12:00 pm
>> the ktvu fox 2 news at noon starts now. >> grieving families arrive at the debris sight of germanwings flight. the co-pilot pictured here deliberately crashed the plane into the french alps. good afternoon, i'm tori campbell. it is a chilling development we learned about this morning. the cockpit voice recorder suggests the co-pilot purposely steered that plane into the ground. joe waldman has the latest from washington this afternoon.
12:01 pm
good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon to you, you are looking at video of victim's families arriving at the crash site. the french authorities going so far to set up a makeshift viewing tent as a french prosecutor revealed that the co- pilot intentionally crashed the plane. >> with the french authorities have elaborated on is only shocking. >> reporter: germany's transport minister responded to news that the pilot left the cockpit briefly and the co- pilot refused to let him back in and took the opportunity to destroy the plane. >> the victim realized at the last moment. you only hear the screams literally on the last moment. >> reporter: the air bus went down tuesday as it traveled from barcelona to dusseldorf. the co-pilot, 28-year-old

andreas lubitz joined in 2013 and had flown 630 hours. there are no ties to terrorism. >> we take this very seriously. this is part of our dna. >> reporter: citizens from more than a dozen countries were part of the 150 on board. one of them, emily selkie and her mother. the identification of remains is now underway. relatives of those on the plane were made aware of these developments just before they were announced to the public. meanwhile, the french prosecutor is saying he is having trouble believing the information. >> yeah. i think a lot of people are. thank you joel. meanwhile, the community is coming together in the wake of the killing of a san jose police officer, ktvu fox 2 news' sal castaneda is live at police headquarters where support is coming from civilians and fellow brothers and sisters in blue.
12:03 pm
good afternoon sal. >> reporter: tori, good afternoon. many of the officers say they are just getting used to the fact they won't see michael johnson anymore. the officer who was gunned down. the memorial for the fallen officer continues to grow here at san jose police headquarters. a steady stream of people have been showing up to leave flowers, cards, and other items. 38-year-old officer michael johnson was killed tuesday night responding to a call to check on the welfare of a troubled man. police say the 14-year veteran and field training officer was one of the first to arrive and was shot at close range with a high-powered rifle from an apartment balcony. police say it was 57-year-old scott dunham who opened fire. dunham was reported to be drunk, suicidal, and belligerent when family members called 911. dunham was found dead on the same balcony. this has been a reminder for officers and others how dangerous the job is. >> it scares me, because we
12:04 pm
have so few police department personnel within our community right now anyway. we can't afford to lose one more. yeah. it is a very scary job and i really thank those who go out and do this every single day. >> reporter: a little while ago, three officers from the santa cruz police department stopped to look at the memorial. you remember that two years ago, they lost two officers. now let's go back to you in the studio tori. >> thank you sal. and the reason we had to bump out of sal. we have breaking news out of vallejo, the attorney for aaron quinn is speaking. quinn reported his girlfriend denise huskins was kidnapped monday. let's listen in. >> and we are here to tell you in opposition to what has been said, mr. quinn has cooperated fully with the authorities. and just so you know what is going on, he spent almost 17
12:05 pm
hours being interrogated by members of the vallejo police department and the fbi. in those 17 hours, he agreed, he refused to invoke his right to counsel. in addition, and i will talk about this 17 hours, he went down to the police station with ms. morton, my partner. and ms. morton did everything she could, rather than trying to impede the investigation or asserting his right to work with the police because the major fear in mr. quinn's mind is something had happened to the woman who was kidnapped. and we, at no time, either we or mr. quinn refused to cooperate with the vallejo police department. what is critical about this, is that voluntarily and with the advice of ms. morton, he
12:06 pm
provided fingerprints, clothes, computer access. he gave up every password to every device he had so that they could see that his account of what occurred was accurate and real. he also gave a blood draw and i'll explain why that is important. and he gave what is called a bucle swab. he gave a voluntary consent to search his residence. now understand that mr. quinn is a health professional, dedicated his life to helping people. he has no criminal history. he has no history of mental illness or any kind of offenses at all. he had a really good relationship with the woman who was kidnapped and his concern during all this time is that the woman not be killed or harmed. so what is coming out makes him look that he is somehow
12:07 pm
perpetrating a hoax. i want to make it clear to everyone, that we have not seen evidence yet that this was some type of hoax. and as to the victim, her failure to cooperate with the police, we don't know what that is motivated by and it is unfair and unreasonable to speculate that the reason she is not talking to the police is because she had some involvement. given the conduct of the investigation, it makes sense to us why someone would not cooperate after what my client went through. so, this firm led by ms. morton has done everything we can to assist in the investigation. understand this firm has been in the community a long time. and we understand the pressures that are on the police department and the fbi to solve this crime. on the other hand, there seems to be a string of blatant lies
12:08 pm
coming out about our client, about the victim, and about what has been going on. >> all right, you have been listening to, this is mr. quinn's attorney. he has been speaking quite strongly. he says that mr. quinn has cooperated with authorities. and went through 17 hours of interrogation. he has no mental illness. he does not believe this is a hoax, but it is interesting he also said that they don't know why the victim in this case, denise huskins is not cooperating with the police. since the investigation, they are focusing on both huskins and quinn toasty if they did anything illegal. because police now believe this was a hoax. tara moriarty has more on this story. >> reporter: authorities don't know how she got there, but 29- year-old denise huskins turned up at her father's home in huntington beach unharmed. they had doubt about the kidnapping story from her
12:09 pm
boyfriend aaron quinn from the get go. >> at some point, they made a ransom demand in the amount of $8,500. we also know that the statement that mr. quinn provided was such an incredible story, we initially had a hard time believing it. >> reporter: huskins had agreed to fly back to the bay area to meet with the fbi and police regarding her case, but they have not been able to make contact with her or her family since 11:00 yesterday morning. in fact, police say she has now gotten a lawyer and authorities are blaming her and her boyfriend aaron quinn for concocting a kidnapping hoax. >> if you can imagine devoting all of your resources 24 hours a day on what i would classify as a wild goose case. >> reporter: they were working around the clock on this investigation at the local, state, and federal levels. vallejo police have sent two detectives to huntington beach and they are now looking into
12:10 pm
huskins' finances. >> i can tell you in the grand scheme of things, quinn and huskins have plundered valuable resources away from our community and taken the focus away from the true victims of our community while instilling fear in the community members. so if anything, it is mr. quinn and ms. huskins that owes this community an apology. >> reporter: police say state or federal charges against quinn and huskins could be filed. tara moriarty, ktvu fox 2 news. >> some two dozen cars and boating stolen. many of them dumped in the bay. >> reporter: all believed to be linked to a chop shop. i will tell you what led investigators this this area coming up next. >> and i'm meteorologist mark tamayo. we decided to bring the weather outside. i'm in our rooftop studios talking about some changes for the weekend. we will update the forecast after the break. >> the pope is headed to

that spanned alameda and contra costa counties. melanie woodrow is live. good afternoon melanie. >> reporter: investigators are confident they will find several vehicles. they are not pulled any vehicles out of the bay just yet. but they will be out here several more hours. investigators discovered 21 vehicles that were believed to be linked to this chop shop. they expect that number to climb. they also expect the number of defendants in the case to go up. right now, there are four, but they expect the numbers to rise. they say the defendants considered themselves modern day pirates. to that end, check this out. some graffiti out here that actually says home of the richmond pirates. take a look at this graffiti here. as we pan around, we can show you this open field area that was part of what is being called a homeless encampment. according to investigators, they came out here and they saw
12:15 pm
a bunch of vehicles, boats that were chopped up at this homeless encampment. according to them, the defendants were taking the vehicles and stealing the parts they wanted and going to the moving barge at the edge of the water. they put the vehicles on the moving barge and according to invest gay tours, they investigators, they would doesn't what they didn't want in the bay. according to the contra costa attorney's office. chop shops, there are five to six of them right now. but what makes this case unique is they were not just stealing cars but also boats an dumping everything in the bay. they were smashing ignitions to steal them. back live now, i'm joined by sergeant felix tan with the richmond police department. and sergeant tan, tell us what brought investigators out here specifically?
12:16 pm
>> this started in december of last year, we reports of a burglary on a boat. given the description of the victims, we had strong suspicion that this would be the location because of the safe haven it was back then for the homeless. >> reporter: and it turned out your intuition was direct. how are the divers going about finding the vehicles in the watt sneer. >> they are using technology called sonar. and we are also using what is called an rov. a remote operated vessel. a submarine tethered and it has cameras to locate objects. we are also using divers. >> reporter: all right rain know you guys will be out here for several more hours. it is certainly a long day for you. we will have more of the story coming up tonight at 6:00. three have been located and there is an arrest warrant still out for one of them. i will let you know what their attorney said when i reached

12:18 pm
