city. live reports all day from jeff with the latest on what is happening. >> kim: talk about a big breaking news update. it takes us to this piece of video we first saw earlier in the week. this man carjacking a woman there in her driveway. turns out the man who got into that car ended up losing his life just yesterday morning here at this location on the 215. the very man in that very vehicle. police confirming this they tell us it all started at the stratosphere late wednesday night when officers say the driver flashed a gun after a short chase on the beltway and they say as a result they did fire on the man since he did flash a gun at them. the man killed is believed to be behind 1 robberies of businesses in henderson and las vegas. we spoke with a henderson homeowner yesterday. she says that she's at peace knowing that robbery suspect can't strike again.

i heard he did a line of other robberies on top of taking her car from her. so he was not a good thief. bye. >> kim: this happens to be the seventh deadly metro police shooting of the year. >> dana: as that investigation continues , the federal government has announced a major change in how these types of incidents are tracked and reported. kendall joins us in front of metro this one. >> reporter: right now the federal government does not know how many people die in police custody. that's because local law enforcement agencies do not track that. that is all about to change. the justice department announced plans for a program aimed to track deadly police shootings and other incidents of deaths that officers are involved n. moving forward agencies will begin reporting the deaths.

the amount of shootings and who the people are that get killed in them will allow authorities to make changes if needed. this is one of the more polarizing issues in the united states today in many years past. this led to one of the biggest questions related to the topic. how many police shootings are there? the answer no one knows. >> we need to know race, age, gender, and that type of thing also to try and look at wheth those issues are occurring on a repeated basis that would focus on training issues. >> reporter: the new program is set to take place starting in 2017. >> kim: thank you for that. we have another breaking news update to share with you this morning. local police say it was an argument that led to a deadly shooting on the valley's east side. you saw the story first

lake mead near hollywood. two men were fighting when a third guy comes up and shoots one of them. the two men took off together in a dark colored car. this could be gang related. a woman who lives nearby tells us she heard as many as six shots. >> you could tell. when i looked out it was man down. >> we've seen in the past a fight that goes right to deadly shooting often times has one of those gang connections. they are more appoint to rise to a level of violence very quickly. >> kim: there is surveillance footage that could help lead to the suspect. if you think you know anything that could help local authority, don't keep it to yourself, they want to hear from you. call crime stoppers. that number on your screen. >> dana: we have live pictures coming out of south lake tahoe, california. there is a wildfire as you can see on your screen.

tragedy out of new york. a six week baby girl was killed when she and her mother fell down an elevator shaft at their apartment building in brooklyn. the 21-year-old mom was pushing that baby in a stroller. the elevator doors opened so the mom pushes the stroller inside but there was no elevator there. they fell several feet down and when they hit the elevator the elevator as a result fell several feet more. the much for the baby. that baby was rushed to a nearby hospital but later pronounced dead. the elevator was out of service. they are not sure why the doors opened. the mom is expected to recover. an investigation is under way. >> dana: dodgers versus nationals, one game, winner take all. too dramatic? >> kim: no. that's how it played out.

>> krystal: we have pictures of a pretty significant fire. this is burning in the area of emerald bay. it's being called the emerald fire. this is about 20 miles drive from south lake tahoe. people in this area probably are familiar with this. according to the eldorado county sheriff's office, have you about 500 people under mandatory evacuation. and then about 500 folks under voluntary this thing is going pretty significantly. the winds have really picked up. they expect the winds to continue to pick up. so that is part of the problem here. they are really doing all they can to try and get a handle on this. no word of containment but we'll continue to track it. >> a lot of locals have camped up at emerald bay. we'll have continued reporting
