abe, abe, abe. abe bagoda has died. 94 years old. amazing actor in movies like that one, "the godfather." and on television, "barney miller." that face and that sense of humor. >> what about that big heart? so many times he came to studio 1a, one of our most favorite guests. beloved. you don't kiss just anyone on the head, matt. we'll look back with a lot of affection affection. top story this morning, one member of the anti-government protesters this morning shot dead, eight others arrested as the fbi and local police look to end the standoff. joe fryer has the story. good morning. >> reporter: 25 days into this occupation authorities decided it was time to make some arrests, but things turned violent. the confrontation played out not at the wildlife refuge but on a highway 50 miles away as some members of the anti-government

community meeting. along a rural highway the fbi and oregon state police stopped the occupiers vehicles to arrest members of the group when authorities say shots were fired though they would not elaborate on who fired. one protester was killed, identified by family as lavoy finicum. he became a spokesman for the occupation. >> honestly, there are things more important than your life and freedom is one of them. >> reporter: nbc news spoke by phone with finicum's daughter. >> i want to know why because i know my dad. he would never put someone's he would only defend his life. >> reporter: another militant was injured, treated at the hospital, then turned over to the fbi. in all, eight anti-government occupiers are now behind bars, including the group's leader, nevada rancher amon bundy. shan na cox was arrested.

after the occupation began. >> we are setting ourselves up to help the citizens here to reclaim their lands back. >> i've got to go again, okay? >> reporter: another arrest happened again in arizona where occupier john ritzheimer posted a video hugging his kids before turning himself out. they took control of the wildlife refuge on january 2nd. they're calling for local control of the federal land and demanding freedom for two oregon ranchers convicted of lighting fires on government land. many county residents wanted the group to leave, authorities made no forceful attempt to stop the occupation until now. some are militants, still remain at the refuge. it's not over. a few did choose to leave this morning. those who were arrested now face federal felony charges of conspiracy to impede u.s. officers. savannah and matt? >> joe fryer, thank you. another major story we're covering this morning. donald trump's decision to pull out of tomorrow night's

which comes just days before the iowa caucuses. we have complete coverage beginning with nbc national correspondent peter alexander, peter, good morning. >> reporter: hi, matt. we're live in iowa this morning. barely 100 hours out from caucus day in this state. this is farm country which is fitting because donald trump is now locked in a high stakes game of chicken with both fox news and ted cruz. taking a page out of his playbook, donald trump is walking away from the table abruptly announcing he'll skip tomorrow night's debate. >> let's see how much money fox is going to make on the debate without me, okay? all right. let's see. >> reporter: a trump aide telling nbc news it's not under consideration and his word is bond. rival ted cruz immediately challenged trump to a one on one 90 minute debate duel and hit the candidate for backing out. >> donald's is a fragile soul.

up at the interview, you know what you'd say? you're fired! >> reporter: trump's latest fox news feud escalated quickly after they slammed moderator megyn kelly for not being fair. they went head to head over her questions on his views on women. kelly responded on air last night. >> mr. trump has repeatedly brought up that exchange of a evidence of alleged bias. we agreed to disagree. >> reporter: the network fired back overnight with a statement charging trump's campaign manager with threatening kelly saying we can't give in towards terror ryizations against any of our employees. trump highlighting his anti-immigration stance and looking at blunt criticism that he's a new york liberal taughting the endorsement of jerry fall well jr. with tony perkins backing cruz. still anti-abortion leaders are

an excuse, they gave him a genuine rationale to say i'm not going to show up at a debate if they're taunting me. >> sechbsing an opportunity, ted cruz wasted no time. he said, look, i'll challenge you donald to a one-on-one debate with no moderator obstacles. how can trump duck that? >> well, it's going to be an interesting question to see whether that debate becomes an issue. look, ted cruz must win iowa more than donald trump. it's not absolutely essential that he finishes first, but the stakes are high. trump leads in the other 49 states effectively. trump i don't think will do a one-on-one debate with cruz. make no mistake, right now trump has a lot of momentum going on here in iowa. cruz has to find a way to stop him. >> mark halperin in des moines, thank you.

it's being offered to children six years of age and younger. by the way, rachel maddow will host a conversation tonight. refunds to customers who are concerned about the zika virus if they have tickets to the affected venues. united said in all areas mentioned, american airlines 308 si is a little bit more restrictive. it says the airline will offer refunds to pregnant women if they have a doctor's note saying cities in central and south america. it's been linked to birth defects in brazil and said to be spreading to other places in the world. the case of the so-called affluenza teen is back in the news. 18-year-old ethan couch has officially dropped his bid to stay in mexico. he could be sent back to texas. couch and his mother fled to

video surfaced which appeared to show him around alcohol at a party that would have been be a violation of his probation. they were later arrested in puerto vallarta, new mexico. his mother remains free on bond. there is big news from the tech world this morning. apple bracing for its biggest sales decline in 13 years. the tech giant says revenue could fall more than 8% this quarter compared to a year earlier. analysts say the latest iphone models aren't providing the boost apple needs to match the massive sales growth it enjoyed last year. apple's ceo tim cook says, quote, we're seeing extreme conditions unlike anything we've experienced before. we'll turn to al who joins us. what's going on in the weather? are you busy? >> not as busy as we've been, but we are watching florida which has seen a lot of rain thanks to this el nino powered jet. it continues today. more heavy showers and

according to the american psychological association, one in seven women experiences postpartum depression. about 50% of those, it's their first episode of depression ever. the same percentage also start to experience these symptoms during pregnancy. it's not just the postpartum period. screening is so important. >> this is a time when women experience many hormonal changes. how do you differentiate between the baby blues versus postpartum depression. >> we generally say the baby blues should last up to two weeks or so. again, it's not a definite at day 15 you should feel okay. if you're not, you have it. the symptoms would be the same that you can experience during regular depression. that is, sadness, crying, depressed mood, loss of interest in doing things that would normally make you happy. there are, of course, unique symptoms to postpartum such as fear of being left alone with the baby, for example, feeling guilty. the screening doesn't take very long. it's a very good screening test for postpartum. it's ten questions. it takes a few minutes to
