6:00 pm
live from las vegas fox5 news at 6 starts now. instagram, twitter, snapchat... come next week, those social media platforms could be the beginnings of how local students and their teachers communicate. why the clark county school district doesn't have an established policy. what detectives found on facebook about what they say this ma to lure young girls into sex trafficking. and a fox5 follow up... as a woman searching for family pictures accidentally auctioned from a storage unit-- didn't have to wait long to get them back. this is fox5 news at 6. local. las vegas it's back to school season -- but according to some parents, the school district missed their chance... again... to make the classroom safer for kids. i'm christine maddela. i'm john huck. tonight we're

classroom... but also the types of conversations your kids are allowed to have with teachers on the internet. fox 5's adam herbets found out -- the district still doesn't have a policy. the school district told me today -- there isn't anyone keeping an eye on any of the teacher's accounts online. in fact, our news station has a stricter social media policy than the clark county school district... and that's why a lot of parents say -- someone needs to figure out where the line should be drawn... for the safety of our kids. jason lofthouse/ over the past 11.5 months not a day has gone by that i don't ask myself why i made those choices this man used to be known as just one of the hundreds of teachers in the clark county school district. now -- in the eyes of the law -- he is a pervert. a pedophile... who had sex with at least one student on campus... and in a hotel room. it gets worse every time you turn on and watch the news. we have been asking the district what they have been doing about the
6:02 pm
comes to what their teachers are doing online. every time we ask, we always seem to get the same answer... they don't have a social media policy, but they're working on it. right now the children have absolutely free range. this mother says -- maybe she's just old school -- but she thinks it's embarrassing. rosemarie macklin/ we're paying taxes to make sure these teachers are being policed. they know what they're doing. they all have background checks and at the same time our children need to be protected at all times. i think as a nosy parent you know it's legitimate or not. jodi martinson -- whose daughter already graduated from high school -- said she sees where the school district is coming from. jodi martinson/ it would be hard to make a policy. i could agree with that, but it's such a gray area. she thinks, in some cases, there might be good reasons to talk a teacher online... and that's why parents need to be the ones keeping their kids in check. it always falls on mom and dad. always. that's where it starts. that's where the kids learn what they learn. not at all. no facebook. no twitter. no instagram. teachers have to know their place, and it's in the classroom. not to be socializing with them. the school district said that if and when they do hammer out a policy, they still
6:03 pm
students to talk to teachers online... so they can help out with things like homework. as for this school year -- they say they will continue to just talk to teachers informally, reminding them to be appropriate. john/ christine a man is accused of luring underage teens on craigslist and forcing them into prostitution. this is 63-year-old "david coil". detectives started investigating the 63-year-old back in may... but say he has been involved in human trafficking since at least october. he's now facing several charges, including sex trafficking of a child under 18 and engaging in child prostitution. metro believes there may be more victims. if you have information, call crimestoppers at 702-385-55-55. an arrest is made in a stabbing that ended in a man's death over the weekend. juan rubio was taken into custody. the 42-year-old is facing a murder charge in the death of 31-year- old michael omalia, who was
6:04 pm
investigators believe the two were arguing, then the confrontation turned physical. omalia died at the hospital. a child was rushed to the hospital - after reports of a near drowning. we're still waiting to hear on the child's condition from police. fox five's vince sapienza is live - near twain and rainbow - after speaking to neighbors. i reached out to a man who was inside the home this afternoon, but they declined to speak with me however i did talk to some nearby neighbors who are still in disbelief
6:05 pm
"oh my goodness" neighbors couldn't believe what they heard. "i heard screams next door and saw the door be violently opened, but i didn't think a baby falling into the pool happened, i just thought the dogs got into a fight or something" neighbors i spoke to were left with more questions than answers. "was it that one second somebody went to feed the dogs and left the sliding glass door open, it doesn't take more than a second." and that's the message local experts like a jeanne marsala... the director of safe kids at sunrise hospital to send out. "trust me i know the kids are quick they can get out of sight quick but we need to remember that around any body of water a child has to have adult supervision at all times " jeanne says the number of drownings and near drowning incidents higher this year compared to last year. "people just always assume, oh it's never going to happen to me, i don't need to put a gate around my pool, it's never going to happen" "in a near drowning the child's can have deficits for the rest of their life so
6:06 pm
near drownings can be just as devastating as an actual fatal drowning" neighbors say all they want is for the child to be ok and for everyone to see this as a teaching moment. "hope and pray that is a lesson well learned if that's where we can take it" hospital staff also say having a pool is a luxury but it's an even greater responsibility from central las vegas i'm vince sapienza fox5 news local las vegas hospital staff also say that often times in a drowning incident you won't hear
