investigators in california are expected to update the investigation into last week's mass shooting today. fourteen people were killed, 21 others wounded when police say the husband and wife opened fire inside a social services center, targeting people at a holiday party. investigators are calling the attack an act of terrorism. the justice department plans to announce an investigation of the chicago police department. the calls for a d-o-j probe intensified after chicago police released a video showing

laquan mcdonald was shot 16 times last year... and the resignation of the chicago police superintendent. the justice deparment said laywers are reviewing the many requests for an investigation. the attorney general expects to make a decision very soon. it was scary moments for holiday shoppers at a california mall last night when some mistook a smash-and-grab robbery for shots fired. many people took to twitter to report that they heard shots fired. but police confrimed it was not an active shooter situation. police launched a massive response in a search for the three suspects at tyler mall in riverside, california. riverside city police said that it wasn't clear if shots were fired... but the three men went into a jewelry store and began smashing a display case in an attempt to steal the jewelry. the police search is ongoing. we now know the names of the people involved in friday's crash near yankton, south

and sent three others to the hospital. a vehicle driven by 55- year-old robin mettler of menno, south dakota was traveling southbound on highway 81 when her car crossed into the northbound lane, striking a car carrying four people. authorties say 68-year- old karol aeschlimann of hurley, 71-year-old lila rayburn of hurley and 68-year-old sandra johnson of parker died at the scene. 69-year-old dennis johnson of parker suffered serious non- life threatening injuries. mettler and her 21-year- old passenger, mary mettler, also were seriously injured a car crash in cherokee county, iowa killed one person and sent three others to the hospital yesterday. the incident happened around 1:00 p.m. on highway 59, just south of 420th st. 19-year-old, kaleigh jones, of cherokee was driving a sedan southbound, when she collided head-on with a pick-up truck heading northbound. jones was transported to cherokee regional, but died due to injuries from the crash.

year-old, shannon manwarren of primghar, iowa had injuries and was transported to cherokee regional along with passengers, 15 year-old kyleigh sanders and 15 year-old ashely portz. the cause of the collision remains under investigation. goodwill of the great plains shoe and mitten drive has been a long- standing tradition in sioux city. months of preparations went into, brininging pure joy for hundreds of kids on saturday morning. ktiv's sam curtiss takes us inside the party.

and one of the biggest reasons why the event runs so smoothly, the work of the volunteers. from deputies with the woodbury county sheriff's office to high schoolers at lawton- bronson. as well as many who volunteer because they were once helped by this event. like the lefler family. 19 brothers and sisters, they aren't all pictured, but for 15 years they've come back to help. "so many of the litte kids that are getting these things, it's not the parents, i mean the parents say thank you, but the little kids themsleves when you say merry christmas and their face lights up and you hand them something and they say thank you, it makes me have faith that these kids are being brought up right," said janet schrunk. there was also a number of people from the ktiv family helping kids lace up their new shoes. several siouxland organizations came together to give back yesterday. traci bower photography, the railroad museum, century 21, the marina inn, and

together to hold a toy drive. siouxlanders could come out to the railroad museum for a polar express themed photoshoot and donate a toy. the toys will go to the kids at the crittenton center, which is a local children's homeless shelter. their goal is to help as many kids as possible and they say it's all about the community. "to maybe get a little something could mean a whole different experience this christmas for those kids. when we come together and take care of each other that's what builds a community and that's what makes a community strong," said traci bower photography owner, traci bower. they will be colleccting toys till december 16th. you can bring them to the marina inn. one spencer, iowa tradition will soon get folks into the holiday spirit spencer holds a grand meander and holiday open house every year. the shops of downtown spencer put together live window displays. the event will starts today at 4 p-m in downtown spencer-- that's when the windows will come to life. there will also be hot chocolate and a tuba christmas performance this evening. our annual "12 days of holiday

the second most practiced sport in the world came to sioux city yesterday. the annual iowa judo state championships brought competitors from all over the state to siouxland. the championship included categories for boys and girls, adult competitors, and open rank competition. judo is a sport involving throws and pins for children and holds and joint locks for adults. judo instructors say it's more than the competition though-- it's the character building skills that really matter. ktiv's tommie clark went to the championship and spoke with several competitors.

it's a sport that's physical... competitor slamming opponent on the ground. ...but it goes beyond competitor's physicality. "it's important for them to learn the leadership skills and we really, really stress anti-bullying and not having bullying going on," said sempai judo academy owner and head instructor, jason reinders. jason reinders has competed in judo for years and now that he teaches it-- he says it's an outlet for kids. kids competing and audience clapping. "i like what it does for the kids. all the kids we have they're confident they have leadership skills they listen to their parents. we stress homework so they make sure grades are well and watching all the little kids grow up and do it, it's kind of fun," said sempai (semp-i) judo academy owner and head instructor, jason reinders. and students agree... "i help teach and i help people learn stuff," said 6-year-old, sammi reinders. competitor slamming opponent on the ground. "i like to compete in it because you can get medals and you can hang them up,"said 10-year-old, logan risser. if you're just tuning in, here's a look at the top stories in siouxland. a long-standing tradition took place on saturday. the annual goodwill of the great plplns shoe d mitten drive was held in sioux city. the event t kes months to plan. volunteers come from all ove siouxland to help distribute the winter items to kids. one of those families, the lefler's, have helped with the event for 15 years. several organizations in siouxland gave back to the community yesterday. traci bower photography, the raililad museum, century 21, the marina inn, and kay-hills came together to hold a toy drive. the toys will all be donated to the kids at a local children's homeless shelter, the crittenton center. the goal of the toy drive is to help as many kids as possible. the drive will continue through december 16th. if you want to donate, you can take toys to the marina inn. sioux city hosted the annualal

the annual goodwill of the great plains shoe and mitten drive was held in sioux city. the event takes months to plan. volunteers come from all over siouxland to help with the drive. one of those families, the lefler's, have helped with the event for 15 years. several organizations in siouxland gave back to the community yestrday. traci bower photography, the railroad museum, century 21, the marina inn, and kay-hills came together to hold a toy drive. the toys will all be donated to the kids at a local children's homeless shelter, the crittenton center. the goal of the toy drive is to help as many kids as possible. the toy drive will continue through december 16th. if you want to donate, you can take the toys to the marina inn sioux city was hosto the annual iowa judo state championships yesterday. the event brings competitors from all over the state to siouxland. the championship included categories for boys and girls, adult competitors, and open rank competition. the judo instructors say it's about more than the

the competitors learn from it that really matters. a r crash in cherokee county, iowa killed one person and sent three others to the hospital yesterday. the incident happened around 1:00 p.m. on highway 59, just south of 420th st. 19-year-old, kaleigh jones, of cherokee was driving a sedan southbound, when she collided head-on with a pick-up truck heading northbound. jones was transported to cherokee regional, but died due to injuries from the crash. the driver of the truck, 43- year-old, shannon manwarren of primghar, iowa had injuries and was transported to cherokee regional along with passengers, 15 year-old kyleigh sanders and 15 year-old ashely portz. the cause of the collision
