89 news starts -- 9news starts now. 12 people were taken to the hospital after a car crash this afternoon. two of those people are in critical condition, including a child. police say the crash happened just after 2:00, and they are trying to figure out what led up to it. at this time, thesection is still closed. police say one of the people injured was a pregnant woman. she was supposed to be induced tomorrow. police in call la ma sue michigan -- police say 45-year- old shot 8 people total in three locations. four women were killed in a parking lot. a 14-year-old girl also shot in the same location is in critical condition. a father and son were killed at a car dealership. and another woman shot outside of an apartment complex survived with serious injuries. witnesses gave police a description of the suspect's

sunday. investigators say the suspect appear ed to pick his targets at random. >> we don't know why. there is no connection between any of them. this all appears to be random. this is your worst case scenario that any community can have. >> uber confirmed today that he drove for the company and had passed a background check. he did not have a criminal history and the shooting is raising familiar questions many people have after these kinds of tragic shootings, especially about the gunman's mental health. we spoke to a psychologist about this. >> reporter: in the wake of yet another mass shooting, experts say looking into the psychology of a shooter may be the key to preventing future tragedies. >> focusing research dollars on learning how to better predict

>> reporter: and essential and complicated process. the indicators they use are vague at best. >> the person may be dangerous sometime within the next five to seven years. you know, that's kind of what we can say. we need to be a whole lot better than that. >> reporter: currently the known predictors are factors like ankler problem -- ankler problems and alcohol abuse. >> all of those things add to the level of detain justness of a person -- dangerous engines of a person. there are many of people who are depressed who would have no potential to be hurting anybody else. >> for now they say more research into understanding those predictors is needed before psychologists can help narrow the gap. but even then he says nothing is guaranteed.

should be so simple, and it's really frustrating, but i also know that the solution isn't simple. >> reporter: ultimately, he says there are many factors that psychologists just don't fully understand yet. he says there are those who may be vocal and never do anything and those that don't say anything and actually commit these tragedies. he says it's going to take a lot of research and a lot of money to be able to better predict this. >> if only it was a simple task to fix. it's so scary that it was so random and there are so many communities that can say, that could have been our community. >> and when you are dealing with people, it's a very complex issue. >> thank you. crews expect to have a fire burning at fort carson at least 65% contained within the hour. it's fwurned -- burned 1200 acres but has not spread any

two helicopters spent the day making water drops. crews will stay on the scene tonight. they plan to let the fire just burn itself out. smoke can be seen across the area alerting some people living nearby. >> i couldn't tell how far it was at that point and i feek freaked out -- i freaked out because we live near there. >> authorities say the fire is not threatening any structures. it started during a training exercise yesterday morning, but it's not clear how it got out of control. well, it was noticeably cooler today compared to our sunny and warm week. and more clear skies tonight before the storm clouds roll in. >> i didn't have we do -- yeah, we do want to check in with our meteorologist. cooler today, which is probably more common for february. >> today was a seasonal day you guys. we saw temperatures in the upper furz -- 40s.

can see -- you can see our flag, so quiet, so calm. wasn't that a nice relief. temperatures cooler, especially compared to this time yesterday. about 16 degrees cooler here in the denver metro area. temp rs about 47 -- temps are about 47 degrees downtown. 32 in steam boat springs. the winds are calming down quite a bit. things remain relatively calm tlult the remainder -- throughout the remainder of this evening. oush storm -- our storm system is waiting in the wings. but around here things are looking relatively quiet. we say that way for about 24 hours then the storm system moves in. it will hit the high country first, bringing them some snow showers. a winter weather advisory will be in place through tomorrow.

this evening a candle lit vigil will be held. near that intersection now there is a memorial with flowers and pictures of a 24- year-old, travis wood, an army veteran and a father. he was driving home around 1 a.m. when the driver turned left on to 88 in front of a police cruiser coming from the opposite direction. the officer made it out okay. travis's fee ancy says they were planning a wedding. >> i wanted him to know that my baby was a good person, and he was strong and loving and caring and that he will be missed very much, especially by his son who will never get to

>> the vigil is being held at 6 p.m. at westminister park. police are still investigating the crash. the douglas county sheriff's office needs help identifying a man wanted in a sexual assault. the victim says her car broke down last thursday in the east parker area. he is described as a white man, in his 20s. he is driving an older model pickup truck. anyone with any information regarding this should call the douglas county sheriff's office. . cdot says it is confident it will be able to reopen a single lane in the hour. crews spent the weekend clearing boulders. they plan to reopen one lane by 6:00 but with a pilot car leading alternating west and eastbound traffic. crews are going to shut down completely between 9 a.m.

off today, it still is a lovely afternoon. let's start off down the -- of the state. a little bit of snowfall moving in tomorrow evening into tuesday. fort collins, the winds picking up from time to time, just that flag out there in the wind, but nothing too crazy. today a great day. a cooler one, though. 46 degrees out at dia. warmer up in northern colorado. we warm things up to the 50s across the arkansas river valley. a cool one in the 30s near stoem boat springs -- steam boat springs. we saw -- here in the 9 backyard we're looking at

then as we head start the -- it's been a quiet day. we are watching this next storm system just beginning to push onshore bringing in a little bit of light rain and some snowfall, and some of that moving into our next -- into our backyard in the next 24 hours. the timing of it all, i think by tomorrow evening's drive you will find some rainshowers. then by midnight it switches over to snowfall. it's going to be sloppy and it's not going to be lasting all that long. up in the high country you should see in some spots 2 to 5 inches. traveling, well, up to the high country might be a little tough. low visibility as well, too. especially late monday night into tuesday. you see as we go toward

pretty quiet and calm. this is up and down the i-25 corridor. then up to the northwestern side of the state, you will find those clouds beginning to power in. -- p -- pour in. monday night into tuesday, we will see he the worst -- we will see the worst of it. some of those snow showers that are sitting in the foothills and the mountains will be making their way around the i- 25 area. not a huge storm system for us but it will pack a pretty decent punch. really, the central mountains down there, about 4 to 8. then you're going to see those central mountains, 6 to 12 inches, especially the slopes that have a decent up slope

them. >> you kind of got to skint -- it's going to be that wet, sloppy snow. you're not going to see 3 inches accumulate but it's been so warm, everything will be melting fairly quickly. you could have some higher amounts. northern colorado, less than 2 inches. the high country benefitting the most from this storm. if you have a few mid week days off, the powderer should be excellent. look for mostly clear skies up in the mountains. we stay in the upper 40s tomorrow, so another kind of seasonal day. and the first half should be pretty quiet and calm. we stay in the 30s in the foothills where the snow will push in a little earlier.

forecasters say winds reached 177 miles per hour. it was one of the strongest storms in the southern part of the world ever recorded. their government also declared a month-long state of emergency to assess the damage. luckily nobody was home when a giant sinkhole opened up in central germany and swallowed part of a house and another building. it opened up friday and it was about 150 feet deep. the area is still taped off. >> not a good feeling when you see something like that. there are good and bad habits, according to one

and snow all starting to press into the area. you can see out there that our storm system will be moving in from the pacific northwest. that cold front digging in. that's going to keep us cool, especially on tuesday. this is a storm that he'sly will be -- that easily will be bringing us rain and snow as we go into tuesday. we already have advisories in place. overall, the high country, about 4 to 8 inches. -- i'd say s -- i'd say the front range mountains between 6 and 1 inches -- 6 and 12 inches. avalanche danger, not too bad. that is a bit of good news. snow -- 22.4 inches last february.
