long-time aide to former president bill clinton, doug band, discussing how work for the foundation could be used to extract large speaking fees and other paid work for the former president. even referring to the operation as bill clinton, inc. also included, the time hillary clinton considered attending a foundation gathering in morocco after the king of that country, who pledged $12 million to the foundation, personally requested it. close aide huma abedeen noting, she created this mess and she today, hillary clinton will make her first joint appearance with michelle obama in north carolina. as for trump, he's taking another swipe at clinton and a another former republican rival who's still refusing to endorse him. >> she has less energy than jeb bush. i mean it. >> reporter: during trump's detour to d.c. to promote his new hotel, the candidate detoured from his campaign message. >> congratulations, newt, on last night.

mcmullin, who's running neck and neck with trump. >> there's only two names on the ballot that have a chance to be president of the united states of america. >> reporter: mcmullin firing back, tweeting, a vote for trump is a vote for religious bigotry and expansion of government. with days ticking down, tensions remain high, as well as real fears about violence on election day. this is a new tweet from former congressman joe walsh, who wrote a warning of sorts, sa trump loses, i'm grabbing my musket, you in? walsh later insisted he would only be protesting after the election. still, 51% of likely voters in a new poll say they have real fears about potential violence on election day. matt and savannah? >> some schools that are polling places are actually being closed because of those concerns. peter, thank you. >> let us bring in steve kornacki and nicole wallace. good morning to both of you. michelle obama and hillary

trump's campaign manager, said the clintons have this great advantage. they can bring out all these surrogates like her husband, the president, the first lady, the vice president. if you've got it, flaunt it. we're going to be seeing a lot of this in the next few weeks. >> yeah, and listen, for a while it was a volume business. she just had so many more. now in the wake of the newt gingrich/megyn kelly fight, it's not just quantity, it's quality. there's a case to be made that trump surrogates are doing him harm with the very kinds of voters, suburban moms that we've election, that he needs to win over and close well with in the final days. >> so if you're the trump campaign, how do you counter? >> there isn't a counter. you have to get your candidate on message. you have to get him to stop congratulating newt gingrich for locker room talk at best, misogyny at worst, by calling megyn kelly a woman fascinated with sex. and you have to prosecute a case against hillary clinton. today's front pages around the country have stories problematic for both campaigns. >> let's talk about that, steve. we talked at the beginning about how the polls are all over the place.

clinton campaign this morning. the campaign manager says donald trump says he can win and he's right. they know the polls are tyingening. how do you account for it? do you think this drip, drip, drip of these wikileaks revelations are having an effect? >> yeah, the polls are all over the place. what i always try to do when you see that is average them together. that's the closest thing to a compass you can find. looks like a six-point clinton lead. one thing the clinton campaign is worried about is not just the tightenith potential complacency. it's a clinton supporter seeing the 14-point lead and saying this thing is in the bag and don't show up. when you have wikileaks in the news, when you have the clinton foundation back in the news this morning with big stories, i think one of the things there, republicans who have been sort of -- it's been a long time for them to come around. they may come around now, seeing stories negative for the clintons. >> we're going to ask you to do double duty this morning and head to your board.

races. >> sure. so the race for 270. if you're donald trump, you have to make two things happen. first, every state that's in gray, toss-up state, you got to run the table. you got to win every single one of these and flip one state that's blue. we have two new polls we can show you. first nevada. one of the must-win toss-up states. good news for donald trump. he's tied in nevada. this is a state he'd fallen behind in after the debates. that's an encouraging sign for donald trump. again, he's got to win all of them. but then he also has to flip a blue state. one of the blue states this campaign talks about, new again, brand new nbc/"wall street journal" poll. a nine-point lead for hillary clinton. we can dig into the numbers. what do you see here? first of all a gender gap. look at this. trump winning among men by ten points. look at among women. a 25-point advantage. one other thing we can highlight out in nevada, what is driving that. that college/noncollege divide we talk about among professional voters, hillary clinton and donald trump tied among blue-collar voters. a 20-point advantage for donald trump.

he'd have to win all those toss-up states and flip a state like new hampshire. still a lot for him to accomplish. >> a forbidding map for sure. thank you. let us talk about two powerful earthquakes that rocked central italy last night, crumbling churches and other buildings. the quakes with magnitudes of 5.5 and 6.1 knocked out power and sent people running into the streets. the tremors come just two months after another powerful quake struck that region, killing nearly 300 people. there are no reports of any serious injuries in the wake of these quakes. and now to that frantic scene in boston we showed you at the top. passengers in a panic after a motor on a subway train overheated. it filled the cars with smoke. nbc's tom costello has the latest. >> good morning. the subway in boston, of course, is called the t. this happened on the orange line. the train involved did not fully pull into the station, preventing the subway cars from opening. the car doors.

cobination of two fires on the train's orange line that caused the black smoke to pour into the city's back bay station. >> turned out to be a motor fire. in the process, we also found a trash fire on the tracks, which we extinguished both. >> five people taken in for smoke inhalation -- pardon me, treated for smoke inhalation, three taken to the hospital. none of the injuries believed to be life threatening. investigators believe the entire situation where those two very minor incidents, including the overheating motor. guys, back to you. >> what a scare for them. i want to tell you now about some disturbing allegations at one of the nation's top colleges. multiple women are accusing a university of wisconsin student of sexual assault. and this morning investigators say they've made a disturbing discovery at that suspect's apartment. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in madison with the latest. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning. the student is due here in court later today for a bail hearing. his attorneys are blaming social media for a rush to judgment.

warrant, dozens of women have come forward asking to speak with investigators. this morning the university of wisconsin is in shock as multiple women accuse a student of sexual assault. >> it's been pretty devastating. >> reporter: so far alec cook faces four charges, but prosecutors say many more are possible. investigators searching his apartment say they found a black book in his nightstand with names of women he'd met, way what he wanted to do with them. according to the search warrant, disturbingly enough, there were statements of kill and statements of sexual desires. the first woman who went to police said cook strangled and assaulted her for more than two hours at his apartment on october 12th. then as news of his arrest spread around campus, police say another woman came forward, claiming he'd assaulted her too, back in february.

and felt compelled to come forward and explain what happened. we're glad she did. she's very brave to do so. >> reporter: cook's attorneys deny the allegations and say their client is a 20-year-old business major with no criminal history, who is seemingly been charge, tried, and convicted by a rapid-fire internet news cycle. they say blind acceptance of mere accusations without hearing testimony or seeing physical evidence leads to the stigmatization of innocent people. and they point at previously discredited rape allegations that received national attention at duke university and the university of virginia. but here in madison, outrage is mounting. >> we just keep hearing more and more about it, how there's multiple people who have been affected by it. i guess it just gets more and more sickening as we hear what's happened. >> reporter: cook is now suspended from the university and is banned from campus. again, he's due here in court

matt and savannah? >> gabe, thank you. samsung aims to recover quickly after news overnight third quarter operating profit tumbled 30% from a year before. last month, the company had to recall more than 2 million of its galaxy note 7 phones. samsung estimates the discontinuation of that phone cost the company about $3 billion. officials say they're expanding the probe into the note 7 fires beyond batteries and they're tryingre investors they would get to the bottom of one of the worst product failures in tech history. want to go back to that's frightening video of a tiger attack. a trainer is recovering this morning after being clawed and dragged by a bengal tiger at a fair in pensacola, florida. it happened tuesday in front of a group of children who are on a field trip. another trainer rushes in to try to help and was forced to hit the 2-year-old tiger repeatedly

i love it. >> reporter: bryce started little league at five years old, by eight he was pitching and once in middle school he dropped all other sports for baseball. >> how often did you play and practice? >> practice was an every day thing, five days a week, on the weekends i would play for my travel team. >> his talent well above average. by the age of 16 throwing pitches as fast as 91 miles an hour. >> do you think there is a lot of pressure on high school athletes to i know that when there is a scout back there and there is a radar gun pointing at you you know you want to throw your hardest. >> but then a set back. in january price tore a critical tendon in his right arm and an important decision loomed, whether to have what's known as tommy john's surgery. >> we wrestled with it, me and my wife spoke for hours about it and we just decided it's going to be his decision. >> it was a significant tear so

>> yes, we were very surprised. we're very careful with watching him, how much he pitches, when he pitches, how many innings he pitches. >> due to his young age dr. andrews wants brendan's arm to heal without surgery, six weeks in cast and now six weeks in a brace. his parents haven't ruled out brendon having the tommy john's surgery. >> it's not just about baseball because if it doesn't heal properly then it's going to affect him in everything that he does so w possible, you know, to not have surgery, but if that's the decision that we have to make and that's the best decision for brendon we will do what's best for him in the long run. >> bryce is healing from his surgery and hopes to play by spring. >> it's going good. i haven't had any problems. >> what would you say to other parents about this surgery? >> well, you've got to way out your situation, your kid's talent ability, the pros and cons and make the best decision. there is no right or wrong answer.
