>> reporter: two young men have life-threatening injuries this morning after the chp says they were struck by an oncoming car in millbrae. what the two men were doing on the freeway -- coming up. dead animal parts left in front of vegan restaurants. the gruesome discovery sparking serious concerns in the east bay. first black mold. now san francisco firefighters on treasure island are dealing with rats. we've obtained a memo and will have reaction live from the san francisco fire department. her story about her right to die, it started a national debate how brittany maynard's husband is bringing that issue to center stage today at the state capitol. now. a horrible crash in millbrae early this morning has two people fighting for their lives. and here is a live look. you can see highway 101 is now back open. ktvu's alex savidge has been out there ole morning -- all morning and coming up he will tell us how the chp is saying how the people hurt made an unfortunate and common mistake. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> i'm dave clark. steve is off today but rosemary is here. >> yes. we have another nice day starting out with fog. the pattern not going to change up. unfortunately, no rain to speak of but we do have a warmup to talk about. let's get into the here and now where we're take bark -- waking up with the clouds and the fog.

it's not as widespread. if you are waking up with partly cloudy or clearer skies this morning, chances are you are cooler this morning. but again, over parts of the north bay and over parts through the delta at well as the carquinez strait, napa, visibility down to a quarter mile. it's fairly widespread. if i get in closer, the dark shades indicate where the visibility is low. along i-80 you will find it in and out of fairfield. you will find it -- well, around the american canyon but again along highway 101 in and out of santa rosa. it stretches and then concord, that stretch pittsburg, baypoint, antioch. you may find it for as you well. heard from folks in benicia, mars. have it outside your door. 45 degrees in oakland right now. 45 sfo. but this is where we have clearer skies this morning and that's where our temperatures are 10 to 12 degrees colder.

name, 34. just above freezing out side your door right now. 39 in livermore. half moon bay sitting at 54 degrees this morning. it has to do with a little bit of wind that's blowing over half moon bay and helping to stir out the cold air. for the afternoon, numbers not going to change a whole lot. widespread low to mid-60s around the region for today. but again, i see a warmup coming in time for the bay area weekend. i will show you the numbers coming up. good morning. good morning. we have developing news in santa clara. deadly crash has shut down a busy intersection near levi stadium. janine de la vega just arrived at the scene. what do we know? >> reporter: well, we're still trying to find out how long this intersection will be closed. we're at great america parkway and tazman where police have this whole area roped off. they are investigating this deadly accident. we know at least one person is dead. that's the driver of the honda accord that you see right there that is on great america parkway. we know it collided -- the

driver of that car collided with a chevy tahoe that you see that's mangled up front with its hood. there was just one person in that vehicle as well. that person was transported to the hospital. it's unclear of how badly that person is injured. this happened just before 5:00 this morning. again, right here at this intersection, great park parkway and tasman. this is very close to levi stadium, the hilton as well as other high-tech companies. now, again, we're trying to find out exactly how long this intersection is closed and also a little bit more information about the victim. we don't know the sex of the person who died. paramedics and emergency crews did try to help this morning but they did not survive. at this moment, you can see police are investigating. they are also looking for witnesses to piece together what happened. did somebody run a red light?

was somebody distracted? was alcohol involved. we just don't know the answers to these questions but we hope we will in the next hour. back to you there in the studio. >> all right. we'll take it from here. i do want to mention traffic will be moderate when it comes to the rest of the morning commute. let's take a look at some of the pictures. 280 in san jose nearby, it's a become bit slow getting up to highway 17. there are no mikor problems up -- major problems up to 17. 17 itself is getting busy. remember those new metering lights are on on the onramps. 85 in the commute direction in the cupertino area. cupertino and sunnyvale. so if you drive up and you are in the used to it, you will have to be waiting there on some of those onramps for the metering lights to let on the freeway. southbound 680 at bollinger, we have a crash reported to be blocking a few lanes.

out to the bay bridge toll plaza we go, that delay is parked up. it's about a 20-minute drive get across -- getting across into san francisco. a major injury crash shut down a busy freeway near san francisco international airport. southbound highway 101 is open again. but alex savidge is live and says two people were hit by a car while they were on the freeway. >> reporter: an unfortunate series of events. initially the two victims were inside of an suv that crashed here on highway 101 this morning. the suv wound up stuck in the middle of lanes. when the two men decided to get out of the suv to find safety, the chp says an oncoming car slammed right into them. the impact sent both of those men flying through the air. they are bothed to be -- both believed to be in their 20s.

they were rushed to the hospital. the accident happened highway 101 southbound north of the backyard way exit. the victim's suv lost control and hit a side guardrail and it came to the rest in the middle of lanes of the that's when the two men got out and they were both hit. in that situation, the chp says the safest thing to do is to stay inside the your car. >> absolutely. that's your only protection. you have a better chance at surviving the collision if you are inside of a vehicle as opposed to standing out side. >> reporter: the driver of the honda that struck the men had only minor injuries after the crash. chp investigators were out here. they gathered evidence at the scene, trying to figure out what caused the initial crash this morning. an officer told me it doesn't look like alcohol played a role but there will be further testing done on all of the drivers who were involved here in morning. and they will figure out if there will be charges.

for a time this morning, all of the southbound lanes on highway 101 in the millbrae area were shut down for this investigation. but the freeway now back open to traffic. >> all right. that's good news. thank you. a third traffic situation, a freeway in contra costa county was shut down for several hours this morning after a shooting. walnut creek police found a car with more than a dozen bullet holes in it near the kaiser hospital on south main street. there are reports that car is linked to a shooting on westbound highway 4 between port chicago highway and willow pass road. people at the hospital say one person from that car came to the emergency room. we just checked again with condition cord police. and they are still not releasing any more information and we'll give you more details as soon as we have them. three puppies found in a trash bag in an east bay park are alive and well. the 5-week-old puppies were found in the park in pleasant hill by a couple walking their

dog. the dog sniffed out a trash bag tied at the top and the puppies were found inside. the couple took them home, fed and washed them and took them to the animal shelter. they are expected to be put in foster homes until they are old enough for adoption. there is a new health hazard facing firefighters on treasure island. first they were dealing with mold. now they say the fire station is infested with rat and rat mites. tara moriarty obtained documents outlining the conditions. tara moriarty she's live with with more. >> reporter: the firefighters who work and live here at the training facility say they've been getting bitten for weeks by what they believe are rat mites similar to bedbugs. ktvu has obtained these exclusive documents which show that half a dozen crew members

have been bitten and complained to the administration weeks ago. this internal memo says yesterday a pest inspector came to the training facility to recover sticky traps set earlier that show an infestation of rat mites. he needed to gain accession to the attic space. you may remember last spring crews from station 48 were forced out of the firehouse because of black mold and health problems. they live in a temporary classroom down the street at the training facility. joining me live is ken lombardi. you are saying there's no proof of an infestation. >> first i want to say the most important thing is the health and safety of our members. we tike that seriously. about three weeks ago to a month ago, there was a report

that somebody thought they had gotten bit by a bedbug. we immediately took action. we called the pest company, had them come out and investigate for bedbugs. they brought a special dog out and they found no evidence of bedbugs. something must -- we didn't know if it was aspider or what -- a spider or what. so we set a trap to find out what insect bit the person. yesterday they got the results back that it was a type of a mite. the worker here for the pest company said he thought it might be a type of mite associated with a rat which the mites are very small. they are microzoppic. they have to take it back to the lab and research it. i talked to the bott and they are searching to see what type of mite it was. she said it was none not an infestation but it was something to be addressed. >> reporter: the report says that half a dozen people were bitten by you are saying it was less than that. >> to my knowledge, we had the initial report to the doctor

that one person was bit. i talked to the doctor this morning, he said it may have been two people. i don't know about a half a dozen people. i'm not saying it didn't happen but it has not come to me as far as that goes. >> reporter: thank you for joining us. we appreciate. the exterminator we are ally told will be later -- we're told will be later this morning. i'm tara moriarty, back to you. >> very interesting. all right. thank you. 7:12. pg&e busy trying to restore gas service in san jose to dozens of the businesses. now, yesterday, a construction crew hit had high pressure gas line near tully and quinnby. the area was convicted. about 57 businesses say their natural gas supply was cut off. the gas line was repaired but by that time, most of the business owners were gone. so this morning, crews are going back to the area and will go door to door to restore

a woman from pennsylvania is being reunited with her camera. last saturday, clayton douglas bought a camera. it looks like this one. he bought it at a garage sale in san francisco. when he looked through the memory card, he saw dozens of vacation photos from places like the grand canyon and europe. he was able to track down the owner. katie briggs. the camera was stolen when she was in the mission district as part of a cross-country culinary district. >> i didn't think i was ever gonna see it again. i was using the photos to put together a cookbook. >> she has not been able to finish the cookbook because her camera was stolen.

"the interview "will make its debut on netflix on saturday. sony pulled the movie from most theaters last month when cyber criminals threatened violence against movie goers. after president obama and some in hollywood criticized the move, sony release the film to a small number of cheaters and a large number of digital distributors. to date, it's pulled in at least $40 million. mostly through online rentals. well, critics are taking potshots at the most popular movie in the country, "american sniper" because of the prop. moviegoers say it's blatantly clear the baby used during this intense scene is fake. cooper could even be seening his number to move the baby's hand. one critic has a theory about

the first thing we'll mention the area to stay away from is get mark parkway and tasman. an investigation into a deadly early-morning crash and that intersection is almost completely blocked. cars are getting crew but i wouldn't recommend you going anywhere near the area. some cars are getting through using a series of detours. ktvu's janine de la vega is there and she's trying to find out more information about exactly what happened. we do know that one person has died as a result of this crash? let's take a look at the westbound bay bridge. you can ethis traffic is here is going -- you can see this traffic is here is going document moderately heavy. about an eight to ten-minute wait in some of these lanes and then a ten-minute drive across the span. >> interstate 880 not too bad as you drive through. northbound 880 on the traffic is moving along nicely. there is a crash in san ramon blocking two lanes, southbound 680 at bollinger.

you can get by but there's a bottleneck there and traffic is backing up. 7:19. let's go to rosemary. the official sunrise is upon us. if do you have the sunshine this morning -- if you do have the sunshine this morning, it's a glorious day. giving you a look at the north bay, east bay this is where we're dealing with valley fog. and being told it's the east bay. as we get into the second half of your morning, these low clouds will pull back and deteriorate. mostly sunny skies for today. for the time being, we have the fog. it's really thick in areas like santa rosa, napa, seeing it through the carquinez strait through parts of the delta. concord reporting visibility down to a quarter mile at the airport there. if you do have mostly clear skies this morning and you had clouds yesterday, chances are your temperatures are cooler this morning. a whopping 10 to 12 degrees colder in areas right around napa. you may notice that difference as well. the still shot here of the satellite view showing all of that gray in the valley stretching from sacramento all

the way down into southern california. if you are taking i-5, maybe highway 99, you will be met by that. outside of that, it's the low cloud and fog over the north bay. some of our east bay valley locations, but along the coast received a tweet and a picture from cassie where it's just a beautiful start to the day. we have that dry forecast in place. it will remain locked in as we get into the second part of your week. temperatures are going to climb. in fact, we may see some near record warmth for your weekend. 43 degrees right now in concord. 35 in napa and 37 in santa rosa. these are the chillier spots this morning. livermore you are sinking back to about 39. the sun is up. temperatures will slowly begin to rebound as we get into the next our hour so. upper 40s san francisco through redwood city and mountain view. a little bit earlier looked into half moon bay where we do have partly cloudy mostly clear skies. a little bit of wind and temperatures at half moon bay in the 50s this morning. 63 degrees for san rafael. this afternoon, 63 in berkeley,

the recent measles outbreak traced to theme parks now includes workers at the parks. at least five workers were infected. three recovered. the other two remain off the job. disney said it gave measles immunity tests and offered vaccinations to workers after the outbreak was reported. more than 40 cases in california, four states and nextco have been connected to the disney parks. there is a shortage of prescription cough syrup and many pharmacies have empty shelves. ktvu checked with a walgreens, a cvs and rite aid, all said they were out or running low on prescription cough syrup with codeine. the same thing goes for

favor our north bay valley locations, that's exactly where we have it right now. santa rosa, napa, stretches to i-80 at fairfield and concord reporting visibility down to a quarter mile. we have it here. this will be with us for the next hour or two before it begins to burn off. temperaturewise it's a chilly start for many. napa above freezing. 37 in santa rosa. these numbers, a lot cooler than yesterday morning the upper 30s low 40s for parts of the east bay and 40s around the bay. the afternoon highs, again a lot like yesterday. low to mid-60s in the forecast. 64 oakland. 62 in concord. we'll be 10 degrees or so warmer than that. i will show you when coming up. good morning, sal. working. sometimes the battery goes out. let's go to janine de la vega with an update on the deadly accident. any word when that area may reopen? >> reporter: they are saying it could be around three hours before it opens. i do want to show you, though, this traffic situation. that's great america parkway. you can see police are detouring cars off of it because they don't want anyone in this intersection. there's still a lot of debris here in the roads. they have evidence markers all lined up in the middle of this intersection. and then further on, you can see the two cars involved in the accident. a chevy tahoe and then this honda accord. we're told that two drivers, one in each car, no passengers, collided at this intersection. this happened just before 5:00 a.m. and we are told that the driver of the honda accord did not

survive. there were paramedics and emergency crews that came here, took the person out of the car and worked on them but they died at the scene. it's unknown if that person is a man or a woman. we do know that the driver of the chevy tahoe was injure. they were taken to a -- injured. they were takon a local -- take on a local hospital. we're still working on getting the information. we still don't know the cause of the accident, if somebody was speeding or if somebody ran a red light. that's why the traffic team is out here. this will remain closed. great america parkway and tasman for at least about three hours. they are telling people to use alternate routes. sal what, can you tell people about how to get around this? >> >> not use great america parkway. use one of the other ways

around, santa clara. you can stay on 237. 237 itself is slow before the great america parkway but the time you get to the exit, you can keep going or go around, use the mantague expressway. avoid tasman at great america parkway. let's take a look at some of these other pictures. westbound 80 from the carquinez bridge, to the macarthur maze. a 35-minute drive then when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, you will be waiting for 20 minutes getting into san francisco. also this morning, we're looking at the commute here as you are driving into the rest of the south bay. we've been looking at 101, palo alto and the entire area. 85 is pretty slow from 87 all the way up into the cupertino area. 7:34. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you. death with dignity. it's a grea controversial subject. now it's making its way here to

california. pam document is in the studio now to tell us -- pam cook is in the studio to tell us what's happening. >> right to die legislation will be introduced in sacramento today. it's being presented by dan diaz and two senators. diaz and his wife, brittany maynard, brought the right to die issue, to the forefront with their story. brittany maynard was given only a few months to go. so the couple moved from here to oregon because of the death with dignity law there. she was given a lethal dose of medication by a doctor and ended her life last year. >> that's the reason for this push is make this into a law because it's the promise that i made to brittany. >> the law would have limits. now, it would only be for terminal patients with less than six months to live. two doctors would have to agree independently on conditions, including the patient is

mentally competent and able to take the medication themselves without help from a doctor. previous attempts to pass similar legislation in california have failed. coming up in the next hour of "mornings on 2," the story of another bay area woman facing a similar situation as brittany maynard and she will be in sacramento as well today. dave? >> all right. thank you. 7:36. in his sixth state of the union address last night, president obama said the u.s. has turned the page. he said the economy is better and the unemployment rate is low. >> america for all that we've endured for all of the grit and hard work required to come back, for all of the tasks that lie ahead, know this -- the shadow of crisis has passed and the state of the union is strong. houses are controlled by republicans. >> we can't put the security of families at risk by taking away their health insurance or unraveling the new rules on wall street or refighting past battles on immigration when we have to fix a broken system. if a bim comes to my desk that tries to do any of these things, i will veto it. [laughter] >> interesting expression on the men sitting behind him, boehner and biden. that prompted democrats in the chamber to stand and applaud. the republican part tapped a brand-new member of congress to deliver the official gop response. joni ernst of iowa says washington has failed americans with policies such as obamacare, but things are about to change that's why the new republican majority you elected starting by reforming congress to make it function again. and now we're working hard to pass the kind of serious job creation ideas you deserve. >> joni ernst says republicans will focus on ideas to cut wasteful spending and balance the budget but not with higher taxes on the wealthy like the president has proposed.

some political science students at santa clara university gathered to watch the state of the union address together. about 60 students, lap smarts and smartphones in hand, watched the speech. they say they support the president's proposal for free community college. >> i thought the community college was a big one. >> definitely the college thing. with all of us being in college now, it's -- with how expensive it is, it's great to see he's trying to get it down to steer ro -- zero. >> at ktvu.com we've posted more clips of the president's address. you will find the full text of his prepared speech. >> all right. 7:39. a church pastor in oakland calls a senseless act of violence. last night two men were shot

and killed inside a minivan. it happened around 5:30 last night on 10th and campbell. pastor fleming says as soon as he heard what happened, he went to the scene but all he do was try to conso many the victim's families -- console the victim's families. >> when someone so close to a place refugee lose their life senselessly. >> no word yet on suspects or possible motives. a jury is scheduled to begin deliberating today in the federal corruption trial of two san francisco police officers. officers richard and arshard are accused of stealing point and property from drug suspects at single room occupancy hotels. the prosecution has surveillance video which reportedly shows the officers entering rooms without warrants

or the consent of the occupants. the defense says the officers were just doing their jobs and were not trying to violate anyone's rights. last month a jury convicted two other officers as part of the same case. we have really one of the most adorable videos you will ever see. a big-hearted monkey named toby trying to console his friend. look how upset she is. this video was posted on instagram. we're told anjelica was sad because zookeepers put her in a timeout. we're not sure why. but she was clearly broken up about it. good thing toby was there to lend a friendly paw. today happens to be national hugging day. someone there needed a hug for sure. facebook is making changes. coming up in the next hour of "mornings on 2," what users can expect to see less of on their

prosecutors say at least

ten the -- of the 68 protesters who stopped traffic on the san mateo bridge monday night will face charges. the charges include causing a public nuisance and blocking traffic. it's not clear yet if the other 58 will face charges. authorities have located at least one of the cars used to drop off protesters on the bridge. that car has now been impounded. officials at stanford say the protest was not sanctioned by the university. the new onramp metering lights are on along 85 in the south bay. the lights are between 280 in cupertino and highway 101 in mountain view. they are just green right now. but next weeks, you will see them change between red and green. the lights at onramps in the northbound direction will be activated for the morning commute. the southbound lights will be turned on for the evening commute. caltrans says that area has become more conjeferpted due to the influx of tech works at facebook, google and yahoo!. a gruesome discovery in

berkeley raising concern. it involves parts of dead animals left near vegan restaurants. brian flores is in berkeley now. you are outside one of those restaurants. good morning. >> reporter: i am, dave. good morning. we're in front of this mexican restaurant off adeline. this is one location where a wild boar carcass was found near the restaurant. not too far from here off shaddock another's boar head was also found. want to go to pictures of the car cause taken by a viewer. she says at about 9:00 on monday morning, she and a friend were walking to the store when they know ised the head on top of a trash can in front of -- another tied the head on top of a trash can in front of flocco's. there was another head found on top of a newsstand in front of a

toll. >> let's take a look at the commute now. traffic is moving along pretty well in many areas and not so well in others. nothing surprising at the bay bridge toll plaza. in san jose, we have slow traffic getting up to downtown san jose. it will be stop and go in the area. as a matter of fact, i can show you the south bay map, there is a lot of red on it. red means stop-and-go traffic. it's not only slow on 280 but 85 northbound is slow from about 87 all the way up into the los gatos area. that continues slow as you get into sunnyvale and cupertino. bay bridge toll plaza has been busy. it doesn't look as bad as yesterday. things are beginning to clear out a little bit. westbound drive is about 25 minutes. 7:49. let's go to rosemary in the weather center. that was a beautiful shot there at the bay bridge toll plaza, but not the case for many of us this morning. waking up with low clouds and pretty thick fog. there is another beautiful view. mostly sunny skies up above the low clouds and the fog. but as i mentioned a little

while ago, the national weather service has now decided it will issue an advisory for valley fog in the north bay as well as the east bay. it lasts until 10:00 this morning. it means visibility down to a quarter mile. less than that. you can see it's fairly widespread. gonna find it through all of the places we've been reporting. napa down to a quarter mile. includes parts of the bay. you can see the richmond/san rafael bridge right here within this advisory. it stretches into concord along highway 4. you will find it from concord to antioch and then along 680 into the san ramon valley, we've got patchy fog as well. take it easy. keep on the low beams. you know how it goes. a still shot of the satellite view and that fog is very widespread through the central valley all the way down into southern california. but on the grand scheme of things, our pattern changing very little with dry conditions in the forecast for today as we

afternoon highs for today, low to mid-60s. not a lot of change. 63 hayward. 63 vallejo with good to moderate air qual the in the forecast for today. as we get into the weekend, temperatures will climb in the low 70s. we're looking at a commute where traffic is not as bad as it was yesterday. we're seeing the fog not as thick. i think that helps things out. this is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's a delay but the 880 approach over there coming in from 880 is noted a bassed a it was the we have a -- as bad as it was. we have a 20-minute delay. the morning commute is not too bad on the san mateo bridge. there is a little bit of slowing getting to the span and dumbarton bridge the same. we can look at the east bay map and 580 is slow through san leandro and part of oakland. it gets better by time you reach park boulevard westbound and generally we have a lot he slow traffic on 680. southbound getting out of alamo and danville because of an

earlier accident. two people who are hospitalized after being hit on highway 101 near san francisco international airport. alex savidge is live in millbrae to explain what they were doing on the freeway in the first place. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this all started when the two victims crashed their suv and it wound up stuck in the middle of the here on highway 101 in millbrae early this morning. initially those two men, they were okay. but when they tried to get out of the suv to get to safety, the chp says an oncoming car slammed right into this them. they were both sent flying through the air and suffered critical congress. the young men believed to be in their twegets were rushed to the hospital. they both had life-threatening injuries. the accident happened about 2:30 this morning. it was on highway 101 in the southbound lanes just north of the backyardway exit. now -- broadway exist -- exit.

the safest thing you can do to is stay inside your car. >> if you are stuck in the lane at some point, it may be better to stay in your vehicle and wait for emergency personnel to arrive or if you can, you want to try to find the nearest guardrail, possibly you if you can do it safely. >> reporter: the driver of the honda accord that struck the two men had only minor injuries as a result of the crash. chp officers are out here. they gathered evidence on the freeway trying to figure out what caused the initial crash this merning. an officer told -- this morning. an officer told me it doesn't look like alcohol plied a role in the crash but they will be doing further testing on the all of the drivers involved. there was a shutdown -- complete shutdown of the southbound lanes of highway for this investigation early on this morning. but as you can probably see behind me, this morning traffic

flowing freely, all lanes back open now. >> thank you. a freeway in contra costa county was shut down after a shootdown. walnut creek police found a car with more than a dozen bullet holes in it near the kaiser hospital on south main street. there are reports that car is linked to a shooting on westbound highway 4 between port chicago highway and willow pass road. people at the hospital say one person came from that car to the emergency room. we've checked again with concord police. they are still not releasing any more information. we will give you more details as soon as we have them. 8:05. only on 2, a new health hazard facing firefighters on treasure island. now, first they were dealing with mold. now they say their fire station is infested with rats and rat mites. ktvu tara moriarty obtained exclusive documents about those conditions. tara joining us now on treasure island with reactions from the

command staff out there. tara? >> reporter: fire officials say there is no infestation but the firefighters say they've been getting bitten for weeks. according to a new report, they believe it's rat mites similar to bedbugs. now they usually feed off rats but they can feed off ma man blood, too. crews arrived to trim the tree since it's believed they are using them to climb on the roost and gain access -- on the roof and gain access. the department says the situation is being blown out of proportion. >> i feel the situation is real but it's far from an infestation and, you, know, if we thought there was a health problem, we would bull them out. here -- we would pull them out. we don't want to put our members in jeopardy. >> reporter: documents obtained

exclusively say half a dozen members have been exposed. this internal memo sent to mark gobz said yesterday a pest inspector came to recover sticky traps set weeks erg yearl that showed an infestation of rat mites. the paper says that he needs to gain access to the access to locate any nests. crews from station 48 were forced out of their firehouse because of black mold. they now live in a temporary classroom down the street at the department's training facility. firefighters say they worry they could bring the mites home with them in the car and to their houses. they've been advised to shower and wash their clothes but an exterminator is due out here later this morning along with top officials from the fire department. live from treasure island, i'm tara moriarty, back to you. 8:07.

well, happening today, governor jerry brown will be at the university of california regents meeting in san francisco. he's expected to pitch an unusual idea. the governor is president of the board of regents. both he and uc president janet napolitano, they are expected to proposed creating a unique committee of two. they would meet to decide if the uc system needs more state funding and how much to avoid a due wick hike. the two of them have clashed over funding for uc. some senior citizens and people with disability, you will be able to ride muni for free. san francisco transportation officials approved free passes yesterday. now, before the vote, dozens of people rallied on the steps of city hall supporting that program. the people eligible include people with disabilities, anyone over the age of 65 with an annual income of less than $68,000. the free passes are expected to be available started march 1st.

rosa. she said not only is it foggy, it's very cold. national weather service has decided to issue a dense fog advisory. it includes the north valley, the san pablo area north of the bay bridge. for the east bay valley location, it stretches from concord and walnut creek and down into the san ramon valley. take a look at some of these cities included in the advisory, in lasts until 10:00. santa rosa, petaluma, san rafael, sausalito, you will find it around the american canyon. fairfield, i-80. through concord. highway 4 visibility down a quarter mile in and around pittsburg. so again, take it slow. we have that through the morning hours. cooler temperatures, waking up with the cloud cover not as widespread as yesterday morning and without that blanket, we really cooled off in the overnight hours. outside of that, little change in the forecast. morning fog, afternoon sun.

8:24. a british tabloid is ditching a rather controversial feature that's been in its pages for nearly half a century. the tabloid called "the sun" has stopped printing photos of topless models on page 3. it's been doing that since 1969. women's groups have complained about page 3 for decades while they say progress is being made, they've not won the battle yet. "the sun" will still public photos of scantily clad women, just not topless. "the interview" is headed to netflix. it will make its debut on

year-old brittany maynard, the young woman who was dying of cancer and moved to oregon because of that state's death with dignity law. well, another bay area woman, jennifer glass of san mateo, is 51 years old. and has advanced lung cancer. she says patients should have the right to choose their own personal medical destiny. she will join brittany's widower dan diaz and two california state senators in sacramento today to introduce right to die legislation. diaz said he made a promise to his wife brittany as she fought a painful brain cancer and before she took a lethal dose of medication prescribed by a doctor in oregon. >> get the law on the books. it doesn't matter what state you are a resident of, you can have a peaceful passing. >> the law would have limits. it would only be for terminal patients with less than six months to live. two doctors would have to agree independently on a number of conditions, including that the

patient is mentally competent and able to take the medication themselves without help from a doctor. pharmacists and doctors would be given legal immunity. now, since the oregon law went into effect, back in 1997, 1,000 people have have requested prescriptions about 700 have taken the medication to end their lives. according to the oregon health authority, cancer is the leading underlying illness among those requesting the death with dignity option. dave? >> 8:35. a church pastor in oakland talking about what he calls a senseless act of violence. last night two men were shot and killed inside of a minivan right next to his church. it happened around 5:30 at 10th and campbell streets. pastor curtis fleming says as soon as he heard what happened, he went to the scene but all he could was console the victim's families. >> it's a sense of helplessness, when someone so close to a place of refuge,

viewer. she said she and her friend were walking to a grocery store when they noticed the boar's head on top of a trash can. she said she had to do a double take to make sure it wasn't fake. turns out not too far from here, there was another boar's head found near another vegan restaurant at the same time. the boar's head was placed on on of a newsstand. berkeley police are continuing to investigate whether this was a targeted message or just a prank or something completely different. berkeley residents say the discovery was gruesome. >> i think there are people with very twisted senses of humor and don't under how that affects people or people with children. people who are vulnerable to seeing something so gusts, i don't think that should on the street. >> reporter: next to the establishment is called black and white liquor store which is where it's believed the boar's head was placed.

just as the flut season is in full swing, there is a shortage of prescription cough syrup and some pharmacies have empty shelves. now, ktvu checked a walgreens, a cvs, and a rite aid in san jose, all said they were either out or running low on prescription cough syrup with codeine. same goes for pharmacies around the state. one hospital pharmacy says companies only make a certain amount of cough syrup every year. it takes a while to increase that production. >> there's been more than a more than -- more than normal increase for cough syrup. >> some pharmacists say suppliers are rationing the small amounts of the cough syrup they have left and don't know when they will get their next shipment. if you have a cough, your only cough is an over the counter remedy. drugstores still have plenty of that in stock, at least for

now. 8:46. the sinking of a small ferry dock in richmond could actually speed up building a new ferry terminal in the same general location later this year. the dock was just outside of the craneway pavilion on harbor way. it sank after being batter by high winds and strong waves during last month's storms. dock will be raised and sent to a recycling plant. city leaders say the dock was gonna be moved anyway before a new terminal could be built. the new onramp metering lights were turned on along highway 85 in the south bay. the lights are on highway 101 in mountain view. they are all just green right now. but next week you will see them change between red and green. the lights at onramps in the northbound direction will be activated for the morning commute and instead of stopping at 9:00 a.m. like many metering lights in the bay area. these ones will stay active until 11:00 a.m.

welcome back. 8:53. new this morning, vice president joe biden getting a lot of buzz right now on social media. earlier today, on tv, he said, there is a chance he will run for the democratic presidential nomination in 2016. now, at 72 years old, biden says he will make up his mind this summer. he also had some nice things to say about hillary clinton, his potential rival for the nomination. he called hillary a really competent, capable person and a friend. well, students from tokay high school in low tie are speaking out. they are saying a rival students from st. mary's shouted a racially insensitive chant during last friday's game. it all started when one of their players of pakistani decent was at the free-throw line. >> they were chanting usa!
