you see the detour signs. deputies and state troopers trying to negotiate with that. traffic diverted and we have no idea when the situation may clear up. try to avoid the area if you can. remnants of tropical storm xawfer that brought heavy rain and gusty winds to the area. the storm system moved into our state from the south an it moved quickly throughout the d before pounding the phoenix metro area today. it was tuesday that got hit hard. so much rain that three cars were trapped by flood waters by the city streets. the cars are swamped. they had to shut down the exit ramps because of the flooding.

firefighters say a state official tried to avoid flooding. crews had to break the back window to get her out. we are told she is doing ok tonight. fast-moving winds kicked up a wall of dust that formed in the east valley in the chandler area. this is incredible. this is taken from a southwest airline flight leaving sky harbor airport. a perfect shot of the wall of dust making their way into the valley. these kimball as the dust covered the valley. these pictures from are kari lake. the top picture and the bottom picture showing the dust storm. if we can lose the banner, we can see the dust moving in around noon today in central phoenix looking south as the storm covered downtown at tempe and south mountain quickly moving through the valley. that was followed by showers. a welcome sight after all of

fountain hills. a flood advisory for that community and scottsdale until 2:00 p.m. flooded roads started to dry out this afternoon. >> reporter: apache junction is drying out after the storm earlier today dropped more than 2 inches of rain here in a span of an hour. what you're looking at is 16th avenue and this looks like a gentle stream right now. earlier, it was more than a raging river. streets and washes in apache junction turning into raging waterways tuesday as passing storms drench the city dropping at least a couple of inches of rain in a span of an hour. rain waters flooded the wash overcoming 16th avenue. the storm hit during the lunch hour. local crews and law enforcement were busy shutting down flooded streets.

i think a lot of people here in apache junction underestimate how powerful that is. >> reporter: imagine prep superstition had to cancel their football practice today. this was their path to their football field so they can't get to the football field because of this raging river rushing through here. you can see how powerful this water is. you can see the white crests on the top of the water here. a lot of water moving very >> i think she is dead. >> reporter: a handful of drivers did get into trouble with rapidly rising water on the roads. >> my co-worker is like you will be good and now look, he is at home and i'm stuck here. >> reporter: so the lesson the here don't drive through a flooded street? >> especially if you're a little car like me.

it takes 6 inches of water to make a car stall. >> people living in the east valley are bracing for more rain, especially in the emerald park area of mesa. you may remember that neighborhood got hit hard suffering severe flooding. this is along the us-60 between stapley drive and gilbert road. a retention basin got and overflowed. it left a lot of homeowners with damage. they do have equipment ready to roll and sandbags available to residents who need them. steve krafft is live right now. steve, people won't forget what happened two years ago. >> reporter: i was here in this neighborhood a couple years ago and it was bad. this is emerald park.

supposed to collect. a couple years ago, it went across the street and into homes that was bad. the city is confident it won't happen again. >> reporter: emerald park in mesa has come a long way since the time it flooded. people we net in this -- met in this area don't think they are going to suffer damage. >> i'm from louisiana so i love the >> ot too much, i feel like this is a safe area. we have lagoons here. not too concerned about it. >> reporter: we're at stapley and eighth avenue. this is not the only place in mesa where you can get sand and sandbags. there are a half dozen places around town if you need protection. >> reporter: a big dust storm rolled through the east valley,

look at these accumulations. look at fountain hills, 2.5 inches. south of the city, .5 or less than .5 of an inch. look at that at apache junction, 2.5 inches right there. you head down by maricopa, one inch there. north of phoenix, one inch. south of maricopa in the desert area, 1.5 inches. we get another look over here on look at tucson, almost 3.5 inches. a little shy of that and north of tucson 1.5 inches. you can see this stuff up in the show low area. where is it coming from? right here this is tropical depression now. xavier, the problems that xavier has caused.

assaulting his own mother. police went in the home and saw that he was holding his mother. he resisted arrest but officers were able to take him into custody. he was treated at the hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries. police arrested a second suspect in an armed robbery at a smoke shop. he will be extra arizona. he robbed a smoke shop at 91st avenue and union hills. surveillance video shows them pointing handguns at the owner. no one was hurt. more than two years after a prison inmate rapes a teacher behind bars orders the inmate to pay her $10 million.

the system came rolling in here. it will continue to push moisture in our direction. 93 degrees right now. winds out of the east at 10 miles an hour. 92 in scottsdale. 97 in glendale. it is 95 in ahwatukee. 91 in fountain hills at this time. take a look at what the going on here, there is the rotation from the low. there is the rotation from the high. there is the moisture that brings it up into the state. that is what is this morning when the moisture found its way in here. it is nice and dry at the present time. we had a lot going on. as you look down toward the tucson area, this area had 3.5 inches of rain. lots of flooding in tucson. there was debris floating down the roadway there. big storms earlier but those storms have moved out of here. even up north, or in the east we

this is from it is xavier with lots of moisture wrapped around it and continuing to move in a northerly direction. it continues to push more moisture. speaking of moisture, take a look at the dew point temperatures. right now all of them in the 60's. lots of available moisture in the state. with that around, we have the flash-flood watch for the north. we have flash-floated watch for the tucson area. we have active weather that is going to find its way in here. we are looking at that happening a couple times during the day. 97 degrees is what we had for a high today at sky harbor. you can see other temperatures across the country, once again, it was the southeast where they saw a lot of moisture. overnight, 83 with a chance of
