the iowa caucuses are six days away, but iowa's young people have already weighed in on the race for the white house. (matt) more than 50,000 students, in 80 counties across iowa, took part in the iowa youth presidential straw poll, today. on the democratic side, vermont senator bernie sanders bested hillary clinton and martin o'malley. sanders earned 53- percent support of students from kindergarten to 12th grade. among the republican candidates, the students favored businessman donald trump by six points over senator marco rubio, and dr. ben carson. senator ted cruz came in fourth followed by jeb bush and carly fiorina. among the students that took part were kids at sunnyside elementary school in sioux city. students signed in at the check-in booths, and then made their way to the voting booths where they chose one candidate from each party. their votes came after a week of class discussion on candidates. that's where they decided who they liked, and who they didn't. "i voted for ted cruz because i think he'd be a great president," said raeleigh cooper, a 4th grader at

"hillary clinton has experience with stuff like going to places," said sam clausen, a 3rd grader at sunnyside. "i really don't think donald trump isis going to make it cuz i think he's only there for the fame and the fortune," said jeremiah dean, a 5th grader at sunnyside. results from sunnyside's straw poll show hillary clinton as the democratic nominee, and ben carson as the republican nominee. another school taking part in the straw poll was mater dei. 8th grade students have been learning about the iowa caucus and the presidential candidates. after learning what's important when picking a candidate, the 8th grade students cast their vote for both a republican and democratic nominee. two students spoke up about their strong support for ted cruz. "he really defends the second amendment and i think he's going to have a great plan for america by defeating isis and getting out of national debt," said mater dei 8th grade student, zach uhl. "i've learned more about what these politicians are trying to do for our country and it helped me learn more about the people i felt i wasn't really going to learn from," said mater dei 8th grade student,

again, vermont senator bernie sanders and businessman donald trump topped the statewide student poll. and in case you missed it it's not just siouxland students getting into the caucus spirit. students at dallas center-grimes high school in grimes, iowa made an iowa caucus video. the students said the musical parody highlights what 2016 presidential candidates are doing to get iowans to caucus for them. to see the full video, head on over to our website and the link is inside the story. state political party leaders are making their rounds throughout the state to make sure everything is prepared for caucus day. there are about 1,700 caucuses across the state, one in each precinct. candidates continue to campaign throughout iowa to make sure they clinch their parties ticket. and chairs for both the iowa republican and democratic parties say their candidates are going into the caucus strong. "each of us are going to support a candidate of our choosing on caucus night," said dr. cody hoefert, chair of the republican party of iowa. "but at the end of the day we are going to rally and unify and rally around our nominee, cuz we

defeat hillary clinton. "we had a town hall last night in des moines and they are really pushing to the end and they're telling people you're sort of closing the deal," said dr. andy mcguire, chair of the iowa democratic party. "they're telling people why they should vote for them." both party leaders say iowa's they're expecting record turnouts. they will be working with microsoft for an application that will help report votes to des moines more quickly. dr. mcguire says there will be a telecaucus for military members to be able to vote as well. tonight, donald trump added a last-minute event, which is set for sunday night, at 6:00pm at sioux city's orpheum theatre. that makes seven c!ndidates making stopsn siouxland over the course of three days starng on friday. toee where and when those candidates are making their stops, check out this story at ktiv- dot-com. donald trump's campaign manager says trump is skipping the next republican debate. the republican candidates are set to square off in the fox news debate thursday

six people have been arrested and one person is dead in oregon. (matt) hundreds of iowa business leaders will travel to sioux city in june to attend the iowa association of business and industry's conference. (sheila) this marks the 113th annual "taking care of business" conference. it's been a decade since the last conference was held in sioux city. more than 500 business executives from around iowa will be in attendence.

an opportunity to showcase the growth of sioux city. the conference is set for june 14-th through the 16-th. a nebraska school is celebrating after winning an award. westside elementary held an assembly to celebrate its award as a national title i distinguished school, one of two in nebraska to receive the honor, which rewards schools for exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive years. "it's exciting. our students are very excited to get recognized, they work hard. the tests are very important, but they work hard all year round on every aspect of their education, so for the staff and students to be recognized is a great honor." lincoln heights elementary in scottsbluff was the other 2015 recipient in nebraska. principal baumann along with two teachers, will be traveling to houston, texas to accept the award later this week. caffeine is not as bad for our health as some experts once thought. researchers from the university of california surveyed a small group of people and found more than half had at least one

thanks for tuning in to sports fource extra. ong with mark freundndi'm brad pautsch. it was a a ry busy night in the metro area -- with action from sgt. bluff, north, west and dakota valley. we'll see seven ranked teams, including ridge view, moc-floyd valley, sioux center, pender and emerson- hubbard. ten games in all. we'll start in sioux city. an overtime loss at east knocked the bishop heelan boys out of the class 3a top ten this week. still, the crusaders -- 9 and 5 -- are 11th this week, heading into a road trip to sgt. bluff-luton. the warriors are 7-6 -- that includes a 2-point loss at heelan back in early december. sgt. bluff-luton would take control early and never let up. from the wing -- jacob shultz with the strong drive for 2. warriors led by five after one. heelan had a hardrdime finding offense e in the first half -- elijah

the south sioux city boys -- trying to break a five-game losing strea,k against 3-7 sioux falls lincoln. the patriots start strong -- dillon barrow dumps it off to evan hieber for the basket, sioux falls lincoln is up four. the cardinals keep it interesting -- silas brown pulls up and makes the short jumper, south sioux leads by two. south sioux stays on the attack, denten porter drives and banks the shot in, but the cardinals still trail by three. lincoln was able to create some separation -- nolan burchill muscles his way up and gets the basket, and the patriots beat the cardinals in a close one, 47 to 45. last season, the dakota valley boys were just 7 and 14. this season, the panthers are off to the best start in school history at 11-0 -- and ranked first in south dakota's class a. dv trying to stay hot against 2 and 13 homer. dakota valley is shooting 48
