flood warning still in event. you are barn sonoma county area at 1:30 due you to all of this rain. talking roads, streams flooded. southeastern marin county until 2:45 this afternoon because of all of this rain and the north bay really getting hit the hardest with about 3 to 5 inches and 6 to 8 inches for the north bay mountains. a flood advisory, urban and small stream flood advisory until 12:30 this afternoon. we'll update you on the russian and napa rivers as well as what you can expect taking you through the next few days coming up. >> thank you. days of rain hammering the bay area pushed south bay river to the limits.

kiet do has more storm watch coverage from san jose. >> reporter: round 2 of the atmospheric river dodging another bullet. the rain and wind came down in sheets overnight quickly turning highway 9 into a hot mess. multiple fallen trees shutdown a 6-mile stretch of highway 9 from san bourne road to skyline boulevard. with the ground already saturated from wednesday's rain, another inch fell overnight in san jose. crews stationed at the alma avenue bridge watched as the river rose 8.5 feet in just 7 hours. with the flood from 2017 still fresh in their minds, the city took no chances and pushed out a cell phone alert at 4:30 a.m. urging hundreds of residents living along the river to evacuate. san jose police fanned out to knock on doors. >> you never know what is going to happen here. >> reporter: by 5:00 a.m. it appeared the river levels peaked at 16 feet. by 7:30 a.m. it dropped a foot lower.

9:30 and 10:30. neighbors charlene mellow was bombarded with warnings throughout the night. >> phones periodically dur the night, police at my door around 5:20 or so. so i didn't get a lot of street. i appreciated the warning. >> reporter: back in 2017 massive amounts of debris at coyote creek clogged up the flow causing it to spill over. the city and water district came under fire for not warning residents early enough. this time around, kelly woodward who lives more than a mile away from the evacuation area got multiple phone alerts. >> do you think the departments learned its lessons since 2017. >> the city and water district spent the last two years clearing debris and beefed up communication systems to anyone living in the path of forecasted floods. from now on they will errr on

the side of caution. >> we are not going to slack off, this is the new normal. >> reporter: kiet do, kpix5. also in the south bay, the santa clara county fire department says this fallen tree felled down power lines forces roads closes, with respect for the road to remain closed. meanwhile check out this erie site, dark gray skies for the morning commute. and you can hear how powerful the wind is from inside that car. the problems on the road continue in the north bay, several roads shutdown in novato 0 road. you can see the road was looking like a river this morning. police say garden court, lauren avenue and oak forest at eagle gap roader still closed but a shelter in place order has been lifted. the big problem now is mopping up. neighbors say the overnight flooding brought down garbage bins and sent trash all over

the street and into some homes. no reported injuries. a couple north bay rivers are expected to reach flood stable today. these shots are from the russian river. turning with degree and carrying a tree under the bridge. the river is over just 34 feet high right now and officials say it will crest at 38 feet tomorrow. minor flooding is expected. and check out the napa river as well. swelling to the bottom of this bridge. officials say it's over 23 feet right now at napa. it will crest at 25 feet which could mean some minor flood here as well. right now thousands of people in the bay area are without power. in the north bay some 9500 customers are affected. as well as more than 6000 along the peninsula. in san francisco more than 3000 are without power and in the east and south bay combined nearly 13,000 are in the dark. a number of bay area schools

now to the big and national headlines of the day. >> congress will vote on a bill to fund the government and prevent another shutdown, this includes nearly $1. 4 billion for fencing along the border. that's more than some democrats wanted to give but still less than the $5.7 billion that the president has demanded. meanwhile, the senate just voted to confirm william barr as attorney general. barr won by a unanimous vote. the veteran lawyer will oversee special counsel's russia investigation. it has been one year since the massacre of 14 students and 3 staff members at marjory stoneman douglas high school, today students served breakfast to first responder toss thank them for their service. let's check in with mary with another look at the forecast. we are not done just yet with the rain and we're still

tracking the winds as wealth. here is high def doppler, you can see locations dealing with heavy rain. so you can see just moved across vallejo, venetia, sales force tower camera, can you see the clouds in the sky. temperatures are running in the upper 40s to low to mid-50s at this hour. let's check the winds. they were very strong and gusty earlier this morning but you can see 15 miles per hour winds sustained in redwood city. 20 at half moon bay, downtown san francisco looking at 17 at santa fa he will. and we will continue to see the winds relax as we go through the day. the russian river at guerneville cresting at least 4 feet above flood stage and that means moderate flooding expected late tonight into

tomorrow morning. also the napa river near napa and the latest update it will likely not crest above flood stage, no flooding expected at the napa river at napa there. so here is the satellite and radar view, tropical moisture coming in, we have just seen just wave after wave of rain and as we go through the afternoon we are looking at scattered showers, here we are at 5:00 p.m. and then a cold front rolls in for tonight and that will bring a line of showers and even some heavy downpours by tonight. this is tomorrow morning. and we're still dealing with that wet weather. this is 6:00 a.m. for tomorrow. and then as we go through friday in the afternoon as well. we have that chance to see showers that continues for saturday. and also for sunday and we will see snow levels dropping down to 3000 feet, possibly 2500 feet by the end of the weekend. forecast wind gusts you can see the winds easing as we go through the afternoon, so the worse of it with the winds, that's over.

sunset at 5:47, our sunrise at 6:59. daytime highed to right around where we should be for this time of year because of this tropical moisture, you can see the temperatures warmer than what we have in the upper 50s to low 60s there. 60 in san francisco as well as for oakland, fremont, mountain view. 61 in san jose and 59 for napa. here is that seven day forecast, so we are still looking at scattered showers, and heavy downpour as we head through the rest of the afternoon and into tonight. looking at showers for friday into the weekend, finally catching a break, by monday for presidents day, partly sunny skies and mostly sunny. tuesday with rain chances for the middle part of next week and we'll be right back.
