out there, marty. >> nothing much will happen for the next five or six hours; however, this afternoon, extremely windy and stormy today. cool tomorrow morning. for the most part, storms are going to push into southern colorado. a few clouds up over the rocky mountain national park area, at the visitor center. cooler air moving in from that part of the state later in the day. a cloudy start, no rain for you this morning. don't worry about that. it is cool with 50s around here. start to warm it up here by have our high temperature in the lower 70s today. and then late this afternoon, storms kick up and they are going to be very strong. in fact, well defined storms going over the wyoming and montana borders. they're going to travel down i-25 today with a cold front that moves through, and during the evening, and i mean all evening, we're looking at moderate to heavy thunderstorms

coming up in a moment, the weather update. a live look over sky9 over i-70 around stapleton over central park. both sides crowding up. lots of headlights up there, and with the cloud cover it's looking dark. you shouldn't see as heavy delays across 6 and c 470 today. commerce city, the drive is loading up. folks are tap lights at the york street exit ramp, but looking calm. we have an accident report coming in on our side streets at ilef and yosemite. it is on a side street. outside of that, our crash at 38th and fox is all clear and further to the west, a crash along 285 around the indian hills neighborhood at turkey creek road. so far no lanes are fully blocked so

woods yet. that's according to the homeland secretary. homeland security secretary jay johnson. he spoke in the flooded state of louisiana and said that the federal government will continue to offer as much support as needed. more than 40,000 homes have been affected by the severe flooding. just last weekend, 24 inches of rain. more since. president obama declared a disaster declaration, and there were 13 deaths weather and flooding related. we've seen the effects of devastating flooding in louisiana, and here in colorado, we understand this all too well after our own floods in 2013. scientists here say they've come one a new forecast model that could make a big difference in how floods are predicted. we have been looking into this and we have more. >> reporter: scientists know that

getting better when it comes to flooding. the national center for atmospheric research in boulder is part of a team putting together a new forecast model for noaa. they take into account the entire landscape, millions of miles of waterways, across the whole country, too, that allows experts to have a complete picture of where the water is going and when it may arrive at a critical location. the way the national weather service forecasts floods now they focus it doesn't predict what happened in smaller waterways as it did in colorado three years ago. it took scientists more than ten years to develop this flood forecasting model which they'll use this week. >> hope it helps. if you are part of some kient of loyalty rewards program and really who isn't? chances are you are not using the points you earn and unlike saving money in your bank it doesn't

in 2015 there was a 30% increase over 2014. just over 15,000 cars were reported stolen across the state last year. denver is the stop spot for stolen cars, followed by colorado springs, aurora, and pueblo. six minutes after six right now. cu boulder students started their year off, their school year on the wrong feet, sleeping in hotels after being forced from their apartment they have since been allowed back in but earlier this week they were told that their rooms in the apartment were uninhabitable. the building was renovated over the summer and everything was inspected and approved but then the city says after that the bedroom units were modified into four bedroom units without any approval. swinging book shelves divided the rooms inside creating two, 70 square foot rooms and they were rented

. warm and humid for all our friends and athletes in rio. in the mid-70s, high conditions. during the afternoon today and tomorrow some of the warmers days we've seen, close to 90 tomorrow. storms possible during the closing ceremonies on sunday. we also have storms anticipated here. cooler air is moving down i-25 through wyoming. will drop down in the front range later in the day. last night storms are out nebraska and kansas.

thunderstorms start to develop, we go in waves through the afternoon and evening. lasting well past sunset tonight. at not only could we see strong winds and hail but locally heavy rain, more than one inch up and down the front range. stormy evening for us today. 70s before the storms begin, with 60s in mountain areas. clear out west. here come the storms cutting across from summit county to the east. very heavy thunderst this evening. hot out west. showery especially summit county to the east. and we hit our highs before 2:00 today, in the low 70s. and then the thunderstorms begin around the area. last through the evening. cloudy overnight and a very cold saturday morning with lows in the 40s. we rebound nicely, move back to the 70s, gorgeous night tomorrow night for the broncos and then the warmup is on for the early part of next week.

sky9 over florida and alton where a traffic accident has taken place. the road is partially blocked across florida but traffic is detoured around by one block off the intersection. fairly residential here, there is a bus stop in the area. we have a call in to learn more about this scene and exactly find out -- or find out exactly what's going on. couple other cars parked on the shoulder as well and now people waking up, walking into school. we'll track this throughout the morning. we have a couple of factors could keep in mind on the roads today, kids headed back to school which means low down in those school zones, keep in mind you're going to see extra kids out walking in, on bikes and on the buses as well. in terms of how the weather is impacting your drive, less sun glare this morning and potentially wet roads later tonight for your

this weekend. this morning, rain is moving over the montana/wyoming border this. is a second cold front. we had one come through yesterday. another come through this afternoon that is going to produce some moderate to heavy storms in many locations. this isn't one of those, little storm here, little storm there situation. several areas will get thunderstorms during the afternoon and severe weather is possible. i'd say wind and hail could accompany the heavyai looking through the morning, this morning, skies clearing here with temperatures in the 70s early. after 3 to 4:00, several periods of thunderstorms. i'll detail those in a couple of minutes. it has been a quiet start to the day. >> drive-wise quiet as well. incidents popped up but people have

police in brazil could question them about ryan lochte's claim that they were robbed. that it was an armed robbery. a u.s. swimmer has made a $10,000 deal to get back home. the head of the police in rio says the group of swimmers are not victims, they are vandals. changing stories from lochte this morning there's a new statement from usa swimming. this for team usa. >> reporter: a mess, a distraction, and some people calling it an embarrassment. an embarrassment for the united states. and really, such a shame for all the u.s. athletes who came here, did so well this competition and who have been great ambassadors. >> reporter: the brazilian government that is had suspicions of this story all along. they spent millions of dollars of

good job of that. this reflects on it poorly. >> reporter: the swimmers never filed a police report and yesterday we started seeing the first of much surveillance video that's come up between yesterday and this morning. this is from the gas station where the four swimmers were. it was 6:07 on sunday morning after the group out all night. brazilian police say the swimmers were not held at gunpoint. they were drunk and vandalized a bathroom. they were es armed guards who did draw guns when the swimmers tried to leave without paying. they finally paid for the damage. >> reporter: lochte said their cab was pulled over and a group of men dressed as priss point add gun at his head. lochte has claimed three minutes of the video have been edited out. >> reporter: they do not condone the lapse in judgement and conduct that led us to this point.

is expected as olympians, as americans, as swimmers, and as individuals. >> reporter: and that's drawing attention away from team usa's incredible accomplishments in the water and by other athletics across the board. an apology has been offered to the people of brazil, a distraction, taking away from the real point of competition of the games. >>or changing details in that story. he had a phone conversation with matt lauer. did change some of the details. hearing some of the reaction from olympians, bloom of course from colorado, very strongly reacting saying if indeed ryan lochte, he should be banned from team usa. and rowdy gains who is an

lochte should come back to brazil, apologize to the brazilian people and face the consequences. strong, strong feelings about this all the way around. >> proposing a ban, that is very severe. >> we'll see what happens. i read yesterday that people with the olympics in rio said, well, you know, boys will be boys, kind of thing. so this were taking that kind of attitude. i don't know what is going to happen. >> thanks very much. it is now 6:37. november you may see the question on whether to keep state and local judges. analysts say it's a question that most coloradans skip. we're taking a closer look at how this works and this issue surrounds the justice system. >> reporter: it does surround us. the system puts responsibility on voters to elect state and local

this power. in the 2012 presidential election nearly one in four voters, colorado voters, skipped the question about whether to retain a state supreme court justice. the state has tried to engage voters, too, by sending them job reviews on those judges and recommendations on some judges that you should vote out. but for the most part, the ballot question goes unanswered. analysts say it's because most voters don't know about this. in the past 18 years were recommended to be voted out but they weren't. they go back to their six figured jobs paid with tax dollars. we have more on this on 9news.com as well. >> my suspicion is the voters didn't know there was a do not retain recommendation or didn't care about it. >> reporter: currently there are two judges on the ballot that the state is not recommending. we have much more again, information, in-depth, too, on 9news.com. >> thank you much.

this is a developing story. three convicted sex offenders are suing the city of englewood saying zoning laws are forcing them out of town. englewood laws restrict how close sex offenders can live near schools, daycare centers and other facilities for children. that narrows their living choices to 55 of 11,000 possible places. the three men are asking to invalidate 2006 sex offender recommendations. we have an update to a story. the air force changing the phone they use after some of their phones contaminated the water in alpasso county. it is used for fighting fires. the chemicals from that phone used at peterson air force base made the water bad. people in security, whitefield, have had to use bottled water since june. since the contamination the air

. all right. continuing in the u.s.a. men's basketball team is facing increasing competition for gold. today they could get closer. the basketball games draw quite a crowd in brazil. >> reporter: oh, my gosh. the other night we were wondering what is going on in the park. there were people dancing and singing. there was drums. and we realized it was u.s.a. against argentina.

here in brazil because of their nba connection but also basketball is becoming more and more popular in the country of brazil in general. >> reporter: that explains the massive crowds we saw at a place called the nba house. >> we brought the mascots, the cheerleersd, the ledge cheerleaders, the collegends. >> reporter: one >> reporter: people don't mind, 40,000 people have waited in line to get inside where they can have a blast with all kinds of interactive experiences. >> reporter: there are a lot of those in rio. seeing stuff like that gets you connected with the olympics. >> reporter: popular. athletes come here hoping they will have their happy ending but in sports that just does not always happen and that was the case for denver wrestler grey.

you know, her first match she looked so good. she was strong. won that one easily. in the second match of the day, she lost in the last two seconds of the match. and this was her first loss in competition in almost three years. so she was a huge favorite for gold. she called it a heart break. we talked to her family after the match and we talked to grey. >> it's a title i've been searching for for a long t experience with rio and the people here has been fantastic. a gold is a dream that can come true. i hope i didn't disappoint too many people today. >> reporter: no, we told her that everyone in colorado is so proud of her. she's a three-time world championship and an olympian and she's changing that sport forever. congratulations to her. they're going to see some sights of rio before they come back to

mountain and to many of the beaches and christ the redeemer. >> reporter: there's the selaron steps, an artist who built these steps in the 1990s, trying to spruce up his neighborhood. created one of the most cool land marks of rio. [ music ]. . >> reporter: selaron's steps, built by an artest named sellaron he covered up the steps with blue, green, yellow tiles, in honor of brazil. >> to celebrate the world's cup 1994. >> reporter: it became an obsession and soon other people started sending him tiles from around the world. thousands of them. >> some people sent some tiles from their hometown, and right now we

here now where the investigation is happening. what i would suggest is using 136th avenue to transition westbound over towards highway 85. at that point you can head southbound. southbound buckley to go under the overpass and then down to 120th.

afternoon anticipated. not much happening for us right now so we do enjoy between now and noon. through the afternoon if you're looking for rain, today is your day. a lot of us will get rain. we may also see some lightning, strong wind and hail during the afternoon and evening. i see showers not wrapping up until at least 10 or 11:00 tonight. localized basis, half inch to an inch of rain possible. that's a downpour for many of us here up and down i-25 from monument hill through denver up to loveland, greeley. 70s before the storms begin. now, we're going to break up the clouds over eastern colorado just enough to get us into the 70s and then the front comes through. very windy when this happens between 2 and 4 this afternoon. storms move to the south so we anticipate showers here, decreasing in intensity through the evening, they'll pick up in south eastern colorado through the evening. so you get heavy rain in the southeast corner of the state. not much happening west of vail

west, 70s in the mountains, virtually the same temperatures from the moun tony skinn to the -- mountains to the front range today because the timing of the front is cutting us off right in the warmth of the day. amp and evening storms -- afternoon and evening storms are in our forecast. clouds stay in, temperatures drop into the 40s, that's going to be a shock to the system tomorrow morning. very chilly. we have a nice dry dayin i think it's going to be a gorgeous saturday afternoon, beautiful evening for the broncos. warm it up on sunday, next chance for a storm or two in the evening monday evening. . a terrible crash up to the north has closed down i-76 in the south and westbound direction at 136th avenue. sky 9 is overhead and showing where the road is being detoured or the traffic is detoured off of 76 on to 136th. now, unfortunately this closure we do not have an estimate as to when

all the traffic along 76 heading through westbound is now being diverted at 136th to the west. taking brohmley down towards your -- or buckley down towards 120th is an alternate route. look at the backups. lots of semi-trucks coming in from the nebraska state line. we can talk about the alternate routes around the closure, 136th avenue does remain open, westbound over towards highway 85. once you hit to reconnect with 176 once again. overall it is a very, very tough start to the north and east. just a reminder in just a couple of minutes it is the start of the 18th annual cops that cook event in lakewood. the pancake breakfast is at the clemons community center. tickets are $6 at the door, $3 for children and it benefits lakewood police caring by sharing program

food delivery baskets during the holiday season. police officers there do just a terrific job. >> and i heard they can make good pancakes. >> they're good, that's what i've heard. in the news, hillary clinton e-mail scandal still in the news. now usa today reporting that hillary clinton told f.b.i. investigators that powell is the one that advised her to use her e-mail personal account. it is part of newly release given to republicans in congress. the notes say powell told clinton to use her own e-mail server of the she said that is what she thought she was doing. donald trump taking a new tone. in north carolina he made a different kind of speech. he had a softer tone and more humble words. he apologized for some of the things he said. some people say this is proof that trump's campaign is changing. with so many fires burning

surprising. families are ignoring evacuation orders in the area surrounding this fire. the blue cut fire. 4500 people were told to evacuate but only half of them did. more homeowners are staying put and dialing 911 for help but rescue workers can't always reach them in the evacuation area. today in rio, shields is set to defend her london gold medal and becky will take to the canada's soccer team and they'll be facing brazil in the bronze medal match today. and remember, you can watch the denver broncos play the 49ers tomorrow over on channel 20. coverage begins at six with a special edition of broncos tonight, kick-off is at seven. i have my chips and dip ready, not doing anything, come on over. >> it is going to be a gorgeous night tomorrow night. temperatures starting at 70 moving
