live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning, everyone. welcome to "today". 7:00 on the west coast, 10:00 on the east coast. the irony of the coverage, the people most dramatically impacted of the storm probably can't watch, probably don't have power this morning. >> high winds, storm surge the real concern this morning. let's get to the very latest on this storm. overnight matthew did weaken ly powerful category 3 hurricane with 120 mile an hour sustained winds. the good news for florida this morning the path shifted slightly east. the bands, though, are still lashing the coast at this hour. >> here's the number we talked about, nearly 600,000 people in that state already without power this morning. that number probably will grow throughout the day. >> here's a disturbing reminder of how powerful and destructive this storm has already been.

has now skyrocketed to at least 572 people. >> we have correspondents spread out all across the storm zone. al is going to be tracking the storm, we'll get to him in a moment. let's begin with ron mott being hit hard in daytona beach. ron, good morning to you. how are you doing? >> reporter: matt and savannah, good morning to you. obviously, the calm before the storm is over. we're now officially in the thick of hurricane matthew. we have to be mindful as you mighag our hotel, things are falling off. this hotel and buildings surrounding it. and it's remarkable, but there are people out there driving on the streets. don't know their stories or why they are out there, but they are taking a significant risk by going out in this weather. now, we can tell you that the sea is our main concern here. the wind, obviously, is going to do some damage, but it's the storm surge. i don't know how well you can see it, high tide, the next high

hours from now, and it's based on how the sea is performing right now, guys, it is clear we're going to get some flooding. all this water is going to rush into the streets and these water inlets, which leads inland to the intercoastal waterway, where there's a lot of property and probably a lot of people hunkered down. we have lost power at our hotel here. we're now on back-up generator and this is when you're going to see the misery index spike considerably, because now people the battery level in their cell phones to communicate with their loved ones outside this area and those batteries are going to drain fairly quickly if they don't have any sort of back-up power sources. so the next three or four hours is very critical for daytona beach. one of the things you mentioned is fortunately the eye is not going to pass over land here. it's going to remain out over sea. the question is, just how far out it is.

>> a lot of the creature comforts you take advantage of or for granted are going out the window. ron, thank you. >> lester holt is about 90 miles to the south of where ron is in daytona in melbourne this morning. good morning, how was it there? >> reporter: well, the worst of it was probably about 5:00 this morning when we saw the power started flickering and finally it went off. many parts of this area, of course, without power, some do have it. we ventured out to take a area of where we were staying and saw sparks and arcs of light indicative of transformers exloading, so scary scene before dawn. the wind has died down as we're on the backside of the storm now, but the storm surge continues to be an issue. over my shoulder is the indian river that leads out to the ocean and we have watched that now, especially in the lower areas, begin to overtop on to the roadway. there are homes just up the way

flooding, but flooding, obviously, a major concern here right now. in terms of damage, we haven't seen any significant damage. again, our limited point of view, too dangerous to get out and we're staying close to here, but not any significant damage. signs down, certainly some trees down in areas, but no homes or buildings that we can see have suffered damage. in fact, one of the crews went out to the beach side itself and didn't see any signs of serious damage there, as well. likely because as we've been farther to the east than first anticipated, so not the full force of this hurricane, but certainly a pretty wicked punch here as it continues up from melbourne, up to where we heard that report in north towards the carolinas. back to you in new york, savannah? >> no doubt, relief from where you are lester, thank you. >> shortly after matthew hit southern florida, tens of thousands of people began to lose power. the outages have grown as the winds have picked up over the

beach, florida. miguel, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, matt, good morning. that torrent of rain has finally stopped hitting us, but the wind has been brutal. a short time ago we saw lightning bolts in the air, transformers explode. take a look at the palm trees, they are still swaying in the wind and also some damage up on rooftops. this storm is still packing quite a powerful punch, and there is more to come. overnight, hurricane matthew slammed into florida's coast with fury. powerful storm bringing heavy rain and high winds. gusts so strong, sheriff's deputies had to get themselves out of harm's way. in palm beach, live power lines were knocked to the ground sending sparks flying into the street. across the region, transformers exploding, illuminating the night sky. governor rick scott deploying

did not heed warnings to evacuate. >> i've activated 3,500 national guards members. this is over a half -- over 50% of the available troops. this is the most i've ever had to activate. >> reporter: during the brunt of this storm, it wasn't just the winds that were violent but the rain came from different directions. if there was one piece of good news, most people were at home and hunkered down. thousands took shelter at nearby schools. hundreds of pets housed with their owners. price gouging. while drivers rushed to fill their tanks before leaving town. for many, the roads have been the only way out. all flights at miami international canceled. in orlando, disney world is shut down again today. still, despite all of the warnings, some decided to stay behind. >> i've got food, i've got water.

>> reporter: residents preparing for the worst stocked up on supplies. grocery store shelves throughout the state, cleaned out. as matthew approached, the weather channel delivered this blunt warning to those who refused to leave. >> this is not hype. this is not hyperbole and i am not kidding. do not assume you can survive if you choose to stay. >> reporter: with power still out in this region, the he winds aren't going to help the situation. utility crews from all across the area are working their way here. the streets for the most part are still deserted. luckily, many heeding the e vkuation orders. matt and savannah, back to you guys. >> thanks very much. >> that brings us to al in our makeshift hurricane center in the orange room. what do you have your eye on? >> we're watching right now the eye and you can see right here the eye of this system is just about 40 miles, i'd say, 41

and the other interesting thing is this is where we're really starting to worry about the storm surge. you can see all the heavy rain, heavier precipitation is wrapping around and going to start piling up in between daytona and jacksonville, and that's where the storm surge we're most worried about. right now still a category 3 storm 30 miles east/southeast of daytona, north/northwest forward movement at 14 miles per hour. clears daytona later this afternoon and then jacksonville savannah, but late tonight, early tomorrow morning, it hugs the coast. right now we still don't see it actually making landfall. sunday morning early it's off the north carolina coast, then it starts to curve around and comes back by wednesday as a tropical storm toward the bahamas. so it's not unheard of, but it's rare that this happens. here's what we're looking at as far as the impacts. seven to 11-foot storm surge,

savannah, and on up towards the south carolina, north carolina border. up to 15 inches of rain from florida into the carolinas, hurricane force winds along the coast. we expect this to move away from the coast by sunday, but again, the big problem, the storm surge. melbourne, up to savannah, seven to 11 feet on top of high tide, as you heard ron mott talking about, charleston, four to six feet, and further into myrtle beach, on towards wilmington, only about two to four feet. also flash flood watches now are in effect from florida, north all the way to virginia. all this rain, 7.7 million people at risk, guys, so again, big thing we're worried about, though, is the storm surge. that's where most deaths, injuries, and damage actually occur during the storm surge. we'll look at that in depth coming up later. >> al, thank you so much. little earlier we spoke with florida's governor rick scott, the guy who had been sounding

and here's what he told us. >> good morning. if you're in the jacksonville area, you're going to see a lot of storm surge. you still have time to evacuate. there is no reason to be taking risks. we've been working to get every one to evacuate if you can. we got a lot of people evacuate. they are still seeing hurricane-force winds. i'm trying to make sure we don't lose one life. the most important thing to me is we do not lose one life. >> governor, i listened to your warnings yesterday. you didn't mince words at all. you said this storm will kill you. if you've been told to get out, get out. i know it is hard at night because people who hunker down don't tend to advertise that they're hunkering down. do you have any idea how many people heeded your warnings and how many people didn't? >> well, we have 20,000 people in shelters right now, but a lot of people went inland. a lot of people went to the west coast. our hotels are pretty much filled out. we did a good job. highways stayed open. we had a little bit of congestion. we have fuel throughout the state. we have a few stations without fuel for a period of time, but people had the opportunity to

i think most people did. we're going to see some -- coming daylight, we'll see how much damage we've got. about 400,000 homes without power right now. >> we just heard al talking about the danger of the storm surge which people sometimes forget is really the heart of what can be dangerous during a storm like this. is that your number one concern at this hour? >> absolutely. if you look at the las hurricane we had which was just a category 1, we had up to ten foot of storm surge in the panhandle. there is a lady south of tallahassee, she didn't evacuate. we finally got out of her house. if she wouldn't have gotten out, she would have passed away. it is worse. we'll have up to 12 feet of storm surge and waves on top of that. jacksonville has a lot of low-lying areas. if you have a chance to evacuate, you need to get out now. if your house is prone to

evacuation zone, you've got to get out. save your life. that's what i say about everybody's life. >> governor, i know you spoke to the president yesterday, he declared the coastal areas a federal disaster area. what does that mean for you? what resources will it open up for you? >> the first thing we asked for is food, water, tarps. yesterday we asked for some pumping support, things like that, generators. i've also been talking to the head of the army corp of engineers in the southeast, general turner. we need debris removal crews. we need power support. i've been talking to you are o utilities. but people are working well together right now. we'll assess our damage. but right now my biggest concern is save every life. save every life. if you've got a family, take care of yourself. >> florida governor rick scott, it is an incredibly busy morning for you so we're so happy to have your time, sir. thank you and good luck today. >> thank you.

>> they've got a lot on their plate this morning, nice of the governor to take some time. >> absolutely. we'll turn to politics now. peter alexander is at the white house with more of the response effort. good morning. >> good morning to you. both the candidates are preparing for the second event this weekend, the so-called sequel in st. louis, town hall style event. they both sent messages of prayer and said they are looking out for the people throughout the southeast coast right now. the trump campgn the campaign described it to me, but because the campaign picked the crowd, the questions, obviously, were softballs. trump insists otherwise, but sure looked like a dress rehearsal. there was even a two-minute timer clock on the floor by his feet. hillary clinton, for her part, has no public events scheduled

she's been preparing with senior advisers. a poor performance from trump and there are already rumblings that congressional republicans may have to distance themselves from him, start campaigning as a check on hillary clinton. one note that's interesting in the midst of this powerful storm, how matthew could potentially impact voting. the clinton campaign requested florida's voter registration deadline be extended past next tuesday, but florida's republican governor rick scott, who's the chairman of the super pac supporting donald trump everybody that's had a lot of time to register. still, south carolina extended its deadline because of the hurricane and evacuations. matt, savannah, one more note, the president right now being briefed in the oval office by the chief of fema, craig fugate and jeh johnson, as well, he's going to be delivering remarks about the storm just a short time from now. >> peter, we know you'll be watching that, thank you. got some new developments in

the ntsb announced the train sped up to 21 miles per hour shortly before it crashed into the terminal. that is twice the speed limit. then went airborne, the engineer has told investigators he has no memory of the incident. one woman was killed, more than 100 others were injured in that crash. breaking news overnight out of minnesota. two people were killed in a helicopter crash near the tw cities. witnesses reported seeing the helicopter's blades stop turning just before it went down, and, of course, an investigation is now under way. >> all right. obviously, been a busy morning for mr. roker. he has more of his forecast. >> that's right, we're looking at the rest of the country and hurricane matthew, of course, the big story. sunshine up in northern new

we're back at 7:30 on a friday morning, 7th of october 2016. and these are the conditions in daytona beach as matthew, the most powerful hurricane to hit florida in a decade, is raking the florida coas gusts of up to 150 miles per hour have been reported. we'll have the latest on the storm and its path in a moment. >> some other stories we want to get to, even storm-related stories. donald trump and hillary clinton's campaigns have rushed to move staff and volunteers out of harm's way, closing offices and cancelling events. clinton is off the trail today prepaing for sunday's debate.

a practice session for the showdown. a december interest rate hike is more likely following this morning's jobs report. the government reported employers added 156,000 jobs last month. the unemployment rate ticked up slightly to 5%. and the jonbenet ramsay case is making new headlines, burke ramsey, her brother, is suing a forensic pathologist for claiming burke killed his 6-year-old sister. the complaint alleges dr. werner spitz said burke bludgeoned jonbenet to death in 1996. burke is seeking $150 million in damages. ron mott is in daytona beach. he's been up against it all morning. ron, still not looking good there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. we're starting to see property

i want to show you down here, this is part of our hotel here. you can see a hole in the part of the wall of the structure that comes out, would not be surprised once the wind gets in there, the rest is going to go down by the end of this storm. going to have you pan over here to the left, this is the real concern for us at daytona beach now for the next two-plus hours. this is the ocean, obviously, it is roiling at this point at some point, that water is going to start flowing into the community, atlantic avenue. there isn't much of an elevation rise from the sea to that street, so when high tide hits near 12:45 eastern time, i think it will go from really bad to really awful really quickly, especially for those folks living along the intercoastal waterway and if they are there

water they think is where it should be right now. it can come up very quickly and cause very serious damage. obviously, the surf is -- the surge, i should say, is a main concern in these hurricanes. the most likely culprit for people. sadly, we have heard of our first confirmed fatality in florida several hours south of us, a woman in her late 50s apparently succumbing to some sort of cardiac event. and n, people when this eye passes, don't just assume that the worst of the storm is over. we are expecting hurricane-force winds, tropical storm force winds, going into the evening and we hope people will go ahead and hunker down where they are. savannah, matt, back to you. >> all right, tense hours for sure, ron, thank you. >> we want to go up the coast to jacksonville where schools and all but essential services are shut down for the storm. nbc's gabe gutierrez is there.

storm, a lot of the concerns we were hearing were really talking about the city of jacksonville. >> reporter: yeah, that's exactly right, matt, the mayor of jacksonville ordered 450,000 people to evacuate. we thaerd from officials this morning and all those evacuations have gone well for the most part, but some people chose not to heed the warnings. right now i can show you the conditions. they have deteriorated very quickly in the last hour or two. this is where matthew is heading next and what we are seeing rieg now is some torrential rain. up and where we expect this to go over the next few hours, this is going to get worse. not as bad here as what we saw in ron mott's live report, but we expect it to intensify here into the afternoon. authorities now expecting winds here up to 80 miles an hour or so. thankfully, they've revised that down a little bit this morning because they were expecting up to 12 feet of storm surge in jacksonville. now they say about nine. still very serious, however, when this was a category 4

it's in florida that hadn't seen a storm like that since 1898. thankfully now the storm has weakened just a bit, but still very serious situation here. authorities are warning people to hunker down and to not leave their homes if they haven't left already. again, the situation is deteriorating here, matt and savannah, and we expect the wind and rain to strengthen into the afternoon and then to continue until about midnight. guys, back to you. >> gabe gutierrez, thanks for we appreciate it. >> let's go over to al, as matt and gabe was saying, jacksonville is a concern right now. >> that's right. the storm surge is basically ahead of the storm. you'll get these winds pushing all that water up against the shoreline, and it's got nowhere to go, so it literally is the surge of water from the ocean that comes in. so hurricane matthew, 11 feet above high tide, that high tide over the next couple of hours, give you kind of a perspective,

to nine feet, so potentially this could be very devastating. as you can see right now, here's the eye of the storm. jacksonville currently is about -- let's measure it out for you right here. here's the eye of the storm, jacksonville is about 108 miles, okay, so they've got a ways to go, moving north, northwest about 14, so you can figure out a few hours to go before the real meat of the storm. 30 miles east/southwest of florida, moving north/northwest at about 14 miles per hour. these are the winds, areas right now, daytona beach 71, cape canaveral, vero beach, areas of pink and white are the strongest winds. you can see they are up against daytona beach and jacksonville by later this afternoon. we continue during the day, into the night, and into tomorrow,

peter alexander is on the white house lawn with more on that. peter, good morning, what did the president have to say? >> reporter: good morning to you. the public comments from the president coming just as he wrapped up his daily briefing alongside the administrator of fema. they can't afford to be complacent, even though last night the storm didn't hit the florida coastline, suggesting people north of jacksonville and the georgia area now have to be on high alert, the president having called the governors of all the states in that region overnight declaring states of emergency in georgia after already having done so in florida. cueing up the tape, the president finishing these remarks a matter of moments ago, what he said, storm surge is one of the biggest concerns. if we can right now, we want to

moments ago in the oval office. >> obviously, everybody has been tracking the course of hurricane matthew, and i just received an update from our fema director, craig fugate, as well as the rest of our national security team, and i just wanted to make a couple of key points. first, what we're seeing now is matthew having moved above south florida and some of the largest population centers, working its way north, and the big concern that people are having right now is the effect it could have in areas like jacksonville, on through georgia. and we've seen some significant damage in portions of south

just hurricane force winds, but storm surge. many of you will remember hurricane sandy, where initially people thought this doesn't look as bad as we thought and then suddenly you get massive storm surge and a lot of people were severely affected. and so i just want to emphasize to everybody that this is still a really dangerous hurricane, that the potential for storm surge, flooding, loss of life, and severe property damage continues to exist, and people continue to need to follow the instructions of their local officials over the course of the next 24, 48, 72 hours. those of you who live in

there's been a lot of emphasis on florida, but this is going to keep moving north through florida and south carolina, there are large population centers there that could be vulnerable, so pay attention to what your local officials are telling you. if they tell you to evacuate, you need to get out of there and move to higher ground, because storm surge can move very quickly and people can think that they are out of the woods and then suddenly get hit and not be in a position in which they t so, pay attention to local officials. in the meantime, i've been in contact with the governors of all four of the potentially affected states. i want to thank them all for their leadership. there's been strong cooperation between federal and state and local officials. fema has worked diligently to preposition resources, assets,

the hurricane moves north, what craig and his team will be doing is moving those resources and assets further north so that any place that happens to get hit badly will be in a position to immediately come in and help. but i really want to emphasize the governors have been on top of this, state and local officials have been on top of this. they are the ones who are tracking most closely what is community, your particular area. you need to pay attention to them, do what they say, do not be a hold out here, because we can always replace property, but we can't replace lives. i want to thank craig and his whole team, as well as department of homeland security, my own national security team, for really staying on top of this. we're going to monitor this throughout the weekend.

affected. you know, it's -- even if the damage in south florida wasn't as bad as it could be, there are people who have been affected and for them, they are going to need help. last point i'd like to make is we're still tracking what happened in areas like haiti that were hit more directly. haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world. it battered by a lot of natural disasters to compound what is already great poverty there. we know that hundreds of people have lost their lives and that there's been severe property damage and they are going to need help rebuilding, so i would ask all americans to go to the american red cross and other philanthropic agencies to make

the storm surge. it's going to bring flooding to florida, georgia and cheryl king schblth. >> this is unfolding live time and this is in hundreds of thousands and officials released the death toll and it's risen to 572 people in that country alone. >> we have complete coverage beginning with ron that's in daytona beach, florida. ron, how you doing there? >> reporter: hey there. i ask for your forgiveness because things are starting to fly through the air and it's our best interest to avoid the objects. let me push in here and you can see that part of the hotel has pushed back in here. you can see that's on the back side of the hotel. that's all gone and two of the rooms have been breeched and

the fifth floor has fallen. now, most important is this out here. this is the sea. the atlantic ocean. we just saw one very large break just about the the people of the sea wall leer. the issue is flooding and the surge is between 7 and 11 feet in the area. high tide is on the way and it's 9:45 out there on the west coast when we're going get the highest level of water. there's not much after an elevation and then we do expect the water to push through there, but more important than that, there are a lot of water in lets that goo in land to the inner coastal water and there are a lot of people that live along the water way and if there are folks there, they should brace for the water coming into the homes and try to get to whatever

little warning. the next hours are going to be crucial here and the eye of the storm remain off of land we hope it stays out 50 or 60 miles away and then topping a hundred miles an hour. back up to you. >> okay. ron in daytona thanks a lot. >> daytona getting hit hard. today greg is in melbourne, for damage and looking around. what does it look like there? >> reporter: well, you mentioned power outages a moment ago. 30 minutes ago there were 640,000 homes without pow o er and that's number has jumped to 715,000 homes without power and expecting that to climb as well.

dodged a bullet here. no severe damages and a few power outages but nothing like what we're seeing north of us. none the less people all over the sunshine state prepare for the worst. >> over night monster madness slamming into florida. rain, crashing winds and exploding transformers and people praying for the best. many waking up without power this morning and here in me stayed open. one of the old holds is the fire and grill. todd is the owner and two-year-old son in his arms. most others heeding the warnings. >> evacuate. evacuate. >> a million and a half under evacuation and bumper bumper as they escape the coast. >> this maybe the difference in

it's racing to the carolinas and south carolina under a state of emergency. >> we do want people if they're holding out to go ahead and realize that it's time to move. >> reporter: in the last five minutes we learn that charleston, south carolina is a particular concern to officials. this is a look on crane creek and we're keeping an eye on that see fg that creek starts to spill into the roadway, that's area. that's not started to happen. that creek spills into the inner coastal water ways. the chief concerns in the parts is that wall of water we're expecting high tide two hours for now. a lot of folks waiting to see anxiously if flooding is a major part of the story. >> thank you. >> let's go over to al, and you

>> yeah, we got the latest from the national hurricane center. this is latest. right now it's a category 3 storm and 35 miles east of daytona beach. winds are holding steady and 120 miles an hour. the forward motion has slowed up a little bit north-northwest at 12 miles per hour, and here is where we're seeing a little bit of a change in the path itself. by friday 8:00 at night it's along so but look what happens now. instead of paralleling the coast, we now look like we could possibly have a very close land fall right around saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. we could be looking at land fall and that's going to be something that would be very devastating to the area. this would be -- this region right here between savannah and myrtle beach the storm surge is

the geography is working against those folks because as the system makes the way up and the winds get pushed this way, the strongest are in the northeast and that's bad news for charleston if this holds. then it does a loop and becomes a tropical storm and makes a v line for the bahamas, so we're going to have to wait and see what happens. this is what we're seeing as the affects. it's seven to 11 foot storm surge and 15 inches of rain from florida to carolinas and then the hurricane force winds along the coast and going to be a real mess.

the president speaking from the oval office after af wrapping up a briefing with the fema administrator. that's the home of homeland security and jay johnson. the top concern is remaining the storm surge and specifically they spoke about the people that have the time to evacuate if they should and they insist that they follow that message and the message was largely directed to those people that live along the florida coast and jacksonville and north end of georgia. here is part of the president's remarks just moments ago. >> this is still a really dangerous hurricane that the potential for storm surge, flooding, loss of life continues to exist. the people continue to need to follow the instructions of their local officials. >> reporter: so the simple warning from the president that the people in the region can though the be complacent at this time.

welcome back to "today's take." autumn has arrived. it means it is time for some of the best veggies of the season. if you're looking for some new side dishes, we have some ideas your kids will i love that you take the vegetable and by doing what you do, bring out its natural nuttiness and sweetness. i think people are going to be really surprised. >> yeah. we're doing some really interesting vegetable side dishes today. chefs around the world are taking vegetables to a new level. we'll show you how to do that in the home super easy. start with brussels. >> i love them. my kids love them. >> brussels can have a bad rap. >> because they boil them and

>> exactly. depending on the size, you can cut them in half. that way the flat side gets nice and crispy when it caramelizes. i'm just going to toss these with a little bit of olive oil. add some salt and pepper. i like to be really generous. we'll stick these in the oven at 400 degrees on high heat to bring out all of the natural sugars. while those are roasting, we're going to make the topping which is p it sounds fancy but it is actually really easy. we are taking pure pomegranate juice, put a little bit of maple in it and we'll cook it down until it is nice and syrupy. thank you so much. it will boil down and get really thick and sweet. then we have this. >> drizzle on top. >> it is kind of like a glaze. i like to do a nice little drizzle. these are great for kids. they almost taste like candy because they're really sweet.
