(catherine) kron4's michelle kingston is in the neighborhood in fairfield tonight-- and talked to neighbors who say they had no idea what was going on behind closed doors. michelle? no idea. they are totally shocked. they said they never saw any children -- let alone 10 children.we know the mother is inside right now -- she's not talking to us.we've seen a younger man come and go from here this afternoon -- he's also not commenting. (catherine) another big story we're following tonight--- a woman is behind bars, after being accused of trying to steal another woman's baby on mother's day. it happened yesterday as a mother was pushing her 2 month old baby in a stroller near natoma and 14th streets in san francisco's mission district. that's just 2 blocks away from the 16th street bart station. police say 23- year-old diamond harris of pleasant hill reportedly tried grabbing the baby from the stroller. they say witnesses stepped in and stopped her. harris left the scene with three other people-- but police eventually tracked her down and arrested her. (grant) the man accused in the july 20-15 rape and murder of 8-year old "maddie" middleton... has pleaded ánot guilty to the crimes in santa cruz. as kron four's rob

fladeboe reports now, the case is bogged down by delays over how the suspect will be tried. adrian gonzalez/defendant "....do you understand what we are doing here today? yes. do you understand you have a right to a preliminary examination within 60 days? yes....18 year old adrian "a..j." gonzalez entered a plea of not guilty monday to charges of murder with a special allegation of lying in wait, kidnapping, forcible rape and lewd acts with a child. the child was 8- year-old madyson "maddy" middleton, whose body was found in a dumpster outside her home in santa cruz in july of 2015. gonzalez was fifteen when the crimes occurred but prosecutors want him tried as an adult. recently approved prop 57 however, says a judge, not district attorneys shoud make that call. a judge has since sided with prosecutors but the defense has appealed that ruling.larry biggam/public defender ".....this kid never has a therapist or a counselor in his entire life until after these horrific crimes. in my mind the village failed and

golden state killer was back in a sacramento county courtroom today... joseph deangelo appeared in a barred-off area....and this time the 72-year-old former police officer was 'not' using a wheelchair. he's accused of at least a dozen murders and nearly 50 rapes in the1970's and 80's. no significant action was taken today - and deangelohas still not entered a plea. his public defender talked to reporters afterwards.. diane howard/public defender: i don't believe that we're going to be entering a plea on may 29th, but things can change, but i just don't believe that they will. reporter: so what happened in there today?diane howard: it was a continuance of motions that we've been fighting of sealing of arrest and search warrants and so forth. reporter: as far as the suspect appearing a lot stronger, do you have anything to say about that?diane howard: i don't.reporter: how does he feel? diane howard: i'm not going to talk to you about his condition. there were questions about whether deangelo was as weak andhelpless as he appeared during an earlier court hearing.. meantime - a judge is considering whether to make public search and

arrest warrants.. another hearing has been scheduled for may 29th. (grant) one person dead following a stabbing on the campus of a bay area university. an arrest has been made, but students there tell kron4's haaziq madyun... the crime has shaken their sense of safety. the person has been identified as 19-year-old tyler bratton of santa rosa. petaluma police allege that bratton stabbed to death a 26-year-old male victim inside a dorm here on the campus of sonoma state university shortly before 7:30pm sundaypetaluma police say although the incident happened on campus neither the suspect nor the stabbing victim are sonoma state students. both men appear to have been visiting a female student living in the dormthis student lives in

the dorm next door. she describes coming across her neighbor and the stabbing suspect. she asked not to reveal her identitysotsotin fact this roommate...who also asked that we conceal her identity... actually lives inside of the dorm where the stabbing occurred. she says she feared for her safety and reported that to the university police sotwe reached out to the university spokesperson to see what they have to say about this. we are waiting for their response. the identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. in rohnert park haaziq madyun kron4news

new tonight at 5... police have made an arrest after a shooting in a parking lot at the santa cruz beach boardwalk. 18-year-old javier calvo of vacaville is now behind bars-- accused of shooting and killing 19- year-old isaac lopez, also from vacaville. police say the two men were in a car with two other friends when the shooting happened last night. this is video from the scene last night. calvo and lopez had traveled to santa cruz earlier in the day with friends.

police say lopez was shot in the torso-- and he died at the hospital. right now the motive is not clear. meanwhile on saturday...there was stabbing near the boardwalk...police saying that was gang related. (grant) this just in.. the body of a missing skier from richmond has been found in the sierra. thomas mullarkey failed to mullarkey thomas mullarkey failed to return to his cabin in march after a day of skiing at the bear valley resort. a search was started soon after -- but was halted several times over the next few days due to blizzard conditions. (catherine) time is running out for homeless residents living in a sprawling encampment behind the straw-flower village shopping center in half moon bay. the deadline to move out --- 7 tomorrow morning. kron4's maureen kelly says they're being evicted because ofconcerns over the enviromentally senstive area where they're living..

here's just some of the garbage accumulating along the section of the pilarcitos creek that the city wants to clear out of there. this encampment has been growing for decades.....and so has the enviromental degradation to this area.what do you have people living in close proximity to the creek you get human waste drug paraphernalia just regular garbage, food waste when it accumulates as much as it has now the damage can be long term so we're trying to be ahead of it remove all that garbage and to allow nature to take it's course to some degreethe area, tucked behind the safeway at the strawflower village shopping center has also been a target for illegal dumping which compounds the problem. this sign was posted friday giving those living here notice that they had 72 hours to pack up their things and move. officials say they've been working with the estimate 20 -25 homeless living here for several months. today is one of several intensive service days they've held with homeless service providers who are here to try and tempt the residents out of the camp, and into shelters and other services like outpatient treatment options.

well kind a looks like a landfill it wasn't like it was before i came along time ago david, who didn't want to give his last name says he's been living in this camp for 20 years. he says he's willing to move into a shelter but eventually wants to return to half moon bay. i need to come back to my home the deadline for those living in the camp to get out is 7am tuesday morning. the city and a homeless service provider will be here making sure there are no the last minute stragglers. a cleanup crew will begin work after 8 am tuesday morning. because it says in environmentally sensitive area the work has to be done by hand no machines can be involved so they expect it will take approximately 10 days to pick up all the debris here maureen kelly kron4 news. already evacuated. dozens of homes and vehicles are destroyed. scientists say one of the craters could erupt at any minute and they're capable of spreading clouds of ash for miles. president trump has declared a major disaster there, which frees up federal dollars to help. (catherine) the u.s. has moved its embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem....with a formal opening today. but in ongoing violence on the border between israel and gaza -- at least 55 protestors have been killed - and more than 27- hundred injured. most of them palestinians. omar jimenez has the latest from washington. president donald trump: today we officially open the us embassy in jerusalem.president trump appearing by video and to applause as the united states embassy in israel moves from tel aviv to jerusalem. it's a decision trump announced back in december when he formally recognized the city as the capital of israel.benjamin netanyahu / israeli prime minister: president trump by recognizing

gambling in more states in coming months. it won't happen automatically though.. lawmakers in each state must still pass legislation okaying sports betting, if they haven't already. meaning new regulations for licensing and taxing. a california assemblyman is already moving forward with a constitutional amendment to make it happen. although it's considered unlikely it will be put together in time to make a june deadline for the november ballot it's also possible that congress could get involved... (grant) san francisco city officials are ramping up security ahead of the big bay to breakers race. and as kron4's will tran reports...they are encouraging racers and spectators to sign up for emergency text alerts. more than 100-thousand people will jam into a few downtown san francisco miles this sunday morning.extra police officers will be on patrol the night before bay to breakers and during to make sure everyone is safe.as an added layer of security the office of emergency management is also providing a text alert in case authorities need to contact you during the event.

kron4 is always tracking local stories. here's a look at what's going on in your neighborhood right now. (grant) a mother and a father have been arrested in fairfield after 10 kids were found living in what police are calling horrible conditions. 30-year-old ina rogers and 29-year-old jonathan allen were arrested last month after the children were rescued. it happened in fairfield on fieldstone court-- when police were returning a missing 12-year- old to her home. that is when officers say they found nine more children-- ranging in age from 4 months to 11 years old. rogers was arrested for child neglect-- but she has since been released. allen remains in jail and is facing several counts of felony torture and child abuse. ... (grant) a man accused of

shooting a deputy in sonoma county is now behind bars. police arrested 20-year-old ryan pritel yesterday. he is accused of shooting an officers at the jolly washer gas station off of highway 12. a car wash manager called police because he said one of his employees was acting strangely. when deputies got there-- they say pritel opened fire on them. a deputy shot back-- but did not hit the suspect. pritel was taken into custody right after the shooting. the deputy who was shot is expected to be ok. (catherine) on the peninsula... police in palo alto are searching for a gunman-- after a weekend shooting. it happened during a party at an apartment complex on east o-keefe street on saturday. police say an argument led to the shooting--- and a 28-year-old man was shot in the torso. there's no detailed description of the gunman at this point.. the victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition. (catherine) the daly city police department collected 200 firearms at its gun buyback event. officers

worked with gun owners one by one...and peoplewere given 100- dollars for guns.. and 200- dollars for assault rifles. each gun collected will either be recycled or destroyed. we are following tonight... tense moments on the campaign trail for a san francisco mayor candidate. people interrupted an event over the weekend where mayoral hopeful jane kim was speaking...and one man started yelling ethnic slurs. kron4's michelle kingston shows us what happened. "and now we got this skinny beep rice-eating mother beep right here."an awful racial slur caught on camera. protestors interrupted an event in san francisco this weekend -- when candidate for mayor jane kim was on stage.a man was invited up to the podium to ask kim a question but was interrupted by another man who appears to be a supporter of mayoral candidate london breed."up in here acting out for the white folks, brother. remember where you're from homie. remember where you're from bro."the video shows people shouting ethnic slurs directed toward kim ... and asking why breed was not invited to the fillmore neighborhood event. "where london breed at? why she wasn't invited to this friendly invite?"kim posted a

response on twitter sunday that said she did not take the comments personally and that "san francisco has to stand together against systematic and support the real, hard work to make san francisco a safe and diverse community for all its residents." (catherine) the number of reported sexually transmitted diseaseshas reached a new high in california... that's according to a report by the state's departmentof public health... in 2017 - there were roughly 300-thousand cases ofs-t-d's reported - including gonorrhea and early syphilis. that's a chilling 45 percent jump from five years

ago. health authorities are frustrated - pointing out thats-t-d's are preventable by consistently using condoms... some of the factors being blamed include fewer clinics and a lack of awareness.. if left untreated, the problems can cause everything from infertility to vision and hearing loss. (catherine) an oregon police department says that 'mindfulness' could be a life- saver for its officers and first responders.. (grant) it's defined as the psychological process of being in the moment.. and not letting other forces cloud your thoughts. in-depth tonight. jennifer hoff explains how one police department is teaching

mindfulness. lieutenant richard goerling/hillsboro, or police department - "ok, we'll start with sound and i will guide you through this."believe it or not, these twenty-five first responders...girling sot- "and now with a deep breath shifting our attention..."are hard at work...girling sot- "..to our hearing."...learning how to save their own lives.girling sot- "noticing pressure points."and maybe even yours. girling interview- "police officers and first responders are looking for something that can help them to navigate the stress and the trauma and to mitigate the negative heath effects of their profession. and frankly, very little that we're doing is having any impact on those things. except for mindfulness."girling sot- "let's take a moment to check in with our physical body." hillsborough police lieutenant richard girling...girling sot- "noticing any tension in our muscle groups."...leading the charge. a cop for twenty-one years, he's also the only police officer in the country certified to teach mindfulness. girling interview- "i really wrestled with, 'do i really want to be the weirdo who is going to suggest to stress to first responders that meditation is a path forward?' and i didn't.reporter- "well something must have made you say at some point, 'yeah i do.'"girling interview- "yeah you know, it's interesting. i think philosophically sometimes your destiny chooses you."he started practicing

twelve years ago...girling sot- "this event happened and i found mindfulness in it and it changed my life."...then partnered with a local instructor to create mindfulness based resilience training. and by 2014, was teaching other cops. girling interview- "for me, its this quest to constantly improve." he got certified the next year. and this month, published research with pacific university."michael christopher (professor) interview; "this is the first thing that we're aware of where we can actually demonstrate a reduction in aggressive tendencies in police officers."professor michael christopher and girling studied forty-three police officers and their spit; which contains cortisol. the body's main stress hormone. christopher interview- "it's something that helps the body, but too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing." christopher studied the cops' cortisol levels before and after they practiced mindfulness everyday for eight weeks.christopher interview- "so exciting as we saw a quicker return back to baseline which is indicative of better health."cops are twice as likely to be depressed, forty percent of them are obese and they're more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty. christopher interview- "we've had officers come up to us at the end of the training and say, 'i was about ready to leave this profession', or 'i don't think i was going to be able to make it. i was about ready to end my marriage. i

just couldn't do it. and you guys have given me some hope." christopher hopes the new found science will help shift those statistics, while the lieutenant thinks mindfulness can cultivate more compassionate cops to cut down on excessive force. girling interview- "we need fear, we need anger, we need anxiety. we need ego. but we need to regulate them in ways that allow us to show up from a place of grounded compassion and skillful equity. impact how we use force out in the field. and i would argue that when we're trained i nthis way, combined with some other good tactical training, we'll make better decisions."the cops in this class and other first responders voluntarily signed up for the session. reporter- "what was the hardest part so far?"unknown- "sitting in one place for thirty minutes at a time.it's new to a lot of them, but in some cultures, mindfulness has been around for thousands of years.unknown- "if i feel better at the end of the day or better tomorrow, maybe do it the next day and kind of build from there."last year alone, lieutenant richard girling trained at least six-hundred first that rate, what was just a fringe idea... girling sot- "at which point you can open your eyes and join the room."whole lot of girling interview- meet people where they are, and where people are here, they're suffering they're doing amazing work and in the most extreme cases, they're interested in a life line. and i have to throw that." (catherine) lt. goerling may be the first officer in the country certified to do mindfulness training. his police department is not the only one which has adopted the program. right here in the bay area the emeryville police department has its own mindfulness program. it has been around for more than 2 -years and with the full endorsement of its chief who believes, the policing profession must pay attention to the wellbeing of those in law enforcement. two-and-a-half years after he was arrested andconfessed to the crime.(pam) now, as kron four's rob fladeboe reports, adrian gonzalez has pleaded not guilty... amid a court battle over whether he should betried as an adult. 18 year old adrian "a..j." gonzalez entered a plea of not guilty monday to charges of murder with a special allegation of lying in wait, kidnapping, forcible rape and lewd acts with a child. the child was 8-year-old madyson "maddy" middleton, whose body was found in a dumpster outside her home in santa cruz in july of 2015. gonzalez was fifteen when the crimes occurred but prosecutors want him tried as an adult. recently approved prop 57 however, says a judge, not district attorneys shoud make that call. a judge has since sided with prosecutors but the defense has appealed that ruling.larry biggam/public defender ".....this kid never has a therapist or a counselor in his entire life until after these horrific crimes. in my mind the village failed and missed many

the possibility of sports betting in many states... including in california. the justices have reversed a federal law .. which had banned sports betting in most of the u.s.... catherine heenan is here with the details.. homeless residents to move out of a sprawling encampment in half moon bay is just over 12 hours away. kron4's maureen kelly reports the city is evicting them because of concerns of damage being done to an enviromentally senstve area where the encampment is located. (pkg garbage the mess it's gotten worse and worse and the environmental degradation has really increasedhere's just some of the garbage accumulating along the banks of the pilarcitos creek that the city wants to clear out of there. city officials say this encampment has been growing for decades.....and so has the amount of human waste, drug paraphanlia and illegal dumping. it's tucked behind the safeway at the strawflower village shopping center. some who shop here say they are conflicted about the eviction. i'm torn about how i feel i know the people there many of them have no place to go, they have no money they have no resources i don't know what will become of them but at the same time there's a lot of trash back there in the creek and i'm concerned about the environmental impact of it to at itwhat do you have people living in close proximity to the creek you get human waste drug paraphernalia just

regular garbage, food waste when it accumulates as much as it has now the damage can be long term so we're trying to be ahead of it remove all that garbage and to allow nature to take it's course to some degree this sign was posted friday giving those living here notice that they had 72 hours to pack up their things and move. officials say they've been working with the estimate 20 -25 homeless living here for several months. today is one of several intensive service days they've held with homeless service providers who are here to try and tempt the residents out of the camp, and into shelters and other services like outpatient treatment options. their goal is get everyone into a shelter but they know they will have some who won't do it. we don't have an emergency shelter here and that's one of the roadblocks to take emergency shelter they have to go over the hill to san mateo redwood city daly city and a lot of folks are afraid if they leave they won't be able come back david, who didn't want to give his last name says he's been living in this camp for 20 years. he says he's willing to move into a shelter but eventually wants to return to half moon bay. i'll always come back they can't get me out of this place not anytime soon anyway city officials in service providers be be out here at the encampment starting at 7 am on tuesday to try to get any last minute stragglers into services to move along. the san mateo county sheriffs department will be on hand but they're hoping they'll be able to finally clear the campsite without any law-enforcement involvement after thatthe cleanup crew is expected to move in and start clearing the debris after 8am.maureen kelly kron4 news.

trying to get access to court records in the 'golden state killer' case. joseph deangelo is suspected in a string of murders, rapes and burglaries going back decades in cities and counties in california he was in court monday as lawyers for news organizations asked a judge to unseal search and arrest warrants. so far he's been charged in 12-deaths, but may face more charges. deangelo's more charges. deangelo's attorney says unsealing the warrants could potentially taint a future jury pool and make it hard to give him a fair trial.
