see all that take away?it's been a messy monday morning in siouxland. light mist, drizzle and fog combined with temperatures just below freezing to make it very icy on many roadways. law enforcement responded to numerous traffic accidents in and around sioux city this morning. several schools started late today and others closed altogether. now, snow has started falling in parts of siouxland. meteorologist ben dorenbach is in the storm team four weather center with more.

this monday will present a few obstacles. the first will be dense fog which will not only cause low visibilities, but some slick roads too, so plan for a slower morning commute, especially in northern siouxland where there is a dense fog advisory in effect early this morning. the second of our issues will be a quick round of light snow that will move across the viewing area which will cause 1-3 inch snow accumulations. that will exit this evening and leave us dry for the next few days with some milder temperatures. highs will even make it into the 40s by the end of the week with another small chance of a snow shower or two this saturday. see graphics. >> freezing temperatures are slowing the removal of record snowfall from the mid-atlantic to the north east. records were broken for baltimore and in outlying areas of maryland, virginia, and new york. nbc's edward lawrence has the latest from washington.

now the story turns to storm clean up! cities dig out while dealing temperatures. daniel whiting/ uber driver "the roads are great. they're open; they're flowing, and there's a lot of and there's a lot of mess out there." at least 30 deaths are blamed on the storm. many of them came from traffic accidents.. others came from heart attacks related to shoveling snow after it fell. several roofs also collapsed from the storm governor larry hogan/ (r) maryland "getting back to business as usual is going to take a considerable amount of time." some neighborhood s still buried because plows can't get there yet. chris gephart can't even see out of his window. jersey it's flooding not snow causing problems. but in d.c. residents made the best of a cold, uncomfortable situation... this is the first time the same storm has dropped more than 19 inches on washington and new york city at the same time. it could return to normalcy. live in washington.. edward >> two families have been left an apartment building in vermillion, south dakota. the good news is nobody was injured in the first that broke out around 8:20 sunday morning. one of the apartments in the four-unt building was destroyed. two other sustained major damage. the red cross is providing food, clothing and shelter to the displaced families. the cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it is believed to be accidental. a favorite sioux city restaurant is getting ready to reopen after a fire forced it to close for several weeks. the fire started in a storage area of the back of sneaky's chicken on gordon drive in sioux city. the owner, dave ferris, says they've had to start over after smoke and flames

this month. they've gutted the entire building and are putting in a new ceiling, walls, flooring, equipment, and seating. he expects the work to be finished soon and hopes to have a grand reopening celebration sunday night. he says sneaky's should be open for business next monday. a louisiana man has died in a snowmobile crash that happened late saturday night near whiting, iowa. authorities say 48 year- old david daigle of baton rouge was going across a farm field when he hit an irrigation pivot. daigle was with a group of snowmobilers when the accident happened in a field along county road k-42 about five miles northwest of whiting. he was taken to mercy medical center where he was pronounced dead. with the iowa caucuses one week from today.. the candidates are making a final push in the hawkeye state. and there's growing buzz over someone, who -isn't- in the race: michael bloomberg, the billionaire former mayor of new york.. nbc's peter alexander reports he is now contemplating a late-run of his own.

could it be the battle of the multi-billionaires? donald trump says he'd welcome a michael boomberg bid.
