>> reporter: the fire did reach the summit of mount diablo and up there are communications towers and buildings, including the beacon. when the fire reached the summit there were firefighters up there and they were able to protect those structures. on the south side of mount diablo, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. >> and more details now. long time residents of clayton may remember a lightning sparked wildfire on mount diablo in august of 1977. it was the last major fire to burn on mount diablo. these pictures were taken the day after the fire started. it burned 6,000 acres in a few days along the north side of mount diablo. >> the weather is changes around the mount diablo, our chief meteorologist bill martin is live with how that is helping. >> thicks are changing. -- things are changing. mount diablo, temperatures in

>> reporter: we are at what is base camp. a small village within this large military reserve. i want to show you what is going on. this is the staging area for the firefighters and local and state agencies battling the morgan tire. we have crews from cal fire as well as east bay parks, livermore, pleasanton, almedia, oakland, richmond along with many others. it is a very busy place. they are on 24 hour shifts. they come off, 24 hours rest, they go back. 700 firefighters trying to knock down the flames and it is a challenging fight however crews are making progress. lot of people have been forced from their homes. nervous homeowners keeping an eye on the flames. our ktvu's cara liu spoke with people forced from their homes. she is in clayton with more on how they are doing.

>> reporter: julie, as you said an anxious time for those asked to evacuate. there are red cross volunteers standing by. they have been asked to keep the shelter open another two days. there are beds and meals here at the community library that are available to the evacuees but only five people checked in last night. another man checked in today after staying with a friend for the first night. he had 2 minutes yesterday afternoon to grab his wallet and phone before being forced to leave his home. >> it is kind of a downer, you know. come to a nice, quiet town, trying to get away, next thing you know, my home might be burning. that is awful. feel sorry for everybody up there right now. >> reporter: the evacuations

cal fire called for are oak hill lane, curry canyon, trail ride road, uppertrail road and lower trail road and east trail road, curry lane and point are also under evacuations. firefighters say if you are asked to evacuate, whether it is mantory or voluntary -- mandatory or volunteer, please do so right away, it helps to get theirquirement into the areas without -- their equipment into the areas without worrying about getting in the way of people. cara liu, ktvu channel 2 news. >> reporter: we are back here live. we have been watching the smoke coming off the ridge of mount diablo all afternoon and evening last night. i want to show you what it looks like right now. looks like they are making progress knocking down the smoke that has been going since yesterday afternoon when it

started at 1:15 p.m. on the east side. that is the ridge looking towards mount diablo. as you can see there smoke is basically gone, just haze in the air. they have been waiting for signs of progress. up till this point it has been making people worried. john fowler talked with homeowners about what it is like wondering if they could be next. john? >> reporter: i am on a ridge just east of black hawk. we are up here because this is where the wind is blowing and the wind has pushed down that smoke. you can see it laying flat down here. just like bill said it would do. that pushed a stream of ash all across here. >> kind of scary. waiting to hear are we going anywhere? should we stay? >> reporter: smoke erupted from the southern ridge of mount

diablo. the fire on the move. we found people climbing this fire trail to get a better view. >> all different color smokes. black whirl winds going up hundreds of feet. the flames reached up to 50 feet. >> reporter: officials warn people with breathing problems to stay inside. he said he and his dogs were feeling it. >> getting harder to breathe. little unpleasant in the air. >> reporter: she said the air smells like camp fire. stronger. particulates fall to the ground. the size, the chemical content can irritate healthy lungs. >> there is a lot of black smoke. lots of, um, helicopters and airplanes and crazy sight to see. >> reporter: crazy indeed and

we have continuing coverage on violence in san jose over the weekend. police are investigating 7 shootings or stabbings. the attacks left three people dead. ktvu's robert handa has been talking to people in the neighborhoods where the violence happened and police and they told you where they are focusing now? >> reporter: yes. we are in san jose on the property of san jose state university. this is where neighbors discovered a dead body sunday and it capped a violent weekend that has investigators working

around the clock. >> reporter: people living near the san jose state university tennis courts are dazed today after spending yesterday stuck inside their homes while mese conducted a possible homicide investigation. the man who discovered a body inside a jeep and called 911 said it was traumat frequent him and his family -- traumatic for him and his family. >> crazy. nice neighborhood. we can't trust no one, i guess. . >> reporter: jarring? >> yes. especially seeing the body in front of your eyes. >> i didn't see the face or nothing but it was like gave me the chills. >> reporter: friday night a man was shot and killed in san jose. the 35th homicide. and then saturday night a 39-

year-old woman was stabbed to death. san jose's 36th homicide. police arrested a suspect in each of the cases. the department says there were two shootings and two stabbings that didn't result in any deaths. police plan to maintain their summer time staffing. >> our officers will focus on certain areas where we are seeing the more prevalent gang issues. >> reporter: the extra staffing and over time is drawing criticism from the police officer's union. they plan to review a plan tomorrow. live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. >> more details on the problems facing san jose and crime. more police officers are leaving the job than joining the force. we have been reporting on the approval to add 200 officers in the next four years. but a new study says the number of officers leaving the

department could outnumber new hires. some are retiring and many are leaving to join police departments in other cities. an idea could diffuse the use of peps in syria. secretary of state john kerry said they could avoid a confrontation by handing over all of their chemical weapons. he said russia would support efforts to hand syria's chemical weapons over to international control and destroy them. the white house says it is studying the idea. president obama plans to speak to the nation tomorrow night to lay out his grace a military strike -- case for a military strike against syria. in his interview with cnn the president responded to the use russia would back the

mystery solved. a man who was found unconscious in san francisco has been identified. the man was found early saturday morning with head injuries suggesting some kind of fall. he had no i.d. on him. police released this pictures and last night a relative came forward. the hospital hasn't released his name. a second diver has died from an accident. an 18-year-old from oakland drowned friday when he was trying to help a friend struggling in the water and today we learned another driver drowned trying to recover a remote role used in the search -- control used in the search.

complete bay area news coverage continues right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00 p.m. turning now to the out of control fire in contra costa county on mount diablo. it has quadrupled in size from yesterday. >> the morgan fire burned 3700 acres of dry brush on the eastern side of mount diablo. also forced the evacuation of 100 homes and as of now that fire is only 20% contained. >> julie haener is near the fire. >> and joins us now from the fire command center with new information on the fire. >> reporter: fire crews are making progress knocking down

fires. how hard is that for fire personnel? >> that is one of it things we train for. we take pride in our job so it has been taxing for the firefighters. one of the biggest -- most common thing we say, it take as toll on our families. and then physically we train for it all year long. we are training, when you see firefighters running or working out, they are training just for this time of an event. we are ready all year long for something like this to happen. the last couple months we have been seeing that. >> reporter: the unusually dry season and it creates -- a lot of vegetation, it is hard to get to, and the fuel that it provides, makes the fire grow, what is that like compared to when it is not so dry? >> i have been on sixb mage --

six major fires in season and we are seeing more atrattic fiver behavior, it is more unpredictable. it presents more of a challenge for the firefighters on the line. they have to be more aware of their surroundings. they have to communicate a lot better to the crews around them and one thing we do is we bring in a fire behavior specialist and a weather specialist. and so they are always reporting back to us what the fire is doing, the conditions we are seeing on the field, what we are to expect with the weather and since i got here at 1:00 p.m. the wind picked up here in base camp. that presents another aspect of difficulty for the firefighters on the ground. >> reporter: we appreciate your time. good luck tonight. >> thank you. >> reporter: a long night for firefighters out there and we are hearing another helicopter

for him it is a little different. >> they are sensitive animals. you think of a horse being strong but they are afraid of fire. >> reporter: the horses have been rescued once from being abandon now they are working to get them out of harm's way. >> we are going to heather farm. >> reporter: heather farm is taking in evacuated horses, as many as 20 horses can call this a temporary home. >> 3, 400 yards. on the ridge above us. we keep our horses out there. you could feel the heat. >> reporter: it is not just domesticated animals. >> the unfortunate part of any fire, lot of animals will get hit hard. >> reporter: he said fire is a formal part of the cycle on

is and isn't could be tricky. so much of the area is rural. so today we used news chopper 2 to give us an aerial tour of the area beginning with the fire started. you see right there on the mountains northeast side. >> reporter: news chopper 2 starts on mount diablo, a day after the fire started. if you have been to mount diablo you have been here, the observation deck which has been spared. today flames game within 50 feet. we saw this huge plume of smoke drifting over the communities. some homes sit empty because of evacuation orders and communities to the east are being watched closely. on the west side you can see nothing burned. this area has high end homes.

fire investigators are looking into the cause of a fire at a home today. the scene was chaotic as emergency responders rescued three people trapped inside. 7 people in all were injured. ktvu's ann rubin is live from the scene after talking to the hero whose risked their lives to save others. >> reporter: this was the scene where firefighters and police used creative thinking to rescue the family trapped inside. normally a fire truck would have helped, today it was a police cruiser. >> reporter: they are expected to survive. >> they are in icu.

they have smoke inhalation. >> reporter: incredible considering the scene as flames shot into the sky. meltal security bars prevented rescuers from going inside so they turned to the window. >> the male was in the window, too weak to get out. he had minutes. >> the window was too low for a latter and that is where he came in. he drove his cruiser over the curb and against the house. you can see the cents on the hood. -- the dents on the hood. >> the opportunity was there and there was nothing else to use. the car seemed like a good idea. >> we were able to pull the first victim out by just man power on to the police cruiser. >> reporter: two other victims were carried outas well and rushed to the hospital a-- out as well and rushed to the

communities on alert. i am. hello. i am frank somerville. >> and i am gasia mikaelian. >> fire crews are preparing for a second night battling flames. 3700 acres burned, 20% contained and 100 homes remain threatened. julie haener is live at the fire command post. >> reporter: this is the base camp. the staging area for the 700 plus firefighters who are out there battling the flames on mount diablo. it is a very busy place and it will be all night long. this is the command center, the communication center. officials want to make sure they have everything set up. the tools in place to help the crews in the field communicate with one another and knock down the flames. when the crews come off the mountain they are on 24 hour shifts, battling for 24
