inside is us pected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. there were 9 people in the vehicle that crashed in unincorporated jefferson county at the intersection of west bulls near the high school. the passengers and driver were taken to littleton hospital with moderate or serious injuries. a family member said it could have been much worse. >> i thought maybe somebody, i mean once you see something like that, man, you know you automatically think the worse, you know? but like i said i seen them first and barely came here and where am real thankful, man. >> colorado state patrol is investigating and says it does expect charges to be filed against the driver. governor hicken hooper today formerly requested a super fund designation to clean up 48 mining sites in southeastern colorado.

leaked into rivers in 3 states last summer. epa inadvertently triggered it during preliminary clean up work. rivers in colorado, new mexico, and utah were polluted. the environmental protection agency would over sea the clean up with san juan county and silverton endorsed last week, if they designate it as epa sight, it could be months and years away from clean up. america's largest retailer experiences theft, no surprise there, but it is the amount of theft and more importantly the total number of calls to police from our area walmart has attention from chris vanderveen, walmart is a busy spot for police. >> that the kind of thing on par with homeless shelter and drug deals, put that stigma aside, walmarterize busy, lots of volume-- walmarts are busy, lots of volume, they have low-level crime.

by adding the calls up, the walmart on west colfax, it averaged last year 3.7 police calls a day. that made it the busiest address for police in that entire city. we polled a lot of cities about walmarts and how often the police departments respond to the stores. lakewood told us after hearing about our data, it just might be time to sit down with walmart and come up with a better solution. >> definitely a concern, public safety is our number one and we want to make sure all businesses are good neighborhoods to our neighborhoods. >> do you think they could be a better neighbor? >> i think there are things we can work on with them. >> it is not just lakewood, we heard from a lot of other cities that have data that we will share with you at 9:00 and 10:00, we will tell you about the city that tried to declare walmart a public nuisance. a law that is historically used on places such as crack house s or brothels. >> so interesting, that is something i think a lot of

we wait 4 years for an extra day and we end up with a monday. that is kind of lame. hope your leap day was a good one. for those who work with the atomic clock in boulder, today is all business. here is 9 news reporter maya rodriguez. >> the heart beat of time. the ticking off of seconds, the very definition of what a second is. >> we are in the time scale room. >> john low is part of a team at the national institute of sanders and technology in boulder, home of the nation's atomic clock. it is called an atomic clock because 1 second of time is based on how long it takes type of atom. >> so somebody has to say how much is a kilogram? how long is a meter? 1 second? >> it is a standard applied since 1967 to a clock whose function is to keep the rest of us, well, functional.

>> everything from power grids to gps devices rely on the accuracy of the atomic clock. >> so what we do is we base our time on the atomic technology and then periodically have to throw in a leap second, which keeps us in sync with the rotation of the earth. >> staying in sync is everything here. multiple atomic clocks work together to keep the atomic clock on time. so it is given the choice, how would these time keepers choose to spend their leap day? >> you are given an extra day, so spend it wisely, spend it by doing something you normally don't get a chance to do, spend it by doing something nice for someone, or spend it doing something that you have always wanted to do. >> because on this leap day, like all other days, time marches on. maya rodriguez, 9 news. >> improvements in technology helped improve the accuracy of the atomic clock over the years

300 million years to lose a second. a family in lakewood has the hang of this leap day birthday thing, jennifer gill gave birth to her second leap day baby, sharing a birthday with his older brother, giovanni, age 12. >> every time on the 29th, we get to celebrate 2 of our son's birthdays, that is so cool. that is just really cool. >> and giovanni is stoked because until now he has been the youngest in a family of 6 kids. now he will have somebody to boss around and share birthday wake with. a-- cake with. a 9-year-old boy from denver raised $10,000 for a good cause. colorado is redesigning drivers licenses, some features will change, our photos will remain terrible.

colorado's drivers licenses are getting a make over, they will be made out of a heavier material, photos black and white told to accentuate facial features, they will use the design, littleton starting tomorrow. the department of revenue says there is no need to get a new license or id card until the one you have expires. it is not exactly the corp slur but unique and in full bloom at the denver botanic garden, same family as the titeanem called the voodoo lily, it can be grown as a house plant, it is smaller than the

the winds picking up a little in the 9 news backyard, part of a cool front dropping south along the front range. i am meteorologist kathy sabine outside we go. we do have cloudy skies, there is the potential for a brief rain or snow shower around the area yet tonight. but the atmosphere, pretty dry and actually fairly stable with the weak front coming through. it may be hard to get the moisture on the ground. 63 for a monday, the last monday in february, 70s eastern plainss, 20-- plains, 20 degrees warmer. winds west-northwest to 22. windinize creased-- winds have increased at the 9 backyard. this front coming has brought snow to the higher terrain and

peak gusts over 40 miles an hour, berthoud, vail, shifting east-northeast once it drops to the south. fou light showers in the eastern plains, snow in the foothills and blowing snow over i-70 and passes in the high country. main course system is making its way into the midwest where we have winter storm warnings outside of chicago and winter weather advisories to the north and east of new york platte. you can see the moisture coming mainly in the form of high clouds for southeastern colorado with the rain/snow mix across the northern plains and midwest. we will have high pressure as our dominant weather feature for the next few days. actually, once the front drops and things kind of calm down and quiet for us a little bit. the cold air retreating to the north now. we see a 10-degree drop in temperature tomorrow, but this front initially bringing a brief rain or snow shower will move out quickly leading us into a quieter overnight period with clear skies, no winter weather or travel advisory in effect for
