department's history. some of the kids were not allowed to leave until about 5:00 this morning. fox5's eric hilt was there most of the night. but first lets go to adam herbets who is at the school with a look at what happens next. john/ christine last night the school district said their number one priority was taking care of the people who were exposed... and making sure it doesn't leave this building. now hazmat crews are trying to decontaminate the school itself... while investigators try to figure out how all of this happened. at the time we heard about it, the clark county school district called it... not a big deal. they said it was just a tiny bit of mercury... and classes were supposed to let out on time. yeah... that didn't happen. we just waited for
4:01 pm
i expected it to be pretty sunny but then i was like oh yeah, it's been 12 hours. it's like pitch black. somewhere along the line... the story seemed to change... from a tiny amount of mercury, the size of an old school thermometer... to this. this is the largest decontamination incident ever in the history of our department. initially when we made that statement, because i actually made it... that was our initial thought. once we started to get reading school, that raised the level of concern. ccsd police captain ken young says it all started because a couple of kids were just messing around... kids have heard similar rumors. they had mercury in a plastic bag and these boys were playing around in the locker room and i think it broke everywhere police saynine students and three administrators were exposed... and they're supposed to be just fine. the damage to their sleeping schedule is worse than the mercury. it was horrible

sitting there for like 16 hours. it's like i'm mad inside and tired at the same time and angry. still -- police aren't sure how much of it was scattered through campus... which is why they had to screen almost 1300 people... one by one... some of them more than once. mercury just bounces like little beads and it gets on your foot and you could track it everywhere which is why we were very cautious about sending people home when it was potentially on their shoes i just want to commend the school. they did an excellent job. i was there most of t spirit of the kids was great. they weren't depressed or anything like that. it almost seemed like it was kind of fun parents who waited well past midnight to bring their kids home waited well past

say they are still looking for answers. fox5's eric hilt was with those parents most of the night last night, he spoke with more parents today, eric what are they telling you? they told me they are still upset, and when i asked them what made them the most angry about this ordeal they said it wasn't that their kids had to stay late as a safety precaution -- they told me the worst part was the feeling that the school district was not communicating what was happening inside the school tth hundreds of parents outside. i spoke with one parent who got to the school at noon and waited outside for 12 hours for her daughter to be released. she told me during that time she only got voice messages from the school that didn't give her much information at all. and it's not just parents who say they didn't know what was happening -- some students told me they were left in the dark too. "the only way i could figure out what was going on is i went on my phone and searched

information, there wasn't an annoucement saying hey you're going to be here for a while" "when it's getting that late and you don't know if your child is okay, you freak out" there is a meeting tonight at jacobson elementary school... that's at six and for parents who are still looking for those answers. today, ccsd admitted that communication could have been better. at 5 hear what the district says went they plan to do differently if this ever happens again.

humans when it comes to mercury exposure. while it occurs naturally in the earth, it is poisonous to humans. in the body it acts as a neurotoxin, which interferes with the brain and nervous system. as a liquid, it is highly toxic. at room temperature, it vaporizes, then fills the air with tiny, invisible mercury atoms. when inhaled, it's easily absbe the body... and can harm the brain, lungs, heart, kidneys, and immune system. toss to weather you're taking a look live at a nasa spacecraft

game going on inside unlv right now-- as talks center on the cost of bringing a stadium to town. developers including the sands, adelson family, the raiders and majestic realty say it's imperative that the deal is ready to be approved by the end of october-- so they can pitch it to the nfl. today's conversation centers on money... who will come up with the who will profit. the plan calls for a 750-million dollar public investment from a point-88 percent increase to the hotel room tax. a drafted bill says the public's contribution shouldn't exceed 39-percent of the stadium's total cost... which stadium proponents called 'unfair.' they also talked revenue projections-- which are based on 46 big events at the stadium per year. now the question is-- can they book that many. we have a crew inside that meeting right now and will
