department's history. some of the kids were not allowed to leave until about 5:00 this morning. fox5's eric hilt was there most of the night. but first lets go to adam herbets who is at the school with a look at what happens next. john/ christine last night the school district said their number one priority was taking care of the people who were exposed... and making sure it doesn't leave this building. now hazmat crews are trying to decontaminate the school itself... while investigators try to figure out how all of this happened. at the time we heard about it, the clark county school district called it... not a big deal. they said it was just a tiny bit of mercury... and classes were supposed to let out on time. yeah... that didn't happen. we just waited for

i expected it to be pretty sunny but then i was like oh yeah, it's been 12 hours. it's like pitch black. somewhere along the line... the story seemed to change... from a tiny amount of mercury, the size of an old school thermometer... to this. this is the largest decontamination incident ever in the history of our department. initially when we made that statement, because i actually made it... that was our initial thought. once we started to get reading school, that raised the level of concern. ccsd police captain ken young says it all started because a couple of kids were just messing around... kids have heard similar rumors. they had mercury in a plastic bag and these boys were playing around in the locker room and i think it broke everywhere police saynine students and three administrators were exposed... and they're supposed to be just fine. the damage to their sleeping schedule is worse than the mercury. it was horrible

say they are still looking for answers. fox5's eric hilt was with those parents most of the night last night, he spoke with more parents today, eric what are they telling you? they told me they are still upset, and when i asked them what made them the most angry about this ordeal they said it wasn't that their kids had to stay late as a safety precaution -- they told me the worst part was the feeling that the school district was not communicating what was happening inside the school tth hundreds of parents outside. i spoke with one parent who got to the school at noon and waited outside for 12 hours for her daughter to be released. she told me during that time she only got voice messages from the school that didn't give her much information at all. and it's not just parents who say they didn't know what was happening -- some students told me they were left in the dark too. "the only way i could figure out what was going on is i went on my phone and searched
