urgent breaking news, a wildfire is burning thousands of acres. we have a crew going out right now. gina lazar is on her way. how is this going to affect us in las vegas? this is in the cajon pass. some homes have already been burned. you see on the right side of flames and black smoke f. you're in the area, if you're on your way to the area, if you know someone who is, please be very cautious of where you're going. we have physically seen on the screen cars and houses go up in flames. this is a serious time of year for southern california when it comes to wildfires. the i-15 is closed from the 215 to oak hill road.
2:01 pm
information. i'm going to toss it to our meteorologist. talk to us about why this time of year we call it the perfect storm. we're talking low humidity, we're talking the winds. >> right, and those are the main elements, very low relative humidity, southwest winds, and very, very hot temperatures, which contribute to the fire and make it very hard for firefighting efforts. now, there's a location we talked about it being in bernardino county east of los angeles. so with the pattern that we see this time of year, which is a southwesterly wind, that's the concern, because this is positioned perfectly to our southwest. it is in a place with the wind speeds that is going to move the smoke directly into our area. now, here are the valley winds as we speak. notice for the most part they're straight out of the southwest, maybe with just the exception of mccarron.
2:02 pm
henderson, southwesterly winds at 13 miles per hour. and here's the other element. not only do we have the perfect direction, but we're in the breezy category, and it will only get more breezy heading into tomorrow. sustained wind speeds of 20 miles an hour in las vegas. they won't help the situation. they're only going to bring that smoke into the valley much, much quicker, and notice that forecast for tonight. later on in the evening, we're going to see things diminish, but for thee of the afternoon and, again, tomorrow, we're going to see a very similar scenario as far as wind speeds, even a tad bit stronger. hot temperatures and very dry air. take a look at this humidity. we are bone dry here in las vegas, boulder city at 6 percent. and with the heat that's going on, the relative humidities tend to be very, very low right now, even out to that area where the fire is located.
2:03 pm
track this hour by hour. unfortunately, we're going to be tracking the smoke, and we may be getting an air quality advisory here very, very soon from clark county. back to you. >> thank you. you mentioned air quality, or the lack thereof here in southern nevada, because of these southern california wildfires. i know recently we had the pilot fire, 8,000 acres, sand fire, 38,000 acre, the blue cut fire today, this fire began around then, it's now 2:00 p.m., and here again, let's look at those live pictures, all of that smoke happening right now in the cajon pass. we see in the top right hand corner that black smoke, really sending all the signals in the world that this is a very active fire. you see white smoke oh, my goodness, you see right there, the cars, the buildings, structures going up in flames, you know, we think back to smoke inhalation, think back to
2:04 pm
that happened here on the las vegas strip, and you think about the smoke inhalation and the impact it has on a person. that a lot of times kills people versus the actual flames. if you're in this area, you need to be cautious, if you're going southbound from the i-15 to san bernardino county, they have closed the entire cajon pass. the traffic hour in southern california begins at 5:00 if not before that. to be stuck at the top of the hill, being from los angeles, and call this going up the hill, going down the hill, going up the hill is at least 45 minutes from san bernardino county. if that happens and you're stuck up there, a lot of times people who live up there have to be cautious of these situations, and they pack bags because they know if there is a fire, high snow, you won't be able to get down the cajon pass. these are people's homes that we're seeing going up
