this just into our newsroom, it turns out the incident at the naval medical center in san diego was a good exercise in emergency response. the navy says initial inspections found no signs of a gunman or shooting. >> numerous events have occurred throughout the world. so we take this all very, very >> the military police had checked the entire building, after a person reported hearing three shots coming from the basement. the base remained on lockdown, as authorities went from room to room, and led personnel out of the facility. the school officials say a lockdown has ended. and things are back to normal. most importantly, nobody was hurt. here in denver today, one man is in custody, but his alleged accomplice is still on the run, after entering a house, using the key stolen from a puffer car. according to denver police, the keys were stolen from a black

puffing last week. here is 9 news noel brennan. >> just days ago, an suv that was left running outside of this house, was taken. and this morning, denver police say that two men used keys found inside of that stolen puffer car to get inside the home. the family of four that lives in that house woke to an alarm. sounding from their security system. and the husband and wife went downstairs, and saw the door was cracked open. they saw one man outside. and turned around to see another standing right behind them, acting like he had a gun. and together, the husband and wife tackled that man to the ground and held him there until raef. the family says -- an arrest. the family says it is a lesson puffing. unattended don't. puff your car. it is not a good idea at all. it is a scary feeling just to know that they can come back with your own keys and enter your own home.

in all of this. that second suspect, though, is still on the run. and the family that lives in this home, still has yet to recover its stolen suv. reporting in denver, noel brennan, 9 news. >> thanks. they were certainly very brave. ironically, when we got word of this home invasion, tarhonda thomas was out with police, doing a ride-along, as they looked for and busted puffers this morning. she roar reports from aurora on prevent. >> reporter: a cold morning here in aurora and police say you leaving your car running to get into a warm car is exactly what thieves are looking for. on the lookout for puffers. this is one of the cars they caught early this morning. someone leaving their car running in the city of aurora, that is legal, and as is in colorado. it is puffer week. police departments will tweet car running. the reason? it makes it an easy target for thieves to steal.

and we are forecasting 44 degrees. where the 40-degree temperatures are expected along the i-25 corridor, and then closer to the foothills, and the higher in elevation you go, the temperatures jump into the 30s and actually they drop into the 30s. and the temperatures right now, at 37 at d.i.a. and northern colorado, we've got mid-30s, for fort collins and up and over the divide, temperatures are in the teens, as we go throughout the rest of the afternoon, we will see mostly sunny skies, and a few high clouds, closer to 6:00 p.m., and then that will lead the way for a clearing trend, in the overnight hours. and it is beautiful up toward csu with some of the students on cam pause -- campus right now. the len tickular clouds trying to form up and over the mountains. a sunny day on the way. and a warmup. with temperatures jumping above average for the end of the week. you won't need the umbrellas or the snow shovels. at least for a while. but the weekend arrives and we are tracking the hans for snow and colder temperatures.

i will talk about the details >> thanks, belen. we learned today that january has become the deadliest month for avalanche deaths in nearly 20 years in the united states. 11 people, including 10 in the past 10 days, have died across the west. the colorado avalanche information center says four people died over the weekend in washington, wyoming, and montana. season-wide, 14 people have died in snow slides. today, it is a parker teenager who is being laid to rest, after falling into a frozen pond. patrick lantz died january 14 when he and friends fell into the icy water. he was under the water surface for 35 minutes and could not be revived. today, the douglas county school district crisis team is over at legend high school again to help students cope. because a second teenager from that group has died. max was one of the two survivor, pulled out by rescuers, on the 14th. the principal has sent out a heart felt letter to the family. and you can read it on

teenager is out of hospital. two anti-abortion activists who made the undercover videos about planned parenthood are now accused of using fake california driver's licenses to infiltrate the group and both of them are facing a charge of tampering with a governmental record which is a felony. the grand jury also investigated planned parenthood but concluded the group committed no wrongdoing. the woman accused of ambushing denver's fire chief and stabbing him was formally her. and sources say marlene rodriguez jumped into the chief's suv and stabbed him in the arm and leg last week. the chief got away and actually day. rodriguez is charged with attempted second-degree murder. and first degree assault. she is still in custody on all right, everybody, i have to show you something that is pretty cool. this neck warmer, right here,

and so was this towel here and this drink koozy. reuse, right? and they are all very soft. and warm. 15 denver area schools had a very good lesson about all of this over the last two weeks because they were part of the reprieve recycle challenge. they all collected recyclables and got a thorough lesson on what can become things that many people just throw away. congrats to eber elementary, area. the kids there donated more than 10,000 bottles to this project, just over two weeks pretty impressive. so when you get a headache, are you taking the time, when you grab the bottle of whatever you take, are you taking the time to read the label? if not, you could be putting yourself at risk for overdosing. >> and also, we have one of the stars of the dirty dancing stage production that is over at the theater this week. it is only in town for a few short days and we want to meet this guy and you will remember

another shot from larry pierce, up in steamboat springs, as the gorgeous. and all of the snow we have had in the high country has been very tempting for back country travelers to wander out there, and breckenridge looks beautiful and blue skies, in a few of the skiers and snowboarders, are trying to hit the trails and as far as avalanches go, it is very dangerous this year. we have had already two avalanches reported so far this season, but if we look back to records dating to 2005, colorado is leading with the amount of fatalities that we have had, that trig are triggered with -- that are triggered with avalanches. and something to watch out for as the season rolls on. and the avalanche danger has decreased in the high country, it is good news, and it was at considerable levels and now it is at moderate levels for the gunnison zone and the northern san juan zone. and 37 right now at d.i.a. and out here in the backyard, our temperatures are coming in at 33 degrees. and we have a slight little breeze out here, and it is making them feel a little bit chillier, and the weather across the state, in the 30s

in greeley, and 40s out toward the eastern plains, and we still have some single digits, for our friends in gunnison, and 7 right now. and afternoon highs in the high country, are in the 20s and 30s. and we will get into the 20s for lower elevations and the eastern plains. it is a very quiet forecast, really, i mean we don't have any watch, we don't have any warnings and anywhere you're headed, getting into the car, you should be just fine. and overnight, we will have some high clouds, and then tomorrow morning, we have sun in the sky, as we are starting off your hump day. the rest of the afternoon, errands later today, after you get out of work, and be just fine, and you won't be running into any wet road, the clear overnight hours. tonight, it is not as cold as what it was this morning when we woke up to temperatures in the teens. we have temperatures in the mid- 20s, in the overnight hours. with partly cloudy skies. and here is the warmup. 56 for tomorrow. and our normal high is 44 degrees.

too many americans are ignoring the labels on over-the- counter pain medications and it problems. according to a new report based on surveys from consumers and gastroenterologists, a large percentage of people are taking drugs of higher dosage and for longer than what is recommended. one survey of doctors and patients found that 43% of people with chronic pain take more than the recommended amount of pain killers,and for a much longer time than it is recommended. there is also a new study from the u.k. that is suggesting some breast cancer patients, treatments, i should say, might leave patients vulnerable to viral and back teshe infections. the -- bacterial infections. the study was a small one, only 8 women, but researchers think it is pretty -- 88 women but researchers think it was pretty significant. and white blood cells were lower in chemo patients nine months later. and those that protect against tetanus and other bacteria

there was a scary moment for a mom and 9-year-old son after he ran into a glass wall at an apple store in tennessee. this boy who has autism was very disoriented and his mother was very concerned. and then when an employee at talking. he came by and sat with the mom and her son, on the floor, and she still wanted to buy an ipad, so he sat there, and did the floor. where the son felt more comfortable. he then spent time showing the boy how to use the ipad. mom posted a big thank you on her facebook page. that has become viral. in fact as of this morning, it views. times. isn't that awesome? still ahead, one of the

he may have been trying to cross that busy highway just trying to get to all of the green on the other side to climb up. the ecuador transit commission shared these photos on facebook after they rescued the little guy. police say the sloth was examined by a vet and is a-okay and back hanging out in the wild. literally. a rare white giraffe is also gaining a lot of attention at a national park in tanzania. looking at it, you know why. this is a female named omo, named after a popular brand of detergent in africa because she is so white. she appears to be an albino but a partial loss of pigmentation instead of a total loss like albinos. she was first spotted as a calf in 2015 and now a little bit later, they say her chances of reaching adulthood are pretty good. >> she is a redhead. >> yes. >> let's keep the animal pictures. i have a nice one that was sent in by one of our viewers. kim sent this one in, pokey, wants to get outside and enjoy the warmer temperatures.
