that busy california airport. good evening, i'm gasia mikaelian. >> and i'm frank somerville. we received an update from the airport, the police and the mayor of los angeles. >> we have team coverage for you tonight. david stevenson is live at sfo with the impact from today's shooting here at home. let's begin with julie haener. >> she's in the news room and has been monitoring the situation in los angeles. >> reporter: right now parts of lax are starting to reopen. that was announced in a news conference about 45 minutes ago. we also know the one person who was killed in today's attack was a tsa agent. the first ever to be killed in the line of duty. two other people were wounded, at least one of them is also a tsa screener. witnesses say everything was normal inside the terminal this morning when suddenly they heard gunfire. >> i heard a couple of popping noises. i turned to look. sounded like somebody banging on something. there was a stampede of people. >> reporter: airport police say

a gunman walked up to the tsa screening area, pulled an assault rifle from a bag and began shooting. >> he proceeded up into the screening area. where tsa screeners are and continued shooting and went past the screeners, back into the airport itself. >> reporter: the tsa says the gunfire killed one screener. airport police officers shot and wounded the gunman and took him into custody. panicked passengers started screaming, looking for places to hide. >> security team opened up the door. we all piled out on to the tarmac. just kind of hid under the plane. >> probably the worst experience i've ever been in in my life. most terrifying. >> reporter: the gunman is 23- year-old paul ciancia. he has an address in los angeles and his family lives in new jersey. he had material on him expressingan
