talks between the unions and bart officials are reportedly at a standstill. commuters are on edge as the monday morning ride to work is inching closer. they are anxiously awaiting word on whether bart workers will in fact walk off the job. here is what we know. bart contracts with the two unions are set to expire sunday at midnight. bart workers have already delivered a 72-hour strike notice to bart management, which means a strike could begin as early as monday morning. 400-thousand commuters use bart every week day. if there is a strike it would likely cause a traffic area. and union negotiators walked away from contract talks saturday. making the strike even more likely. you can see them here wheeling away the suitcases they had brought in case of a marathon negotiating session. the unions accuse bart management of delay tactics, and of barely showing up for talks. so, they say there's a good chance workers could walk off the job,

and bart's 400-thousand riders will need to make other plans tomorrow. >>"because the district has kept us waiting for the last thirty six hours without a substantial proposal we no longer think that it's fair to keep the public not knowing if there is gong to be a strike so we will be out on the picket line on monday and we want to pledge to the riders we'll continue to try and reach an agreement but we will be on strike on monday." >>bart managers say a meeting with union representatives is still scheduled to take place today at eleven. union representatives say they aren't planning to attend. it was shortly before 4-pm when bart officials were told the union officials had left the bargaining table. bart officials say they had planned to deliver a new economic plan to a mediator when they got the news. >> we called a mediator in

increasing in egypt this protests. president mohammed morsi was elected a year ago today, thousands are gathering in cairo's tahrir square. they are demanding the immediate resignation of the muslim- brotherhood-supported president. they're fed up with fuel shortages, power cuts, a collapsing economy and rising crime. but morsi's supporters say they're ready for a fight to help him stay in power. european officials are demanding answers this morning about reports of u- s spying. a german newspaper reports the national security

agency has been eavesdropping on e-u offices worldwide. their report was based on snowden. e-u officials says if the report is true, it could be relations with the united states. now investigating whether the spying broke german laws. washington has not yet issued a response. the obamas arrived in cape town, south africa this morning to pay tribute to they're visiting the prison where the anti-apartheid leader spent much of his 27 years behind bars. they'll also tour a quarry where mandela developed the lung problems that hospitalized him this month. afterwards, president obama will announce an initiative doubling access to electricity in sub-saharan africa. he says the seven-billion- dollar plan builds on mandela's legacy of creating opportunity for africans. it will initially focus on six countries including tanzania, where president obama wraps his african tour this week.

fairfield. make '80s for concord appeared upper seventies and low eighties for the south bay. >> back to you marty. >> following this morning. in case of a bart strike, there are other options for commuters. one is a charter bus service that bart will operate from the east bay to san francisco. the service will run from five to nine in the morning, and will pick up passengers from four different bart stations in the east bay. those stations are el cerrito del norte, walnut creek, pleasanton, and fremont. the buses will then take passengers to the west board another bus. one thing to note is that passengers * can not* start oakland station. once over the bridge, commuters will be dropped

off at the transbay terminal in san francisco. that is also where the evening commute pick up will be. three to seven p-m. bart officials say the buses can only transport about four-thousand people. that is not nearly enough to accommodate the 400- thousand passengers that ride bart everyday. and the ferry service is the bay. there will be three additional vessels added to the san francisco bay ferry service fleet. this will allow them to carry 30-thousand additional the ferries will also extend their service hours. officials are warning commuters who already use the ferry service that they full capacity. they are also warning that parking at the terminals will be a problem, and they encourage passengers to carpool to the docks. and for those of you who could get stuck driving to work tomorrow because of the strike, here' a check of gas prices around the bay area. currently it costs 4-dollars and 7-cents for a gallon of

giants, a's and quakes stanford last night to see the san jose earthquakes galaxy.

live look outside. mount tam extreme temperatures are forcing san jose park rangers to close popular alum rock park today. it's an emergency closure meant as a preventative. temperatures could hit 100 degrees today, with low humidity and winds up to 12 miles an hour. those are prime fire the park is regularly closed on mondays, so the park's until tuesday. a reminder during this heat wave not to leave animals or kids in locked cars. pleasant hill police arrested 38-year-old angela kleinfeld on friday after vehicle. police say she left her boxer in the car while the city's high reached 101 degrees.

july first might as well be doomsday for million of americans paying off their college student loans. interest rates could double. zain asher talks with some students about what the higher rates would mean for them and their finances. >>"i'm almost $60,000 in debt, which will affect my ability to get a mortgage, my ability to have children and put them through a good education, it'll will affect which kind of job i choose." columbia student rachel boehr started out studying drama but skyrocketing tuition costs forced her to drop out, now at age 30, she's only just finished her undergraduate degree. >>"we're asking too much of our college students and we're narrowing and narrowing the field of who can be a college student in the country." american college grads owe more than $1 trillion dollars. tuition costs continue to soar, rising interest rates could soon become the next headache facing new grads. interest rates for need- based or stafford loans, is currently fixed at 3.4%. unless congress intervenes by july 1, that rate is scheduled to double. >>"i definitely think that doubling the rate to 6.8% would definitely increase default rates because again the students who are receiving the subsidized
