after a mild start with el nino... winter is now blasting the midwest with extremely cold weather. people out and about in chicago kept moving and covered their faces in the subzero chill. great bear ski resort in south dakota was forced to close in dececber due to unseasonably wararweather. nonothe resort has been shut down because of temperatures a a low as negative 20- degrees. temperatures dropped to 36-degrees below zero in fosston, minnesota. a 98-year-old woman living at a senior home in minnesota died after wandering outside in the freezing cold in the middle of the night. officials at meadows lake senior living center in rochester say a nurse realized lillian pederson was not in her apartment. that's when staff members began their search and found her in the parking lot... and she was barefoot.

say pederson died on the way to the hospital. we're learning more about a house fire that took place in the 3300 block of morgan st. in sioux city last night. the blaze began shortly after 6 p.m. one witness tells ktiv that there was so much smoke, that the blue pick-up truck next door wasn't visible. here's video of the how the house looks today authorities ey returned to the home this morning to put out spot fires and classified the house as severely damaged. investigators won't be at the home until tuesday. no word just yet on what caused the fire. sioux city detective jeremy mcclure said no people were inside the home during the fire, but there were three dogs were. mcclure says all the dogs are safe and sound. stay with news 4 for the very latest. preparing for your act or applying for colleges can be a stressful time. but, there's a newer business in town that hopes to limit that stress.
