after a bald eagle was found shot in cedar county. officials with nebraska game and parks say someone found the dead eagle on sunday about three miles southeast of yankton. they say two rooster and two hen pheasants were found in a bag with the eagle that was thrown into a ditch. hunting season for rooster pheasants runs through january 31, but it's illegal to kill hen pheasants. the punishment for killing a bald eagle or even having its feathers comes at a hefty price. the person responsible faces a $250,000 fine and prison time. if you have information about the case, you're asked to call authorities. in pakistan, gunmen stormed into a university in the country's northwest today, killing students and staff, and triggering an hours-long gunbattle with police and army troops. it's over now, but at least 20 people have been killed. nbc's kelly cobiella reports.

the pakistani army says the gunbattle lasted for three hours this morning on the campus of a university in northwestern pakistan. a terrifying morning for students and staff in charsadda, that's about 20 miles from peshawar. the campus was just opening for the day when militants scaled the university walls on a very foggy morning, shooting security guards then going into classrooms and dorms. once student said he saw gunmen shooting both male and female students with automatic weapons. an assistant professor reportedly fired back, giving some of his students time to run. tributes are now going out to him on twitter. pakistani commandos say they have killed four militants. as for who was behind this, there's conflicting information. kelly cobiella/ nbc news/ london, england "a senior taliban commander has claimed responsibility, but the group's official spokesman condemns the attack, calling the killing of students un- islamic. back to you." >>

"we are raising enough money to run a winning national campaign and we're doing it without begging corporate america or millionaires for their support," said sanders. sanders also took a shot at

campaign volunteers in a car accident tuesday can help bring some civility to u-s politics. 25-year-old braden joplin died yesterday after a van carrying four staff members flipped over on an icy stretch of highway in western iowa and was struck by another vehicle. carson immediately suspended all of his campaign events for the next several days to travel from south carolina to omaha, where joplin was rushed for treatment. last night, carson said his heart goes out to joplin's family and the families of everyone involved in the accident. carson said joplin was an example of how things can get done with kindness and compassion, and not "hard hearted-ness." (s/dr. ben carson/gop presidential candidate) "if every one of us could just think about how we can make somebody else's life better -- what a fitting tribute that would be to braden." the three other passengers in the accident were treated and released from a local hospital. joplin was from midland, texas.

caucus, but this time around, he finds himself far behind the leaders. the former pennsylvania senator has been campaigning all over iowa this week, but he's polling at zero percent nationally. during his stops, santorum expresses his support for going to war against isis and his opposition to same-sex marriage. he says he hasn't lost hope, and he points out he was in a similar position before he won iowa four years ago. "i'm not anticipating a big jump in the polls like that this time around, but i think we'll see a steady climb and a little rush here at the end that will put us in the game of being in the top 4 or 5 folks that will finish here," said gop presidential candidate, rick santorum. "that's the boost we need to go on." santorum is holding town hall meetings today in sibley, rock rapids, sheldon and cherokee. the latest addition to bike trails in sioux city is causing some discussion. more than 60 people attended a public meeting last night to discuss moving forward with the trail.

extends from florence ave to the riverside pool. connecting two exsiting bike trails...making six miles of continuous trail. however...a handful of homeowners expressed concern about the trail being right behind their yards. "it would affect 10 to 12 property owners and their backyards go along the dike. we had a good turnout and were able to get some good feedback," said matt salvatore, sioux city parks and recreation director. there was a lot of positive feedback about the trail. one person in favor of the trail says it would attract more people to stay in sioux city long-term. "there's nothing like an uninterrupted trail. sidewalks are great and they are a start, but there is nothing like an uninterrupted trail," said shelby pierce, trail suppprter. the next step is to talk with those affected home owners. then the city council will vote on the proposed trail. it's sort of a non-descrip day, weatherwise. but ben says a little more snow could be coming our way. he's back with the forecast after this. here's the live view from spencer, iowa, where it's

republican presidential hopeful ted cruz is firing back at iowa governor terry branstad. on tuesday, branstad said iowans should not support cruz in the caucus because cruz opposes continued federal subsidies and other support for ethanol. he is the biggest opponent of renewable fuels and he actually introduced a bill in 2013 to immediately eliminate the renewable fuel standard. he is heavily financed by big oil. branstad made his comments at a renewable fuels conference. cruz responded on the campaign trail in new hampshire. he calls ethanol subsidies "corporate welfare" and a case of washington cronyism. sen. ted cruz/(r) presidential candidate "it's how we have gotten an 18-

supervivsor mark monson says it's important to support community improvement projects like this. "it'll be a reasonable draw. swimming pools are expensive to opperate and not all towns can have them; so i think it'll be very good," said mark monson, woodbury county supervisor. they hope to have the work on the pool done by this spring. a young football fan in north carolina just got a special gift from his hometown hero, panthers linebacker luke keese-lee. the surprise came after the boy offered kuechly a good-luck charm that he made himself. sarah-blake morgan has more.

davidson brothers company, and the pelletier company. these were huge stores. for instance, davidsons was the largest department store in iowa. all three started out small, what is called a try good store in the late nineteenth century. they developed into department stores around the turn of the twentieth century and they all had over 500 employees by the 1920's. they were big, opulent stores. we've had this exhibit going on that displays a range of fashion and memorabilia from the stores and photographs. now we have some programming to go along with it. the first will be sunday january 24th at the pierce mansion. we're having it there because thomas s martin and his wife actually purchased the pierce mansion in 1908 and the martin family lived there for the longest time of anybody else that lived there. they owned one of the big department stores. that's right. that's the connection. yes, the owners of the martin department store. we're going to talk about the
