quite some time. >> we watches as--watched as a huge wave came up other this sand. this wave came up probably 10 feet in the air, i kid you not. >> we're hoping that everybody there stays safe. team 12 has crews all along the florida coast. we will be bringing you the media channels. >> really scary to be told that you need to be prepared to wake your children up out of bed in the middle of the night because of a fire. >> and now our big story on 12 news at 6:00. that man right there, we interviewed him after a fire at his neighbor's home. well, now, he is in custody for arson. >> chandler police announced

morning. >> team 12 william pitts joins us live and this man is linked to more than half a dozen arsons around the city. >> reporter: that's right. the last time we talked to him was after a fire at his neighbor's house. he lives just next door. he told us he thought the arsonist was targeting him because he had been on tv. now chandler police say he was the one who set that fire. tom leper cried for the cameras talking about a fire at his neighbor's house. >> it was pretty scary. sorry. >> reporter: he had out of the house. >> it is really scary to be told that you need to be prepared to wake your children up out of bed in the middle of the night bus of a fire. >> reporter: it was everything a good story needed. one problem, the p.d. say his set that fire. investigators say he set at least half of the fires they're investigating in his neighborhood. he is the one who called 12 news to let us know about a community meeting with the police.

arsonist. he was in the second row feats from the cops. even then they thought he might be their guy. >> at the very least, he is an investigative lead on the other fires. >> reporter: he set fire to another neighbor's house. the court papers show he confessed to the fire and says he used a is a vining filled with gasoline -- syringe filled with gasoline. channel leer p.d. says arsonists usually want the attention, but even they have never seen this before. >> they do tend to want they want to traditionally try to barner the attention to let everybody know that not necessarily that they did it, but that the fire did occur. >> we're going to find you. if it is not one of our community members catching you and calling it in, it is going to be the fire investigators and the police department, they're going to find you. >> apparently he told police he had an irresistible urge to set fires. he even spent time at a treatment center for fire

news. thank you. now to decision 2016. there are just 32 days to go until the november election an the most senior member of the board of supervisors says he is asking the voters this year to really educate themselves about the race for sheriff. the republican leader is stepping forward to explain why he believes sheriff joe arpaio should not be re-elected. team 12's joe dana has this exclusive. >> reporter: he is a life long >> and fiscal conservative. >> reporter: and as a supervisor serving his fifth term, he has had a front row seat to sheriff joe arpaio's career for nearly two decades. >> i couldn't in good conscious vote for sheriff joe arpaio. >> reporter: why? the list is long. he agrees that he ignored court order force the purpose of raising money for his political campaign. >> i do think it was a conscious decision to ignore

on it. >> reporter: the violations by the sheriff have forced the county to pay out more than $50 and counting. >> and -- $50 million and counting. >> and to help him raise money when we the taxpayers are footing the bill. >> reporter: he also accused him of breaking a sacred pact between taxpayers and development promising to use money for one purpose and spend spending it another way. the most addressous -- agregioupl they requested money to investigate a backlog of sex crime cases, many involving children. >> and without any real hesitation at all, we provided several -- as i recall, it was closer to a million dollars. >> reporter: the sheriff's office never spent the money ton sex crimes unit. >> in mind sight, that money was -- in hindsight, that money was diverted to another area. >> reporter: instead he opened a snuggling unit that year.

if bait and switch is the wrong term. >> reporter: so why is he speaking out now? he also says in the past he worried his criticism could make the county more liable to lawsuits. now he's asking the voters, many who he says like himself are inclined to trust those wearing a badge, to take a hard look at this election. >> we were all raised, and i hope kids today, my kids are being raised to really give the benefit of the doubt to the police. so i think it is conservatives out there to really think that somebody is capable of violating that trust. i think there's been an extreme level of deceit and dishonesty. >> that was joe dana reporting. sheriff joe arpaio declined our request for an interview. a spokesperson for his campaign, though, issued a written statement to us, reading npart, the claims are startling and purely political, especially in light of the fact that he overwhelmingly voted in

democratic just once in 68 and years. two polls out today give her a real shot, but there are still a lot of voters out there having a hard time making up their minds. >> we're way up in arizona from what i hear. >> reporter: that was donald trump boasting about his arizona polls tuesday in prescott valley. he wasn't way up and the latest polls thursday show he's now in a virtual tie with democrat hillary clinton. 538.com's new average of all arizona polls by just eight tenths of a percentage point. the republican nominee is supported by 45.6% to clinton's 44.8%. >> they both have serious issues that make me question if i can vote for them. >> reporter: one of many voters we spoke to having a hard time making up their minds. >> now here he is and i have to deal with it. >> now that it is getting down to the wire, my decision has become a little more clear.

at hurricane matthew -- as hurricane matthews pummels the sunshine state a powerful storm gaining strength as it moves closer to land. it is about 9:16:00 p.m., and it is moving in at a category four storm. again, this is coming live out of florida. already matthew being blamed for the deaths of 200 people after hitting the island nation of haiti earlier this week. more than a million people have been ordered to evacuate. today florida's governor urged ho safety. president obama has already declared a state of emergency and thousands of national guard troops are on stand by. most of florida has been shut down. flights in and out of the state have been canceled and popular attractions like disney world and sea world have closed. and right now there's a popular trending hash tag that says pray for florida. i suppose that's all that anyone of us can do at this point because it is coming. >> they need it. it looks so impressive when you

as the eye wall there moved over the tip there of the western bahamas. so now it is starting to pull away from the islands. as far as the center, i'm talking about the eye wall, which is where we typically see some of the winds there on the northeastern side of that. so right now it is moving in a northwesterly direction, but the rain bands have already been pounding the east coast there of florida from areas north of melbourne stretching all the way down to fort lauderdale, d bit of that moving into the miami area. you can see the red showing all of the hurricane warnings that extend not just in florida, but all the way up the coastline but into portions of north carolina. so it still a category four hurricane. winds at 130 miles per hour. this is a four here as it nears the coastline by tomorrow and then again still on that same path veering to the north and east there skimming the coast there off charleston and then once again coming right back

and then it may just kind of hang out in the area just looping around. the reason because of that is a ridge of high pressure that right now is off the northeast coast and it is driving those winds keeping that storm and kind of blocking it from moving up further. so we could be talking about this well into the middle of next week. 90, that was our high at phoenix sky harbor, coming in two degrees below the average. we're going to warm up as our weather pattern changes. we're going to see high rolling up as well and possibly a chance of rain. we're going to see a little disturbance. you can see how that moisture, most of it, is staying over northern mexico, portions of new mexico, but we're going to get a little bit of that in arizona, pri barely up above -- primarily up above the rim. tomorrow night after about 10:00, we'll start with a 20% chance of rain. on saturday morning we're up to a 30% chance of rain. then the rain chance also stick

saturday evening at a 20% chance. no rain out there tonight. clear skies. 59 to 67 on your overnight lows. 91 to 96 tomorrow. we're going to warm up a little bit ahead of this system, but we'll see sunshine with the clouds mainly moving in for saturday. now, right now sunday looks pretty dry. it looks like this moisture will move out of here to the east. overall a really nice day there for the susan g. komen race which we'll be covering live sunday morning we're dry as temperatures get a little bit above the average. thank you. well, right now it is time for today's social sound off question. the arizona state fair kicks off tomorrow, and we wanted to know how it compares to other state fairs around the country. >> well, according to the web site, our state fair ranks number two. >> wow. >> yeah. in the whole country. the study looked at several factors, for example, like attendance rates, the cost of admission and how long each of the fair runs.
