>> reporter:with the pending storm around the corner, tree crews have been scattered across the bay area, doing some last minute pruning before the rain and wind arrive. >> reporter:maintaining your trees is one way to prevent potential property damage.or worse.if they come down and hit people. >> reporter:but how do you know which ones should concern you. >> reporter:kron 4's dan kerman got those answers today from an arborist he joins us live from san francisco with what you need to know. >> reporter:tree experts say the biggest concern with the coming storm is that strong winds could take down branches nicholas crawford/davey tree arborist 08-17 this is an example of a tree where the ends are less dense, or thinned out, which makes it better prepared for a storm. arborist nicholas crawford says those scanning their own yards should check for that and make sure trees are cutback at least 4 feet away from the home >> reporter:another concern

>> grant: a police pursuit of a pair of auto theft suspects ends outside an east bay high school. it put the school in lock down for a time. investigators tell kron4's haaziq madyun one of the suspects actually ran onto the school campus.

>> reporter:two auto theft suspects ditched this stolen vehicle right across the street from acalanes high school thursday around 10:25 am. this photo was taken by claire gallagher of the acalanes blue print. this is cellphone video recorded while police searched for the two suspects >>"one had went north into the high school the high school campus" >> reporter:lafayette police chief eric christensen >>"set up a perimeter, placed the school on lockdown, we also placed spring hill elementary school on lockdown" >> reporter:lafayette police notified and residents in the area using this nixel app >>"so with one message in the community we can tell everyone.here is what's going on" >> reporter:what was going on started thursday morning here at dicks sporting goods in pleasant hill. that is where the two suspects allegedly tried to use credit cards that were taken during an auto burglary spree in danville earlier this week. pleasant hill police were notified and followed the suspects into lafayette >>"the suspect that went into the campus was located soon room, he was taken into custody, the suspect located on the south end was located by a concord police canine" >> reporter:the lockdown was lifted about an hour later,

no students or teachers were injured during the incident. in lafayette haaziq madyun, kron4news. >> grant:in the south bay. we now know the identity of the suspects who were arrested after a seven-hour long standoff in san jose. the man has been identified as 36-year-old jesus calixto. and the second suspect has been identified as 27-year- old rachael losoya. >> grant:the drama started yesterday morning after a burglary was reported at the o'reilly auto parts store on tully road in east san jose. police say calixto and losoya robbed the store. losoya was arrested nearby, and calixto took off.allegedly breaking into three nearby houses.which were occupied. >> grant:police say he stayed in one of the homes. where he held a woman against her will with a knife before police peacefully took him into custody. >> grant:returning now to our top story, the weather. forecasters are becoming more bullish on forecasts

percent chance that we will have a weak one for the remainder of the fall and winter months. >> reporter:la nina means, on average, northwest and less for california, but not always. the same is true for el nino, last year's el nino was a kind of dud, producing only normal rainfall for francisco. >> that has to be tempered by the fact that we have had weak systems. so, if we are just going on past averages. yes, it will get worse. but that is not a forecast that it does what is happening or had happened in the past. >> reporter:null says a la nina would likely mean slightly more less farther south. but even five or 10 percent more or less snow and or rain could make a big difference in terms of the drought.

remain in critical condition at a boston hospital. the two were called out to an apparent domestic dispute in east boston last night. >> grant:when the officers arrived, they came under fire. police later shot and killed the suspect -- 33-year-old kirk figueroa. he did not have a criminal history and was not licensed to carry a gun in massachusetts. >> grant:but officers say he may have been prosecuted in other states for impersonating a police officer and possibly arson. but that information has yet to be confirmed. >> grant:thousands of law enforcement officers attended a memorial service for a los angeles who was shot and killed last week in the line of duty. you can see hundreds of police cars filled the parking lot of lancaster baptist church today.to honor the 29-year veteran steve owen's he was killed while responding to a burglary call in lancaster on october fifth. >> grant:owen is survived by his wife and three children. his suspected killer. trenton lovell is facing multiple charges including capital murder. and could receive the death penalty or life in prison without parole if convicted. return

>> vicki:a man accused of setting off bombs in new jersey and new york city made his first court appearance today. ahmad khan rahimi is charges for attempting to shoot and kill officers trying to capture him. he is reportedly reposnsible for setting off a pipe bomb in a new jersey town.and the same day.a pressure cooker bomb in new york city. >> vicki:this all happened on september 17th. you can see in the video.rahimi appeared in court via video from his hospital bed. he has been hospitalized with gunshot wounds from the shootout with police that led to his arrest. >> vicki:federal investigators have released the preliminary jersey train crash. details on the facts of the investigation show that the new jersey transit failed to stop.overrode a bumping post.and struck a wall of
