i'm tara moriarty live in san francisco where thousands of people are expected to attend a funeral for two fallen firefighters. traffic in and arounds city will be effected by the funeral. we will let you know when and where. another act of violence overnight near the san jose college campus that was a scene of a double murder suicide. it's all ahead on the ktvu morning news.

good morning,. thank you for waking up with this on this friday, june 10th i'm pam cook. what will the weekend weather be like? >> it will be cooler. we had our warmup yesterday for some. not so much at the coast. we had low to mid 80s inland. today there is a pretty good sea breeze already. west 21 there was hardly anything. so 60s, low 70s upper 70s and a few 80s but you have to go pretty far inland. >> thank you, steve. it's a day of mourning in san francisco. thousands of people are expected to attend today's funeral for two fallen firefighters. ktvu tara moriarty joins us now from st. mary's cathedral where final preparations are under way. >> reporter: good morning, the funeral mass is set to start at 2:30 this afternoon firefighters from all over the country are expected to attend.

last night there was a rosary here at st. mary's cathedral. hundreds of people showed up. in the hour before the wake the two fallen firefighters passed by their fire house number 26 for the last time. before they were firefighters they were vinny and tony. his first rescue may have come as a child when his brother got stuck in the mud. >> he kept trying to pull me out. i'm like there's the fire station right there. >> reporter: all week people have been bringing flowers and cards to station 26. the last time the city lost more than one firefighter to a single call was hotel fire in 1946. this time, a house fire that seemed manageable blew up on them. now it will be a full catholic mass at today's double funeral. there are several people

speaking so it won't be likely wrapping up until 3:00 this afternoon. there will be quite a few street closures. sal castaneda is joining us right now and he will tell us how traffic will be impacted. >> today's firefighter funeral is expected to have a big impact on transportation in san francisco. following the funeral, a mile long motorcade will make its way through the city and head out for a private burial at holly cross cemetery. southbound 280 will be shut down to the ceremony boulevard exit during this time. the closures are expected to be in place from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.. the procession will also slow muni service. here's a list of the routs or delays that should be effected. f market, j church, 5 fulton,

21 hayes, 31 balboa, 38 geary. we will be seeing quite an impact for traffic and muni service because of this funeral. one of the things i want to mention is if you want to get there without taking your car we strongly recommend that, i think the 38 geary is still the best way. at 4:33 let's go back to the desk. firefighters from across the country are attending today's memorial service at mr. mary's cathedral. ktvu was there when one station arrived from california. he has direct ties to both the san francisco fire department and one of the departments fallen heros. >> i actually worked for san francisco fire department. i got hired in 2001. i was activated by the air

force reserve where i did a year and a half of time there. when i came out i got back to work with the san francisco fire department. one of my first stations was station 26 with lieutenant perez. >> coming up at 5:00 jade hernandez will have more on the visiting firefighters. she also tells us how bay area firefighters outside of san francisco are helping out. ktvu will provide live coverage of today's funeral that begins at 12:30 right after ktvu channel 2 news at noon. we will stream that service live on our website ktvu.com. overnight san francisco firefighters raced to a scene of a late night apartment fire. that started shortly after 11:00 on mcklister right near the civic center. there are no reports of any injuries. the fire did cause major damage to the apartment building. investigators are still look for the cause. this morning police in

south bay are investigating a stabbing near san jose university. three people were injured in last nights attack on mcdonald's restaurant. all three victims were rushed to the hospital. at this point there is no word on the extent of their injuries and police are still looking for suspects. last nights stabbing attack took place exactly one month after the double murder suicide at a san jose state parking garage. we are also learning this morning that oakland police are still having radio problems despite the department's new communication system. the city unvailed the system earlier this week. it's supposed to provide a clear and reliable line of communication nearly everywhere in oakland. overnight we heard of one breakdown in the system. a police dispatcher confirmed the problem to us but would not provide further details. a stunning new revelation is to fuel the controversy tied to that tragic drowning at an

alameda city beach. several firefighters stood and watch as a suicidal man drowned. they blamed budget cuts saying his crew could not go into the water because the department did not have funding for water rescue training. the times has obtained several records saying that they did have money for funding but they did not use its. about 400 roosters had to be euthanized after being confiscated from a property just east of petaluma. officers say the owner of the property was suspected child momless tour -- child molester who excited suicide last -- who committed suicide last night. all lanes of highway 880 have reopened this morning that is after a crash involving

80s. already a decent sea breeze in place. it doesn't take much this time of year. in one week we have gone from rain to warmer to cooler. south, southeast 14 santa rosa. that see cool direction this time of year. west 21 at sfo. southwest from vacaville out to sacramento. those are all good indicators of a cooling pattern. look at santa rosa that is cool for this time of year. concord, livermore, fairfield. one system there and then a stronger one will plow in. it won't bring us rain or anything. we will be on the southern edge of it. that will continue the cooling into sunday. that is a strong system for this time of year. we know well about strong systems. one week ago we were talking about it. today and tomorrow 60s and 70s. area educational were around 83- 84 yesterday will come back into the 70s. low clouds sunny and breezy at

good morning, more low clouds fog actually a stronger sea breeze this morning. we warmed up a little bit yesterday. we will cool it down. still some 80s and pretty far inland. fire crews in arizona are getting some help as winds weaken on the fire lines. the second largest wild fire in state history is 5% contained. the flames have burned more than 600 square miles and destroyed more than 20 homes. hundreds of homes are still threatened but we hear that if the light winds continue, hundreds of people that have been evacuated may be able to

return home tomorrow. back here in the bay area this morning a group of activists will announce their plans for responding to the upcoming release of the former bart police officer convicted of killing oscar grant. the coalition for justice has scheduled a press conference for 9:00 this morning. they are organizing demonstrations in oakland on sunday. former bart police officer johannes mehserle is expected to be released tomorrow. chauncey bailey faces life in prison without the possibility of patrol. they found yusuf bey iv guilty of ordering bailey's murder. at the time of the death bailey was working on a story of their financial problems. >> i have goose bumps right

now. i had a good feeling justice would be served. >> bey was also found guilty of two other killings. mackey of one other killing. they will return to court for sentencing on july 8th. because of the multiple murder convictions they do face a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of patrol. we are getting a better idea of what happened the day a man fired a gun at a big five star in watsonville. >> he's walking back toward me. oh my god he just fired. he just fired. >> shots fired. >> he just fired. he's walking back toward me. >> what is he shooting at? >> i don't know. i just got underneath the desk. >> police showed up moments later and shot and killed 22- year-old robin meranda the man with the gun. he padlocked the doors, took the gun from a display case and

fired several shots. investigators say it's unclear what lead to the violence. another vigil is planned tonight for missing nursing student michelle le. >> we know you are out there. we will find you and we will bring you home. >> more than 100 people attended the vigil last night. another one will be held tonight in san diego where the 26-year-old grew up. she was last seen may 27th. her locked suv was found a day later a half a mile away. police believe le was murdered but her family is not giving up hope. >> hopefully we can find michelle alive. please come home. we all miss you. >> police say they found blood evidence at kizer where they believe le may have been

killed. they are investigating forensic evidence results sometime next week. police have identified several persons of interests but no arrests have been made. the reward is up to $65,000. an independent panel says construction work to replace a sewer pipe in san bruno was the most likely cause of increased stress of a nearby pg&e gas line that exploded. 16 months before it exploded a new pipeline was installed on earl avenue. that was the site of the september 9th explosion. the report from the independent panel reviewing the pipeline explosion says the ground shaking from that sewer work could have damaged # the pg&e gas line. the panel criticized pg&e for not prop everily inspecting the pipeline during the sewer work. nearly three months after

the tsunami and santa cruz boat harbor they are still waiting to get their boats repaired. the mercury news report there is are not facilities to handle all the repairs. a boat yard can only handle a few boats at a time and repairs could take months. also this morning toyota announced it expects its annual profits to drop 31%. they base that number on a robust recovery from the march earthquake and tsunami. they did not offer a number earlier because they were waiting on information from their parts. california's biggest labor union is creating a political action committee that will donate only to republican candidates. the union says it wants to increase the number of moderates of republicans in sacramento that will work with

democrats to solve the state budget problems. union officials say the idea is in response to the demand of its republican members. jury deliberations begin this morning in the retrial of former illinois governor rob blagojevich. he faces 20 counts including extortion and bribery. his first trial ended in a hung jury. the constituents of new york congressman anthony weiner apparently want him to stay in office. a new poll shows 66% of registered voters think he should not step down. only a third believe he should go. despite admitting sexting picks they say he will not resign. new information about that

within the past few hours we learned more about the deadly e. coli outbreak that killed 29 people and sickened 3,000 others in europe. health officials say the outbreak has been tied to german grown sprouts. no tests have been done yet but the pattern of the outbreak has allowed them to pinpoint the source. because of the outbreak growers have been forced to throw away cases of produce. one month after two students were shot and killed in a parking garage at san jose state, the university says it is making changes to its safety

alert system. many criticize the university for waiting 90 minutes after the shooting before sending out the first emergency alert. the university says there was a delay because police were sending the alerts from their phones. the school says they will now use a laptop to send alerts. >> we need to provide information. 25-year-old cindy and 26- year-old thomas williams were found in a parking garage on may tenth. your iphone won't be helping you avoid dui check points anymore. apple is changing the guidelines for its app store and now explicitly bans apps which list check points. earlier this year four u.s. senators isn't letters to apple asking them to stop selling the

apps. the maker blackberry pulled the apps a short time later. google still offers those apps. nasa plans to explore climate change. at 7:20 this morning the space agency has a five minute window to launch the satellite. the three year mission exams the planet through ocean currents. president obama wants nasa to focus more on science with tangible benefits such as protecting the environment. it's coming up on 5:00 we want to go back to sal. any problems? >> eastbound 80 at gill man we saw last time police responding and then we found out that there is a crash. it's right there at the top of your screen. you see the police and the fire lights there. it's east 80 at gillman. now it's not causing a huge delay but it is definitely there. so we saw them responding and they are there on gillman north of the gillman exit. as i read here it looks like

these are all cooler and stronger than yesterday. you arer 40s -- upper 40s and low 50s. mid 50s with the cloud cover. one system moving in but a strong one will barrel in from the pacific northwest. the end result will be an increase in the low cloud deck and fog and a cooler pattern. 60s and 70s and 50s on the coast. low clouds today will give way to sunshine and breezy. burnoff for some. cooler today fog will remain on the coast. a few low 80s. a lot of 70s between and 60s with some 50s on the coast as we ramp up that sea breeze. fog, sun, cooler. we continue to theme sat into sunday. >> thank you, steve. the fallen firefighters in san francisco will be laid to rest today. the big names paying their respects at the ceremony. fire crews from around the country are here in the bay area but many won't be attending the funeral. we'll tell you what they will
