matt breen has the night off. we have you covered tonight with "team four" coverage. tommie clark spoke to iowa state troopers and has details on the road conditions. we start off tonight with meteorologist ben dorenbach in the weather patio. ben, how much snow have we had so far? weather ad-lib snow made for a messy monday for many as parts of eastern siouxland including carroll, iowa received 4 inches earlier this afternoon. sioux city was dropped from the winter storm warning from earlier, but one remains in effect for areas east of the metro where some out there could see around 7-10 inches of snow between today and tomorrow.

ktiv's tommie clark has been out in the icy conditions all day. and tommie, how's it looking out there? sheila, the conditions have definitely tten worse over the day. earlier, i spoke with trooper john farley who told me just how bad those road conditions are.

then i came out at 7 and then we'll all extend our shifts throughout the day," said iowa state trooper, john farley. trooper john farley says with the limited visibility, it's important to take extra precautions. headlights on. leave them on low beams. we alwawa say see and be seen," said ioio state trooper, john farley. for siouxlanders that do have to go out on those snow-covered roads." there's still a thin layer of ice that's built up with road traffic and blowing snow. so there's some important tips to keep in mind. "slow down. always expect the unexpected. take care when you're passing or approaching your snow plows. don't overestimate their speed. you might be coming up on them pretty quick. not only watching what they're doing, but watch all around you," said iowa state trooper, john farley. farley says driving is a 360-degree process and

you but what's behehd you. >> i've been out since 9 o'clock this morning and the roads will continue to impact driving conditions. so unless you really need to go somewhere, it's probably best to stay inside. sheila? thanks t tmie. wintery conditions mean icy and snowpacked roads. if you do swerve into a median or ditch and you're in a stranded situation, trooper farley says to get out your phone and call 9-1-1. make sure some emergency personnel know where you are and they will locate you as quickly as possible. and never leave your vehicle, let the emergency personnel come to you. "first of all plan your route. we know we are experiencing bad wheather here but we always encourage people make sure they check where their destination, what it's like. make sure you know where you're at on the roadway. if you're traveling down i-29 towards the omaha area make sure you know your mile markers. what exit you just passed," said iowa state patrol trooper,

if it's an extended period of snow like today-- bring a jacket, blanket, gloves, and bottled water. if you have to drive somewhere today, check the road conditions before you go. you'll find a link on our website, ktiv-dot-com. under the weather tab, scroll down to "road reports." from there you can click on iowa, nebraska, or south dakota. the community of norfolklk nebraska issued a "snow emergency" today. it will be in effect until wednesday at 5 a.m. parking is allowed on only the even side of residential streets. in a snow emergency, tickets can be issued to those who have their vehicles parked on the odd side of the street or along g e emergency snow routes. a pet alert has been issued for siouxland area pet owners. the siouxland humane society recommends keeping your animals indoors if possible and provides these tips for owners: provide shelter from the wind and precipitation. check for signs of frostbite on your pet's ears and paws.

sure it's not frozen and provide plenty of food. and finally, knock on your car's hood or honk the horn before starting your car. cats can climb up inside the engine, seeking warmth. though the weather outside is frightful, that didn't stop siouxlanders frorogetting snow. sledders climbed the hills at grandview park in sioux city, this afternoon, on a day where classes would have likely been canceled had students not already had the day off for winter break. with another week of winter break for most students, kids are doing what they can to keep themselves occupied until they have to head back to school. "this is my first time sledding this year," said sledder, vishakha kanwar. "my goal was to go sledding every single day, so that's what i'm going to try to do." with several more inches in the forecast for most of siouxland this evening, tomorrow should provide another perfect opportunity for sledders to hit

with the storm currently moving through siouxland, many people spent their monday digging out from under the snow. sioux city residents took to the cold today to dig out their cars, sidewalks, parking lots and drive ways. some had to use more than a shovel to push around all the snow. and while many don't look forward to these big snowfalls, for others, the snow provides work and a paycheck. "most of the time, we don't stop until 8, 9, 10 o' clock in the morning. we go all through the night, take shifts. there's four on our crew, but somebody will take a break and warm up for a little bit, will stop and grab a coffee or whatnot, and we get right back out there." said ashley kellen, contracted employee. kellen is part of a crew that clears snow off the e operties of a local contractor. she said when these big snowstorms hit, it's usually an all day job getting everything cleared off. and if you have some pictures of the snow storm you want to share, you can email it to us at connect at ktiv dot com or you can post it to our facebook page.

christmas tree, instead of just throwing it out, you can recycle it. the woodbury county conservation board and dorothy pecaut nature center are collecting undecorated christmas trees to be chipped for the nature center's trails. you can drop off your used tree at the nature center between now and january 10. trees should be clean with no ornaments, tinsel, lights, price tags, stands or plastic bags. trees should be placed in the lower parking lot. still to come... a wrestler honored. see how friends and family came together to celebrate the life of a high school wrestler.

snow made for a messy monday for many as parts of easternrn siouxland including carroll, iowa received 4 inches earlier this afternoon. sioux city was dropped from the winter storm warning from earlier, but one remains in effect for areas east of the metro where some out there could see around 7-10 inches of snow between today and tomorrow. you'll see these amounts gegesmaller the farthererest in e viewing area you travel, so sioux city could very well fall short of the half-foot mark of the white stuff by tuesday morning. the snow will decrease in intensity and eventually exit the viewing area tomorrow morning as winds lighten up. another disturbance could provide another snow dusting

spenenr high school to attend funeral services for senior austin roberts. during the championship round the 18-year-old collapsed and never got back up. a gofundme account was put together by the spencer tailtwisters to help austin's family with medical and funeral expenses. the account has almost $50,000. if you would like to donate there's a link in this story if you go to ktiv.com. authorities say two women died when their vehicle ran off a highway and crashed in northeast nebraska. the accident happened yesterday afternoon on u.s. highghy 75 in thurston county near pender. the nebrbrka state patrol says the vehicle rolled down an embankment. they died at the scene. the patrol identified them as 30-year-old britney mccauley, of walthill, and 24-year-old brianna wolfe, of macy. the patrol says investigators suspect alcohol use was a factor in the crash. a man wanted in iowa and south dakota has been arrested in nebraska. authorities say 19-year- old zachary frye of sioux city was

after leading authorities on a chase that began in woodbury county. dakota county deputies arrested him in south sioux. he was taken to the dakota county jail for warrants in iowa and south dakota. frye faces several charges including eluding, reckless driving and several alcohol and drug charges. frye's passenger was released as deputies say he was telling frye to stop and pulled the vehicle'e'emergency break to stop the car. a northwest iowa day care operator has been charged with child endangerment involving a toddler in her care. deputies with the sioux county sheriff's office arrested 32- year-old dianna winder last thursday at her home in maurice. authorities say her arrest stems from an investigation in november after a health care provider reported suspicious injuries to a 15-month-old boy in her care. the boy had non-life threatening head injuries. winder is charged with child endangerment causing bodily injury and serious assault.

past week after a long slide downward. the december cattle on feed report said that november placements were down 10.8% to the lowest level for the month since usda began the current data series in 1996. there are two prime causes for the low placements. cattle feeding losses have been huge this year making feedlots reluctant to buy cattle, and feeder cattle prices have plummeted in recent weeks making backgrounders reluctant to sell on a down market. brad's here -- with rose bowl news. the hawkeye defense has been excellent all season -- but they'll have their hands full with stanford's christian mccaffery. and, the hawkeye basketball team gets ready to play the number-1 team in the country. sports fource is next.

in the rose bowl. of course, football is a team game, but the iowa defense has one cardinal player on their mind. mark woodley has more from california. all season long - the iowa defense has come up big in big situations - friday - presents a new challenge against a stananrd offense led by a-p player ofofhe year - running back christian mccaffrey - who set an ncaa record with nearly 35- hundred all purpose yards he's a guy who certainly has the hawkeyes attention - "he just seems to run through arm tackles like it's no big deal," said iowa linebacker cole

"it's hard to tackle him," said iowa defensive coordinator phil parker, "it's hard to get your hands wrapped around him and make tackles. i think you've got to leverage him, and you've got to make sure you can contain him." which is something the iowa defense has been built on - strength and fundamentals - the big battle appears to be up front - which is the way the hawks say they like it - "for me that's the most fun when you're down in the trenches, big collisions in the holes," added fisher. "i think that's like true football i guess." the respect the hawks have for mccaffrey seems to be mutual from the stanford star "we know it's going to be a real physical game," said mccaffery. "there's going to be plays made all over the place. iowa's a great football team and they're here for a reason. so, we know it's going to present a lot of challenges." and in order to contain the stanford offense - the hawks say they've got to be mean - whihi apparently isn't a problem for jaleel johnson - "my family's full of mean people. it was handed down," said johnson. we will air a half-hour special called "the road to the rose bowl", on thursday. with the help from our sister station, kwwl in waterloo, we'll look back at the special 2015 season and look ahead to ththmatchup against stanford. again, see that 30-minute, hawkeye special, thursday night at 6:30. the game@kicks off at 4- 10 on friday afternoon. the hawkeyes start the big ten basketbqll season on tuesday night. iowa starts with the conference favorite, and the number-1 team in the country, michigan state. the hawkeyes went 9 and 3 in their non-conference games, while the spartans are 13 and 0. michigan state has won 14 of the last 15 meetings against iowa, including a 14-point victory in their only game last season. since beating the spartans in his first season in 2011, coach fran mccaffery has lost the last nine games against m-s-u. "we've never been able to beat michigan state but we've had some close ones, we've had some very good games with them," said senior mike gesell. "i think we're very hungry, wanting to get a win against them."
