edan weishahan.: "if you can think of wind kind of like moving through like water does they can get funneled through those canyons and if you can think about funneling water through a smaller opening then it moves a lot faster." wind is also typically stronger higher up in the atmosphere towards the jestream. edan weishahn: "sometimes portions of that jet can reach the ridge lines and that's when we'll see peak wind gusts at slide mountain." making it feel even colder. the wind chill index gives you the feel like temperature. a cold day with gusty winds will probably feel worse on your skin than say a calm day with the same afternoon high temperature. wind plays a huge role in the forecast. a change in wind direction and speed can change the forecast completly. especially in reno, where the sierra is close by. while reno has seen wind gusts over seventy miles per hour it is not uncommon for winds to top one hundred miles per hour along the sierra crest.

schilling, channel two news. in crime beat tonight - the reno police department is helping residents, owners and managers of rental properties to keep illegal activities to a minimum. it's part of the reno crime free multi-housing program. paul nelson joins us live at the meadowood apartments -- just one complex that is benefiting from the program. paul -- what types of things has management done to make those apartments safer? for one thing -- they spent about two years improving the lighting, kristen. they've also trimmed bushes and weeded out problem tenants. all with the help of the reno police department. "the first line of defense for your good tenants is going to be you." cops working with property owners and managers. that's what this program is all about. the eight-hour class is required for any rental property with 40 units or more. lopez "any condos, any hotels, motels, apartments, that sort of thing." the second phase is making physical improvements to the

police officers. things like landscaping, lighting, windows and security. karla "not only do we work there but we want everybody to feel safe, our tenants to feel safe. we don't want riffraff coming in and out. we want to make sure the tenants feel comfortable." every staff member of the meadowood apartments will eventually go through this class -- learning what can help eliminate crime. management here says the quality of residents is the most important factor. cindy "we have very stringent move-in policy qualifications. if you don't match them, you don't get in." the meadowood apartments have 500 residents -- and sands says they have noticed quite an improvement in the past few years. calls for service are down about 75-percent and questionable tenants have been evicted. cindy "this is a very friendly environment. we like to think of it as a community. we have a lot of children living here and i would now want to not have a safe place to have children and families." that's why officers say this is time well spent -- saying a
