it was tiek to make some arrests but things turned violent, the confrontation played out on a high 50 miles away as some members of the anti-government group were driving to a community meeting. along a rural highway the fbi and oregon state police stopped the october fires vehicles to arrest members of the group w w w w w w w w w w w w fired, though they would not elaborate on who fired. one protesters was killed, identified as family as lavoy finicum. >> honestly there are things more important than your life and freedom is freedom is one of them. >> reporter: nbc news spoke by phone with finicum's daughter. >> i want to know why, because i know my dad. he would never put someone's life in jeopardy. he would only defend his life. >> reporter: another militant was injured, treated at the hospital and turned over to the fbi.

occupiers are behind bars, clugt group's leader, ammon bundy and his brother. shauna cox was also arrested. we saw her making soup shortly after it began. >> we are setting ourselves up to help those reclaim their lands back. >> reporter: another arrest happened in arizona where occupier john had returned home. he posted a video on facebook, hugging his kids before turning himself in. they took occupation on january 2nd. they're calling for local control of the land and demanding freedom for two oregon rancher convicted of lighting fires on government land. while many residents wanted the group to leave, authorities made no forceful attempt to stop the occupation until now. some armed militants still remain at the refuge. the occupation is not over, although a few did choose to leave this morning. those who were arrested now face

they have a right to have megyn kelly be a moderator, that's their choice. trump can decide to participate. by putting out that provocative statement, they gave him not only an excuse but a general rationale to say, i'm not going to show up at the debate sponsored by a news organization that's taunting me. that's not donald trump's way. >> sensing an opportunity, ted cruz wasted no time, mark. he jumped in and said, look, i'll challenge you, donald, to a one-on-one debate with no moderator, seemingly taking away the obstacles. how can trump duck that? >> well, it's going to be an interesting question to see whether cruz keeps that up and whether that debate begins an issue. ted cruz must win iowa more than donald trump. it's not absolutely essential he finish first but he needs to win there. trump i don't think will do a one-on-one debate with cruz. cruz will have to decide if he wants to keep on that message.

what? >> at the time was minimal, tingling in my legs. and then i went semp tom free for quite some time. and then during a stressful time in my life, going through a divorce at 24, 25, and my symptoms for the last five years have been hard. weakness in my left side, little bit of coordination. high heels are hard for me. i cannot run. can't dance the way i used to. you know, things that are hard sfl you got the diagnosis, i believe you were shooting the fourth year of "sopranos." you did tell anyone. were you worried about how it would affect your career? >> yes, very much. one of the first people i told was an industry professional and i know they were looking out for me at the time but they said i'm going to pretend you didn't tell me that and i don't think you should tell anyone. people will limit you and judge

i took that advice. i was 20 years old and i was scared. >> i read that you did tell some of your cast mates on the "sopranos" years later. you know what i like? they kept it a secret. >> they did. >> they never leaked it, nobody not once. >> them and my friends and family have fiercely protected me. they've wanted me to come out and encouraged me. i just wasn't ready. i was afraid. but i'm not anymore. >> what was the reason to say now? >> yeah. >> you told me something in the commercial break that you had actually prepared a post that you wanted to release when you made this announcement and it had been on your computer for about six months. >> yeah. yeah. i feel like mother hood really changed me. it changes everyone. and i didn't want to bring my son up in a home where he felt like he had to hold this secret

michael, i'm going to say off the bat, i'm a fan of yours and your restaurant. this is going to be fun for me. >> awesome. >> we're making cassoulet? >> cassoulet, casserole. cassoulet is actually the pot in which we're going to cook it in. it is a mixture, very much like we have baked beans, pork and ham. we have smoked bacon, sausage. we're using chicken because it's healthier. you can use whatever you so desire. >> this is like getting a personal cooking lesson. we're going step by step. first thing is sofrot ito. >> this is a sauce, basically. >> what we're going to do is drain it. we're going to saute this, and sauce.

>> five to ten minutes. don't burn it. we could puree it. what i'm going to do now is transfer this. what we have is the bacon. we preroast third-degree -roasted this a bit and we'll have a little bit of fun on the bottom. deglaze this. >> never know. >> unbelievable. >> deglaze with white wine. we'll reduce this down. add the meat and put it inside of here. now, these are large, creamy beans to saute. then we have an aeromatic bouquet. >> why? >> i don't want the needles and things inside the sauce. >> makes sense. >> meat goes in, we cover it and braise it. >> how long does it cook? >> two and a half hours. very, very slowly. >> all right. >> length of time is important because it becomes very creamy.

hi, everyone. i'm gary shapiro with the 9 news update. police are looking for someone in aurora who shot an off-duty sheriff's deputy, shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex across the street from the high school last night. he has life-threatening injuries. one of the two suspects is in the hospital. in critical condition. he got shot by the officer. aurora police say he is a juvenile. and was shot in the leg. investigators say they think the shooting started as a robbery. one suspect is still on the run. the suspects apparently did not know the deputy. all right, let's check the forecast now. marty joins us with that. we are in for a few nice days. >> it looks pretty nice around here.
