"4,3,2,1 and liftoff of osiris-rex, on its 7 year mission to boldly go to the asteroid bennu and back" quite a sight today at cape canaveral, florida .. as nasa successfully launches a rocket on a very special mission. this mission involves landing on scooping up some of it .. and returning to earth. fox news correspondent phil keating has the latest from cape canaveral, florida. what nasa hopes to pull off is something scientists and astronomers once thought was simply impossible: to rendezvous with an asteroid..touch it..and bring a little bit of it back to earth. all to help answer the age-old question of how we..came to be. garvin says: "those are all huge questions, they're all about where did we come from? where does life

these, these early planets that were probably extremely barren and challenging.." on the launch pad, the osiris rex spacecraft sits on top of a monster atlas five rocket. blast off will begin a four billion mile journey to bennu and back. bennu, the target asteroid, is orbiting the sun on a similar orbit to earth's, and the size of the empire state building. bennu laps the sun every one-point-two earth years. scientists picked bennu for its accessible orbit, size and promising landing zones. this 8-m dollar mission, led by the university of arizona, will take seven long years. and after two more years of mapping it, osiris rex will then slowly descend onto bennu's surface, touch it for a five-second "high five", blast nitrogen gas into the surface, which will stir up tiny asteroid rocks and particulates, then capture those in an air filter and finally deliver them to earth, landing in the utah desert in 2023. richey says: "our priority is to bring back 60 grams of pristine material. so once we have that, we're not going back to touch that again. once we got it, it's getting

ready to come home." scientists believe bennu is a pristinely preserved, dark black chunk of carbon-rich rock and solar system history. it also happens to be a "potentially hazardous" asteroid, with a tiny threat of colliding into our planet next century. and 60-grams of asteroid will look like this amount of brown sugar... four tablespoons. that's it. possibly proving that we all have just a little bit of asteroid in the building blocks of all of us. now fox5 weather 24/7, with chief meterologist ted pretty we'll see highs at 100 degrees or a degree or two above friday through the weekend. afternoon southwest gusts to 25 mph will be with us on sunday, then
