tried to hang herself in the back of a police transport van. she nearly died in custody. the family does not expect the woman to survive. >> reporter: family members are blaming phoenix police for the suicide attempt, which happened during a 20-mile trip. she was being transferred from one police station to another one south of downtown. i spoke with her ex-husband and he threat to herself. phoenix officers responded to a domestic violence call. >> there were four police cars in the cul-de-sac. we saw they were taking away somebody but we didn't know who it was. >> reporter: a 39-year-old woman was taken into custody on aggravated assault charges. she tried to stab her ex-husband

she came to the house to see their children and she was unstable. he says he told officers she was suicidal and she recently gotten out of the hospital after a drug overdose. also, spent time in a psych ward. the woman was alone in a back of a transport van similar to this one when police say she got out of her huffs and fashioned a noose out of her shoe laces. she attached one end to and hung herself. officers discovered the suicide attempt. >> it affects the officers who discovered her and tried their best to implement the life-saving measures. >> reporter: police say the incident is under investigation and there is not a separate transportation procedure for suicidal procedures. we're trying to learn if there
