7:00 am
welcome to 12 today on this saturday. today was the first time when i walked in, it was actually really chilly outside. >> i know that's the sad thing we can now say there's a little bit of a chill in the air. >> but that's sad. >> but people make fun of us though especially back east a lot of people, it was cool. yesterday it was even 79 degrees for a high temperature, and look outside right now, absolutely gorgeous, 62 degrees right now in downtown phoenix,
7:01 am
degrees out there you saw rain and snow up on the peaks last night, 31 in flagstaff, but here in the valley the sun liter on today things are going to warm up nicely 83 degrees, the average high this time of the year coming in at 80 so we are a little bit above that but as soon as that sun goes down those temperatures drop very very quickly down to 78 by 6:00, just really get outside and enjoy this weather that's what it's all about but only on 12 news eat at your own risk. m suffer from food poisoning this year alone. your favorite restaurants on this weeks list? >> list week we told you about the kitchen and raw chicken blood dripping on already prepared food. this week we're getting a glimpse at other disgusting things that are happening. >> team 12 ryan cody says the environmental services department is constantly on the look out for major risk factors and this week they found things you need to know about before
7:02 am
>> reporter: everyone blows their nose but nobody should be doing it while preparing your food. that's exactly what health inspectors found at this jason' deli on ray road in chandler. wear an employee did not wash her hands in between using the tissues and picking up the potato salad. then there's what inspectors saw happening at this on southern avenue in mesa. >> health inspectors found em cardboard box. do you ever try to clone one of these things? you can't. that's why they suggest using a cutting board. >> but the county is not just keeping up on restaurants . anyone serving food or drinks gets inspected, like this circle k on warner road in gilbertment it was flagged because the ice dispenser at the soda machine had "heavy

phoenix. >> where inspectors didn't find lettuce as expected but inside of a bucket with holes drilled in the side. >> what would happen if the environmental services department wasn't working for you? you'd always have to eat at your own risk without any way to check these reports first. >> and it's incredibly easy to look up the latest reports your favorite restaurant at 12news.com for a link to the website where all you have to do is type in the restaurants right up. now you're taking a live look at jefferson and fourth avenue and that's where the police pursuit of a wrong way driver ended with a pit maneuver all starting at arizona avenue and ray road. police followed the driver as he ran multiple red lights is several agency including dps, gilbert and phoenix police were involved and the driver is said to be now in police custody and was treated for a dog bite as the canine had to sub due him. investigators do believe

7:06 am
7:08 am
welcome back. whether you want to sell your home now soon or years from now home maintenance is critical to maintainyo we are here to see how to stay ahead and give your home a regular check up. this is something a lot of things people don't like doing correct? >> i know, we get up saturday mornings thinking i want to do home maintenance projects but it's never too soon to start or too late to start so if you haven't been doing it now is the time to get going especially with the change of seasons a lot of times people get caught up in the holiday rush and forget to be paying attention to their home so i think now before the holiday season gets crazy and we just
7:09 am
at your house and see if you need to do any regular maintenance. if you google online you can look up a bunch of different home maintenance lists i've got one posted on my blog but something to take a lock at especially again at this time of the year is your exterior of the home. we're always inside our house and might notice things inside the house that needs repair but we often forget to really take a look at the outside and i say start with the top and work your whole way down. a great place to start is the roof. i think a lot of people forget that home maintena really help to preserve your roof for a longer period of time. when people are buying a home they always think about the big expenses like an air conditioner or upgrading but a roof is another critical and big expense to take care of if you don't do regular maintenance along the way. >> you always need to replace your whole roof or can you do minor patch ups and things to avoid replacing the entire roof in foot churr for the next person to buy your home? >> you have hit the nail on the head exactly right. if you do regular maintenance with your roof you'll preserve it for a longer period of time
7:10 am
replace the whole roof at a quicker rate and a lot of times people think about rain with the roof but really one of the biggest culprits of damaging your roof is wind because it brings with it leaves and other debris that collect and those other collecting items on your roof start to erode the roof paper if you have a tile roof underneath it they collect and erode that roof paper and if you have a flat roof and it collects it starts to dim people so if you can clear out any of that debris make sure you have a clear not collecting there you'll keep your roof for a lot longer, rather than having to replace it sooner. >> if you have things like weather stripping, a lot of these things they don't seem too expensive if you can kind of knock them out one at a time or over the course of a few months of paint picking up maybe $100 worth of paint to do the outside or something like that. >> absolutely a quick trip to home depot or lowe's and they will give you a quick tutorial on how to use those products and again this is an excellent
7:11 am
just come off the warm summer months starting to cool off. as your home expands and contracts with the changing seasons you'll want to take a lock at again preserving as much as you can and keeping things tight and things from leaking is critical to keeping your house in good care. >> up here we have once a month things that you have to do change air filter, soft water tanks, hot water heater these are little thin you don't think of and can get let go for awhile. >> i know i've been guilty myself and something i ju keep track of dates when i change my air filters and add salt to my water softener. something else a lot of people do is forget when they put in their filters so write the date down on that little corner piece of your filter before you put it back in so if you do forget go up and lock and say i changed that four months ago i better get on that and oftentimes too with air filters people think about the summer months as you use your air conditioning a lot but that's a
7:12 am
and heat on a regular basis it is still collecting dirt and dust so it's still good to switch that out on a monthly base it throughout the year. >> and you said you have some stuff? >> yeah, thank you take a look and you can see multiple lists for quarterly, monthly, annually and so forth. >> and a few things always clean windows, carpets, driveway, hood filter things like that very small maintenance you can do and get your home sold. >> yes, cleaning is a good part >> a lot of things we don't want to do but they probably help out. >> absolutely. >> well thank you and we'll be right back. matt has another check of your weather which was very cool
7:14 am
7:15 am
and welcome back everyone. well if you're up this early you're actually experiencing a little chilly for some people. would you call this-- >> i would call it early. i think the temperatures are great. look at that shot outside a perfect time to get outside go hiking do anything you want because it is absolutely perfect. even this afternoon isn't really going to be that bad outside but a lot of people sending in their pictures from the storm that moved through earlier this week, check out this shot ri see that thunderstorm there on the corner as that sun really begins to set but guess what? our rainfall here in the valley we still need more .35 inches of rain well below the average of 6.58 inches so we desperately need rainfall but you can tell the temperatures they have certainly come down to what we saw just last week if you'll remember last week, we were in the hundreds but today, in the 80s right now 62 out there but look at the humidity up to 80% and if you
7:16 am
live picture locking towards the superstitions you'll see just a little bit of fog out there. could be isolated patches of fairly dense fog especially heading out towards superior so certainly use caution in that area but for the most part clear skies around the entire state that low pressure area that actually brought that rain the other day quickly moving off in towards new mexico you can see it on satellite and radar most of the moisture to the east and south of arizona but things are going to be warming up. there is future cat they showed low pressure quickly moving off in tid country high pressure builds right back into the region and that is going to mean warm conditions by the time we move into the middle portion of the week and in fact look at your seven day forecast keep it in mind for the average for this time of the year is around that 80-degree mark 86 by your sunday felt pretty nice and by tuesday and wednesday, 87 degrees. >> beautiful week thanks, matt. well, coming up next, why the 12 news plaza wasn't exactly filled with high school
7:17 am
7:18 am
7:19 am
well good evening everyo on friday night fever and normally you'd see all sorts of screaming kids right out there with them on the 12 news plaza, but it's playoff time, and that means that it's just cam cox and rob baker and we are on in the house and we're in the house like this with no studio audience it's playoff time right? >> that's right. welcome to week one of the playoff right here on friday night fever, no studio team we've got a full slot of games
7:20 am
first, we'll start it how we normally start it with the game of the week. >> no doubt about it, 6a playoff game between the seventh seeded mountainview, right here taking on the 10th seeded thunder. check it out first quarter opening kickoff, mountainview oh, wow. 95-yards and he will take this and it's a that. >> they have a 7-0 lead, but the thunder would respond check it out. vick thomas, jake white 28- yards touchdown and they fell on the two point conversion and mountainview has a 7-6 lead and move to the second quarter, and the lead and in punt formation but cooper brown blocks the punt and christian picks it up and he's down inside the
7:21 am
two plays later it's brody daniels and you'll see him from three yards out and 2014 at the half third quarter and that is a nice locking pass from nick thomas and 28-14 and then mountainview can't get it going there, so harris with the second int of the game picked off and oh, my goodness, thunder they move on with a 28- 14 lead. >> i tell you what. >> they strides aren't they guys? >> yes. >> dan heinz has those guys on a role right now. >> we had him in studio last week and we talked to coach about it they hadn't lost since they lost mid season they are the hottest team in arizona. watch out. >> five of the last six games. >> if you all think that was the game you have to watch this high school highlights football playoffs are here and this game had a little bit of everything. just less than three minutes
7:22 am
next play, reyeis s is going to let you finish but might just have the westley of all-times, 85-yards to the house. how about that kickoff return, we're tied at seven. just two minutes later, pinnacle's caleb covington will have the reception and he puts on the jets and touchdown. >> [applause] >> pioneers lead 14-7 next quarter 43 se and making that 16 but pinnacle is not done. watch this final play before the half and the sophomore is going to just go for it. hail mary coming in hot on the deflection and it's 31-21 at the half and five minutes left, pinnacle is within three but
7:23 am
recover and they win 52-42 but i've got to tell you upset alert that game was just insane. >> another upset red mountain and skyline early in the second skyline down three, and mason crawford, and 27-yard touchdown right there, 7-3 skyline, two minutes later back at it but and the end zone comes down with it for the touch back, later in the second it's third down and 27, tough to have a play call for this and they pick up 30-yards and a first down. that's a great play, coach put it in the playbook that leads to a field goal right here and skyline up 7-3 at the half looking at the score at the bottom of your screen red mound completes the come back up is
7:24 am
>> my goodness what a game here. desert ridge, boy look at here. into the end zone lucas right that puts him up 27-26 but it is don rogan, 24-yard run and he's running yard and they up their lead to 34-26 but they are going to try to get something going but my goodness, this right here, because desert ridge is there for the recovery and ridge holds on and wins it 34-26. >> okay guys we got the top dogs the mountain point pride trying to protect their top seed taking on their house taking on caesar chavez, todd graham first drive hand off to the junior, delgado, and mountain point is off and
7:25 am
highlight tonight i promise i'll explain it later after throwing a pick quarterback nick wallersted makes up for it, the pride are in control and he absolutely loves it and now the real fun begins he reels in the path. >> bring it back. >> the poor dude is out of pictures, ankles are broken. >> oh, my gosh. >> scores a few points laider todd graham you've seen enough and takes off in his helicopter i tried to catch a ride and had to drive to my second game later pride roll 52-14 over chavez. >> maybe we often try to catch a ride, but young and old, out enjoying playoff action love this time of the year, chandler hosting third quarter, tj green making it a case to be our friday night player of the year
7:26 am
later jake on conover connecting here and offense is just clicking 14-0 chandler and rolls in tonight to derek coldwell for the touchdown and looking good in the playoffs always looking good. 48-6 the final. >> now arizona and chandler they are six seeded hamilton huskies taking on the 11th seeded tucson badgers and this was all hamilton, jordan taking the pitch in the end zone for the third toucof and huskies making it look easy and they move on to the quarterfinals with a 47-30 win. >> on a single look at the 6 a bracket and can you see right at the top? oh, my goodness. >> a rematch. >> desert ridge, red mountain, perry hamilton and desert vista and chandler boy this, i'll
7:27 am
had a game earlier against mountain point and they kind of worked them. >> they will be out and so is hamilton against perry. >> i like desert vista. >> they are telling everybody if you get hot at the right time anything can happen in the playoffs and that's a great match up and all those games will be good.
7:29 am
good morning. welcome to 12 weekend today for saturday. >> well legalized marijuana is a controversial and contentious issue. now come tuesday, six states including arizona will ask voters to decide whether it should be legalized and then taxed and regulated like alcohol. >> team 12 mark curtis traveled to colorado with photo journalist chad bricks to find out how their legalized pot program is working out and a
7:30 am
children to see. >> we've all seen the ads for and against legalized pot in arizona. >> they were empty words. >> it's prop 205. and in just a few days arizona voters will have to decide whether pot which right now is only legal for those with a medical card should be available to anyone over the age of 21. >> don't believe false promises. >> is it the right or wrong thing for our state? >> we decided to go to colorado where americas experiment with legalized marijuana began three years ago to verify. >> southwest airlines flight on final approach to denver home of the broncos mile high
7:31 am
innocent of a new and deadly menace lurking behind closed doors. marijuana, the burning weed with it roots. >> in the classic, america was warned about the dangers of marijuana which interestingly was legal until 1937. and now 79 years later in colorado it is again. and no one is more focused on ma correctly than andrew friedman. >> how does your family react to this? >> his actual title is director of marijuana coordination for the state of colorado but everyone knows him as the states pot man, the man who overseas the vast amount of rules and regulations tied to colorado's pot law. >> personally, how did you view this proposition before it
7:32 am
mainly because being the first in the country to do anything there are a whole bunch of possible consequences, and i think my main nervousness was the unanticipated consequence, but as you turn this on and some loophole we hadn't thought through was going to create a massive problem. >> and just for years pot has become one of biggest industries. >> last year it was a billion dollar industry and to put that in comparison craft brewery was $1.1 billion. this year it looks like it's probably out paced that but it right about on par. >> part of colorado's wind fall comes from pot tourism. >> and this is what colorado's cannabis tourism looks like, a big party bus people from all over the country are getting on
7:33 am
weed. >> hello hello. my name is mia jane, i'll be your colorado cannabis tour guide for today. is everyone exited for their colorado cannabis tour? >> yes. >> all ready awesome i like to hear it. i'm going to get music cranked and joints passed out. we're going to get you guys a little bit higher for your cannabis tour experience. >> the people on our bus ranged from their 20s to their 70s and none of them were from colorado. >> actually, it was because of the tour that come, and i didn't want to and told my friends i was in going to do it and finally said what the heck i'm going to do it and here i am. >> how are you? >> i'm mark. >> mark? >> where you from? >> alabama. >> safe to say mike was feeling good and remember those days of going to concerts where the smoke was so thick you could cut it with a knife? on this bus, it was hard not to get a contact high. over the course of the next
7:34 am
and of course, with a lot of sampling but only on board because in colorado and it will be the same in arizona if it passes, you can't smoke in public. >> i'm 100% va disability from vietnam, so you know, and it's really like a medicine to me too. i can't sleep but when i smoke pot some years i've been isolated. i've live way out in the woods. i don't share a life with nobody but my dog and this is unbelievable. [laughter] i love it. >> but not everyone shares mike's enthusiasm. >> we have hundreds of parents who will look at you and say well i smoked a little pot in
7:35 am
>> penny didn't want to see pot legalized in colorado and now she heads up a group called smart colorado. its mission? >> some of them are very attractive. >> to educate parents and advocate for kids. >> we have gumy bears and lolly pops and sodas and lesions and lip gloss that all contain highly potent thcs so i don't know how many voters really focus on that and it wasn't campaign, so arizona at least you have a landscape to go off of whereas colorado has no idea. >> so these smell just like gumy bears? >> exactly. >> i can't eat very many. >> and this is a chocolate? >> peanut butter fudge. >> the edibles seem to be the biggest area of concern.
7:36 am
fully make a good decision about what they're ready for and this isn't about politics, it's not about one party over another, it's about our kids and the unintended consequences. >> in this public park not far away from coors field, kids a lot of them homeless openly get stoned which again technically is illegal but the kids tell me they are never hassled by police. this is thei is nick named stoner hill. >> when pot became legal in colorado did it open the flood gates for everyone to start getting high? >> absolutely not. not to be judgment all but i've been a denver native all my life and denver has always been a pot capitol. that was before legalization and long since the 80s but denver is a weed city. we've actually seen not a
7:37 am
legalization of cannabis because it's not something to be feared anymore. it's an industry. it's something kids can go to school for. it's something the kids can get a high paying job so it's not as much something to be feared anymore as it is like to be respected. >> it was developed by former denver mayor web who you probably seen in the vote no on 205 commercials airing in arizona. >> denver schools got nothing. >> it didn't take me very long it. >> i have three kids, two are lawyers and one is part time homeless whose always been addicted to marijuana and every time someone says to me that it's not harmful, all i have to do is lock at him on the days i see him. my testimony is locking at a 50 year old former high school potential all-american that was
7:38 am
is now down to 160. >> that's your son? >> that's my son. >> so nobody can tell me about the addiction. because i've seen it up close. >> obviously, he has a very personal reason for his legalized pot and he never imagined when he pushed to build this park that part of it could become a haven for smokers, but really that wasn't the norm. in fact the denver that i expected to see, people walking around getting high, air, it wasn't what we found. it seemed that colorado even those against it have quietly started to accept it. >> mason who authored colorado's pot law and is now working on arizona's initiative to legalize it says look, pot isn't going away, so why not reg you lit it and make some money from it and put it to
7:39 am
lost according to the aclu, on incarceration? >> well i think that colorado is really demonstrating that you can end prohibition and successfully reg you lit marijuana similar to alcohol. the state is still seeing hundreds of millions of dollars of marijuana sales like it did before but they are taking places of businesses now instead of the underground markets. >> do you have any regrets at all about doing this? >> no, absolutely not. there's justification for marijuana prohibition. >> you don't need to arrest countless adults who are responsibly using marijuana in order to prevent teens from using it. >> tell me if this is true. 202 mcdonald's in state of colorado, 322 starbucks, 424 pot dispenseries. >> and several thousand liquor stores. can you imagine having a glass of wine with dinner or to grab a six pack for the baseball game you had to try going to
7:40 am
find some alcohol and maybe it's safe, maybe it's not, maybe the person selling it has some other more dangerous products with them. that not a good public policy. >> even andrew from earlier in the story acknowledges that colorado has always had a love affair with weed. >> people are eager any time marijuana shows up that says lock that's legalization but our data says a lot of people are using marijuana before and that was not it's a drug we consider to be a failure and that the people in colorado decided to take a risk and legalize it this way and i think there are a lot of potential benefits for regulation and there's some downfalls for commercialization. our job is now not to second guess the wisdom of the voters but to actually make the positives of regulation out weigh the negative and commercialization and we're going to work as hard as we can
7:41 am
works. and the governor hopes it works and nobody sticks by whether they were for or against legalization. it's now we want it to work for colorado. we're going to work as hard as we can. >> and he also says that no on 205 ad campaigns are misleading. >> andrew the arizona add says at one point denver schools were promised millions of dollars they got nothing. what the ad doesn't say saw they a employ for it. >> $40 million did go in and then 40 million will go in this year and then we also pay for after school programming. >> and what about the team marijuana use in colorado is the highest in the country? >> so unfortunately, there are two different surveys on this. the one we use which is much larger survey shows that if you go before legalization to right
7:42 am
increase but all of it is significant, it a flat line in terms of use and that is on par with the national average. >> scale of one to 10, how successful would you say after a couple of years this has been? >> i would say we are between seven and eight for the rollout and i'd is say we have it's a big not applicable for long term success. we won't know for awhile. >> well if you're still undecided check out 12news.com. we have a special mna of the issue so you can decide which way to vote. and as the holiday shopping season gets under way we want to save you some cash. coming up next on 12 weekend today, the car maintenance you need to know about so you don't
7:43 am
7:44 am
7:45 am
welcome back everyone. well regular maintenance helps you avoid more costly car repairs down the road. >> you know this guy right here, jim and you're here to
7:46 am
that's what this is all about because we all know cars can be expensive. >> people know that you're supposed to change your oil every three months 3000 miles and they're wrong. the newer cars, the oil change intervals have been stretched to almost 10,000 miles from normal driving conditions. of course phoenix, arizona is severe condition usually show you it could be like 4000 miles but your owners manual will tell you how often you should change the oil in your car designed for the car. a lot of people upsell you into synthetic oil. oh, it's better. well it is better but i'd rather see you useless money on conventional oil or whatever is designed for your car and change it often than buy really expensive oil and overdrive interval. >> how do you find out how long you go in your car, do you ask your mechanic or find out? >> both are ideas because the manual tells you what the car was designed for and the
7:47 am
relationship with one mechanic he can tell what's going on with your car and the way you drive it some of the time you can go longer inter have and some time it might be a little shorter. >> do you think a lot of people know you done have to do that because i'm one of those people who you think i've got to go in its been 3000 miles you don't think about how things changed? >> i don't think people in the industry know every car getting to know your car and how you drive it that's important. >> there's a lot of other things that they will tell you what to do. let talk about chassis moving, what's that about? >> well back in the day moving joints all had greece so you had these little metal fittings that a greece gun would attach to and almost no car designed to has those on them but a professional mechanic will go through the car and see if there are any on your vehicle. the reason why is after market components like say somebody is replacing the ball joint that new ball joint could have a greece on it and if someone
7:48 am
a good idea when they are under there changing the oil to lock for anywhere to go around with the greece gun. >> i feel like every time you get an oil change there's always a lot of talk about filters, you need a new filter for this or that. have you have a couple filter with you right now? >> well we live in a very dirty environment and every time you get serviced it's a good idea to take a lock at it and inspect how much debris is in it. the old idea is can i see works great until you go to a newer filter-- >> this looks dirty to me. >> that is a brand new filter. >> it doesn't feel very dirty but the dark coloring in it makes it look dirty already. >> what's the trick to tell if it is dirty? >> if you look down in between the pleats of the filter you'll see where the dirt builds up and another thing is check the filter and drop it on the surface and when it leaves
7:49 am
filter, it just tells you filters already done this work. >> and then talking about flushing, you have to flush this and flush that and they say do the coolant flush every oil change but not is necessarily? >> well it's one of the great chemicals we can test. we can test for level of protection, ph balance and tell whether that is good or bad. if you're changing it every time you're definitely over doing it because coolant should lt. at lost a year applications. some of them like the original equipment say it will go 10 years 10,000 miles and i'm sure it would if you left it in the jar in the trunk and once it's getting outed and there's air exposed to it it should be tested regularly. >> a lot of people swear by it and say i have friends who have to put premium gas in my car and i have to use the better stuff and that isn't always true. i've seen this and learned this before but not every car
7:50 am
to very few vehicles that require high octane in order to burn it properly. if you go to the gas station websites they will tell you most vehicles use regular gas. regular use to mean ledded, regular now means the lowest grade unleaded. still want to use a premium brand of fuel. you don't want to buy the cheapest stuff you can find but in all the major manufactures the lowest brand will usually be fine for your vehicle. >> is there an example of the car that would need premium >> most of the ones that are kind of race applications fairly rare not things you'd buy at the local car dealer it's high compression things that have been modified even. >> okay so modified like a racing car if you want to go fast they have thing on their car like that? >> if it does require it like general motors had vehicles that required it it's on the gas cap and the fuel. it's everywhere on the vehicle that tells you that you have to use premium.
7:51 am
civic you probably don't need premium gas maybe? >> i haven't seen one that needs premium but i knew a honda civic that needed airline fuel because the combustion was so high. >> oh, okay. i don't need that car and this is something that, you know, a lot of people say i have to go to the dealership. you have like a volkswagen, and i take it there when you have the warranty but after that-- >> they almost tell you that you have to get it done here for the warranty to be valid >> absolutely not true. you can doubt in your own driveway. there's no requirement for it to be done but keep good records and do not exceed the manufactures interval. if they said that it's 4000 miles change the oil every 4000 miles. >> so just really it's keep good reports and check the manual just don't go off what someone is telling you. it's so hard to some types find a good mechanic so just check everything in your car? >> if you go to a mechanic we
7:52 am
need when was this donor you need to prove to somebody that it was done even if you're selling the car you can go look this car is proper ally maintained and it helps your value. >> i learned good stuff today so thank you so much and oh, you have a live event right? >> actually i have a couple things, one is the rock and roll at ian school park and then we're also at local first which is over at margaret hence park. >> will be there. and coming up right after the break we are going to meet mimi, our pet of the week and find out how you can become her
7:53 am
7:54 am
