safety concerns at a south bay intersection after a driver strikes two women walking near a park killing one of them. good evening everyone i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. people who live by fair oaks park in sunny vale are telling us tonight about a dangerous intersection there. the driver's car eventually came to a stop in the grass of the park. the park sits on north wolf road and north fair oaks avenue. katie utehs is there tonight and brings us the latest. >> reporter: you can see the grass is torn where the car

stopped. with oil also on the curb. it's likely the collision happened far into the intersection kind of where that island is that you can see the cones are covering two pole that is were pent after the car plowed through. it's also an area marked with candles and roses. stoplights emerge lane, crosswalk cars and pedestrians converge at a multi lane intersection in sunny vale. north fair oaks and north wolf road. >> where it comes together that's where you have the conflict with pe de pedestrians. >> it's hard to think about how to be with life. instead of taking yourself for granted. >> reporter: around 2:00 in the afternoon the driver of the

silver ford focus struck two pedestrians. who had the right of way still unclear. police say women in the mid-50s died on scene while the second pedestrians in her mid-30s was transported to the hospital in critical condition. the driver appeared to be a woman in her mid-40s. investigators say she stayed on scene and is cooperating. the driver described as clearly distraught following the collision. as are people who live in the area. >> because it could have been anybody. because we walked that intersection almost every day you know. >> officers collecting evidence for several hours. i spoke to officers multiple times throughout the night however they're not releasing any details again the driver of the vehicle is cooperating. ken, heather. >> all right katie, thank you very much.

sad story. 40-year-old maurice was killed. he died at the scene. family members say summerfield is the father of five children. a second person was taken to the hospital in stable condition. the driver ran from the car and oakland police say they are still looking for that person. >> less than 48 hours after a deal was reached in the long running port dispute suddenly hauled -- suddenly came to a halt again. ktvu's debora villalon live now at the port where the night shift is under way. the question is, will it last, deb. >> reporter: yeah, heather we're about two hours into it right now. the port says that five ships are due to be loaded and unloaded here with three more scheduled overnight.

but there was a big hick up here this morning and that could happen again. >> i went to work today and then i was fired today. >> reporter: trent willis was there. he and a few hundred union long shoreman a few how how -- few hours into their shift were terminated this morning. >> we were fired for taking a 20 minute break. >> reporter: they were making head way on weeks of halted cargo. suddenly they halted to decide whether to take a unit break or they would take break separately. >> we were told that if we took a unit break we would be fired. which is what it says in our contract. >> reporter: it is a stumble after reaching a tentative

agreement. >> this is happening at one port, the port of oakland. it's not the situation at the other 28 ports. >> reporter: the pacific maritime association says an area arbitrator ruled the unit's break illegal work stoppages resulting in port operations being shut down inning work. our inquiries were rebuffed. >> it's our responsibility to maintain the property. please leave. >> reporter: trucks lined up, their drivers hopeful they would be allowed to unload. this one full of frozen chicken going overseas. >> i'm going to charge them regardless. if they don't accept it i'm going to take it back and i'm going to charge them for that. >> our customers have suffered business reversals as a result. now they're asked to take another hit this just isn't

right. >> reporter: further damaging oakland's reputation. both sides blame the other but at one point their labor history there's little debate. >> i've never seen a happy relationship between the two parties. >> reporter: the issue of breaks seems to be an ongoing power struggle. if everyone goes on break at once. extra workers have to be on hand to fill the gaps and that costs money. the workers who were fired today lost pay for that shift. but they can still be called back to work for future shifts. heather. >> reporter: the problems persists let's hope they can work this out soon, thanks so much deb. renewed concerns tonight about the risk of trains hauling volatile crude oil. there could be more than 200 derailments of oil and ethanol carrying trains over the next two decades. a massive train derailment last monday in west virginia forced more than 100 people from their

homes. the department of transportation study estimates 207 derailments could cost $4.5 billion in damages. further more the analysis noted that if an accident happened in a high population it could kill more than 200 people. in november, ktvu reported on concerns about back and crude shipments. the deputy director said the state should have more realtime information on when and where those back and crude trains are traveling. >> we should be able to know that about volatile substances like crude coming across our rail lines. >> reporter: in the west virginia case, they were carrying $3 million of back and oil when 27 cars derailed. the cars which derailed were newer cars which are supposed to be an improvement over older models. the bay area weekend wraps up with strong winds in fact, it's still pretty gusty out

there. some people out on the bay ran into a little bit of trouble in the windy conditions. the coast guard was called to tow the sailboat to shore. >> that could be a tricky place to be when it's windy out there. looking at the picture of mark it's still pretty windy out there. >> this is the camera we've been watching over the past hour or so. the wind still a factor. coming in out of the north that's a fairly dry direction. the fog has cleared out but still gusty winds out there. winds right now around 20 to 25 miles per hour. and as i mentioned that's a northerly wind that has been increasing all day long. it is still a factor out there right now with wind advisories posted for parts of the bay area. as far as the winds today, the peak gusts a listing for you. look at mount diablo, 60 miles per hour. that was very early this morning. the winds have backed up a little bit since then but still

gusty conditions up the top of diablo. more observations for the oakland hills out toward napa, richmond, and in san francisco. as far as the advisories a good portion of northern california. they have delayed advisories until the afternoon. for the north and east bay hill that is advisory in place until 10:00 tomorrow morning. all of this associated with a system that is producing some rainfall to our south in southern california. we'll talk more about this in a few minutes. we'll also let you know if we have any rain clouds to talk about. how six people to a canoe trip ended up having to be rescue bid the coast guard. hear what the coast guard said they did right to stay alive. san francisco firefighter say at least 12 people are out of their homes after last night's three alarm fire. one once used a cell phone to capture video of the fire. it happened at 15th and church

streets near the mission districts. he said it seemed like the roof just exploded with flames right before his eyes. firefighters say the fire caused an estimated $1.4 million in damage. the cause of the fire has yet to be determined. a call for terror on american soil today from the somali based militant group. this is the same group that took responsibility for an explosion at a somalian mall. >> reporter: this is the same group responsible for an attack at a mall in kenya that left more than 60 people dead back in 2013. >> we take this kind of thing very serious. >> reporter: in a video released saturday, the somali terror group linked to al-qaida is calling for attacks on western malls. specifically london oxford street and the mall of america

in minnesota. the mall of america released a statement saying it's aware of the video and is monitoring the threat. some increased security measures may be noticeable, others won't be. listen to homeland security head jay johnson. >> you need to be vigilant. we just revamped if you see something say something campaign at the super bowl last month. public security is critical. >> reporter: at the crux of this may be that the united states killed the group's leader last year. since then they've vowed revenge. in los angeles, will carr, fox news. islamic state militants have armoured seized vehicles and thousands of american made weapons. according to cnn, the militants released this video of weapons

wants to make sure the afghans are able to maintain the relative security gained during america's 14 year mission. >> we're going to be partners for a very long time. long after this conflict and the presence that we have here in association with this campaign is over. this will still be an important part of the world. there are currently 10,000 troops in afghanistan in training and support roles. president obama's decision on the draw down may come next month when he hosts afghanistan's president at the white house. >> congress heads back to work tomorrow with a laundry list of help ahead of them. but part of that agenda is avoiding a shutdown of a government shutdown. >> reporter: homeland security will run out of money that is unless congress can come up with an agreement.

temperatures, a 30 to 40-degree break felt nice but it quickly turned snow into slush on sidewalks in new york, philadelphia, washington and new jersey. snow was welcomed site for the thompson's golf tournament. all the proceeds from the event go toward the american diabetes association. >> you have no idea what your ball is going to do. once you strike wit a club. it might go three feet and just sit there and spin. you never know. >> reporter: according to the organizers, the event began in 2003 and so far it's raised more than $50,000. new tonight from sonoma county where a roll over crash killed a man yesterday morning in petaluma. the coroner identified the victim as perry of sonoma. perry was driving east on adobe road when he lost control of his bmw. the car veered off the road, flipped over several times and

landed in a vineyard. the mangled car was discovered later that morning by a vineyard worker. the bay conditions we had earlier today turned dangerous for several people who had to be rescued. the san francisco bay is known as being windy. >> challenging weather out there today. >> so challenging that there was a small craft advisory. >> i think we missed that. >> reporter: the water that beconned the crew of an outrigger canoe ended up swapping their canoe. >> it was just a wave that came out of nowhere. >> they did not have a means to communicate to anyone on shore. so they did a great job of staying together. >> reporter: from no warning they went from seeing white

disneyland now costing $93. crews were turning back the clock a day at the san francisco ferry building. workers hoisted a big number five to finish spelling out the year 1915. they want the building to look just like it did 100 years ago when the panama pacific acquisition was in town. back then it was lit up with thousands of lights for a 10 month period at 19 million people came to san francisco to visit the expo. this time around the lights will be low energy led bulbs. there will be a ceremony to turn on the lights and they will remain lit until december. hollywood's finest graced the red carpet for the 87 annual academy awards. birdman won for best

families hopes to stay in their homes in walnut creek continue to fight an uphill battle. despite orders to leave to make way for new development, some are refusing. a developer wants to build a new high end condominium complex where a handful of older homes are located. it's right across ignacio road. >> reporter: this sunday there's no rest for a handful of walnut creek families facing evictions. they've dreaded february 22nd for months. >> today is the deadline for us to move. >> reporter: the homes sit next to the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station. a location for a high end apartment complex named the landing. it's why they've been told to move out and turn their keys in to the landlord. >> i don't want to get in trouble with nobody, but i'm

not going to move. >> reporter: a few are standing their ground. >> i just plan to stay because i have not found a place. >> are you leaving? >> no because we don't have any where to go yet. >> reporter: and maria and her husband don't want to move their children. >> we grew up right here. i just don't get it. >> hoping to get a place. >> reporter: but without any answers they're stressed. >> it's hard, i mean. they want to make four times the rent. i don't make that much money. i can't. there's no way. >> reporter: an attorney representing the families says he's optimistic the landlords will grant the tenants a six week extension. it's time rios says she needs so her family isn't left out on the streets. >> i just hope they give it to us because we have nowhere else to go. >> reporter: it doesn't appears the families will face any reprocautions if they refuse to

leave tonight. extension could be announced in the next few days. that is something the u.s. department of housing and urban development is still investigating. in walnut creek, cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. a bomb buried in the snow exploded today. the deadly blast was caught on camera. it happened in kartive a city that lies outside the conflict zone. four people have been detained by security forces in connection with the bombing. despite today's violence, the fragile seize fire in eastern ukraine appears to be largely holding. this weekend ukrainian government and the rebels exchanged 289 prisoners. both sides have pledged to begin removing their heavy weapons over the next few days. a heartbreaking scene of dispair and grace. after a ferry accident claimed

the lives of 48 people. the ferry was reportly caring 40 people. many of those passengers are believed to be trapped inside. more than half of the bodies pulled from the body so far said to be women and children. it's not clear how many more are still missing. ferry accidents are common in bengladesh. a motel fire may have been caused by an illegal drug lab. it broke out last night. firefighters are now telling the san jose mercury nice that it may be linked to an illegal drug operation. a third woman suffered minor burns on her hands trying to

help. damage is estimated at $15,000. vacaville police reminding people to lock their cars after the arrest of two car burglary suspects. officers say they took 20-year- old bobby dunn and nicholas lee into custody after a call of two men looking into cars. they're accused of breaking into unlocked cars. officers are also trying to find the owners of the items seen in this picture. it's believed the thefts occurred on eden ferry drive. cashel circle and withfield drive. a 42-ton hump back whale entangled in fishing line is finally free. the hawaii marines say they were finally able to cut the

whale free. the entanglement could have caused the whale to drown or starve. historic tall ships make 40 stops in long beach to washington state. they also sell tickets for adventure sailing trips on weekends and they even use real gun powder on cannons to reenact sea battles at the bay. >> we're shooting real cannons but we're not shooting cannon balls. they're hustling, they're working, they're trying to outmaneuver the other ship so we can outfire her. >> sounds like fun. the crews and passengers on board the ship keep score during those battles. the cannons are on the back of the ship score the most points because a shot like that would

california has celebrated the lunar new year this afternoon to ring in the new year of the sheep. it all began with a dance to

scare off the evil spirits. and it continued with classes and workshops of things like cooking as you see here. puppet making and chinese calligraphy and there was a petting zoo and a dragon dance to finish off the day. all kinds of fun stuff going on out there. let's check in with mark tamayo who says it's still pretty windy out there. >> the wind is still a factor. but with the northernly wind it really clears off the sky. we had a beautiful sunset out there. looking out toward the golden gate bridge. just really clear skies across the entire bay area. neat shot here as you can see in the bay area. still in the clear out there. but as heather mentioned the wind speeds still out there. they have the rain in southern california. they have flash flood warnings posted in parts of southern california. here's the latest radar coverage down toward los angeles. you can see the yellows and

reds corresponding to heavier downpours in this part of the state. as you head out to the north, no clouds, no rainfall. we just have basically a mostly clear sky and not much in the way of fog. as far as the current numbers out there still in the 60s. the winds keeping temperatures out. sfo 64 degrees. san jose 66 and santa rosa checking in 54 degrees at last check. as far as the current wind speeds, winds sustained at 18 miles per hour out of the north. that's the wind gust of 25 miles per hour. not as strong across parts of the bay area but still breezy out toward sfo. livermore gusts of up to 66 six -- 6 miles per hour. the wind advisory in place to the north bay hills and east bay hills until 10:00 tomorrow morning. for tomorrow, fair skies, still breezy. especially for the -- for the

morning hours. a few clouds trying to approach the region. even a few showers out there could be approaching parts of the central valley. there's a slight chance well inland. well to the bay. we're expecting mostly clear skies. overnight lows we'll be starting monday morning in the 40s. out toward napa checking in 39 degrees. here's the over all weather pattern. this area of low pressure bypassed us. tuesday and wednesday high pressure returns. the overnight low is pretty chilly. in the 30s and 40s. but the afternoon fairly warm out there. as far as a chance of a few showers that could be on friday. it looks like the system will be falling apart over northern california. not a major rain producer but probably a few light showers that could be for friday and
