good evening. we saw a beautiful, sunny day with temperatures reaching 71 degrees in reno today... but don't let all the sunshine fool you... winter isn't over yet. that's right. a high wind warning goes into effect in hours.. and we may even see snowfall as early as thursday. we begin tonight with storm watch coverage. chief meteorologist mike alger is in the weather center with the details. strong winds associated with a cold front have kicked off a high wind warning for western nevada, in effect throughout the day wednesday. those winds will create an initial rain shadow for the

additional signs that include flashing lights to warn drivers there used to be nine of these kind of warning signs.. but now there are 34. ndot hopes this will make it easier for drivers to recognize the wind restrictions and plan their travels accordingly. meg ragonese- ndot pio-either delay their travel or they can reroute themselves, we actually have positioned these signs so that they are well in advance of particular exits so if drivers need to take a certain exit prior to going through the valley, they can do that and reroute themselves." ndot say this system is just another way they are enhancing safety for everyone traveling between reno and carson city. today governor sandoval joined 16 other governors... who are voicing their commitment to renewable energy. the bipartisan group... signed onto the accord as a promise to promote clean energy, clean transportation... and a more modern electrical grid. of course... this has been a hot

policy changes which have pushed many rooftop solar companies out of the state. governor sandoval briefly addressed that issue on the conference call today. sandoval: "yes, there was a decision recently by our public utilities commission. it wasn't everything i wanted, but i'm confident that it will be a topic that will be discussed throughout the rest of this year and into our legislative session next year." the governor has come out in favor of grandfathering-in existing solar customers... so they wouldn't be affected by the new, higher rates. but the public utilities commission decided against that last week. the first meeting for the group of governors has not been set yet. turning to the crime beat.. sparks police have a man in custody who they say fired shots from within a home early this morning. police responded to the three thousand block of keogh drive on a report of shots fired inside a home where two teenage girls and a woman were inside. a fourth woman was able to

swat teams surrounded the home and negotiated with the suspect, who eventually surrendered. the women were not hurt. gordon mellinger is charged with two counts of child neglect and one count of discharging a firearm into a structure. reno police have arrested a man for murder.. accused of stabbing a man to death in an apartment near midtown. 32 year old michael robbins was arrested sunday night for driving a stolen car.. officers then received information that he had possibly stabbed a man in an apartment. police responded to the apartment in the 100 block of malone lane... where they found a man who had been killed. he has been identified as 43 year old patrick drahos. detectives interviewed robbins... who police say admitted to the killing. he was arrested last night and charged with open murder with a deadly weapon. the identity of the victim has not been released. the carson city sheriff's office is asking for help finding a woman who went missing last summer. 40-year-old deanna rebelez was last seen when she was released

july. she's five foot 3... about 135 pounds and also goes by deanna byars. if you know where she is call carson city deputies at 283- 7854. turning to health watch now.. medical school is definitely an intense experience... and today a group of community members got to see just how much hard work goes into being a med student. about a dozen people from local businesses, hospitals and the university participated in 'project medical education nevada'. amanda ketchledge joins us live in the newsroom after attending the event today. amanda, what's the purpose of this project? landon-- this day-long activity gave participants a chance to experience "hands-on" what four years of medical school entails. from the application process, to shadowing professors with simulated patients... manniquin coughing and blinking

skin and..... "some classroom instruction. they do some dissection down in the anatomy lab." the participants found out how complicated it is for students learning how to become doctors. bethany sexton: "it's been a really intense day, but they go through four years of it." bethany sexton works for renown health and actually wanted to become a doctor in the past, but she took the business route of health care instead. so this opportunity gave her a look at what the students do everyday...like how they deliver bad news to a patient. "i know that that could be really disappointing. because i'm sure you were initially thinking it was going to be a small incision." bethany sexton: "even though it was a simulated patient, it was kind of heart wrenching to be able to have to tell somebody that they had had complications from a surgery. and so it really gives me new appreciation for what our doctors have to go through everyday." the school of medicine also tells us that this program was designed to create more of an understanding for leaders in the community, so they make insightful decisions about funding sources for medical

today a judge ordered apple to help the f-b-i unlock a cell phone owned by one of the people responsible for the san bernardino terror attack. the i-phone in question was used by syed rizwan farook. he and his wife opened fire at a holiday party in san bernardino last december, killing 14 people. the two were later killed in a shoot-out with police. the f-b-i has said it has tried to unlock the phone for two months without success. the judge's order requires apple to disable a feature that wipes the phone's data after 10 incorrect password attempts. that would let f-b-i experts try millions of password combinations without threatening the data. now.. apple has said it cannot unlock newer i-phones for law enforcement. that's because the phones are engineered in such a way that apple does not have a key to break the encryption. but the judge's order in this case is not asking apple to break the encryption.
