9:28 am
don't wait, communicate. that's the message fema and the ad council are trying to get across this month because september is preparedness month. the question this morning, are you prepared if disaster strikes? here with more is the director of individual and community preparedness division for fema. good morning to you, helen. >> good morning. how are you? >> doing well. trying to get the insight on to this big campaign, because disaster can strike at any time. so how valuable is making an emergency plan? >> it is so valuable. and we really want to ask all
9:29 am
take some -- make steps, and really create a plan. sit down with your family and friends. and talk about how are we going to reconnect? how are we going to reunite if a disaster strikes? >> and that is the big campaign that's going on right now that i mentioned. tell us more about it. >> yeah. so this whole month we want folks to take the time to prepare for disaster happen in their particular area. understand what disasters could occur or are most likely to occur where they live. and where they work. there are so many things that they can do to prepare for a disaster, and we know that folks that take these steps to prepare are more likely to recover quickly if a disaster happens. so talking to your family and friends is the first step.

9:31 am
prepare ourselves for what could happen. >> yeah. and another thing that we hear from survivors of disasters is that they wish that they had taken the time to put the important documents in a safe place. so documents like insurance, banking information, even social security card, and driver's license, types of ids, those can get lost in a and survivors tell us that they really wish that they had those documents. so take the time to make those digital or put them in a fire and waterproof safe, something that -- so that those things are safe. >> and one quick note as we wrap up, is there a website we can go to for more information about everything that you talked about this morning? >> yup, ready.gov is a fantastic

9:33 am
it. >> oh, my gosh. i love it. >> tell us about why ranch. what is it all about? >> what do you have going on over there? >> actually with why ranch we are really blessed to be a comm. we have an amazing array of horses, animals, goat, ducks, chickens, where kids can come and be kids and play. our market socially challenged youth. and what this means is a child going through an issue at that time, being withdrawn, being bullied at school, maybe going through divorce or illness or a death in the family. >> i get it. animal therapy. i know that connection, that unconditional love that they get to experience. oh, my goodness. tell us about your experience with why ranch. >> absolutely.
9:34 am
my family was introduced to the ranch by another family member. it's like a little oasis. when you walk on the property the rest of the world disappears. my daughter just like she says had some challenges, emotional challenges, just lack of those skills emotional regulation and things like that. quite a few challenges in school because of that. she also had learning disabilities and some speech and communication disabilitie a real challenge. so what why ranch did for her being very reserved, very quiet, and because of her communication skills she wasn't building the social relationships that you want to see your daughter and your children build at that time. and what the ranch did was it gave her her place to call her own. it was a place for success. because the horse doesn't judge you. they don't judge how well you're speaking or how long it takes
9:35 am
and from day one, from day one, she took to the horses, large animals. and this is a child who was very afraid of large animals, and she gets her one-on-one trainer, on the horse. she get as signed aers who. and you saw the quiet reserve child in the first few visits taking that horse on. , helping with the groom, leading the horse. the first time she walked out of the stall i saw a different girl. >> walking taller. talking better. it's like her communication delays went away when she is on the ranch. there is this connection, and it was a place where she could be successful, where in other places she hadn't been in the typical world. and so we've been two years, and i can say this last year we had a very successful year in school. >> that's great. >> and at home just translated to home more responsibility with animals that she has at home.
9:36 am
at one point we were brought in as a family, as well. >> i know there are parents watching, that say it's perfect for me. but to able to bring in more kids, to continue why ranch mission, you need to have fundraisers. you have a special event happening. >> that's why we're here. >> of course. >> we have our third annual fundraiser coming up this saturday from 6:00 to 9:00. you can find all the information that you want on why ranch.org, and it's right there on the screen. but we have a ton of raffle prizes and we just confirmed big mike is going to be providing all the dinner along with chef lisa of chef at your home. so we're excited to have them. and just a wide array of bands and entertainment. it's going to be a lot of fun. >> who are some of your sponsors at the event? >> some of our sponsors are
tv-commercial
9:37 am
then we have skyline, and we also have vitamin -- i'm sorry, vitamin water. and we have a couple others, as well. we're excited. >> it's great seeing comes help you provide the awesome service. congratulations to your daughter. man, i love this. >> we're looking forward to this event. why ranch third annual roundup is this saturday, 6:00 p.m., at their ranch durango. just head to the website or call the number on your screen. children under five are free. shawn. we'll be back. i pledge allegiance, to the flag [continues in background] they're bringing drugs, they're brigning crime, they're rapists...

9:41 am
answered. >> that's right. we are hosting two live events here in las vegas valley. the first is on thursday, september 15th, at 3:00 p.m. at the golf club. and we have another one the following day, september 16th, at 9:00 a.m. at the community center. >> and what can people expect from these convenients? >> we will give a good overview of your medicare options. we have had good participation at these events locally and nationally. over 97% of the people that have attended the events in the past have said their education an understanding of medicare has improved by attending the event. >> i would hope so. so how do seniors and baby boomers participate? >> well, you can attend the live events or there is -- there are ways to get educated year round. medicare made clear.com is a good education tool online. medicare.gov. or go on and learn more
9:42 am
nmew.com. >> it's great, because people have questions and we're getting out there, there are several ways you can get this information. some people might prefer to come down and do it in person. if you go online, to slick national medicare education week, why was this created? >> well, we created that, there has been a lot of confusion about the medicare program. it's a great program but there is a lot of components to it. we've done surveys of those that are eligible fo one in five find the program confusing. and about 40% of them say their understanding is fair or poor. >> wow. >> and so those aging into medicare actually their understanding is even worse. 70% say that their understanding of the program is fair or poor. >> wow. so baby boomer the term i guess considers -- the group of people that were born after world war ii. >> right. >> big influx, because war is
9:43 am
and that's in -- we have the big influx of people that are entering now. to have this week be a month before open enrollment it seems by the time it's ending is when people are starting to realize what's going on. but do it a month ahead of time gets them ready to go. >> we want them to be prepared and educated. there are over 56 million medicare eligibles today and over 10,000 baby boomers aging in every day. >> every day? >> every day. >> isn't that amazing? 10,000th birthdays a year. >> every day. >> a lot of people. >> a lot of boomers. >> so there are different parts. you always see the commercials. what do all the parts mean? >> well, there are a lot of parts. there are four primary parts. they're typically referred to as the a, b, c of medicare. part a covers inpatient hospital and skilled nursing.
9:44 am
hospital, also some preventive care. medicare part c is known as medicare advantage. that combines the benefits of part a and part b into one plan. often includes prescription drug coverage. medicare advantage plans are offered through private insurance companies, and we enroll those annually. now, with medicare advantage plans often you'll get aings the benefits not a rielable under original medicare. fitness, examples of those. >> excellent. >> through medicare advantage plan you're able to are some of your care coordinated to produce better outcomes and save money. then there is medicare part d, your prescription drug coverage. and finally, there are medical supplement or immediate i gap plans, and those can cover some of the governments not covered under original. >> some things fall through the cracks. >> yes. >> what should seniors do to compare their options like how
9:45 am
>> there are a lot of options they have. really it's important that you evaluate the options each year. it is not a one size fits all program. so each person is going to have a different fit with a different program. so it's important each year, you can ask yourself a few questions to make sure you have the best coverage for you individually. so look at your plan. look at the premium, copays or coinsurance and look and see if that fits your budget. if your plan has a network, make sure your doctors or hospitals also, does your plan offer some of those additional benefits, like fitness or dental or vision that may be important to you. and then finally, if you're taking prescription drugs, make sure they're in your plan formula and that the pharmacies they have are convenient to you. >> excellent. very powerful information. didn't having you. thank you so much. >> thank you for sharing the
